The objective of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical behavior through fatigue resistance and finite element analysis of bilaminar bioinspired crowns with modified infrastructures on the buccal surface (Study A) and using different ceramic materials with different elastic moduli (Study B). For this, 90 preparations were made for a full crown in G10 epoxy resin, on which bioinspired crowns were prepared according to the following groups: Study A - CI (conventional infrastructure), SMI (stratified modified infrastructure) and CMI (cemented modified infrastructure ), all made of lithium disilicate (infrastructure) + porcelain (veneer); Study B LD+LEU (lithium disilicate + leucite), LEU+LD (leucite + lithium disilicate), HC+LD (hybrid ceramic + lithium disilicate) and HC+LEU (hybrid ceramic + leucite). For Study A, all infrastructures were machined; the coverings of the CI and SMI groups were made through stratification technique, and the veneers of the SMI group were machined. For Study B, all pieces were machined, according to the ceramic material of each group. Then, the veneers were cemented into their infrastructures (depending on the group) and crowns were cemented into preparations using light-cured resin cement (Variolink Esthetic LC). After cementing, the specimens were subjected to the cyclic fatigue test (10,000 cycles, 20Hz), and as an outcome two events were considered: the occurrence of cracking and/or chipping (event 1) and catastrophic failure (event 2). The load (N) and number of cycles to failure in which events 1 and 2 were observed were used to perform the survival analysis according to Kaplan-Meier and Log-Rank (Mantel- Cox; 95%). The fracture marks and failure mode of the crowns were evaluated and classified by optical stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope. Finally, finite element analysis (FEA) was performed for both studies in order to evaluate the stress distribution over the crowns and adhesive interface. For Study A, the results of the fatigue test showed that, considering event 1 (cracking/chipping), the CI and CMI groups presented average to failure that were statistically significant compared to each other (733.33 N and 913.33 N, respectively), while the SMI group showed higher averages (1,020 N). Same pattern was observed for the number of cycles under fatigue for both groups. When considering event 2 (catastrophic failure), the three groups presented statistically similar means (~1,028 N). The FEA results showed that the CI group concentrated greater tensile stress than the CMI and SMI groups. For Study B, in the fatigue test, the LC+LEU group presented the highest average fatigue resistance (event 1: 913.33 N and event 2: 1033.33 N), while all other combinations of ceramic materials analyzed were statistically similar to each other, considering load and number of cycles. Regarding FEA, the groups with hybrid ceramics (HC+LC and HC+LEU) showed lower stress concentration peaks in the infrastructure than the groups with glass ceramics (LC+LEU and LEU+LC), however, on the other hand, concentrated greater tension at the adhesive interface. With this, it is concluded that the use of modified infrastructure is a viable and promising alternative for oral rehabilitation treatments, presenting satisfactory fatigue survival and adequate stress distribution. Furthermore, the combination of a lithium disilicate infrastructure and a leucite-based ceramic coating corresponds to the best approach considering the modified infrastructure.(AU)

Nurses who work in hospital care deal with physical and emotional pain, highly complex situations, exposure to suffering, fear, stress and anxiety, which favors the development of compassion fatigue, which is considered a form of suffering resulting from work activity. and can compromise the health and well-being of nurses, as well as patient safety. The objective was to relate compassion fatigue with aspects of the quality of healthcare and patient safety. This was an exploratory, quantitative, correlational study, carried out between May and June 2021. Data collection took place through an online questionnaire after approval from the Research Ethics Committee and consent from the participants. The sample consisted of 410 nurses who worked in three private hospitals in São Paulo; 319 (78%) were female, 212 (51.71%) had worked in hospitals for 4 to 10 years. Positive correlations were obtained between high rates in the compassion fatigue and burnout dimension of the ProQol-Br questionnaire and aspects related to quality of care and patient safety (p<0.001). The nurses agreed that due to work overload and mental exhaustion, they failed to fully comply with quality and patient safety protocols, which could increase the occurrence of adverse events. The relevance of developing strategies to improve work overload was highlighted, through the adequacy of human resources, satisfaction and professional recognition, in order to minimize the occurrence of compassion fatigue and have a positive impact on the quality of care and patient safety.

RESUMO

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between upper limb kinetics and perceived fatigability in elderly individuals during an upper limb position sustained isometric task. METHODS: A total of 31 elderly participants, 16 men (72.94±4.49 years) and 15 women (72.27±6.05 years), performed a upper limb position sustained isometric task. Upper-limb acceleration was measured using an inertial measurement unit. Perceived fatigability was measured using the Borg CR10 scale. RESULTS: Higher mean acceleration in the x-axis throughout the activity was associated with higher final perceived fatigability scores. Moderate correlations were observed between perceived fatigability variation and mean acceleration cutoffs in all axes during the second half of the activity. In women, significant correlations were found between all perceived fatigability cutoffs and mean acceleration in the y- and x-axes. However, in men, the relationships between perceived fatigability variation and mean acceleration were more extensive and stronger. CONCLUSION: The acceleration pattern of the upper limb is linked to perceived fatigability scores and variation, with differences between sexes. Monitoring upper limb acceleration using a single inertial measurement unit can be a useful and straightforward method for identifying individuals who may be at risk of experiencing high perceived fatigability or task failure.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) often require hospital admission and experience sequelae such as chronic fatigue or low muscle mass. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the functional capacity of a cohort of patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 who required hospitalization. DESIGN AND SETTING: An observational descriptive study was conducted on post-COVID-19 patients referred to the Rehabilitation Department of Gregorio Marañón Hospital (Madrid, SPAIN). METHODS: Cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, body composition, and perception of fatigue and dyspnea were analyzed. Furthermore, the existing correlations between clinical variables and physical conditions were analyzed. RESULTS: Forty-two patients who required hospital admission (80 ± 22.45 days) or intensive care unit (ICU) admission (58 ± 10.52 days) were analyzed. They presented with decreased strength, respiratory capacity, and moderate-to-severe perceived fatigue. Additionally, an inverse correlation was found between right-handgrip strength and days in the ICU, as well as the 6-minute walk test for women. Similarly, strength and fitness were negatively associated with perceived fatigue. CONCLUSIONS: Post-COVID-19 patients showed low muscle function and low levels of physical fitness associated with high perceived fatigue.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objective: To study the temporal changes of autophagy related factors in skeletal muscle of rats after exhaustive exercise and blunt trauma. Methods: Forty-two male SD rats were divided into 7 groups with 6 rats in each group: Quiet control group (C), immediately after exhaustive exercise (E0), 24 hours after exhaustive exercise (E24), 48 hours after exhaustive exercise (E48), immediately after blunt trauma (D0), 24 hours after blunt trauma (D24), 48 hours after blunt trauma (D48). All groups of rats were killed and samped respectively at different time points specified above, and the right gastrocnemius muscle was taken, which was divided into two parts, one for mRNAs of, Lamp-2, BNIP3 and NIX by real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR, and the other for p62 protein by Western blotting. Results: (1) Compared with group C, mRNA levels of p62, Lamp-2 and NIX in group E48 were significantly increased after exhaustive exercise(P<0.05), suggesting that autophagy increased in 48h after exhaustive exercise. (2) Compared with group C, p62mRNA and Lamp-2 mRNA levels were significantly increased immediately after blunt trauma(P<0.05) and decreased significantly in 48h after blunt trauma(P<0.05), suggesting that autophagy activity was enhanced immediately after blunt trauma and decreased in 48h after injury. Conclusions: Generally, there were differences at each recovery phase between blunt trauma and exhausted exercise models, and the basal autophagy factors and mitochondrial autophagy factors were also inconsistent. Basal autophagy factors p62 and Lamp-2 increased significantly 48 hours after eccentric exhaustive exercise and immediately after blunt trauma. Mitochondrial autophagy factor BNIP3 did not increase after exhaustive exercise and blunt trauma, but NIX only increased after exhaustive exercise. Its molecular mechanism needs to be further studied. Level of Evidence III; Therapeutic Studies Investigating the Results of Treatment.

Background: Professional nurses who study part-time are faced with demanding tasks, demanding routine, having to cope with their studies and family commitments. Some nurses try different tactics to cope with their demanding tasks, such as the consumption of energy drinks, to alleviate tiredness and fatigue. Although these energy drinks can alleviate fatigue and boost their energy levels, they have adverse effects to their health such as migraines, insomnia, seizures, arrhythmias and other cardiovascular complications. Aim: To determine the health effects of energy drinks among nurses studying part-time. Setting: Selected university in the Gauteng province, South Africa. Methods: Descriptive, quantitative method that was contextual in nature was used. Self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from a conveniently sampled population to determine the health effects of the use of energy drinks. Data analysis were done by means of descriptive statistics using the Statistical package for Social Sciences version 26. Results: Findings indicated that nurses studying part-time experience fatigue (n = 86; 49%). To alleviate fatigue (n = 91; 52%), they use energy drinks. Conclusion: Use of energy drinks is prevalent among the nurses because of fatigue caused by studying while working. To reduce the use of energy drinks, the participants need study leave and to be supported by their families and employers. Contribution: The study encourages reduction or prevent the use of energy drinks by nurses who work and study part-time. Participants must use time management as a coping mechanism.

RESUMO

ObjectiveTo study the effects of Epimedii Folium polysaccharides on mice with exercise-induced fatigue and explore its possible mechanism of action. MethodICR male mice screened by swimming training were randomly divided into a control group, model group, vitamin C group, and low, medium, and high dose groups of Epimedii Folium polysaccharides, with eight mice in each group. The exercise-induced fatigue model was established by weight-bearing swimming training in each group except for the control group. After two weeks of weight-bearing swimming, the Epimedii Folium polysaccharide groups were given 100, 200, 400 mg∙kg-1 of Epimedii Folium polysaccharides by gavage, and the vitamin C group was given 200 mg∙kg-1 of vitamin C by gavage. The control group and the model group were given equal amounts of saline for 14 d. At the end of the experimental period, the body mass of the mice in each group and the time of last swimming due to exhaustion were recorded. Serum urea nitrogen (BUN), lactic acid (LA), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidation (GSH-Px), myoglycogen (MG) in skeletal muscle, hepatic glycogen (HG) in the liver were detected by kits. Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining was used to observe the pathological changes in muscle tissue. Western blot was used to detect the protein expression of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK), phosphorylation (p)-p38 MAPK, extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2), nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), p-NF-κB, interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in muscle tissue. The immunofluorescence (IF) method was used to detect the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in skeletal muscle tissue of mice in each group. ResultCompared with the control group, the body mass of mice in the model group decreased, and the time of last swimming due to exhaustion decreased (P<0.01). In addition, there were significantly higher serum levels of the fatigue metabolites LA, LDH, BUN, and lipid peroxidation product MDA (P<0.01) and decreased levels of MG, HG, SOD, and GSH-Px (P<0.01). The protein expressions of p-p38 MAPK, ERK1/2, p-NF-κB, IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α in skeletal muscle tissue were significantly higher than those of the control group (P<0.01). Compared with the model group, the body mass and time of last swimming due to exhaustion of the mice in the low, medium, and high dose groups of Epimedii Folium polysaccharides and the vitamin C group were increased (P<0.05, P<0.01), and the contents of LA, LDH, BUN, and MDA were significantly decreased (P<0.05, P<0.01). The levels of MG, HG, SOD, and GSH-Px increased (P<0.05, P<0.01), and the protein expression levels of p-p38 MAPK, ERK, p-NF-κB, IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α in skeletal muscle tissue decreased (P<0.05, P<0.01). ConclusionEpimedii Folium polysaccharides can play a role in alleviating exercise-induced fatigue by inhibiting the p38 MARK/NF-κB signaling pathway, thereby reducing the accumulation of metabolites, improving the activity of antioxidant enzymes, increasing the glycogen content of the body, and reducing inflammation in skeletal muscle.

RESUMO

Objective@#To explore the effects of happy physical education based on constructivism on physical education learning burnout, body shape and mental health of college students, so as to provide a reference for the reform of physical education teaching in universities.@*Methods@#By using cluster sampling method, students from two teaching classes of the 2022 physical badminton elective course were enrolled as the research objects at Shanghai Institute of Commerce and Foreign Languages from September to December 2022. They were randomly divided into experimental group ( n =38) and control group ( n =40) by drawing lots. The control group received routine physical education teaching for 16 weeks, with 2 class hours weekly and 45 minutes per class hour. While the experimental group was given happy physical education based on constructivism, with a teaching process of building a framework, independent exploration, collaborative learning, and effect evaluation. The idea was to integrate Happy Sports into badminton technology and tactical training courses, emphasizing the fun of sports activities, and drawing on various forms of sports games when designing sports activities. RESUMO

Background The mental health status of prison officers is crucial to the efficiency, security, and stability of a prison, and it is essential to pay attention to the factors that influence their mental health. Objective To understand the mental health status of prison officers, and analyze how nature exposure affects their mental health problems and a potential mediating role of mental fatigue. Methods A cross-sectional survey was carried out from May to June 2022 among 1392 prison officers from eight prisons in a province, and a total of 1284 valid questionnaires were recovered. The Nature Exposure Scale, Mental Fatigue Scale, and Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale were used to assess nature exposure, mental fatigue, and mental health indicators among prison officers, and to explore the effect of nature exposure on mental health problems and a potential mediating role of mental fatigue. Results The recruited prison officers showed high levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. The prevalence rates of depression, anxiety, and stress were 59.11% (759/1284), 60.67% (779/1284),and 43.93% (564/1284), respectively. The results of correlation analysis revealed that nature exposure was negatively related with mental fatigue and mental health indicators (depression, anxiety, and stress) (rs=−0.242, −0.308, −0.235, −0.254, P<0.01), while mental fatigue was positively correlated with mental health indicators (depression, anxiety, and stress) (rs=0.546, 0.533, 0.536, P<0.01). The PROCESS macro results showed that the level of nature exposure among prison officers negatively associated with depression, anxiety, and stress (β=−0.180, −0.104, −0.123), and mental fatigue played a mediating role, with indirect effects of −0.200, −0.192, and −0.199, respectively. Conclusion The levels of depression, anxiety, and stress of prison officers are higher than those of other occupations. Nature exposure negatively associates with depression, anxiety, and stress, that is, it may directly alleviate the mental health problems of prison officers; and it may also alleviate mental health problems by relieving mental fatigue.

RESUMO

ObjectiveTo investigate the clinical efficacy of Huangqi injection combined with Buzhong Yiqi acupuncture in the treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) with Qi deficiency and its effects on TCM syndromes, fatigue symptoms, serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) levels. MethodA total of 200 patients with CFS of Qi deficiency were randomly divided into a control group (100 cases) and an observation group (100 cases). The control group was treated with vitamin B compounds, and the observation group was treated with Huangqi injection combined with Buzhong Yiqi acupuncture for two weeks. The scores of TCM syndromes, fatigue symptoms, levels of serum SOD, MDA, and ox-LDL and the incidence of adverse reactions were observed and compared before and after treatment in two groups. ResultAfter treatment, the total effective rate of the control group was 54.34% (50/92), while that of the observation group was 88.54% (85/96). The total effective rate of the observation group was higher than that of the control group (χ2=27.13,P<0.05). Compared with those in the two groups before treatment, scores of fatigue self-assessment scale (FSAS), physical fatigue and mental fatigue, and sleep/rest response scores of fatigue in the two groups after treatment were significantly decreased (P<0.05). After treatment, scores of FSAS, physical fatigue and mental fatigue, and sleep/rest response scores of fatigue in the observation group were significantly decreased compared with those in the control group (P<0.05). Compared with those in the two groups before treatment, TCM syndrome scores in the two groups after treatment were significantly decreased (P<0.05). After treatment, TCM syndrome scores in the observation group were significantly decreased compared with those in the control group (P<0.05). Compared with those in the two groups before treatment, MDA levels in the two groups were significantly decreased (P<0.05), ox-LDL levels in the observation group were significantly decreased (P<0.05), and SOD levels were significantly increased (P<0.05). After treatment, compared with those in the control group, the serum MDA and ox-LDL levels in the observation group were significantly decreased (P<0.05), and the serum SOD was significantly increased (P<0.05). No serious adverse events or adverse reactions occurred during this clinical trial. ConclusionHuangqi injection combined with Buzhong Yiqi acupuncture has a good clinical curative effect in the treatment of CFS with Qi deficiency, which can effectively improve the fatigue symptoms of patients, increase the level of SOD, and reduce the level of serum MDA and ox-LDL. It is related to the production of antioxidants, inhibiting the production of lipid peroxides, and improving the body's ability to resist oxidative stress.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE@#This study aimed to investigate the effect and underlying mechanism of Fructus lycii in improving exercise fatigue.@*METHODS@#A network pharmacological approach was used to explore potential mechanisms of action of Fructus lycii. Skeletal muscle C2C12 cells and immunofluorescence were employed to verify the effect and mechanism of the representative components in Fructus lycii predicted by network pharmacological analysis.@*RESULTS@#Six potential active components, namely quercetin, β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, 7-O-methylluteolin-6-C-beta-glucoside_qt, atropine, and glycitein, were identified to have potency in improving exercise fatigue via multiple pathways, such as the PI3K-Akt, neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, IL-17, TNF, and MAPK signaling pathways. The immunofluorescence results indicated that quercetin, a significant active component in Fructus lycii, increased the mean staining area of 2-NBDG, TMRM, and MitoTracker, and decreased the area of CellRox compared to the control. Furthermore, the protein expression levels of p-38 MAPK, p-MAPK, p-JNK, p-PI3K, and p-AKT markedly increased after quercetin treatment.@*CONCLUSION@#Fructus lycii might alleviate exercise fatigue through multiple components and pathways. Among these, quercetin appears to improve exercise fatigue by enhancing energy metabolism and reducing oxidative stress. The PI3K-AKT and MAPK signaling pathways also appear to play a role in this process.

RESUMO

Patients with cancer-related fatigue are prone to symptoms and signs such as anorexia, weight loss, and abdominal distension, which seriously reduces the quality of life and becomes an independent risk factor affecting the survival rate of patients with malignant tumors. Therefore, it is urgent to find effective treatment strategies and drugs. In the past, the academic viewpoint of improving syndromes—a new strategy for tumor treatment was proposed based on the guidance of the Luobing theory. Based on this, this article proposes the pathogenesis of cancer-related fatigue is characterized by spleen and kidney deficiency, stasis and toxin internal obstruction, as well as the treatment method of strengthening the spleen and tonifying the kidney, resolving blood stasis and detoxification guided by the core theory of the Qiluo doctrine of Chengzhi Tiaoping. The representative drug Yangzheng Xiaoji capsules has been developed, not only has good therapeutic effect on solid tumors, but also shows good advantages in treating cancer-related fatigue, which can help to restore the homeostasis of tumor bearing survival in patients with malignant tumors and provide new drug choices for the clinical treatment of cancer-related fatigue.

Introduction: Physical exercise can generate reactive oxygen species that damage essential cellular components, such as fatigue. Flavonoids, due to their low toxicity and antioxidant activity, have been studied as potential dietary supplements to improve sports performance. Objective: To describe the scientific evidence that has been obtained on the efficacy of the use of flavonoids as supplements to improve sports physical performance. Methods: A search was carried out, in PubMed and Google Scholar databases, on the efficacy of the use of flavonoids as supplements for physical and sports performance. The keywords were used flavonoid, supplementation, sport, exercise, fatigue, muscle, fats, physical activity. Articles published from 2018 to 2022, in English, that met the selection criteria were taken into account. Results: Flavonoids are capable of reducing fatigue due to physical exertion in a sports context, mainly due to their ability to regulate the activity of endogenous antioxidant agents such as superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase enzymes, which are responsible for the neutralization of reactive oxygen species. In addition, they are capable of favoring the neutralization of toxic metabolites that are generated during exercise and of increasing energy reserves (glycogen in the liver and muscles) and muscular resistance. Conclusions: There is scientific evidence that flavonoids are capable of improving sports physical performance, mainly by reducing fatigue and increasing muscular resistance.

RESUMO

Abstract Reduced sleep duration, poor sleep quality and fatigue are related to reduced immunity and increased inflammatory markers. Due to its potential to influence inflammation, poor sleep quality and fatigue could be factors for periodontitis and quality of life. Ninety-three individuals with untreated periodontitis and thirty-one individuals with healthy gingiva were included in the study. The research involved a clinical examination and a questionnaire. Demographic information, information on oral health, oral hygiene habits, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Jenkins Sleep Scale, Multidimensional Assessment of Fatigue Scale, and Oral Health Impact Profile-14 were included in the questionnaire. Patients were diagnosed based on the 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions. No statistically significant difference was revealed between sleep quality, fatigue, oral health related quality of life, and stage-grade of periodontitis (p<0.05). However, periodontitis group had higher Oral Health Impact Profile-14 scores (p<0.05). A statistically significantly lower sleep duration was observed in stage IV periodontitis group than the other groups (p<0.05). A statistically significant positive correlation was observed between the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the scores of the other questionnaires (p<0.05). The stage of periodontitis may impact sleep duration.
