Teriomorphicsymbols refer to animals. The importance they exercise can be demonstrated by the permanence of these symbols both in art (parietal paintings to contemporary graffiti) and in the psyche. The perpetuation of symbols and themes is dealt with by studies suchas those by Aby Warburg in art history: Kulturgeschichte, Pathosformel and Mnemosyne. The recurrence of themes, emotions and behaviors reveals the perpetuation of symbols intertwined with culture. This symbolic recurrence, in psychic terms, is understood by C.G. Jung through the notions of archetype and collective unconscious. Contemporary authors of Warburg and Jungand their respective concepts, as well as the presentation of some works of artillustratethe importance of teriomorphic symbols. RESUMO

The estimation of the glomerular ?ltration rate (GFR), whose formulas are usually based on serum creatinine, is a fundamental data in clinical nephrology. The concept of “reference” or usual values adopted by health professionals is essential because of the paucity of research on the usual values of GFR in black Africa. The Modi?cation of Diet in Renal disease (MDRD) and Chronik Kidney disease-Epidemiology collaboration (CKDEpi) equations were determined in non-African populations. Usual values speci?c to the black African population by the evaluation of the formulas of Cockroft and Gault (CG), MDRD and CKD-Epi must be rigorous and are the subject of this study. The GFR was determined using the CG, MDRD and CKD-Epi formulas in a sample of 233 presumed healthy Senegalese adults (118 men, 115 women). SPSS and Excel 2016 software were used for statistical analysis. A value of P<0.05 was considered statistically signi?cant. The determination of the GFR by the Cockcroft method overestimates the CKD values by 10.24 (9.82 - 14.53) with p=0.001 and that of the MDRD by 7.47 (5.91 - 9.03) the CKD values with p=0.001. For a GFR measurement uncertainty of +/- 10%, the CG and CKD formulas cannot be superimposed with a low correlation coef?cient r = 0.52 and a coef?cient of determination R² = 0.28; whereas those of MDRD and CKD-Epi are on the other hand superimposable with r = 0.79 and R² = 0.63. Thus, the CKD-Epi formula should be preferred for determining the usual value of GFR in a healthy person.

RESUMO

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection affects kidneys with different histopathological patterns on kidney biopsy, which commonly include membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) pattern with mixed cryoglobulinemia (CG), thrombotic microangiopathy, membranous nephropathy and small to medium vessel vasculitis. Type 1 MPGN associated with type II mixed CG is the most common glomerulopathy associated with hepatitis C infection. Treatment of these glomerulopathies and cryoglobulinemic renal disease associatedwith HCV infection includes antiviral therapy for HCV, B-cell depletion therapy for prevention of immune complexes and cryoglobulins or nonspecific immunosuppressive therapy. We describe a patient who presented to us with HCV associated MPGN type 1 with cryogloblinemia and detectable HCV RNA, who recovered completely with directly acting antiviral agents (DAA) alone without immunosuppression.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Background: Community-genotype methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CG-MRSA) emerged in the 1990s as a global community pathogen primarily involved in skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) and pneumonia. To date, the CG-MRSA SSTI burden in Latin America (LA) has not been assessed. Objective: The main objective of this study was to report the rate and genotypes of community-genotype methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CG-MRSA) causing community-onset skin and soft tissue infections (CO-SSTIs) in LA over the last two decades. In addition, this research determined relevant data related to SSTIs due to CG-MRSA, including risk factors, other invasive diseases, and mortality. Data sources: Relevant literature was searched and extracted from five major databases: Embase, PubMed, LILACS, SciELO, and Web of Science. Methods: A systematic review was performed, and a narrative review was constructed. Results: An analysis of 11 studies identified epidemiological data across LA, with Argentina presenting the highest percentage of SSTIs caused by CG-MRSA (88%). Other countries had rates of CG-MRSA infection ranging from 0 to 51%. Brazil had one of the lowest rates of CG-MRSA SSTI (4.5-25%). In Argentina, being younger than 50 years of age and having purulent lesions were predictive factors for CG-MRSA CO-SSTIs. In addition, the predominant genetic lineages in LA belonged to sequence types 8, 30, and 5 (ST8, ST30, and ST5). Conclusion: There are significant regional differences in the rates of CG-MRSA causing CO-SSTIs. It is not possible to conclude whether or not CG-MRSA CO-SSTIs resulted in more severe SSTI presentations or in a higher mortality rate.

RESUMO

Plant tissue culture has emerged as an important tool to produce bioactive compounds from various plant species, including the sustainable production of limonoids that are receiving considerable attention due to the benefits associated with human health such as anticancer activities. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the capacity of limonoids aglycone production from callus culture from sweet orange cv. Pera (Citrus sinensis) seeds and identify the compounds produced in this cell line. Callus induction occurred in Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic (2,4-D), malt extract, agar and coconut water. For the analysis and identification of the limonoids, CG-MS-EI ion-positive mode and UPLC-QTOF-ESI were used operating in positive and negative mode. An intense peak corresponding to limonin appeared in the callus extracts at a retention time of 58.1 min. in CG-MS-EI and four major limonoids aglycone by positive ion mode UPLC-QTOF-ESI: limonin, nomilin, deacetylnomilin, and nomilinic acid. The culture medium was efficient at the bioproduction of limonoids aglycone in callus cultures of C. sinensis seeds. Therefore, data obtained from UPLC-QTOF-ESI proved its importance at identifying new compounds that benefit human health, and may assist future work in the identification of known or new limonoids in Citrus species and related genera.

This article aimed to revisit C.G. Jung experiences of katabasis, or in other words the experiences of descending to the underworld, or world of the dead, followed by the return to the world of the living, the anabasis. In psychological terms, these experiences mean confronting the unconscious and the subsequent expansion of consciousness. To revisit C.G. Jung's experiences of katabasis, it was rescued historically (1) in classical antiquity through greek mythology, (2) in the medieval and modern period, through the works of Dante Alighieri, Emmanuel Swedenborg and William Blake, and (3) finally in Jung's own life with an emphasis on the constitution of The Red Book. The katabasis experiences were of vital importance to Jung and culminated in the genesis of analytical psychology. ■

RESUMO

In the Myrtaceae family, the species Eugenia involucrata DC., popularly known as "cerejeira-do-mato", is traditionally used for the antidiarrheal and digestive action of its leaves. However, no studies were found in the literature regarding its antimicrobial and antioxidant potential. In this context, the objective of the present study was to determine the chemical composition by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to evaluate the antimicrobial activity by the broth microdilution technique and the antioxidant activity by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazila (DPPH) method of the essential oil of E. involucrataleaves. GC-MS identified 28 compounds, all sesquiterpenes, corresponding to 89.41% of the essential oil. The antimicrobial activity of the essential oil was observed for all Gram-positive bacteria tested (Staplylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus faecalis,Bacillus subtilis and Staplylococcus aureus) and for yeast Candida albicans. The essential oil presented a reduction capacity of DPPH up to 66.81%, evidencing its antioxidant potential. It is suggested that the antimicrobial and antioxidant action of E. involucrata essential oil is related to the presence of the major compounds, elixene (26.53%), ß-caryophyllene (13.16%), α-copaene (8.41%) and germacrene D (7.17%).

A CG-EM identificou 28 compostos, todos sesquiterpenos, correspondendo a 89,41% do óleo essencial.

Quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping analysis was performed for the mandible morphology in DDD.Cg-Ay/Sgn and C57BL/6J inbred mice. The size and shape of the mandible was analysed by landmark-based geometric morphometrics as the centroid size and principal components (PCs), respectively. The Ay allele at the agouti locus significantly reduced the mandible size in DDD/Sgn background, and substantially altered the mandible shape in both strain backgrounds. Single-QTL scans, by including the agouti locus genotype (Ay or non-Ay) as an additive covariate, identified three significant QTL for the centroid size on chromosomes 5, 6 and 17, along with four suggestive QTL on chromosomes 2, 12, 18 and 19. These QTLs explained 46.85% of the centroid size variation in F2 mice. When the F2Ay and F2 non-Ay mice were analysed separately, additional significant QTL were identified on chromosomes 12 and 15 in F2 non-Ay mice. Single-QTL scans also identified 15 significant QTL for the PC1, PC2 and PC3. When the agouti locus genotype was included as an interactive covariate, nine significant QTLs were identified. Unexpectedly, these agouti-interacting QTLs were identified for relatively minor PCs, for which no significant single-QTL were identified. Therefore, it was suggested that the alteration of the mandible shape in Ay mice was the consequence of interactions between the Ay allele and genes that themselves have relatively small phenotypic effect. Although further in vivo studies are required, we postulated Pkd1 as a possible candidate gene underlying QTL for the centroid size on chromosome 17.

RESUMO

Most of the microorganisms display adhesion molecules on their surface which help them to bind and interact with the host cell during infection. Adhesion molecules help mycobacteria to colonize and invade immune system of the host, and also trigger immune response explicated by the host against the infection. Hence, understanding the signalling pathways illustrated by these molecules to enhance our knowledge on mycobacterial survival and persistence inside the host cell is required. Hence, this review was focussed on the role of adhesion molecules and their receptor molecules. The various mechanisms adopted by adhesion molecules to bind with the specific receptors on the host cell and their role in invasion and persistence of mycobacterium inside the host cell are explained.

RESUMO

Background: PPH is responsible for quarter of maternal deaths occurring worldwide and its incidence is increasing in developed world. According to Confidential Enquiries into Maternal and Child Health (CEMACH) report obstetric hemorrhage occurs in around3.7 per 1000 births. The objective of the study is that it was a prospective randomized comparative study of misoprostol and balloon tamponade via condom catheter to prevent postpartum hemorrhage in normal delivered patients at MYH.Methods: A sample size of 200 normal delivered patients between age group 18 and 45 years is chosen with excessive bleeding after third stage of labour and after administration of oxytocics. These 200 patients are divided into two groups: First group receiving Misoprostol and applying condom catheter in other group. Both groups are evaluated for PPH.Results: It was found that CG balloon condom catheter was a much better and more effective alternative in controlling PPH than Misoprostol as the failure rate with CG balloon condom catheter were  much less than that  with misoprostol. Due to its cost effectiveness and being easily available at primary health center and due to absence of any drug reactions and easy technique of formation makes it a better modality in controlling PPH even at PHC.Conclusions: Patients with condom catheter in situ must show better result than patients receiving misoprostol.

RESUMO

Background: Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is a life-threatening complication of delivery. The most common cause of PPH is uterine atony. Intrauterine balloon tamponade has been suggested as an effective, easily administered minimally invasive treatment option to control uterine bleeding while preserving the mother’s ability to bear additional children. Methods: Twenty women with normal vaginal delivery were studied over a period of six months, 10 were inserted conventional balloon tamponade and rest 10 were inserted CG balloon and outcome studied in terms of time to assemble, leakage, expulsion, lumen occlusion, volume of fluid used, time to arrest bleeding, cost, drainage port, inflation deflation interval. Results: Most of the women were para 4 or more, unbooked belonging to age group of 20-30. Mean time to assemble Condom balloon tamponade was 1.8min   and that in CG balloon was 1.2 minute. There was leakage and expulsion in two and lumen occlusion in three in the conventional balloon catheter. In the second group there was  no leakage ,lumen occlusion  or expulsion . There is uterine drainage port present in CG balloon which is characteristic of it which helps in determining the actual blood loss in real time. The inflation deflation interval and mean volume of fluid are almost same in both the groups. Conclusions: Both conventional balloon and CG balloon are effective and lifesaving in low resource setting with few advantages of CG balloon over conventional balloon tamponade.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: The interest in the use of green tea (Camellia sinensis) (L.) Kuntze (Theaceae) products have increased in the last few years due to its medicinal properties. In the present study, we proposed that headspace solid phase microextraction, in combination with gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometric could be an efficient method to assess the volatile compounds and to ensure the quality control of C. sinensis. We have also compared the anatomical leaf of different commercial green tea samples, analyzed the information in their labels and determined the presence of foreign materials, moisture content, total ashes and microorganisms. Among the 30 analyzed samples, six were identified as C. sinensis according to the anatomical study; 83.4% were not in accordance with the specified limits for foreign matter and 6.6% for moisture content. All samples presented total ashes in accordance with the current legislation. The analysis indicated the presence of several different volatile organic compounds, being terpenes, hydrocarbons and alcohols the major ones. Microbiological analysis showed that 13.3% and 16.6% of the samples exceeded the limits for counts of molds and yeasts, and for mesophilic bacteria, respectively. 73.3% presented E. coli above the established sanitary limits.

Essential oils have aroused interest in the industrial sector due to the multitude of potential applications, especially with respect their antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, among others. The objective of this study was to determine the chemical composition of the essential oil from the leaves of Myrcia oblongata DC by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). To evaluate the antioxidant potential of the oil by using the free radical capture method with 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH); to test the oil antimicrobial activity using the broth microdilution method; and to evaluate the repellency and fumigant potential of the oil on Dermanyssus gallinae (Degeer, 1778). The GC-MS analysis resulted in the identification of 30 oil constituents, with the bulk of the composition identified as caryophyllene oxide (22.03%) and trans-verbenol (11.94%). The oil presented moderate antioxidant activity compared to the synthetic antioxidant 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxytoluene (BHT). Antimicrobial activity of the essential oil showed an inhibitory activity on Gram-positive bacteria, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus epidermidis and for the yeast Candida albicans, and showed no activity against Gram-negative bacteria. All concentrations of the essential oil used in the fumigation test on D. gallinae resulted in mortality below 20%. For the repellency test, significant potential was observed for the concentration of 10%.

ABSTRACT: Essential oils are the most important compounds produced during secondary metabolism in aromatic plants. Essential oils are volatile, have characteristic odor and are used as defensive agents by plants. In pepper, it is possible to say that essential oils are the “flavor fingerprint” of each species. In the present article, eight species of pepper were studied in order to extract their essential oils and oleoresins, test their antibacterial and antifungal activities and also to identify the compounds present in the most bioactive samples. Results demonstrated that two essential oils [Pimenta dioica (L.) Merr. and Schinus terebinthifolius] and three oleoresins (Schinus terebinthifolius and Piper nigrum white and black) recorded significant antimicrobial activity. These active essential oils and oleoresins are interesting for use in biotechnological processes employed in food, pharmaceutical and other industries.
