RESUMO

Clostridia inhabiting in jiupei and pit mud plays key roles in the formation of flavour during the fermentation process of Luzhou-flavour baijiu. However, the differences of Clostridial communities between jiupei and pit mud remains unclear. Here, the species assembly, succession, and metabolic capacity of Clostridial communities between jiupei and pit mud were analysed by high-throughput sequencing and pure culture approaches. The ratio of Clostridial biomass to bacterial biomass in the pit mud was relatively stable (71.5%-91.2%) throughout the fermentation process. However, it varied widely in jiupei (0.9%-36.5%). The dominant Clostridial bacteria in jiupei were Clostridium (19.9%), Sedimentibacter (8.8%), and Hydrogenispora (7.2%), while Hydrogenispora (57.2%), Sedimentibacter (5.4%), and Caproiciproducens (4.9%) dominated in the Clostridial communities in pit mud. The structures of Clostridial community in pit mud and jiupei were significantly different (P=0.001) throughout fermentation. Isolated Clostridial strains showed different metabolic capacities of volatile fatty acids in pure culture. Spatial and temporal heterogeneity of Clostridial communities existed in the baijiu fermentation pit, which was closely related to the main flavour components of Luzhou-flavour baijiu.

RESUMO

Background: An outbreak investigation for food poisoning in a school of rural Maharashtra was carried out. This school had central kitchen for children staying at hostel. During monsoon season occurrence of acute gastroenteritis diseases is common and hence it important to investigate each and every suspected outbreak presenting with similar symptoms to that of acute gastroenteritis.Methods: It was a retrospective and prospective study design. All 140 children who ate food from central kitchen were interviewed and followed up. Median incubation period was obtained from the 12 children who fitted into case definition which was given by integrated diseases control program of Maharashtra. Environmental and food sampling along with laboratory investigations was done for diagnosis.Results: Total 12 children had symptoms of food poisoning. The median incubation period was around 8 hours. Gastrointestinal symptoms were the commonest reported by all the 12 children. It was found out that all the symptomatic children had eaten laddu brought from outside and stored in unhygienic conditions.Conclusions: Eating of laddu which were stored in unhygienic conditions had resulted into growth of Clostridia streptofaecalis in it causing food poisoning to children.

ABSTRACT: A 6-year-old Fuzzy Lop rabbit was referred to a veterinary hospital with a complaint of lameness. In addition to a vertebral subluxation, two radiopaque and well-defined structures were revealed by radiographic evaluation. Ultrasonographically, the masses were characterized as parenchymal structures with diffuse mineralization and formation of reverberation artifacts, suggesting presence of gas. These two structures were excised during a laparotomy and Clostridium tertium was isolated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of C. tertium infection in a pet animal.


RESUMO: Um coelho de seis anos de idade da raça Fuzzy Lop foi encaminhado a um hospital veterinário devido a uma queixa de claudicação. Além de uma subluxação vertebral, duas estruturas radiopacas e bem delimitadas foram identificadas pela avaliação radiográfica. Em um exame ultrassonográfico, as massas foram caracterizadas como formações parenquimatosas e heterogêneas, apresentando mineralização difusa e com formação de artefatos de reverberação, sugerindo a presença de gás. Estas duas estruturas foram extirpadas durante uma laparotomia e Clostridium tertium foi isolado. Este é o primeiro relato de infecção por C. tertium em um animal de estimação.

As mionecroses são enfermidades altamente fatais, representadas pelo carbúnculo sintomático e edema maligno. Com o objetivo de determinar a ocorrência dos diferentes clostrídios envolvidos nas mionecroses em bovinos no Brasil, foi realizado um estudo retrospectivo a partir de 30 casos suspeitos de carbúnculo sintomático e edema maligno. Empregou-se a técnica de estreptavidina biotina peroxidase em tecidos de bovinos fixados em formol e incluídos em parafina de arquivos de patologia de diferentes estados do país. Foram detectados 21 Clostridium chauvoei (70%), cincoClostridium septicum(17%), seguidos de doisC. chauvoeiassociado aoC. septicum (7%), um C. chauvoei mais Clostridium sordellii (3%) e um C. chauvoei mais Clostridium novyi tipo A (3%). Este é o primeiro diagnóstico de C. novyi tipo A no Brasil, e o primeiro relato da ocorrência de C. chauvoei associado à lesão no miocárdio. Os achados da maior ocorrência de C. chauvoei e C. septicum corroboram com estudos anteriores no país. Estes dados sobre a ocorrência dos agentes responsáveis pelas mionecroses em diferentes estados do país são de extrema importância frente às decisões relativas ao controle dessas enfermidades.


Clostridial myonecroses are highly fatal diseases, characterized by black leg and malignant oedema. In order to determine the occurrence of the different agents involved in Brazilian clostridial myonecrosis, a retrospective study was conducted concerning 30 suspected cases of blackleg and gas gangrene using a streptavidin-biotin peroxidase technique in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues of cattle from the archives of pathology of different states of Brazil. The clostridia predominantly detected wereClostridium chauvoei(70%), followed by Clostridium septicum (5 cases or 17%), C. chauvoei plus C. septicum (2 cases or 7%), C. chauvoei plus Clostridium sordellii (1 case or 3%), C. chauvoei plus Clostridium novyi type A (1 case or 3%). This is the first diagnosis of C. novyi type A in Brazil. The findings of the higher occurrence of C. chauvoei and C. septicum concur with previous works in Brazil. This article also includes the first report in Brazil of the occurrence of C. chauvoei associated with a lesion in the myocardium. Thus, this study supplies important data about the occurrence of the agents responsible for clostridial myonecrosis in different states of Brazil, these data being important for decisions relative to control of these diseases.

Descreve-se a aplicabilidade de uma técnica de imunofluorescência direta, para o diagnóstico de mionecroses causadas por clostrídios, a partir de tecidos fixados em formol e incluídos em parafina. Essa técnica pode auxiliar no diagnóstico do carbúnculo sintomático e da gangrena gasosa, contribuindo para determinar a real prevalência dessas doenças no país
