RESUMO

Background: Medical students are the future doctors who are the primary caregivers for the society. High level of stress can obstruct the learning of medical students by impairing their concentration, problem solving, and decision-making skills. Improving mental well-being of medical students will ensure community safety. The stakeholders need to realize positive role of mental well-being on academic performance of students. This will not only benefit the students as well as the society as a whole. Aim and Objective: The present study was innovatively planned to determine the impact of the motivational sessions on relieving perceived stress and anxiety of the students along-with impact of such sessions on motivation for learning. Materials and Methods: An interventional cross-sectional study was designed for 2nd year MBBS students. A module comprising of eight sessions for improving mental well-being of undergraduate students was designed by an interprofessional team comprising a medical teacher, clinical phycologist, psychiatrist, and medical students. The pre-validated scales used were Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) to assess anxiety level, Perceived Stress Scale to assess perceived stress, and Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire to measure the types of learning strategies and academic motivation of college students. Results: About 64% (n = 46) of the participants were male and 36% (n = 26) were female students. The present study showed no significant association between the gender and stress. It was seen that number of students with high perceived stress before the session were reduced by as much as 72.41% and that of students with highest motivation for learning strategies doubled from 18 to 36 (100% improvement).The difference in means of HAM-A scores in post-test and pre-tests is highly significant (P = 0.01). The students were very much satisfied with the mode and content of the module. They expressed that these sessions made them feel thought of and cared for. Conclusion: It is strongly recommended to apply this interprofessional interventional approach to improve the mental well-being of medical students for better academic performances.

Objective To investigate the effect of comprehensive nursing intervention and evaluate its role in the entire clinical course of in the treatment of children with severe burns. Methods A total of 60 children with 1-5 years old with clinical diagnosis of severe burns were randomly divided into experimental group and control group by random digits table method, 30 cases in each group. The control group received routine burn care. The experimental group received comprehensive nursing interventions on the basis of routine burn care and the intervention time covered the entire course of treatment. During hospitalization, the recovery and family social system were evaluated by anxiety scales and social support scales combined with the cure rate and hospitalization of children. Results Before intervention, the score of Anxiety Rating Scale was high in both groups of families, while Social Support Scale was lower, the difference was not statistically significant between the two groups (P>0.05). After intervention, the score of Anxiety Rating Scale and was Social Support Scale were (52.31±7.81), (31.52± 5.48)points in the experimental group, and (62.51 ± 6.52), (23.62 ± 5.62) points in the control group, and there were significant differences (t=5.491 3, 5.512 5, P<0.01). The length of stay was (18.34±3.58) d in the experimental group, and (21.82 ± 4.23) d in the control group, and there was significant difference(t=3.439 6, P<0.05). The cure rate was 93.33%(28/30) in the experimental group, and 56.67%(17/30) in the control group, and there was significant difference(χ2=10.755 6, P<0.05). Conclusions The comprehensive nursing intervention can provide comprehensive refinement of the overall care in children and their families, promote physical and psychological rehabilitation of children with severe burns, and repair their family and social support systems. The comprehensive nursing intervention has far-reaching implications for the rehabilitation of children with severe burns.

Background: Depression is an important global public health problem and is a major cause of disability and premature death. The present study was conducted to compare effi cacy and safety of amisulpride and escitalopram on Hamilton anxiety rating scale (HAM-A) among depression patients in a tertiary care teaching hospital in Nepal. Methods: The study was conducted in patients for 1-year in the Department of Neuropsychiatry, Nepalgunj Medical College and Teaching Hospital. A total of 117 depression patients were divided into two groups. Group I (58 patients) received amisulpride tablet at a dose of 50 mg/day and Group II (59 patients) were given escitalopram at a dose of 10 mg/day. The patients were required to follow-up at 4, 8 and 15 weeks. The effi cacy of the drugs was calculated by HAM-A. Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) were monitored at every follow-up. Appropriate statistical tools using Graphpad instat 3.0 were used for analysis p<0.05 was considered signifi cant. Results: HAM-A score in group receiving amisulpride at 0 and 15 weeks was 19.83±0.33 and 8.17±0.32 (p<0.0001). HAM-A score in group receiving escitalopram at 0 and 15 weeks was 20.76±0.28 and 8.98±0.24 (p<0.0001). Gastrointestinal disturbances, sexual disturbances, amenorrhea, lactation, agitation, and insomnia were the commonly encountered ADRs. Conclusion: Both amisulpride and escitalopram were highly effective in the treatment of anxiety in depression patients during the study period. Further, more clinical studies with longer follow-up duration are needed to substantiate the therapeutic effects of amisulpride.
