RESUMO

Aim of the study: The present study aimed to study histological features of different organs before and after treatment of diabetes by using avocado extract in rats. Materials and methods: Hot aqueous extraction of avocado was performed. Forty male rats (weighted 140–190g) were used in this study. Following the time of acclimatization, the animals had an overnight fast of 18 hours before being prepped for alloxan monohydrate-induced diabetes. Before and after induction, measurements of the animals’ body weights and blood glucose levels were made. However, rats received an IP injection of alloxan 150 mg/kg bw. Following that, the rats’ blood glucose levels were tracked every day for 3 weeks to establish a stable levels of blood glucose. The animals were divided into 4 groups: Group 1 got water as a non-induced (negative control) condition. Alloxan-induced rats in Group 2 received water as a positive control. Group 3: Alloxan-induced and aqueous extract-treated animals and Group 4 was only given a 40 g/L dose of the aqueous extract of avocado. Pancreas, livers, as well as kidneys from control, alloxanized, and treated rats were taken at different times, processed and utilized for histological examination after being preserved in 10% formaldehyde till processing and staining. Results: The current results showed a significant difference between different groups especially in G3 at different weeks. However, rats in G2 exhibited depleted islet cells and regions of cell necrosis. The tiny, preserved islet cells (PIL) in diabetic rats treated with extract after 1 week (G3) were an improvement as compared with rats at G2. As the days advanced, more improvements were seen in the pancreatic architecture of the rats treated with extract, including the presence of more noticeable islet cells and exocrine cells. As seen by the intact pancreatic islet in G3, caused the healing of the pancreatic tissue after 3 weeks of treatment by extracts. Alloxanized rats (G2) showed the presence of cell necrosis as well as infiltrations of inflammatory cells. However, as the course of therapy continued, it became clear that the tissue architecture had improved, and more glomeruli were seen as well as fewer inflammatory cells (G3). Livers of rats in (G2) showed visible cell necrosis, when compared to the histology of G1 and G4. After receiving medication, rats in group G3 had compact, healthy liver tissues after three weeks. In conclusion, the pancreas, kidneys, and liver were all protected by the avocado extract and showed enhancement in the histological architecture and glucose levels.

RESUMO

Cookies are versatile foods that can supply specific needs and can be used as food vehicles to increase the intake of various nutrients. The objective was to create a gluten-free butter cookie based on rice flour (Oryza sativa). A central composite design 22 was used for analyzing the substitution of rice flour for bean flour (Phaseolus vulgaris, L.) (0-60%) and the substitution of butter for avocado puree (Persea americana) (0-100%). Response Surface Methodology were used to analyze the data with a significance of 10% (p<0.1) and a minimum R2 of 0.6. Variables analyzed were protein content (%), fat content (%), spread ratio, weight loss (%), water activity, moisture content (%), and ash content (%). Increases in the percentage of substitution of bean flour and avocado puree increased the amount of protein, ash, and moisture significantly. Fat content increased significantly following the decrease in avocado substitution. The minimum weight loss was obtained on intermediate values of bean flour. Water activity and spread ratio were not affected by changes in the variables measured. Three different formulas were obtained for the optimization: 46% bean flour and 86% of avocado puree, a formulation with an appropriate moisture range by reducing the lipid oxidation (59% bean flour and 82% avocado puree), and a formulation with 100% avocado (40% bean flour and 100% avocado puree). Sensory evaluation results of optimized treatments indicated that the formula with 46% bean flour and 86% avocado puree presented the highest global acceptance. Results from this study showcase the possibility of producing gluten-free cookies with good protein content.

Abstract Introduction: Avocado (Persea americana Mill.) is a member of Lauraceae with one-seeded berry fruit and cultivated in all tropical, subtropical regions in the world and in the Southern coast region of Turkey. Oxidative damage caused by UV can trigger inflammation, resulting in serious inflammatory skin diseases including eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, hyperpigmentation and ageing. Enzyme inhibitors involved in melanogenesis, such as tyrosinase, have been used recently for hyperpigmentation and skin diseases in cosmetic products. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tyrosinase activities and total polyphenolic contents of the different parts of P. americana fruit. Methods: The fruit was divided into exocarp, mesocarp, seed, and then methanol and n-hexane extracts were prepared. DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging capacities and inhibitory potentials on lipid peroxidation were determined to investigate the antioxidant potentials of the extracts. Anti-inflammatory activities of the extracts were evaluated by measuring the stabilization level of the human red blood cell membrane. The tyrosinase inhibitory activities of the samples were determined using mushroom tyrosinase. Results: In general methanol extracts possessed remarkable higher DPPH free radical scavenging activities than n-hexane extracts. The highest activity was determined in methanol extracts of seed (4.17 ± 0.04 mg/mL) followed by exocarp (5.25 ± 0.05 mg/mL). Overall methanol extracts possessed higher ABTS free radical scavenging activities than n-hexane extracts. The greatest ABTS free radical scavenging activity was obtained in methanol extracts of seed (0.03 ± 0.01 mg/mL). In the anti-lipid peroxidation assay, the greatest activity was noticed in methanol extracts of seed (7.71 ± 0.36 µg/mL) followed by exocarp (12.12 ± 0.34 µg/mL), while all n-hexane extracts were inactive. Overall methanol extracts exhibited higher anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties than n-hexane extracts. However, the maximum anti-tyrosinase activity was determined in n-hexane extracts of exocarp (0.40 ± 0.01 mg/mL) followed by seed (0.46 ± 0.01 mg/mL). Conclusions: These extracts are promising candidates for use as natural products-based antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in inflammation-related disease, and also anti-tyrosinase properties in dermatological applications.

Eight equines were distributed in a randomized crossover design, one control group (CG) without supplementation and another group supplemented (SG) with avocado oil for a period of six weeks. At the end of the sixth week, the animals were submitted to standard exercise test (SET) and after seven days to the low intensity test (LIT). After the first cycle, there was a 30-day washout rest period to exchange groups for the second cycle, which followed the protocol of the first one. Thermoregulation was evaluated based on rectal temperature and body surface temperature of 15 regions of interest obtained by thermography. Rectal temperature and thermographic images were obtained before, one minute and 15 minutes after exercise. There was no difference between the CG and SG at any time. The results obtained in this study revealed that the supplementation of 5% of dry matter with avocado oil for six and seven weeks did not influence the thermoregulation based on the body surface temperature of the horses submitted to SET and LIT, respectively.(AU)

Abstract Persea americana is a species of great nutritional and economic importance for Mexico, however, like any other agricultural crop, it is affected by pests and diseases that limit its worldwide commercialization. The phytopathogenic fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is the causative agent of anthracnose in avocado and manifests itself in the early stages of fruit development as well as in post-harvest and storage, under conditions of high relative humidity (80%) and at temperatures from 20°C, causing losses economic up to 20% of production. Applying geostatistical methods the present study aims to define the spatial distribution of anthracnose in Hass avocado fruits in four municipalities of the State of Mexico during the period from January to June 2017. The results show that the distribution of anthracnose was adjusted to gaussian and exponential models in most, the infestation maps made through the kriging show more than one centerof aggregation of the disease, based on it the infested surface was estimated, finding an infestation of more than 50% in the first samples and up to 98% in the samplings belonging to the month of June in all the areas studied. © 2019 Published by Elsevier Espana, S.L.U. on behalf of Asociación Argentina de Microbiología.

ABSTRACT A current trend in cheese making is to substitute milk fat for its high content of saturated fatty acids (SFA), with lipids of vegetable origin and avocado for its high content of unsaturated fatty acids (AGI) mainly oleic acid and phytosterols. (campesterol, β-Sitosterol), has been valued by promoting healthy benefits to the consumer. The objective of this study was to evaluate with judges the liking or dislike of the cheeses made with fat replacement and to analyze the texture profile (TPA). The cheeses elaborated with three levels of avocado pulp were analyzed by means of a 5point hedonic test with 109 judges and the analysis of texture profile with texturometer model TA-XT2i. The T4 with the 18% added pulp was the one liked most according to the DMS test when determining the acceptance of the cheeses, although no differences were found between the T3 and the T4; the T2 was the least liked product. In the texture profile analysis, significant differences were found with respect to the control; the avocado pulp as a substitute for fat in the cheeses generated low values in the textural parameters, the cheeses retain high humidity and low fat content, obtaining a crumbly product, due to the modification of the casein matrix which is the one that gives rigidity to the cheeses.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE To determinate if the ingestion of avocado in patients with metabolic syndrome diminishes endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress and inflammation after ingesting hamburger meat. MATERIAL AND METHOD An experimental, longitudinal, randomized, prospective, crossed, open but blinded for outcomes evaluators trial was done from June to August 2018 in patients with metabolic syndrome in agreement to NCEP criteria. These patients were evaluated for endothelial function, inflammatory state and oxidative stress after two treatments: a hamburger meal and a hamburger meal plus avocado. RESULTS Fourteen patients with metabolic syndrome were included (11 men and 3 women). When ingesting hamburger meat, NO levels were raised compared when adding avocado that blunted this effect (p < 0.05). Hamburger decreased lipoperoxidation, effect that was inhibited by adding avocado (p < 0.05). The oxidative reactive species elevated their monocyte expression after hamburger ingestion; this effect was also inhibited by adding avocado (p < 0.05). No differences were found in the levels of adhesive molecules CD11b, CD18 in granulocytes and monocytes. CONCLUSIONS In an acute manner, avocado blocks the reduction of nitric oxide, diminishes formation of oxygen reactive species and blocks reduction of lipid peroxidation concentrations caused by a hamburger.

RESUMO

The effects of avocado seeds (A) inclusion (2%, 4% and 8%) in diets on cholesterol and carbohydrate metabolism in normal rats Sprague Dawley (SD) fed on basal diet (BD) or high sucrose diet (HSD) and spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHR) fed on BD were studied. The inclusion of avocado seeds in the diet influences the feeding and growth performance in rats. The inclusion of A lowered (p < 0.05) cholesterol at 2% and 4% doses and glucose at 2% in serum of SD rats fed on BD, whereas only serum cholesterol level was reduced at all the three doses in SHR. Increased liver glycogen (p < 0.05) was noted in SD rats fed on BD with 8% A. All avocado seeds doses increased (p < 0.05) liver glycogen storage in SHR fed on BD and SD rats fed on HSD. Avocado seeds can lower blood glucose and cholesterol and enhance liver glycogen storage in rats.

The standard physiological parameters for assessing stress physiology, of plants, such as chlorophyll index and photosystem II fluorescence, are essential for measuring reactions of plants to stress conditions. To help standardize the parameters for chlorophyll indices of chlorophylls a, b, and total and the fluorescence of photosystem II (Fv/Fm), which are physiological indicators of stress conditions, 6-mo-old seedlings of Persea americana Mill. cv. 'Duke7' and 'Toro canyon', were evaluated under shade house conditions. For each plant, chlorophyll indices were measured from the second through the fourteenth fully expanded leaves. Fluorescence was measured in the third, fifth, seventh, and ninth fully expanded leaf, and determined in function of both, time and intensity of the exposure light source, and the time for dark pre-acclimation of the leaf; was also compared right and left sides of the leaves. Chlorophyll indices were not different between the left and right sides of the leaves, but were different between varieties with 'Duke 7' having the highest value from the eighth leaf, while leaves tested for 'Toro canyon' did not show a difference. For Fv/Fm, there was an interaction among the three factors in both cultivars. A prolonged exposure time (nine seconds), short time for acclimation to darkness, and low intensity of exposure did not induce maximum fluorescence levels. On both avocado cultivars, exposure to maximum light intensity for 7 seconds after 25 to 30 minutes of acclimation to darkness, was the most favorable combination allowing the measurement of photosynthetic efficiency.

Avocado is one of the fruits of economic importance in Colombia. However, it presents losses mainly during the post-harvest period. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of an edible coating based on high acyl (HAG) and low acyl gellan (LAG) on post-harvest avocado quality (Persea americana cv. "Hass") stored during nine weeks. A factorial design 2³ was employed for the biofilm preparation, where the factors were concentrations of HAG (0.30 and 0.60% w/v), LAG (0.30 and 0.60% w/v) and glycerol (GLY v/v). As antimicrobial aqueous extract of lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L) was used. Properties such as firmness, moisture loss, pH, total soluble solids (TSS) during storage were evaluated. Finally, for the microbiological shelf life estimation the Hinshelwood Monod equation was applied previous data modeling using the Baranyi and Roberts model. The results indicated that the application of edible coatings based on gellan gum containing low concentrations of glycerol reduces the loss of firmness, moisture, soluble solids and prevent large changes in pH, maintaining the quality of avocado and extend its shelf life.

Influence of avocado (Persea americana) pulp consumption on lipid metabolism in normolipidemic and diet induced hyperlipidemic mice . Dyslipidemia is a risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease, a major cause of deaths worldwide. The aim of this work is to study the effect of avocado (Persea americana), on lipid metabolism on normolipidemic and hyperlipidemic mice induced with high fat diet. Four groups of animals receiving standard diet (DE), standard and avocado diet (DEa), high fat diet (DH) and high fat and avocado diet (DHA) were used. All animals were observed for a period of 28 days. Blood sample was obtained at the end of experimentation period by cardiac puncture on anesthetized animals, and the levels of Cholesterol, triglycerides and col-HDL were de- termined and c-LDL, VLDL and atherogenic and coronary risk factors were calculated. DH group showed levels of TC, TG, c-LDL and VLDL significantly higher (p<0,001) than the values achieved in DHa group. DHa and DEa plasmatic values of TC, TG, c-LDL and VLDL were significantly reduced (p <0.001) compared to DH group. DEa and DHA groups differed significantly (p <0.005) in the level of CT, the latter has lower values, the other quantified parameters showed no significant differences. There were no significant differences for c-HDL values in any group. Hyperlipidemia induction with a model of high fat diet produced significantly increasing values of TC, TG, c-LDL and VLDL, besides of increasing the atherogenic risk. The benefit of avocado pulp consists in reduction of TC, TG, c-LDL, VLDL and the index of atherogenic risk(AU)

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to present a literature review about the characteristics, applications, and potential of avocado (Persea americana). Avocado is considered one of the main tropical fruits, as it contains fat-soluble vitamins which are less common in other fruits, besides high levels of protein, potassium and unsaturated fatty acids. Avocado pulp contains variable oil content, and is widely used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry, and in the production of commercial oils similar to olive oil. This fruit has been recognized for its health benefits, especially due to the compounds present in the lipidic fraction, such as omega fatty acids, phytosterols, tocopherols and squalene. Studies have shown the benefits of avocado associated to a balanced diet, especially in reducing cholesterol and preventing cardiovascular diseases. The processed avocado pulp is an alternative to utilize fruits, which can be used in various value-added food products. Fluid extract of the avocado leaves is widely used in pharmaceutical products, mainly due to the diuretic characteristic of the present compounds in plant leaves. With the increasing research supporting the nutritional characteristics and benefits of avocado, the tendency is to increase the production and exploitation of this raw material in Brazil, as also observed in other countries.

The purpose of this study was to establish new food products that increase the nutritional value and health benefits of the probiotic yogurt currently used in the Western Heads East (WHE) Project in Mwanza, Tanzania. The probiotic yogurt has established health benefits, and product development through fortification must not adversely affect the acceptability of yogurt or the viability of the probiotics. Both sensory testing and microbial analysis testing were conducted. The products tested were yogurt fortified with locally-grown fruit purees with inulin and Moringa oleifera. The results of the sensory evaluation showed that all yogurts were not rated significantly different from the control, except for appearance. The avocado puree without inulin rated significantly lower in all categories. The microbial analysis showed that Moringa oleifera did not negatively affect the growth of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 in MRS, milk or yogurt, although a significant decrease was found after 5 weeks of storage at 4 oC.

RESUMO

Freeze-drying technology is the best dehydration process to preserve shelf-life and allowing avocado to maintain its sensorial and nutritional characteristics. The aim of this work was to determine if the freeze-drying and production condition have an effect on the nutritional quality of the avocado pulp grown in rain-fed and irrigation orchards. Four treatments were applied: non-freeze-dried rain-fed fruits, non-freeze-dried irrigation fruits, freeze-dried rain-fed fruits and freeze-dried irrigation fruits. Results showed that the fruit is made up of 71.4%, 16%, and 12.6% pulp, seed and skin, respectively. The pulp is made up of 71.51%, 19.96%, 2.81%, 0.51% and 1.51% water, lipids, ashes, crude fiber and protein, respectively. Avocado oil is composed by 61%, 18.8%, 11.6% and 7% oleic, palmitic, linoleic, and palmitoleic fatty acids, respectively. The freeze-drying decreased the linoleic acid by 1.43 g/100g. Under rain-fed conditions 4% and 13% less total fat and oleic fatty acid are produced than in irrigation conditions. We conclude that freeze-dried avocado pulp shows slight changes in their nutritional quality.

Nanoemulsion is submicron sized emulsion typically in the range of 20-200 nm. Avocado oil is often used in herbal skin care. The aim of this study was to characterize nanoemulsion hydrogel prepared using avocado oil and sucrose ester stearate as surfactant. The nanoemulsion hydrogel were prepared by nanophase emulsification technique. These formulations were examined using zetasizer to determined the mean diameter of dispersed oil droplets, polydispersibility index (PDI) and zeta potential. Moreover viscosity of the prepared nanoemulsion hydrogel were studied. The results reveled that nanoemulsion prepared with 60% w/w oil, 24% w/w glycerol and 16% w/w surfactant showed droplets size below 200 nm with good polydispersibility index and zeta potential < - 30 mV. The optimum formulation of nanoemulsion was prepared in the form of nanoemulsion hydrogel using carbopols 934 and 940. The results of the viscometer for the nanoemulsion hydrogel showed that the storage modulus (G’) which describes the elasticity of the component were greater than the loss modulus (G”) values which reveals the viscosity of the component.
