RESUMO

This study assessed the effect of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) and 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) to control anthracnose in papaya (cultivar Golden). Disinfested-surface fruits were inoculated with Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and then the compounds were applied. The lesion diameters and the physical-chemical properties were analyzed. Assays were carried out with ASA and 1-MCP targeting the control of anthracnose and maintenance of the fruit's physical-chemical properties. The effect of ASA (20 mM; 20 min) on reducing lesion diameter occurred when applied before inoculation. Fruits treated with 1-MCP (300ppb) for 12 h showed a smaller lesion diameter than control. For the physical-chemical analysis, fruit treated with 1-MCP (200; 300 ppb; 12h) maintained fruit firmness, delayed fruit ripening and fruit fresh weight loss.

Aims@#The objective of this study is to identify the causal agent of a new fruit rot disease on jackfruit which was observed in the jackfruit-growing area in Taman Kekal Pengeluaran Makanan (TKPM), Pahang State of Malaysia in late 2016. The disease has been continuously spreading and caused huge economic loss to jackfruit farmers in Malaysia. @*Methodology and results@#Bacterial strains isolated from the disease plant were preliminary identified using basic morphological and physiological test and confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. The isolates from infected tissue were Gram-negative and motile rods bacteria producing circular, mucoid colonies on LB medium that are 2 mm wide after 48 h at 28 °C. It appeared creamy to white in colour on NA medium with more watery consistency. The 16S rRNA was amplified for the isolated strains and sequences were compared with the NCBI database using BLAST. The results showed 97 to 99% identity similarity to Dickeya fangzhongdai, strain JS5 (accession no. KT992690). Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the isolates from this study were clustered together in the clade of D. fangzhongdai. Sequence data from isolated strains were deposited in GenBank (accession no. MH197139, MH842152 and MH842153). Characteristic symptoms of fruit rot disease appeared after 2 days of post inoculation though Koch’s postulate. @*Conclusion, significance and impact of study@#To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a new bacterial fruit rot disease of jackfruit caused by species of Dickeya in Malaysia. The bacterium is now considered as one of several bacterial causing diseases which impacted major loses of jackfruit industry in Malaysia.

RESUMO

The papaya fruit rot (Phytophthora palmivora) is responsible for significant losses. To reduce diseases, especially in areas with climate and humidity favorable to pathogens, are adopted chemical methods, which sometimes increase the cost of production and cause severe environmental impacts. Alternatively, there are products, such as, phosphites of potassium and acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM) that might be efficient on disease control and less aggressive to environment. Phosphites of K and ASM were evaluated in this study on the control effectiveness of papaya fruit rot at different dosages in preharvest and postharvest. The severity and percentage of disease control were evaluated for each treatment. For the pre-harvest treatments (applied six days before harvest), the phosphite of K [240 g L-1 K2O, 340 g L-1 P2O5 and 50 g L-1 (Reforce® + Salicylic Acid)] at 3 or 6 mL L-1significantly reduced disease severity, and, reduced fruit ripening. On postharvest application, ASM reduced disease severity.

Trichoderma strains were evaluated under field conditions to assay their efficacy in suppressing Alternaria fruit rot disease and promoting chili plant growth. The experiment was conducted at the Botanical Garden, Rajshahi University, Bangladesh from July 2006 to March 2007. Application of Trichoderma harzianum IMI 392432 significantly (p = 0.05) suppressed the disease compared to Alternaria tenuis (T2) treatment and improved both growth and yield. The treatment T4 (T. harzianum IMI-392432 + A. tenuis) was most effective in reducing disease percentage (72.27%) compared to A. tenuis (T1) treatment. The highest seed germination rate (85.56%) and the highest growth and yield (12.5 g/plant) was also recorded in the same treatment (T4), followed by T5 (T. harzianum IMI-392433 000000 + A. tenuis), T6 (T. harzianum IMI-392434 +A. tenuis), T2 (T. virens IMI-392430 + A. tenuis), and T3 (T. pseudokoningii IMI-392431 +A. tenuis) treatment, while single treatment with A. tenuis significantly decreased these values.

RESUMO

In 2007 to 2008, a fruit rot of Melon (Cucumis melo L.) caused by Sclerotium rolfsii occurred sporadically in a farmer's vinyl house in Jinju City. The symptoms started with watersoaking lesion and progressed into the rotting of the surface of fruit. White mycelial mats appeared on the lesion at the surface of the fruit and a number of sclerotia formed on the fruit near the soil line. The sclerotia were globoid in shape, 1~3 mm in size, and white to brown in color. The hyphal width was measured 3 to 8 microm. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth and sclerotia formation was 30 on PDA. Typical clamp connections were observed in hyphae of grown for 4 days on PDA. On the basis of symptoms, mycological characteristics and pathogenicity to the host plant, this fungus was identified as Sclerotium rolfsii Saccardo. This is the first report of the fruit rot of Melon caused by S. rolfsii in Korea.

RESUMO

Twenty-three isolates of Fusarium spp. were obtained from decayed citrus fruits in the fields and storages in 1998-1999. Of them, six and five isolates belonged to F. proliferatum and F. moniliforme, respectively, which were the most common. F. solani and F. sambucinum had each two isolates, F. equiseti had one isolate and seven isolates were unidentified. They produced symptoms of two types in pathogenicity test: those with leathery, beige to light or dark brown, and sunken lesions without surface mycelium (type-1) and those with lesions covered with white, beige or pink surface mycelium (type-2). Four of six isolates identified to F. proliferatum and two unidentified isolates produced type-1 lesions, and all isolates identified to F. moniliforme, F. solani, F. sambucinum, F. equiseti and five unidentified isolates produced type-2 lesions.
