RESUMO

SUMMARY: Military readiness relies heavily on the physical fitness and operational capability of its personnel. This study aims to enhance the effectiveness of body composition assessment and classification protocols within the military context. A comprehensive evaluation of 4370 active-duty Chilean military personnel was conducted, focusing on anthropometric characteristics, including adipose tissue, muscle tissue, and anthropometric indices. The study observed significant differences in body composition between genders, with men exhibiting lower levels of body fat percentage (men: 26.28 %; women: 34.62 %) but higher levels of muscle mass (men: 42.0 %; women: 36.0 %;), skeletal muscle index (men:11.81; women: 9.31), and fat-free mass index (men: 19.92; women: 18.45) compared to women. High levels of muscle tissue were observed in both groups. By integrating these findings into a standardized assessment protocol, a more accurate classification of military personnel was achieved, surpassing traditional methods used in sedentary obese populations. The study advocates the future adoption of an assessment model based on artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, which consider the multifaceted nature of body composition and its impact on operational capability. Such a model would enable military forces to optimize their personnel's physical fitness and readiness, thus enhancing their effectiveness in deployment operations.

Introduction: Frailty, understood as a pre-disability state, increases vulnerability to external stressors and contributes to negative outcomes such as falls, hospitalization, disability, and mortality. This study aims to identify the prevalence of frailty and assess the associated factors in patients attending the geriatric outpatient service of the Hospital Universitario San Ignacio (husi). Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study involving 689 patients treated at the husigeriatric outpatient clinic between August 2016 and March 2020. Logistic regressions were conducted to identify factors associated with frailty. Results: The prevalence of frailty was 35.4 %. In bivariate analysis, variables associated with frailty included age over 80 years (or: 2.07; ci95 %: 1.40-3.20; p = 0.001), female sex (or: 1.40; ci95 %:0.99-2.02; p= 0.03), multimorbidity (or: 2.13; ci95 %:1.40-2.90; p < 0.001) and malnutrition (or: 2.23; ci95 %: 1.22-4.07; p = 0.009). In multivariate analysis, multimorbidity (or: 2.46; ci95 %: 1.62-3.75; p = 0.001), slow walking speed (or: 5.15; ci95 %: 3.0-8.60; p = 0.001) and low calf perimeter (or: 1.60; ci95 %: 1.03-2.50; p = 0.06) were associated with frailty. Conclusion: The prevalence of frailty in our center exceeds national references; and the identified variables align with those reported in the literature; reflecting the considerable clin-ical complexity of our patients. Detecting factors associated with frailty is crucial for intervention and prevention of adverse outcomes

RESUMO

SUMMARY: Few international studies have analyzed the characteristics of elite wheelchair curlers competing on the international stage. This study aims to investigate the physical fitness parameters of elite Chinese wheelchair curlers and explore the corresponding training enlightenment. Sixteen wheelchair curlers from the Chinese national team, including six male and two female Winter Paralympic gold medalists, were selected as research participants. The following parameters were measured: age, training age, height, weight, body fat percentage, grip strength, absolute bench press strength, and 5-km wheelchair push-timing test. Compared with ordinary curlers of the Chinese wheelchair curling team, elite curlers were older in age and training age; male curlers were shorter, whereas female curlers were taller. However, their weight and body fat percentage were lower, and their grip strength, absolute strength in the bench press, and 5-k wheelchair push-timing test were better. From an athlete development and physical training perspective, wheelchair curlers should increase training years in order to accumulate competition experience. Additionally, these athletes should manage their body weight and fat percentage, and improve their upper limb strength and aerobic capacity.

SUMMARY: Height and body weight measurements are among the most important anthropometric variables when assessing a population's growth, development and body composition. This study aimed to evaluate the height and body weight variability of male entities aged 17-18 years within 35 years. This goal was realized by comparing the height and body weight of the population of the same gender and age in three different time studies. The descriptive statistical parameters and T-test for independent groups show systematic and significant differences in measured variables between three measurements in different timelines. Both in body height and body weight, from measurement to measurement, significant systematic and statistically significant differences (p<0.01) have been identified (1985: BH= 172.8cm, BW= 61.7kg; 2004: BH=176.8 cm, BW=66.9 kg; 2019: BH=178.5 cm, BW=72 kg). The results of this study prove that the change in the socio-economic status of a population over a period time of 35 years can significantly affect the growth and development of children/adolescents.

Objective:To develop an efficient and robust method based on three dimensional facial landmarks for evaluating chin region asymmetry at the soft tissue level and to compare it with the tradi-tional mirror-overlap analysis method in order to test its availability. Methods:Standard symmetrical face was used for mental tubercle coordinate transformation so as to filter soft tissue three dimensional spatial angle and construct corresponding three dimensional spatial angle wireframe template.Ten patients aged 12-32 years with clinical chin region asymmetry diagnosis at the Department of Orthodontics of Peking University Hospital of Stomatology from November 2020 to November 2021 were randomly selected.Three dimensional soft tissue face scan data of the patients were collected by three dimensional face scanner and the landmark points were automatically determined by the Meshmonk non-rigid registration algorithm pro-gram,and in this way,the asymmetric three dimensional spatial angle wireframe template and corre-sponding spatial angle parameters were generated.Mirror-overlap analysis of face scan data was also per-formed in Geomagic Studio 2015 software and deviation color maps were generated. This study took mirror-overlap analysis as the gold standard method, the response rate of chin region asymmetry was eva-luated by the outcomes of the mirror-overlap analysis and three dimensional spatial angle wireframe tem-plate analysis. Results:Nine three dimensional spatial angle indicators were selected through coordinate transformation, and the response rate was calculated using mirror-overlap analysis as the gold standard method.Among these ten selected patients, the response rate of the total chin region asymmetry was 90%(9/10).Using the deviation value of mirror-overlap analysis as a reference, the response rate of chin region asymmetry in the X dimension was 86%,the response rate of chin region asymmetry in the Y dimension was 89%,and the response rate of chin region asymmetry in the Z dimension was 100%.Conclusion:The three dimensional soft tissue spatial angle wireframe template proposed in this study has some feasibility in evaluating chin region asymmetry at the soft tissue level, and its ability to recognize asymmetry separately in the three dimensional direction is better than the mirror-overlap analysis method, and the indicators recognition rate still needs to be further improved.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objective: To study associations between polymorphisms in the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE I/D), actinin 3 (ACTN3 R577X) and paraoxonase 1 (PON1 T(-107)C) genes and chronic diseases (diabetes and hypertension) in women. Materials and methods: Genomic DNA was extracted from saliva samples of 78 women between 18 and 59 years old used for genetic polymorphism screening. Biochemical data were collected from the medical records in Basic Health Units from Southern Brazil. Questionnaires about food consumption, physical activity level and socioeconomic status were applied. Results: The XX genotype of ACTN3 was associated with low HDL levels and high triglycerides, total cholesterol and glucose levels. Additionally, high triglycerides and LDL levels were observed in carriers of the TT genotype of PON1, and lower total cholesterol levels were associated to the CC genotype. As expected, women with diabetes/hypertense had increased body weight, BMI (p = 0.02), waist circumference (p = 0.01), body fat percentage, blood pressure (p = 0.02), cholesterol, triglycerides (p = 0.02), and blood glucose (p = 0.01), when compared to the control group. Conclusion: Both ACTN3 R577X and PON1 T(-107)C polymorphisms are associated with nutritional status and blood glucose and lipid levels in women with diabetes/hypertense. These results contribute to genetic knowledge about predisposition to obesity-related diseases.

Abstract The objective of this article was to verify the association between domestic violence and obesity and malnutrition in elderly people in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Cross-sectional study evaluated in the EpiFloripa Elderly cohort in 2013/2014. The outcomes were body mass index (BMI) and abdominal obesity (increased WC). Violence against elderly people was measured using the HawlekSengstock Elder Abuse Screening Test (H-S/EAST) instrument, and IPV using the Conflict Tatics Scales Form R (CTS-1) instrument. Logistic regression and multinomial logistic regression models were used. It was observed that men had a greater chance of abdominal obesity when in situations of violence and in the potential abuse dimension. Women were more likely to have abdominal obesity in the dimension of violation of personal rights or abuse, when they suffered IPV and when they were perpetrators of IPV. In relation to BMI, elderly women in situations of violence were associated with a greater chance of being overweight and those who suffered IPV. On the other hand, men in vulnerable situations were more likely to be underweight. It is concluded that violence against elderly people and IPV generate an asymmetric impact on nutritional status in relation to sex.

RESUMO

Introduction: Colonic polyps and diverticulosis are common colon findings on colonoscopy. One of the risk factors of colorectal polyps and diverticulosis is the anthropometric index. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the association between the anthropometric index and colorectal findings. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we included 536 patients referred to Razi Hospital, Rasht, Iran, in 2023 for colonoscopy evaluation. Demographical data, clinical characteristics, and colonoscopy findings were recorded for further analysis. All data were analyzed using SPSS.16 by considering a significant level < 0.05. Results: The results showed that 35.4% of the patients had polyps, with the majority having a single polyp. The patient's mean age was 55.94 ± 13.33 years; most were females (54.1%). The most common type of polyp was pedunculated, and most were located in the sigmoid colon. The prevalence of diverticular was 11.4%, most of which were also located in the sigmoid colon. Obesity was significantly associated with an increased risk of polyps, while overweight individuals had a higher risk of diverticula (P < 0.05). Age, rural residence, and low physical activity level were identified as factors associated with an increased risk of polyps and diverticula. Conclusion: The findings suggest that obesity and overweight are risk factors for polyps and diverticula, respectively. Further research is warranted to explore additional factors and develop preventive strategies for colorectal diseases. These results support the need for preventive strategies and screening programs to reduce the risk of future colorectal lesions. (AU)

RESUMO

SUMMARY: The Olympic Games always offer great interest when it comes to water polo. Currently, many selections have an approximate quality and details determine who will win. Prior to the tournament the authors wanted to verify body composition and anthropometric characteristics of players of the three national teams, Serbia, the United States of America (USA) and Montenegro. The purpose of this research was to determine the differences in body composition and anthropometric characteristics between the water polo players of the national team of Serbia and Olympic champion in Tokyo 2021, the national team of USA which took sixth place and the national team of Montenegro, which took the eighth place. Body mass index, fat percentage and muscle mass (body composition variables) were evaluated by Bioelectric Impedance type MC-980 and body height, body weight, triceps skinfold, biceps skinfold, skinfold of the back, abdominal skinfold, upper leg skinfold, lower leg skinfold (other anthropometric characteristics) were evaluated by an anthropometer and a calliper. ANOVA showed that there was a statistically significant difference in fat percentage. The LSD post hoc test showed statistically significant differences between the water polo players of the Montenegrin national team (13.33 %) compared to the water polo players of the USA national team (16.67 %). It can be stated that water polo players from Montenegro had a statistically significantly lower fat percentage than water polo players from the USA and a lower level of fat than water polo players from Serbia, though this was not statistically significant. Although the fat percentage is a disruptive factor with athletes, it had no effect on the result at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, because Serbia eventually won the gold medal, the USA obtained sixth place, and Montenegro eighth place. It means that some other abilities influenced the results at the Tokyo Olympics in water polo, for example tactical, physical, psychological, technical... which is to be shown by some other research.

Abstract: The evaluation of the force in the hand is used in health and labor fields; it is composed of the grip force and the pinch force (Palmar Pinch - PP and Key Pinch - KP). The pinch force has not had significant amount of studies and connections with anthropometric variables. This work aimed to determine the relationship between the PP and KP strength with gender, dominance, age, and anthropometric variables. Using a Jamar dynamometer and with the participation of 681 subjects apparently healthy (48.9 % F and 51.1 % M) from the City of Bogotá (Colombia), who performed different occupational activities, it was found that the PP and KP forces were significantly higher in men than in women both in the non-dominant hand (8.27 Kgf Vs. 6.0 Kgf) and in the dominant hand (8.57 Kgf Vs 6.27 Kgf). The predictive models proposed in this study defined age, thickness, circumference, and maximum circumference of the hand as the main variables. In the female gender, age was established as the primary variable. At the same time, in the male, the circumference of the hand was defined in two models, and the maximum circumference of the hand in another two.

RESUMO

SUMMARY: The aim of this research was to determine the differences among the junior basketball players of the BC Partizan and BC Buducnost Voli, in terms of their anthropometric characteristics and body composition. A sample of 22 subjects was divided into two sub-samples. The first sub-sample of the subjects consisted of 11 players of the basketball team Partizan (Serbia), of the average age 17.18 ± 0.50, while the other sub-sample consisted of 11 players of basketball team Buducnost Voli (Montenegro), based on the average age of 17.28 ± 0.30. All players were tested in Podgorica, in a lasting period of two days, while they held international friendly tournament, just before the start of the national championships. Anthropometric characteristics in the body composition were evaluated by a battery of eleven variables: body height (cm), body weight (kg), triceps skinfold, back skinfold, biceps skinfold, abdominal skinfold, thighs skinfold, calf skinfold, body mass index (BMI), percentage of fat and muscle mass (kg). Differences in anthropometric characteristic and composition of the body of the male junior basketball players of two basketball teams were determined by using a discriminatory parametric procedure with t-test for small independent samples. It was found that the basketball players of Partizan are taller and have a lower body mass. Also, there are significant statistical differences by seven: triceps skinfold, back skinfold, biceps skinfold, abdominal skinfold, calf skinfold, thigh skinfold and BMI.

Introduction: During the archaeological or forensic discovery of an incomplete skeleton, with vertebrae without identifying characteristics, it is not possible to determine the regional level of the spine because there are few determinants that distinguish the levels to which a vertebra belongs. Objective: To propose a mathematical formula for the identification of lumbar vertebrae that are not particular. Methods: A descriptive observational study was conducted in the osteotheque of the University of Medical Sciences of Matanzas. All lumbar vertebrae between LII and LIV in the collection were analyzed for a total of 87 bones. The indices for the body and hole were measured and calculated, and a mathematical quotient was used to associate both parts. Results: The transverse diameter predominated over the antero-posterior in the body and in the hole. The mean ratio between the two was 0.60 cm and allowed the vertebrae to be divided into 2 groups: upper and lower; morphologically, they must coincide with the lumbar vertebrae LII and LIV. Conclusions: The morphometric relationship of the body-hole ratio can differentiate lumbar vertebrae that are not particular.

RESUMO

SUMMARY: The main goal of this research was to determine whether there is a statistically significant difference in the anthropometric characteristics of fourth grade elementary school students, who live in different demographic environments in Montenegro. The research was conducted on a sample of 120 students, fourth grade elementary school, male (60 students from urban areas and 60 students from rural areas). To measure anthropometric characteristics, 12 measures were applied (Body height, arm length, leg length, shoulder width, elbow diameter, knee diameter, body weight, upper arm circumference, lower leg circumference, skin fold of the back, skin fold of the upper arm, skin fold of the abdomen). After conducting research with the application of appropriate statistical procedures: descriptive analysis, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and analysis of variance (ANOVA), it was noticed that there is a statistically significant difference in the treated space of anthropometric characteristics. Boys from rural areas are more dominant than boys from urban areas in the longitudinal and transverse dimensionality of the skeleton and in volume on certain body segments, and boys from urban areas are more dominant than boys from rural areas in body weight and subcutaneous fat, which puts them at risk for obesity.

Background: Overnourished under-five children are anthropometrically classified as either being at possible risk of overweight, overweight or obese and defined so, when either weight for height or body mass index for age (BMI-for-age) are >1SD to 2SD, >2SD to 3SD and >3SD, respectively of the analogous World Health Organization standards. Aim: To compare weight for height and BMI for age definitions for quantifying overnutrition burden. Methods: Theoretical consequences of ignoring age were evaluated by comparing, at varying height for age z-scores, the age- and sex-specific cutoffs of BMI that would define overnutrition with these two metrics. Overnutrition prevalence was then compared in simulated populations (short, intermediate and tall) and real-life datasets from India. Results: In short (-2SD) children, the BMI cutoffs with weight for height criteria were lower in comparison to BMI for age till 7-8 months, but higher at later ages. In National Family Health Survey-4, India dataset (short population), overnutrition (>1SD) prevalence with weight for height was higher from 0-0.5 years (exclusive breastfeeding age), but lower at subsequent ages. The prevalence difference (weight for height - BMI for age) in 0.5-5 years was -2.26% (6.57% vs 8.83%); this attenuated in 0-5 years (-1.55%; 7.23% vs 8.78%). The discrepancy was maximal for stunted children and was lower in girls. A similar pattern, of lower magnitude, was observed for overweight (>2SD) comparison. In intermediate and tall populations, there were no meaningful differences. Conclusion: The two definitions produce cutoffs, and hence estimates of overnutrition, that differ with the age, sex, and height of under-five children. The relative invariance, with age and height, of BMI for age, favors its use.

RESUMO

Objective:To evaluate the predictive value of anthropometric indicators in predicting cardiovascular risk in the population with metabolic syndrome(MS).Methods:A cross-sectional study was used to analyze the correlation between anthropometric measures and cardiovascular risk in subjects with MS. Cardiometabolic risk was assessed with cardiometabolic risk index(CMRI). Receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve analysis was used to assess the predictive power of anthropometric measures for cardiometabolic risk.Results:(1) The anthropometric measures [body mass index(BMI), waist-hip ratio(WHR), waist-to-height ratio(WtHR), body fat percentage(BFP), visceral fat index(VFI), conicity index(CI), a body shape index(ABSI), body roundness index(BRI), abdominal volume index(AVI)] in the MS group were significantly higher than those in the non-MS group( P<0.05). Moreover, there were significant differences in CMRI score and vascular risk between the two groups( P<0.05). (2) Logistic regression analysis showed that the cardiovascular risk was increased with the increases of BMI, VFI, WHR, WtHR, CI, BRI, and AVI after adjusting for confounding factors in the overall population, the non-MS population, and the MS population( P<0.05). (3) In the ROC analysis, the AUC values of BMI, VFI, and AVI were 0.767, 0.734, and 0.770 in the overall population; 0.844, 0.816, and 0.795 in the non-MS population; 0.701, 0.666, and 0.702 in the MS population, respectively. For the overall population and non-MS population, the optimal cut points of BMI to diagnose high cardiovascular risk were 26.04 kg/m 2 and 24.36 kg/m 2; the optimal cut points of VFI were 10.25 and 9.75; the optimal cut points of AVI were 17.3 cm 2 and 15.53 cm 2, respectively. In the MS population, the optimal cut point as a predictor of high cardiovascular risk in young and middle-aged men with MS was 27.63 kg/m 2, and the optimal cut point of AVI in women was 18.08 cm 2. Conclusion:BMI, VFI, and AVI can be used as predictors of cardiovascular risk in the general population. BMI can be used as a predicator of high cardiovascular risk in young and middle-age men with MS. AVI can be used as a predicator of high cardiovascular risk in women with MS.

RESUMO

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a term that covers a number of clinical problems involving the masticatory muscles, TMJ and all associated structures leading to signs and symptoms such as jaw pain, otalgia, headaches and limitation of function. In this context, TMD has been related to facial type and there are three distinct facial types (euryprosopic, mesoprosopic, and leptoprosopic). Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between myofascial pain and facial types classified by the RDC/TMD Axis I. Material and Methods: this study was composed of 64 women aged between 12 and 49 years, using data obtained from two institutions. We used the anthropometric methodology, which meets the criteria of simplicity and reliability. We also applied the Brugsh Facial Index. The individuals were classified as euryprosopic (51.56%), mesoprosopic (12.50%) and leptoprosopic (35.94%), without statistical significance among the groups (p=0,3492). Results: there is no statistical difference between the age groups (p=0.2976) and no association between facial type and age range. Conclusion: this study found that there was a correlation between myofascial pain and facial types, with the predominance of euryprosopic faced women aged between 20 and 29 years when compared with other facial types and other age groups. (AU)
