RESUMO

Objective To determine bimatoprost, tafluprost ethyl amide, latanoprost, travoprost and tafluprost in eyelash enhancing cosmetics by establishing a LC-MS/MS method. Methods The samples were extracted with a 50% acetonitrile water solution. A salt mixture(4 g NaCl, 1 g MgSO4) was added to the solution to induce phase separation. After centrifugation and filtration, the analysis of five prostaglandin analogs was performed with an Agilent Poroshell 120 PFP-C18 (2.7 μm, 2.1 mm×100 mm) column, using 0.02% formic acid containing 5 mmol·L-1 Acetic acid amine and acetonitrile by gradient elution at a flow rate of 0.5 mL·min-1. The analytes were detected with electrospray ionization source in positive ion mode (ESI+) and multiple reaction monitoring (MRM), and quantified by external standard curve. Results The results showed that it had a good linearity in the range of locatable ambit of concentration with correlation coefficients (r) larger than 0.999. The detection limit of five prostaglandin analogs (LOD) was 0.000 2‒1.5 μg·g-1. The spiked recoveries were 93.2% to 103.5% with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 1.2% to 3.4%. Conclusion The method is simple, rapid and highly sensitive. It is suitable for the determination of five prostaglandin analogs in eyelash enhancing cosmetics.

RESUMO

@#AIM: To study the infection of Demodex folliculorum and the efficacy of tea tree essenial oil combined with fluorometholone for elderly patients with meibomian gland dysfunction(MGD).<p>METHODS: In this retrospective clinical control study, a total of 59 elderly patients(118 eyes)with MGD were included in Ningbo Eye Hospital during September 2017 to March 2018. Symptoms score, Demodex number, Tarsal gland morphology, tear break-up time(BUT), Fluorescein staining(FL)and Schirmer test(SIaT)were evaluated in 38 patients(76 eyes)with positive eyelash examination. The patients were divided into three groups and treated with different methods after blepharoplasty-Groups A(24 eyes), B(26 eyes)and C(26 eyes)were treated with 0.02% fluorometholone eye drops; tea tree essential oil wipes; and 0.02% fluorometholone eye drops combined with tea tree essential oil wipes, respectively. The follow-up was 4wk.<p>RESULTS: The eyelash Demodex was detected in 76 eyes(64.4%). The scores of subjective symptoms in the three groups were improved after treatment(<i>P</i><0.05). There was no statistical difference in the number of Demodex before and after treatment in group A(<i>P</i>=0.11); there were statistical differences in groups B and C(<i>P</i><0.01). There was no significant difference between group A(<i>P</i>=0.22), groups B and C had significant difference(<i>P</i><0.05)in BUT before and after treatment. BUT in group C was longer than that in groups A and B, and the difference was statistically significant(<i>P</i><0.05)after treatment. FL scores of the three groups before and after treatment were significantly different(<i>P</i><0.05).<p>CONCLUSION: The infection rate of Demodex mites in eyelashes of elderly patients with MGD is higher. Tea tree essential oil wipes combined with 0.02% fluorometholone eye drops can effectively repel mites, improvement of lipid secretion by meibomian gland, and relieve local symptoms of MGD.

RESUMO

AIM: To compare the clinical results of suture method and partial eyelash resection treating for pediatric eyelid trichiasis, and screen an effective method for the treatment of pediatric lower eyelid trichiasis. METHODS: Fifty-six cases of pediatric patients with lower eyelid trichiasis were randomly divided into a control group and an observation group in accordance with the method of drawing lots, and each group was 28 cases. The control group was treated with suture method, and the observation group was treated with partial eyelash resection. The clinical efficacy, patient satisfaction before and after treatment, and the incidence of complications were compared. RESULTS:(1) The clinically total effective rate was 74%of the control group, which was 89% of the observation group, and there were statistical differences of the clinical efficacy between the two groups ( P CONCLUSION: The treatment of children with lower eyelid trichiasis, suture method is simple and can be performed under local anesthesia in collaboration with children, but with a higher relapse rate, some patients required reoperation;partial resection of eyelashes can be more thoroughly solve the problem of pediatric eyelid trichiasis with low recurrence rate, but children need to be under general anesthesia with some of big risk. So partial resection of eyelashes is unsuitable for using in clinical practice widely and can be used in special cases.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of mitomycin C (MMC) on eyelash regrowth in rats. METHODS: Ten rats were subjected to bilateral eyelid epilation. One drop of 0.04% MMC solution and one drop of normal saline was then administered to the right and left eyelid, respectively. Three months post-epliation, the number of regrown eyelashes was counted, and a section of tissue from each eyelid was examined under light- and electron microscopies. RESULTS: The number of regrown long eyelashes was 1.0 +/- 0.81 on the right, and 12.5 +/- 1.08 on the left. The rate of regrowth was 7.35 +/- 5.55% on the right and 98.45 +/- 3.27% on the left. Histological examination revealed no significant differences between the right and left eyelids, except for the absence of any hair shafts in the follicles on the right. However, electron microscopy revealed mitochondrial damage in the follicles of the right eyelid. These changes were not observed in tissue from the left eyelid. CONCLUSIONS: The application of 0.04% MMC inhibited the regrowth of normal eyelashes in rats following simple epilation. These results suggest that MMC may be a novel therapy for replacing invasive surgery in trichiasis with no malpositioning.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To report a case of lacrimal gland stone initiated by an eyelash. CASE SUMMARY: A 31-year-old woman presented with foreign body sensation, pain, and conjunctival injection in the lateral palpebral conjunctiva of her right eye over 6 months in duration. The physical examination revealed a small, firm nodule at the lateral canthal area. The excisional biopsy was performed, and the mass was a concretion that contained an eyelash in the center. During one-year follow-up, the patient showed no signs of recurrence or complication after excision. CONCLUSIONS: Although rare in occurence, eyelashes may be the initial nidus for lacrimal gland stone formation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Eyelash ptosis(ELP) is a common finding in patients with long-standing leprosy. However, it has rarely been reported in the literature previously, because it has been diagnosed as trichiasis or entropion. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of ELP in Hansen's disease. METHODS: We took both frontal and lateral photographs of eyes in 20 patients and evaluated the degree of ptosis using a 4-point rating scale, in which 0 indicates no ptosis; 1, minimal; 2, moderate; and 3, severe. The evaluation was also performed in 20 normal persons as control group. RESULTS: All patients demonstrated ELP. In general, severity of ptosis in patient group is greater than that in control group. While the mean eyelash ptosis rating was 2.0+/-0.6 in the latter, it was 0.6+/-0.4 in the former, which is statistically significant (p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: ELP is common in the patients with Hansen's disease and moderate to severe forms occurred more commonly in disease group compared with control group. ELP must be considered as a characteristic ocular finding in long-standing leprosy.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the surgical results of an ear cartilage graft and supplemental procedures for correcting lower lid retraction combined with entropion in anophthalmic patients. METHODS: We reviewed retrospectively the medical records of 7 anophthalmic patients with lower lid retraction and entropion, who received a posterior lamellar ear cartilage graft and one or both of lateral tarsal strip or eyelash-everting procedure between March 1998 and March 2003. Preoperative and postoperative lid and socket statuses were also investigated. RESULTS: Ear cartilage grafts were performed in all 7 patients, lateral tarsal strips in 6, and eyelash-everting procedures in 5. Postoperative follow-up durations ranged from 4 to 28 months (average 12.6 months). Retractions were corrected during follow-up in all patients. There were no cases of entropion immediately after surgery. However, the eyelashes of the lower lid returned to an upright position in 4 patients, but not so severe as to touch the ocular prosthesis, and thus did not require surgical correction during follow up. CONCLUSIONS: Lower lid retraction combined with entropion in anophthalmic patients can be corrected effectively using an ear cartilage graft with selective, supplemental procedures.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Arm withdrawal movements are often observed on the administration of rocuronium. This study used the BIS to predict the depth of sedation and the prevention of withdrawal movements. METHODS: With the approval of the institutional review board and the informed consent of the subjects, sixty patients, with ASA physical stati of 1 to 2, were randomized into four groups. After the induction of anesthesia using 0.5 mg/kg of thiopental sodium, each group received 0.6 mg/kg of rocuronium when their BIS values were 85 (Group I), 75 (Group II), 65 (Group III), or 55 (Group IV). The blood pressure, heart rate, BIS value at the time of loss of eyelash reflex, incidence of withdrawal movement and grade, and the correlation between the BIS value and loss of eyelash reflex were observed. RESULTS: No difference were observed in the incidence of withdrawal movement and grade between the four groups. The correlation coefficients of the BIS value and time of loss of eyelash reflex were both 0.33 (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: It may be impossible to rely solely on the BIS value to insure patients reach a deep anesthetic state after induction of anesthesia with thiopental. The withdrawal movement on injection of rocuronium can not be prevented with BIS monitoring.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We can usually see the yawning at induction of anesthesia, however, it has not been studied as such an indicator of anesthesia. The yawning is one means of changing arousal level, and a sign or marker that such a change is occurring, although its functions are not well understood. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the yawning whether it could be used as an indicator of induction of anesthesia, using its property as a marker of changed arousal level. METHODS: In 60 adult patients, group 1 was done propofol target controlled infusion (TCI) with Stelpump software, while group 2 was done thiopental TCI similarly. Clinical indicators of induction of anesthesia were measured as follows: loss of verbal control (LOV), loss of eyelash reflex (LOE), the yawning. In addition, the occurrence of apnea (OOA) were measured, too. We assessed the hypnosis levels of indicators of induction of anesthesia including the yawning and demonstrate their effect site concentrations and elapsed time. Furthermore, we compared the incidences of yawning and apnea between both groups. RESULTS: Clinical indicators of induction occurred in the order of LOV > LOE > the yawning >> OOA in both groups. With respect to BIS, the yawning showed the lowest BIS and the highest effect site concentrations except OOA in both groups. The incidence of the yawning in group 2 was higher than in group 1 (about 82 vs 63%). On the contrary, the incidence of apnea in group 1 was higher than in group 2 (about 79 vs 53%). CONCLUSIONS: As far as the yawning could be shown, we could observe, it approximated most closely to their clinical impression of the 'true' induction in terms of the hypnosis level and its effect site concentration.

RESUMO

The pubic louse, Pthirus pubis is a blood-sucking ectoparasite adapted to hold onto pubic, axillary and body hairs. It is usually confined to the pubic and inguinal region. However, it may also rarely involve the scalp and eyelashes. We report two cases of phthiriasis occurring on unusual sites, the first case occurring on the scalp of a 5 month-old male infant, and the second case on the eyelashes of a 49-year-old fe-male.
