RESUMO

Background: The new competency-based undergraduate curriculum (CBME) was implemented in India from the academic year 2019. However, there has been no clear-cut comparison on its effect on the academic performance of the students. Aim and Objective: This study aims to find the comparison between students of traditional and CBME curriculum in the subject of pharmacology based on their academic parameters. It also aims to establish comparison and correlation of academic performance with gender, home place area, and mode of learning used. We also aim to determine whether objective parameters like multiple choice question (MCQ) section of preliminary examination show any correlation with final university examination performance. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional type of study. Seventy-seven students from traditional old curriculum and 98 students from CBME new curriculum batches participated with informed consent. The data for analysis between old and new curriculum batches were done using the mark obtained in final university examination in the subject of pharmacology. Quantitative parameters, that is, total marks overall, total theory marks, total marks in practical and oral viva combined, total marks in internal assessment and MCQ marks of preliminary examination, and qualitative variables such as gender of the student, home place area, that is, rural or urban and mode of learning used (physical or physical and digital) were obtained from the participants. IBM-SPSS version 25 software was used to perform descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, and Pearson’s correlation. Results: The results clearly demonstrate that the old curriculum batch of 2018 performed better than 2019 in overall as well as practical aspects of the subject. Pearson’s correlation between all the quantitative parameters, that is, total marks overall, total theory marks, total marks in practical and oral viva combined, total marks in internal assessment, and MCQ marks of prelims for the batch of 2019 showed positive correlation with each other. Conclusions: This study concludes that the old curriculum batch performed better than new curriculum batch in the subject of pharmacology. MCQ examination held in offline mode helps in better correlation with final university results as compared to online mode.

Background: Theory lectures in pharmacology are covering various oral and parenteral routes of drug administration, mainly focusing on knowledge domain, but soft and psychomotor skills were less taught in undergraduate students. Demonstrating correct method of subcutaneous route of drug administration and communication skills as introduced by competency-based medical education (CBME) competency-based curriculum will help in early acquisition of the skills and minimize the errors in administration in insulin, heparin, and vaccines. Aim and Objectives: The aims of this study were to teach the subcutaneous drug administration (S/C) and communication skills to undergraduate students in pharmacology and to evaluate the perception of students and teachers toward new CBME curriculum. Materials and Methods: Correct technique of subcutaneous drug administration was demonstrated on mannequins after browsing through the videos of S/C route. Students were told to perform it independently on mannequins. Perception of students and staff members were collected with pre-validated questionnaire provided after the practical teaching hours. Results: In our study, majority of students (94%) felt that learning S/C route of drug administration correctly will help in managing various patients like administration of insulin in diabetic patients in their near future days. They were well advanced in communicating with patients regarding usage of medications and were (90%) also in favor of introduction of this experiment in UG curriculum. Conclusions: Our study concluded that subcutaneous teaching technique introduced by CBME curriculum in practical classes was well accepted by students and were more confident in soft skills and psychomotor skills at the end of the study.

The changing disease burden, living conditions and anticipations of end-users in health care have resulted in the decision of regulatory bodies in the Indian medical education system to shift the MBBS curriculum from Traditional to Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME).The efforts taken by the National Medical Commission (NMC) erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI) to successful implementation of the herculean task of shifting curriculum are praiseworthy. MCI initiated a National Faculty Development Programme (FDP) in 2009 in all medical colleges under its ambit.MCI started with five regional centres, which now expanded to 22 centres, out of which 12 are regional centres, and 10 are advanced nodal centres. Nearly 44932 faculties were trained till December 2018. Despite all the advantages of CBME & the efforts taken up by governing bodies, there are many challenges. Some are common for all subjects, but few are unique or specific to a subject. This article views the possible challenges and the way forward for the successful implementation of CBME in Forensic Medicine and Toxicology.

Background: The perceived relevance of a subject/area will decide how much the student will study that. Competency based Medical Curriculum helps students to understand the subject relevance due to its structured format. The feedback from students about subject relevance is needed as they are the primary stakeholders for learning. In this era of involving molecular biology and genetics in medical field, it is very difficult to determine how much to teach a basic subject like embryology. This questionnaire study was done to know the viewpoints of 3rd semester & 5th semester medical students about the relevance and necessity of embryology in medical education. Method: An anonymous questionnaire was sent to 3rd semester, CBME batch & 5th semester students, traditional or regular batch of Sree Balaji Medical College, Chrompet. The pre validated questionnaire contained questions regarding the perceived relevance & importance of embryology. Results: Students reported the relevance of embryology knowledge for learning other medical subjects & they more often acknowledged embryology as being of great importance for their professional careers. This perception has increased especially after introduction of Competency based Medical Curriculum. Overall, study results suggest that medical students have a positive attitude toward embryology undergraduate course. Conclusion: This evidence could be used as an additional motive for the development embryology courses, with special emphasis on practical application of knowledge in clinically-oriented setting.

Background:Medical Council of India is in the revamping mode to align the medical curriculum to the emerging health care needs of the society, by introducing Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME). This new medical curriculum intends toimpartthecompetencies that are needed to produce medical graduates who would function efficiently as Physicians of first contact or basic doctorsin the community. The ECE program would enhance the knowledge, skills, and attitude of the medical graduates if it is implemented. We conducted this study to assess the challengescurrently facedby faculties for the implementation of this new curriculum.Material and Methodology:It is a cross-sectional study conducted at NC Medical College, Israna during the study period was July 2021 to November 2021. The study team regularly scrutinized the data collection process and met periodically to review the study conduct and computing of data. At the end of the study period, the consolidated data were analyzedusing IBM SPSS version 22.Result:A total of 50 teaching faculties, we acknowledged 48questionnairesthat were complete. 96% faculties showed positive and opportunistic be haviourtowards the new curriculum of CBME with constructive ideas but 4% faculties declined.Conclusion:CBME is theparadigm shift in the teaching and learning approach of medical education. Mostof the medical facultymembersare aware of the need and have attained a positive attitude for theapplication of CBME. However significant barriers do exist in the form of manpower, new time mapping and resources which need to be addressed.

PURPOSE: In order to expand and improve community-based medical education (CBME), we attempted to delineate the characters of the primary care physicians interested in medical education and their opinions on the new medical teaching method for ambulatory care settings, Wave model. METHODS: Through mailed questionnaires, we asked the Seoul members of the family physician association and the internal medicine physician association about their interest and opinions of CBME and the Wave model. RESULTS: We received 186 replies from the total 1088 questionnaires (17.1%) sent out. Many of the primary care physicians (141/186; 75.8%) had no experience with CBME. However, 127 (68.7%) were interested in CBME and 121 (65.4%) answered that they were interested in teaching students in their clinic. There were 128 (69.2%) affirmative responses to the Wave model, which was much higher than that to the observation-centered method, 53 (30.3%) (p < 0.0001). Primary care physicians who have affirmative attitudes to adopting the Wave model would select this model as their CBME program (p < 0.0001). Primary care physicians willing to teach students tend to be males (p=0.0085) and younger in age (p=0.0003), have examination rooms for student-patient contact (p < 0.0001), and possess positive attitude to adopting the Wave model (p= 0.0018). CONCLUSION: There are many primary care physicians eager to participate in CBME. They view the Wave model as an effective teaching method. Factors associated with the desire to work as a preceptor include being male and younger in age. having examination rooms for student-patient contact, and possessing a positive attitude to adopting the Wave model.
