RESUMO

Forage production in the Brazilian semiarid region can be enhanced by irrigation and shading to maximize water use. We evaluated the productivity and morphological characteristics of buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris) intercropped with butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) under shade conditions using an irrigated area with an artificial shading system (26, 39, 55%, or full sunlight). Butterfly pea was implemented in half of the land parcels in a randomized block using a split plot design with three replications. One hundred twenty days after planting was designated as the uniformity cut and the cutting was performed every 45 days for four consecutive cycles. The morphological analysis was performed during the first and fourth cycle, and the herbage mass was determined. The shadow had a quadratic effect on the leaf appearance rate in the first cycle, while shading had a quadratic deviation effect on the leaf elongation rate in the second cycle and an increased linear effect on the length of the sheet in the first cycle. Shading had a quadratic effect on the herbage mass in the third cycle and decreased linearity in the fourth cycle. The highest percentage of buffel grass was found in the single system in the first and second cycles. In addition, we observed a decreased linear effect of shade in the first cycle and the quadratic deviation effect of shade in the second cycle. A quadratic effect of shade was observed in the third and fourth cycles. The survival of the butterfly pea had a quadratic effect with a minimum rate level of 21% shading. The crude protein content showed a system effect in four cycles with higher crude protein in the intercropping system in the first and second cycles. There was also a quadratic effect of shade in the third cycle and linear increase in the fourth cycle. In conclusion, shading increased the leaf appearance rates and elongation at intermediate levels. In addition, a high level of shading increased the leaf length and survival of butterfly pea while it decreased the mass of the forage produced.

The objective of this present experiment was to determine intake and apparent digestibility of dry matter and nutrients, nitrogen (NB) and water balances (WB) of sheep fed with buffel grass silages. The buffel grass cultivars used were Tanzania, Buchuma and Biloela. 21 male, castrated, crossbred Santa Ines x Non defined genotype sheep, with initial body weight of 31.8±3.16kg were used, kept in metabolic cages. The experimental design was completely randomized with seven replicates. No differences were observed in dry matter intake in g/day (919.2) and % of body weight (2.9). In general, digestibility coefficients of dry matter varied from 37.7% to 60.0%. The NB and WB were positive, with higher NB values in sheep fed with Tanzania (5.1g/day) and Biloela (3.9g/day) and higher WB in animals fed with Buchuma (1.38kg/animal/day) and Biloela (1.42kg/animal/day). All cultivars of buffel grass evaluated (Tanzania, Buchuma and Biloela) presented adequate chemical composition, where the silage of buffel grass used corresponded to 60% of the total daily water intake by sheep.

Bacteria capable of low rank coal (LRC) biotransform were isolated from environmental samples altered with coal in the mine "The Cerrejon". A protocol was designed to select strains more capable of LRC biotransform, the protocol includes isolation in a selective medium with LRC powder, qualitative and quantitative tests for LRC solubilization in solid and liquid culture medium. Of 75 bacterial strains isolated, 32 showed growth in minimal salts agar with 5 % carbon. The strains that produce higher values of humic substances (HS) have a mechanism of solubilization associated with pH changes in the culture medium, probably related to the production of extracellular alkaline substances by bacteria. The largest number of strains and bacteria with more solubilizing activity on LRC were isolated from sludge with high content of carbon residue and rhizosphere of Typha domingensis and Cenchrus ciliaris grown on sediments mixed with carbon particles, this result suggests that obtaining and solubilization capacity of LRC by bacteria may be related to the microhabitat where the populations originated.

RESUMO

The growth, biomass production and photosynthesis of Cenchrus ciliaris was studied under the canopies of 17 yr old Acacia tortilis trees in semi arid tropical environment. On an average the full grown canopy of A. tortilis at the spacing of 4x4 m allowed 55% of total Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) which in turn increased Relative Humidity (RH) and reduced under canopy temperature to -1.75oC over the open air temperature. C. ciliaris attained higher height under the shade of A. tortilis. The tiller production and leaf area index decreased marginally under the shade of tree canopies as compared to the open grown grasses. C. ciliaris accumulated higher chlorophyll a and b under the shade of tree canopies indicating its shade adaptation potential. The assimilatory functions such as rate of photosynthesis, transpiration, stomatal conductance, photosynthetic water use efficiency (PN/TR) and carboxylation efficiency (PN/CINT) decreased under the tree canopies due to low availability of PAR. The total biomass production in term of fresh and dry weight decreased under the tree canopies. On average of 2 yr C. ciliaris had produced 12.78 t ha-1 green and 3.72 t ha-1 dry biomass under the tree canopies of A. tortilis. The dry matter yield reduced to 38% under the tree canopies over the open grown grasses. The A. tortilis + C. ciliaris maintained higher soil moisture, organic carbon content and available N P K for sustainable biomass production for the longer period. The higher accumulation of crude protein, starch, sugar and nitrogen in leaves and stem of C. ciliaris indicates that this grass species also maintained its quality under A. tortilis based silvopastoral system. The photosynthesis and dry matter accumulation are closely associated with available PAR indicating that for sustainable production of this grass species in the silvopasture systems for longer period about 55% or more PAR is required.
