RESUMO

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: The identification and understanding of dietary factors and other characteristics that influence gestational weight gain can contribute to the formulation of strategies to promote healthy eating habits before and during pregnancy. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between dietary patterns, sociodemographic and obstetric characteristics, and health-related behaviors in pregnant women. DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional study was conducted on women undergoing prenatal care in the Unified Health System of Colombo, Paraná, Brazil, from February 2018 to September 2019. METHOD: A weekly food frequency questionnaire was administered, and dietary patterns were identified through factor analysis. Median regression models were constructed to identify the associations between dietary pattern scores and variables. RESULTS: Complete data were obtained from 495 pregnant women. Three dietary patterns were identified: 1) "healthy," with higher factor loadings for the weekly consumption of raw vegetables, cooked vegetables, and fresh fruits; 2) "Western," including soft drinks or artificial juice, candies, milk, and dairy products, and processed cold meat; and 3) "traditional," beans and meat. Pregnant women aged 30 years or older (coefficient [Coef.] 0.86, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.38-1.33) with moderate/intense physical activity (Coef. 0.32, 95% CI 0.02-0.62) had higher adherence to the "healthy" pattern. Adolescents and smokers adhered more to the "traditional" pattern (Coef. 0.17, 95% CI 0.01-0.33). CONCLUSION: Age, smoking status, and physical activity were associated with dietary patterns in pregnant women.

RESUMO

Dietary patterns (DPs) are conditioned by a large number of factors, including physical activity and sedentary lifestyle, however, there is limited information on their interaction. This study aimed to identify DPs and their associations with physical activity and sedentary behavior among university students from Mexico. We conducted a cross-sectional, observational and analytical study. The participants were university students from Southwest Mexico. A total of 419 participants who did not suffer from any disease that affects oral nutrition or that prevented them from performing physical activity were included. DPs were generated from a principal component analysis and associations were analyzed using a logistic regression model. Three DPs were identified: "western", "prudent" and "traditional". The traditional pattern was significantly associated with high physical activity (OR: 2.78; 95% CI: 1.34-5.75) and was a protective factor against sedentary lifestyle (OR: 0.35; 95% CI: 0.13-0.93). The results show that a high physical activity and a lower sedentary lifestyle were associated with a healthier dietary pattern in the study population. It is important to implement interventions towards nutrition, physical activity and sedentary behavior for the population being studied.

Objective: to identify the eating patterns of the adult population from Antioquia, Colombia, and their association with socioeconomic variables. Methods: a cross-sectional study was performed with a random sample of 1,394 adults aged 18 to 59 years, derived from the Antioquia Food and Nutritional Profile 2019 study. Food consumption was evaluated with a 24-hour consumption recall (R24h) and a second R24h on a non-consecutive day at 25% of the sample, food consumption was quantified in grams, and food patterns were established by factorial analysis by Principal Components with varimax orthogonal rotation. To verify the association between eating patterns and socioeconomic variables, Poisson regression was used for robust variance. Results: three eating patterns were defined that represent 28.1% of the variance: "Traditional" (9.8%), "Regional" (9.7%), and "Prudent" (8.6%). The first two were associated with demographic variables, such as gender, age, and ethnicity; while the latter was associated with socioeconomic variables such as schooling, family income, social security system, and food security classification. Conclusions: The findings of this study show that the diet of the population of the study, follows some references to food tradition, reflected in the Traditional and Regional patterns, while the Prudent pattern corresponds to the part of the population that has better socioeconomic conditions, and they probably follow it for health recommendation.

RESUMO

@#Introduction: Poor feeding patterns increase risk of Early Childhood Caries (ECC), which can cause negative impacts on oral health-related quality of life (OHQoL) of preschool children and parents. This study aims to assess feeding patterns of preschool children and OHQoL of the children and their parents in Tanah Merah. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 134 preschool children aged 5-6 years old from eight private preschools, chosen by multi-staged stratified cluster sampling. Parents answered adopted self-administered questionnaire on feeding patterns and oral health-related impacts. Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to compare the median between groups of feeding patterns. Results: A total of 122 parents responded. Majority of the children had history of bottle-feeding (97.5%) and being given solid food during infancy (61.2%). Many children were still using bottle to drink (38.5%). Majority were still given formula milk at least three times daily (51.1%) and were feed with bottle to put to sleep (97.9%). The Child Impact Section (CIS), Family Impact Section (FIS) and Overall ECOHIS mean scores were 2.39 (SD=3.41), 0.71 (SD=1.45) and 3.10 (SD=4.41), respectively. Most common impact reported in CIS was ‘oral pain’ (26.2%) whereas in FIS, ‘parents felt guilty’ (7.4%). None of feeding patterns were found significantly different in terms of ECOHIS score median (p-value>0.05). Children OHQoL reporting by proxy should be treated as complementary. Conclusion: Many preschool children were involved in prolonged, frequent and nocturnal bottle-feeding. No significant difference in median ECOHIS scores found according to feeding patterns.

RESUMO

Objective:To explore the association between different feeding patterns, emotional states, and salivary oxytocin (OT) levels during breastfeeding. Methods:From January to December 2019, 153 pairs of 3-month-old infants and their mothers were recruited from 4 maternal and child health hospitals in Chongqing, Liuzhou, Dalian and Hangzhou in China.Saliva samples were collected from the mothers at the first 5 minutes of feeding, 5 minutes during feeding, and 10 minutes after feeding.Edinburgh postnatal depression scale (EPDS) was used to evaluate maternal depression.Infants were divided into exclusive breastfeeding group and artificial feeding group according to feeding patterns.ELISA of salivary oxytocin was performed by ELISA kits, and the OT levels measured at the 3 time points were converted using linear interpolation.Area under the curve with respect to ground(OTAUCG) was used to represent the total concentration of salivary OT during the mother's breastfeeding.SPSS 25.0 software was used for statistical analysis.Multiple linear regression analysis and two factors analysis of variance were used to explore the association between different feeding methods, emotional state and salivary oxytocin during breastfeeding. Results:The results of the two factors analysis of variance showed that the interaction between feeding pattern and mother's emotion was not significant ( F=2.440, P=0.120), the main effect of mother's emotion was not significant ( F=0.380, P=0.539), and the main effect of feeding style was significant ( F=3.350, P=0.021). The level of OTAUCG under pure breastfeeding ((151 561.47±75 738.11) pg/mL) was higher than that under artificial feeding ((122 269.03±65 029.88) pg/mL), and the difference was statistically significant ( P=0.02). There was no statistically significant difference in OTAUCG levels between mothers with normal emotions ((146 106.37±75 106.76) pg/mL) and mothers with depressed emotions ((129 079.56±67 565.87) pg/mL) ( P=0.221). Multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that artificial feeding had a negative predictive effect on maternal salivary OT levels compared to exclusive breastfeeding( β=-0.211, t=-2.513, P=0.013). Conclusion:Feeding pattern is a factor that affects the mother's salivary OT level, and breastfeeding can improve the mother's OT level.

RESUMO

The influence of pharmaceutical residues and heavy metals on living organisms has received global attention. The present study assessed the interactive effect of antibiotic residues and heavy metals in soil, as contaminated food with cadmium (Cd) and oxytetracycline (OTC) on the isopod Porcellio leavis. It was fed on fresh plant leaves contaminated with different concentrations of cadmium, Cd+OTC1000 ppm, Cd+OTC2000 ppm and Cd+OTC3000 ppm for 4 weeks. The changes in the feeding patterns, protein, lipid peroxidation (LPO), catalase activity (CAT), and total free amino acids (TFAA) were recorded. There were significant differences in the obtained results where Cd reduced the egestion ratio (ER) however, OTC enhanced this ratio. Biochemical analysis illustrated that combination between OTC and Cd inhibits the toxic effects of Cd at low concentration (1000 ppm), while at high concentration (3000 ppm) raise the toxicity. Detailed studies are required for further understanding of the interaction between OTC and heavy metals, and also its impact on soil animals and for improving soil risk evaluation.

Enteral feeding is very important to the gastrointestinal tract maturity, growth and the development of the nervous system. However,on account of the physiological distinctiveness of the very preterm infants,it may be difficult to give oral feeding directly at an early stage. Therefore, nasogastric and duodenal tubes are always needed to proceed continuous or intermittent enteral feeding, while different ways have different feature. At the present, there is no definite conclusion about which way is the best one for this kind of infants.Larger sample and uniform multi-center study will be necessary.

Eating behavior involves all actions that define the relation between human beings and food. It is accepted that feeding habits are acquired through eating experiences and practices learned from the familiar and social context in early childhood. Besides the role of the social context, it is also assumed that familiar factors, both common family environment and genetic inheritance, have an important influence on food intake and eating behavior linked with childhood obesity. Research on food intake and childhood obesity has been traditionally focused on the amount and type of foods in the usual diet. However, it is an increasing interest to understand the link between eating behavior and obesity using questionnaires. There are several psychometric tools that have been developed specifically to deal with human eating behavior. This review summarizes the family influences, both genetic and non-genetic, on childhood feeding behavior and their relation to childhood obesity.

RESUMO

In paralel with several other epidemiologic and entomologic data of 19 Municipalities of Espírito Santo State, Brazil, the feeding pattern of 222 Triatoma vitticeps is studied through precipitin tests. Very high levels of natural infection with Trypanosoma cruzi are observed in adult insects, in contrast with the abscence or minimum degrees of infection among nymphs and human individuals. The precipitin tests showed the contact of the insects with multiple blood sources, chiefly human and birds, followed by rodents and marsupials. The data suggest that T. vitticeps in spite of being highly antropophilic, become infected by T. cruzi in sylvatic ambient and occasionally invade houses. The species doesn't seem to be - at least until now - a good vector in the domestic cycle of Chagas' disease. Several factors seem to be involved in this conclusion, mainly the low density of the insect in the houses, its hardness to coloniza them, its slowness concerning to suction and defecation and possibly its low susceptibility to different T. cruzi strains.
