RESUMO

In Purpose: The fabrication technique can influence the mechanical properties of Cobalt-Chromium (Co-Cr) dental alloys. Hence, the present study aims to determine the corrosion resistance and thermal expansion of alloys manufactured using three contemporary techniques. Material and Methods: A total of nine specimens of Co-Cr alloy were prepared according to ISO 22674 by each one of the three manufacturing processes (three in each process); conventional casting, direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) and milling (MIL). All these specimens were tested for coefficient of thermal expansion and corrosion resistance. The data was tabulated and analyzed statistically. Results: The difference in the thermal expansion of alloys fabricated using three techniques was non-significant at almost all the temperatures from 50 ºC to 950 ºC (p>0.05), except 450 ºC and 600 °C. The polarization resistance of specimens manufactured using the conventional method was more compared to DMLS and MIL at pH 5 (Conventional>MIL>DMLS) (p<0.001). Conclusion: The thermal expansion behavior of alloys manufactured using the three selected techniques were similar, whereas, at acidic pH, the corrosion resistance of conventional and MIL were better than the DMLS.

ABSTRACT Objective: To determine the effect of sprue design on the marginal accuracy of the casting. Material and Methods: It was an experimental in-vitro study. There are forty-four crowns of single sprue group with a forty-four double sprue group that was compared in 6 different locations of the margin. The sections were inspected under a microscope at 50X magnification and took a micrograph. The radius from an actual casting edge to a possibly excellent margin was then documented as marginal discrepancy (d), in µm. The marginal discrepancy was documented for each of the six sections per casting. Thus 264 sections were measured for each group. Data were analysed using (ANOVA) for analysis of variance. For bivariate analyses, Chi-square and Student t test were used. The significance level was set at < 0.05. Results: The marginal discrepancy was greater in the single sprue group of cast crown (43.1 ± 4.74 µm) and in double sprue group of cast crown was less (25.7 ± 4.25 µm). This difference is statistically significant (p<0.05). The correlation between single sprue group of casting with a double sprue group of casting by student's t-test where determination height was 95%. Conclusion: Double sprue design produces a higher accurate margin than single sprue design in the nickel-chromium alloy cast crown.

Conclusions: The assumptions of normality were evaluated with the Shapiro-Wilk test. The statistical analyzes were Student s t test and U Mann-Whitney test. The CPCI obtained a lower marginal and internal discrepancy compared to the CPC, but no statistically significant differences were found (p >0.05) between both techniques. Conclusions: Although in most of the evaluation points the copings made by the CPCI presented better values of marginal and internal adaptation compared to the CPCC, these results are only descriptive values that were not conclusive, since in most of the evaluated points there was no statistically significant difference (p >0.05). We observed that most of the values of both techniques are within the clinically acceptable range.

RESUMO

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of heat treatment (tempering) on the sliding mechanics of stainless steel Chrome Nickel (CrNi) orthodontic wires. Methods: A universal testing machine EMIC DL 2000 was used at a speed of 10 mm/minute for reading-out the sliding strength and friction between brackets and wires, by simulating the sliding mechanics in a fixed orthodontic appliance. The results were submitted to ANOVA variance test for statistical analysis at the level of 5% (p<0.05). Results: The results indicated that depending on the type of bracket, wire and type of treatment, the groups without heat treatment showed higher mean static friction values, except for groups with CrNi GAC wire and conventional brackets, which showed no significant difference with and without heat treatment; and the group with self-ligated brackets and CrNi GAC wires that showed the lowest mean static friction values with heat treatment. Conclusion: The heat treatment reduced the static friction values on CrNi Morelli wires for any combination of brackets (conventional and self-ligated types) and commercial brands. For the CrNi GAC wires, there was a reduction in friction values only in the combination with In-Ovation R/GAC self-ligated brackets

RESUMO

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE; Compare the outcome of spinal deformity correction between Ti-Ti and CrCo-Ti rods for the treatment of spinal Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) using rods mentioned with all pedicle screws and translation technique. METHOD; 59 patients operated for spinal deformity (Lenke 1 or 2) AIS. The patients were divided into two groups by random allocation using Ti-Ti rods (n = 29) and CrCo-Ti rods (n = 30) and the alone difference among them in the surgical procedure was rod material (Ti-Ti or CrCo-Ti rods) and finally, radiological outcomes were compared preoperatively, postoperatively and at last follow-up for 12 months. RESULTS; Patients' main curve correction after surgical procedure regardless type of rod was 48.95±11.04 (13-75) degree. Success rate of spinal deformity correction following surgical procedure regardless of type of administered rod was 86.76 ± 11.30 percent (62.5-100%). Mean of deformity correction rate was 91.49±10.67% using CrCo-Ti rods versus 81.86±9.88% using Ti-Ti rods (P-value=0.01). Angle change was 3.29±6.60 for kyphosis angle and 0.59±7.76 for lordosis angle. Rate of main curve correction was not significantly different considering patients' gender (P-value0.657). Main curve correction success rate was in association with patients' age and type of rod (P-value=0.054, r=-1.863 and P-value=0.001, r=8.865 respectively). CONCLUSION; CrCo-Ti rods have the ability to produce higher correction rates in AIS compared to Ti-Ti rod of the same diameter. CrCo-Ti rods provide significant and stable spinal correction, especially in correction of main curve. This rate was associated with patients' age and type of rod administered but not gender.

Cobalt-chromium alloys have been applied to dental porcelain fused to metal (PFM) restorations over the past decades owing to their excellent corrosion resistance, good biocompatibility and low price. The production of CoCr metal-ceramic restorations has always been based on traditional lost-wax casting techniques. However, in recent years, selective laser melting (SLM) is becoming more and more highly valued by dental laboratories and dental practitioners due to its individuation, precision and efficiency. This paper mainly reviews the recent researches on the production process of copings, microstructure, mechanical property, metal-ceramic bond strength, fit of copings, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of SLM CoCr metal-ceramic alloy.

RESUMO

Choosing the right chemical cleanser for removable partial dentures is a challenge, because they present an acrylic and a metallic portion, which should be cleaned and not damaged. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess surface changes of cobalt chromium alloys immersed in diferente cleaners solutions: 0.05% sodium hypochlorite, 4.2% acetic acid, 0.05% sodium salicylate, sodium perborate (Corega Tabs®) and 0.2% peracetic acid. Material and Methods: One hundred and twenty circular specimens (10 mm in diameter) of two commercial available Co-Cr alloys were tested: GM 800 ® (Dentaurum) and Co-Cr® (DeguDent). The samples were randomly divided into tem experimental groups (n=10), according to the trend mark of alloy and cleaners solutions in which they were immersed, and two control groups, in which the samples of the two alloys were immersed in distilled water. Evaluations were performed through roughness measurement (rugosimeter Surftest 211, Mitutoyo), visual evaluation with stereomicroscope (Stereo Discovery 20, Carl Zeiss) and scanning electron microscope surface (JSM, 6360 SEM, JEOL), at experimental times T0 before immersions, T1 - after one immersion, and T2 - after 90 immersions. Intergroup comparison for the effect of immersion in the different cleanser agents was evaluated through ANOVA/Tukey tests (p≤0.05). The effect of the time in the immersion of each alloy was evaluated by t-pared test (p≤0.05). The two alloys were compared using the t-Student test. Results: The analysis of roughness and microscopy showed that surface changes were significantly greater in groups submitted to 0.05% sodium hypochlorite after 90 immersions (T2). When comparing the two alloys, a similar behavior of roughness was observed for the cleaning agents. However, alloy GM 800® showed significant statistical difference for roughness variations in experimental times (Δ1 and Δ2), when immersed in sodium 0.05% hypochlorite. The number of exposures of the alloys to the cleaning agents showed a negative influence when using sodium hypochlorite solution. Conclusions: It is possible to conclude that 0.05% sodium hypochlorite has caused the greatest apparent damage to alloy surface. (AU)

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of two different metal conditioners for non-precious metal alloys for the bonding of porcelain to a cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Disk-shaped specimens (2.5x10.0 mm) were cast with Co-Cr alloy and used as adherend materials. The bonding surfaces were polished with a 600-grid silicon carbide paper and airborne-particle abraded using 110 microm alumina particles. Bonding specimens were fabricated by applying and firing either of the metal conditioners on the airborne-particle abraded surface, followed by firing porcelain into 5 mm in diameter and 3 mm in height. Specimens without metal conditioner were also fabricated. Shear bond strength for each group (n=8) were measured and compared (alpha=.05). Sectional view of bonding interface was observed by SEM. EDS analysis was performed to determine the chemical elements of metal conditioners and to determine the failure modes after shear test. RESULTS: There were significant differences among three groups, and two metal conditioner-applied groups showed significantly higher values compared to the non-metal conditioner group. The SEM observation of the sectional view at bonding interface revealed loose contact at porcelain-alloy surface for non-metal conditioner group, however, close contact at both alloy-metal conditioner and metal conditioner-porcelain interfaces for both metal conditioner-applied groups. All the specimens showed mixed failures. EDS analysis showed that one metal conditioner was Si-based material, and another was Ti-based material. Si-based metal conditioner showed higher bond strengths compared to the Ti-based metal conditioner, but exhibited more porous failure surface failure. CONCLUSION: Based on the results of this study, it can be stated that the application of metal conditioner is recommended for the bonding of porcelain to cobalt-chromium alloys.

RESUMO

Objective To evaluate mid?term clinical outcomes associated with total hip arthroplasty using metal?on?met?al prosthesis with large diameter femoral head. Methods From March 2007 to December 2009, 153 patients (177 hips) with ad?vanced hip diseases undergoing large diameter femoral head metal?on?metal total hip arthroplasty in our hospital were retrospec?tively analyzed in this study. Clinical physical examination and radiographic examination were used to evaluate hip function and the incidence of complications (implant loosening and inflammatory pseudotumor);ICP?MS method was used to determine serum cobalt ion and chromium ion levels and compare with normal values;revision was set as the prosthesis endpoint to evaluate the five year survival rate of implant. Results A total of 145 patients (169 hips) were followed up for average 72.4 months (67-80 months), the follow?up rate was 94.8% (145/153). For the involved patients, 85 were male (104 hips), 60 were female (65 hips);age 20-78 years old, average 49.3±12.6 years old. All patients received ASRTM?XL large femoral head metal?on?metal to?tal hip arthroplasty operation. At the end of follow?up, the average Harris hip score improved from 44.2±12.6 points preopera?tively to 91.5±5.7 points. A total of 8 patients received revision, 3 for acetabular implant spinout?out and 5 for hip inflammato?ry pseudotumor. The prosthetic survival rate 5 years after operation was 95.3% (161/169) for revision. Serum cobalt (2.89 μg/L) and chromium (3.31 μg/L) ion levels were significantly increased compared with normal value (<0.5 μg/L). Conclusion For the fixation and friction interface disadvantages, acetabular implant spinout?out and inflammatory pseudotumor might occur for patient receiving large femoral head metal?on?metal THA. The mid?term prosthetic survival rate was also low, with metal ion levels increased significantly. For primary THA, large femoral head metal?on?metal prosthesis cannot be the first choice.

RESUMO

Alveolar bone loss and deformation can be a risk factor in removable prosthetic restoration treatment for partially or fully edentulous patients. The use of implants to solve this problem could improve the support, retention and stability of removable restoration. Attachments used in implant overdenture are versatile. The attachment should be selected according to the patients' conditions. Milled bar has been chosen when readymade bar could not be used because of the narrow distance between implants or firm stability and support of supra-structure were needed. Milled bar design is able to provide cross arch stabilization and comfortability to patients. However, it needs skilled laboratory procedures. Recently, the fabrication of milled bar has become simple and its suitability has been improved through the development of CAD/CAM system. In a 67-year-old female Alzheimer's disease patient with 8 implant fixtures on the fully edentulous site of mandible, implant overdenture with using milled bar and magnet attachment was planned. As rapid treatment was required, CAD/CAM system was used to make a simple laboratory procedure instead of a traditional fabrication process. With this system, implant overdenture with milled bar can be fabricated esthetically and functionally.

RESUMO

Objective To investigate the cytocompatibility of the liching liquids of Co-Cr alloy and Ti alloy on human gingival fibroblasts (HGF). Methods The HGF were treated in vitro with leaching liquids of Co-Cr alloy and Ti alloy, respectively. The DMEM cell medium containing 10% fetal bovine serum was served as a negative control. The viability of HGF treated by two dental alloys were evaluated by means of MTT, and the contents of intracellular reduced glutathione (rGSH) were assayed by kits. The tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) contents were determined in the culture supernatant by ELISA in two groups. The effects of these alloys on the expression of caspase-3 were examined by real time-PCR method. Results Compared with the control group, HGF treated with Co-Cr alloy leaching liquids showed a lower viability ( P <0.05), while Ti alloy leaching liquid promoted the proliferation of HGF. In Co-Cr alloy group, the rGSH content was significantly decreased (P<0.05), while TNF-α content was significantly increased (P<0.05) compared with control group. There were no significant differences in rGSH and TNF-α contents between the Ti alloy group and control group (P>0.05). The expression of caspase-3 was significantly higher in Co-Cr alloy group than that of control group (P<0.05), while there was no significant difference in the expression of caspase-3 between Ti alloy group and control group. Conclusion Results suggest that Co-Cr alloy possesses cytotoxicity, while there is better cell compatibility for Ti alloy.

OBJECTIVE: This in vitro study verified the resistance to corrosion of metallic brackets, evaluating the superficial aspects in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the residual components. METHODS: The sample consisted of 17 sets of brackets of four different metallic alloys: Titanium, Cobalt-Chromium, Stainless steel with low nickel concentration and with titanium nitride coating (NiTi). Twelve sets were submitted to corrosion by immersion in 50 ml of artificial saliva (pH 6.5) and four in saliva (pH 6.5) containing fluoride (2 g/l), all at a temperature of 37 ºC and analyzed after 7, 9 and 11 weeks. One was kept as control set. The analysis consisted in qualitative evaluation of the corrosion by the images obtained on the SEM, in semi-quantitative evaluation of chemical composition of the surface residue by SEM-EDS and the amount of ions released in saliva on evaluation of atomic absorption spectrophotometry. RESULTS: The results showed that the pure titanium brackets and the ones with low nickel concentration were superior regarding resistance to corrosion. The cobalt-chromium alloy showed the greatest corrosion. In the presence of fluoride, it was observed greater variation in all alloys, especially in the ones of NiTi coated steel and the ones of cobalt-chromium. CONCLUSION: Although observed corrosion on the SEM, the spectrophotometry showed low ions release in the artificial saliva, however, the presence of fluoride negatively affected the corrosion resistance.

Chemical disinfectants are usually associated with mechanical methods to remove stains and reduce biofilm formation. This study evaluated the effect of disinfectants on release of metal ions and surface roughness of commercially pure titanium, metal alloys, and heat-polymerized acrylic resin, simulating 180 immersion trials. Disk-shaped specimens were fabricated with commercially pure titanium (Tritan), nickel-chromium-molybdenum-titanium (Vi-Star), nickel-chromium (Fit Cast-SB Plus), and nickel-chromium-beryllium (Fit Cast-V) alloys. Each cast disk was invested in the flasks, incorporating the metal disk to the heat-polymerized acrylic resin. The specimens (n=5) were immersed in these solutions: sodium hypochlorite 0.05%, Periogard, Cepacol, Corega Tabs, Medical Interporous, and Polident. Deionized water was used as a control. The quantitative analysis of metal ion release was performed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ELAN DRC II). A surface analyzer (Surftest SJ-201P) was used to measure the surface roughness (µm). Data were recorded before and after the immersions and evaluated by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). The nickel release proved most significant with the Vi-Star and Fit Cast-V alloys after immersion in Medical Interporous. There was a significant difference in surface roughness of the resin (p=0.011) after immersion. Cepacol caused significantly higher resin roughness. The immersion products had no influence on metal roughness (p=0.388). It could be concluded that the tested alloys can be considered safe for removable denture fabrication, but disinfectant solutions as Cepacol and Medical Interporous tablet for daily denture immersion should be used with caution because it caused greater resin surface roughness and greater ion release, respectively.

OBJECTIVE: Removable partial dentures (RPD) require different hygiene care, and association of brushing and chemical cleansing is the most recommended to control biofilm formation. However, the effect of cleansers has not been evaluated in RPD metallic components. The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro the effect of different denture cleansers on the weight and ion release of RPD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five specimens (12x3 mm metallic disc positioned in a 38x18x4 mm mould filled with resin), 7 cleanser agents [Periogard (PE), Cepacol (CE), Corega Tabs (CT), Medical Interporous (MI), Polident (PO), 0.05 percent sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), and distilled water (DW) (control)] and 2 cobalt-chromium alloys [DeguDent (DD), and VeraPDI (VPDI)] were used for each experimental situation. One hundred and eighty immersions were performed and the weight was analyzed with a high precision analytic balance. Data were recorded before and after the immersions. The ion release was analyzed using mass spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD post hoc test at 5 percent significance level. RESULTS: Statistical analysis showed that CT and MI had higher values of weight loss with higher change in VPDI alloy compared to DD. The solutions that caused more ion release were NaOCl and MI. CONCLUSIONS: It may be concluded that 0.05 percent NaOCl and Medical Interporous tablets are not suitable as auxiliary chemical solutions for RPD care.

RESUMO

The interest in using titanium to fabricate removable partial denture (RPD) frameworks has increased, but there are few studies evaluating the effects of casting methods on clasp behavior. OBJECTIVE: This study compared the occurrence of porosities and the retentive force of commercially pure titanium (CP Ti) and cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) removable partial denture circumferential clasps cast by induction/centrifugation and plasma/vacuum-pressure. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 72 frameworks were cast from CP Ti (n=36) and Co-Cr alloy (n=36; control group). For each material, 18 frameworks were casted by electromagnetic induction and injected by centrifugation, whereas the other 18 were casted by plasma and injected by vacuum-pressure. For each casting method, three subgroups (n=6) were formed: 0.25 mm, 0.50 mm, and 0.75 mm undercuts. The specimens were radiographed and subjected to an insertion/removal test simulating 5 years of framework use. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's to compare materials and cast methods (α=0.05). RESULTS: Three of 18 specimens of the induction/centrifugation group and 9 of 18 specimens of plasma/vacuum-pressure cast presented porosities, but only 1 and 7 specimens, respectively, were rejected for simulation test. For Co-Cr alloy, no defects were found. Comparing the casting methods, statistically significant differences (p<0.05) were observed only for the Co-Cr alloy with 0.25 mm and 0.50 mm undercuts. Significant differences were found for the 0.25 mm and 0.75 mm undercuts dependent on the material used. For the 0.50 mm undercut, significant differences were found when the materials were induction casted. CONCLUSION: Although both casting methods produced satisfactory CP Ti RPD frameworks, the occurrence of porosities was greater in the plasma/vacuum-pressure than in the induction/centrifugation method, the latter resulting in higher clasp rigidity, generating higher retention force values.

The purpose of this study was to compare, by means of microhardness testing and metallurgical characterization techniques as metallography, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), mechanical and metallurgical properties of welded joints by TIG and brazing methods in a dental alloy based on Ni-Cr (FIT-CAST SB). The studied regions in each sample were the base metal (MB), the heat affected zone (ZTA) and the fusion zone (ZF). Forty cylindrical bodies-of-proof, stick-shaped, with 2.5mm diameter and 18.0mm in length were made from dental casting by centrifugation (lost wax technique). Twenty cylinders were used for each technique, which formed, after the welding, groups of ten samples for each procedure. The microstructure of the MB is presented as a matrix of a solid solution based on Ni-Cr with a typical dendritic arrangement of eutectic structure. The alloy presented metallic precipitates in the interdendritic region of the eutectic structure. The semiquantitative chemical analysis obtained by EDS technique showed results consistent with the quantitative chemical composition provided by the alloy manufacturer. In the brazing method, the MB and ZF showed different microstructures. The ZF showed a rough dendritic morphology with the presence of precipitates and porosities. The semiquantitative chemical analysis by EDS of the ZF had very similar results to those obtained for the MB...

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to evaluate the retention force of T-bar clasps made from commercially pure titanium (CP Ti) and cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy by the insertion/removal test simulating 5 years use. Thirty-six frameworks were cast from CP Ti (n=18) and Co-Cr alloy (n=18) with identical prefabricated patterns on refractory casts from a distal extension mandibular hemi-arch segment. The castings were made on a vacuum-pressure machine, under vacuum and argon atmosphere. Each group was subdivided in three, corresponding to 0.25 mm, 0.50 mm and 0.75 mm undercuts, respectively. No polishing procedures were performed to ensure uniformity. The specimens were subjected to an insertion/removal test and data was analyzed statistically to compare CP Ti and Co-Cr alloy in the same undercut (Student's t-test for independent samples) and each material in different undercuts (one-way ANOVA) (p=0.05). Comparisons between materials revealed significant differences (p=0.017) only for the 0.50-mm undercut. No significant differences (p>0.05) were found when comparing the same material for the undercuts. It may be concluded that for different undercuts, both Co-Cr alloy and CP Ti had no significant differences for T-bar clasps; CP Ti showed the lowest retention force values when compared to Co-Cr alloy in each undercut, but with significant difference only for the 0.50-mm undercut; and both materials maintained the retentive capacity during the simulation test.
