Introduction: Rubber dam isolation is a mandatory procedure in dental treatment, especially in Endodontics. However, some professionals still refuse to employ it. Aim: This study interviewed dental professionals, dental students and patients, evaluating the perception of each group concerning the efficacy and safety of rubber dam by the percentage of responses to the questions. Methods: The questionnaires were responded by 50 students of the last year of Dentistry course at Unipar, 50 dental professionals and 100 patients from private clinics and the dental clinic of Unipar, at the city of Umuarama in Paraná. After collection of all submitted questionnaires, the responses were tabulated and analyzed. Results: 66% of dental professionals and 74% of dental students interviewed reported that they always use rubber dam isolation, mentioning as negative aspects for not using it the time required for placement, patient refusal and lack of training. Among the patients, 52% from private clinics and 54% from the dental clinic of Unipar considered the rubber dam uncomfortable, yet only 6% and 10%, respectively, indicated they would not like to use the rubber dam on the following session. Conclusions: Rubber dam isolation has great acceptance by professionals, students and patients. A significant part of dental professionals and students have been using the rubber dam routinely in the endodontic practice. The patients consider the rubber dam uncomfortable, notwithstanding they prefer to use it during dental treatment (AU).

Introduction: an educative program will be considered to have a good quality if it achieves the planned goals and objectives; if it has valuable and useful contents which respond to the necessary requirements to train the student comprehensively. Objective: to characterize some variables concerning the quality of the syllabus of the postgraduate course "Technical English for Dental Professionals" Methods: a cross sectional and descriptive study was conducted in the Dental Faculty of Havana in the second semester of the academic year 2016-2017. The following variables were analyzed: pertinence and social impact of the syllabus, syllabus of the course, academic tradition of the institution where the course was taught, work and academic background of the teachers that taught the course and the material and administrative backup for the syllabus. Results: the studied variables were evaluated as good, although there are difficulties with the scientific and research production of the English teachers that taught the course. Thirty-three of the forty-five of the participants of the course evaluated the physical conditions of the classrooms and the access to technology between 8 and 9 (73,3 percent) and 12 of them between 6 and 7 (26 percent). Conclusion: the variables studied show the quality of the syllabus of the postgraduate course "Technical English for Dental Professionals". Nevertheless, the need for air conditioning of the classrooms and the improvement of the timetable are evident. At the same time there are differences in the work and academic background of the teachers who taught the course(AU)

RESUMO

Objective: The key factor for potency of the teeth is their muscular strength. The dominant hand plays an important role in most of the daily muscular activities involving dental procedure. There are many factors, which may affect the grip strength, and very few studies especially in India have shown their correlation with grip strength. Work related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD) are an important occupational health problem affecting dental practitioners. This study assessed the prevalence of WRMSD in dental interns in relation to the thumb length and hand grip strength. Material and Methods: Thumb length template, jammer dynamometer, nine-hole peg board, and RULA assessment. Methods: Thumb length was measured by thumb length template. Grip strength was measured by jammer dynamometer, unilateral hand finger dexterity was measured by ninehole pegboard, and work related musculoskeletal disorder was assessed by RULA. Results: Thumb length was positively correlated with grip strength and work related musculoskeletal disorder. Thumb length was negatively correlated with unilateral hand finger dexterity among dental professionals. Conclusion: Thumb length is a better predictor for measuring hand grip strength and work related musculoskeletal disorder, than unilateral hand finger dexterity.

Introduction: Tobacco dependence is classified as a disease by the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), but, medical and dental professionals have neither seriously taken this fact nor made any serious attempt to tackle this disease. Apart from supporting wider tobacco control measures, oral health professionals can help patients to stop using tobacco. This may be the single most important service dentists can provide for their patients’ overall health. Objective:This review is prepared with the object to help both clinicians and oral health professionals to scale up their involvement in tobacco control activities, including advocacy and smoking cessation programs. Literature review:Studies have shown that 70% smokers indicate that they want to quit, but a meagre 2% succeed. The dental practice setting provides a unique opportunity to assist tobacco users in achieving tobacco abstinence. Still, More than 40% of dentists do not routinely ask about tobacco use and 60% do not routinely advise tobacco users to quit, while 61.5% of dentists believe their patients do not expect tobacco cessation services. Conclusion: Interventions by dentist has been found to be effective in helping people to quit tobacco consumption. A step-wise approach and patience must be adopted while dealing with such patients.
