RESUMO

Abstract Dipteryx alata Vogel is a tree species widely found in Cerrado, settling preferentially in well drained soils. Studies related to ecophysiology of D. alata may contribute to the decision making about using seedlings of this species in projects aimed at the recovery of degraded areas where seasonal flooding happens. This study aimed to assess the effects of flooding on photosynthetic and antioxidant metabolism and quality of D. alata seedlings cultivated or not under flooding during four assessment periods (0, 20, 40, and 60 days), followed by 100 days after the end of each assessment period (0+100, 20+100, 40+100, and 60+100 days), allowing verifying the potential for post-flooding recovery. Flooded plants showed lower photosynthetic efficiency than non-flooded plants, regardless of the periods of exposure. However, this efficiency was recovered in the post-flooding, with values similar to that of the non-flooded seedlings. Moreover, the damage to FV/FM was evidenced by an increase in the period of exposure to flooding, but recovery was also observed at this stage of the photosynthetic metabolism. Seedling quality decreased under flooding, not varying between periods of exposure, but remained lower although the increase observed in the post-flooding period, with no recovery after flooding. The occurrence of hypertrophied lenticels associated with physiological changes and an efficient antioxidant enzyme system might have contributed to the survival and recovery of these seedlings. Thus, this species is sensitive to flooding stress but capable of adjusting and recovering metabolic characteristics at 100 days after the suspension of the water stress, but with no recovery in seedling quality. Thus, we suggested plasticity under the cultivation condition and determined that the time of 100 days is not enough for the complete resumption of growth.

RESUMO

Objective:To evaluate the effect of intravenous infusion of lidocaine on pulmonary gas exchange function during acute lung injury in septic rats. Methods:Thirty clean-grade healthy male Sprague-Dawley rats, aged 2-3 months, weighing 220-280 g, were divided into 3 groups ( n=10 each) using a random number table method: control group (C group), sepsis group (S group) and lidocaine group (L group). Model of acute lung injury in septic rats was prepared by intraperitoneal injection of LPS 10 mg/kg in S and L groups, the equal volume of normal saline was injected in group C, lidocaine was injected at a loading dose of 10 mg/kg via the tail vein at 1 min after LPS injection and then continuously infused for 3 h at a rate of 10 mg·kg -1·h -1, and the equal volume of normal saline was given instead in C and S groups. Rats were sacrificed at 24 h after LPS injection, blood samples from the abdominal aorta were collected for blood gas analysis, and the oxygenation index (OI), alveolar-arterial oxygen difference (A-aDO 2) and respiratory index (RI) were calculated. Then the chest was immediately opened, and the left lung tissues were then immediately removed to determine the levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) (by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay). The right upper lung tissues were removed for microscopic examination of the alveolar structure and pulmonary edema with a light microscope. The right lower lung tissues were also removed to observe the vascular endothelial structure with a transmission electron microscope. Results:Compared with group C, the levels of A-aDO 2, RI, TNF-α, HO-1 and ROS were significantly increased, the PaO 2 and OI were decreased ( P<0.05), and no significant change was found in PaCO 2 in group S and group L ( P>0.05). Compared with group S, the PaO 2, OI and HO-1 were significantly increased, the levels of A-aDO 2, RI, TNF-α and ROS were decreased ( P<0.05), and no significant change was found in PaCO 2 levels in group L ( P>0.05). The pathological damages of the lung tissues were significantly attenuated in group L when compared with group S. Conclusions:Intravenous infusion of lidocaine can improve pulmonary gas exchange function during acute lung injury in septic rats.

RESUMO

Objective:To analyze the effect of lung protective ventilation on lung ventilation function and serum Clara cell protein 16 (CC16) level in patients undergoing gynecological laparoscopic surgery. Methods:The clinical data of 80 gynecological patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery in Yancheng City Jianhu County People′s Hospital from October 2018 to December 2020 were randomly divided into group A and group B by random number table, each group with 40 cases. The patients in group A were treated with intermittent positive-pressure ventilation, and the patients in group B were ventilated with whole course ventilation mode. The pulmonary ventilation function, CC16 level and postoperative pulmonary complications were observed before anesthesia, 10 min of pneumoperitoneum, 30 min of pneumoperitoneum, 5 min of pneumoperitoneum stop and 2 h after operation. The patients were divided into groups according to whether with pulmonary complications, and their pulmonary ventilation function and serum CC16 level were compared. The predictive value of the above indexes for pulmonary complications was analyzed by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results:Repeated measurement analysis of variance showed that alveolar arterial oxygen differential pressure (PA-aDO 2) were significant differences in time point factors, time point interaction factors and group factors ( P<0.05); CC16 index were significant differences in time point factor and group factor ( P<0.05). According to the observation from postoperative to discharge, 4 patients (10.0%) in group A had pulmonary complications, 15 cases (37.5%) had pulmonary complications in group B, the levels of PA-aDO 2 and CC16 in patients with complications were significantly higher than those in patients without complications: group A:(332.9 ± 2.0) mmHg (1 mmHg = 0.133 kPa) vs. (290.4 ± 13.2) mmHg, (53.5 ± 1.5) μg/L vs. (39.5 ± 6.5) μg/L; group B: (339.1 ± 8.8) mmHg vs. (305.7 ± 17.9) mmHg, (41.5 ± 4.2) μg/L vs. (39.7 ± 5.8) μg/L, there were statistical differences ( P<0.05). ROC curve analysis showed that the area under the curve(AUC) of PA-aDO 2 and CC16 in predicting pulmonary complications in group A were 0.882 and 0.833, in group B was 0.885 and 0.731. Conclusions:Lung protective ventilation has little effect on lung ventilation function and serum CC16 in patients with gynecological laparoscopic surgery, and the probability of pulmonary complications is lower. The pulmonary ventilation function and CC16 have certain value in predicting postoperative pulmonary complications.

RESUMO

A wide range of soybean cultivars is available on the market and understanding the physiological response and yield of these materials is fundamental to develop new management systems. Thus, the objective of the present study was to assess ecophysiological parameters and yield of soybean cultivars under field conditions. The experiment was carried out on a farm located in the municipality of Açailândia, Maranhão, Brazil. Three commercial cultivars were used (SC1, SC2 and SC3), and gas exchanges, SPAD index, Fv/Fm, photosynthesis index (PI), instantaneous water use efficiency (WUE) and intrinsic instantaneous of the use of water (iWUE) were assessed during the vegetative (V5) and reproductive (R5) stages. In addition, the biomass and production components were obtained. A randomized complete block design was used, with three cultivars and six replications. SC2 obtained the best mean for the photochemical variables. SC2 was more efficient at both development stages in WUE, but the maximum iWUE values were obtained in SC3. The SC2 cultivar obtained the best responses in the main variables analyzed, resulting in a higher yield.

RESUMO

The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of abscisic acid (ABA) on gas exchange and the activity of antioxidant enzymes of Ormosia arborea (Vell.) Harms seedlings under water deficit and its influence on the recovery potential of the seedlings. The experiment was conducted using four treatments, being daily irrigation or water restriction without and with 10 μM ABA. Seedlings under water deficit + ABA showed greater adjustment to drought, and when re-irrigated, they restored photosynthetic metabolism and water potential. ABA minimizes the reduction in the photosynthetic metabolism and water potential of the leaf, however, it does not increase the antioxidant activity of the O. arborea seedlings under water deficit. These results suggest that this species exhibits plasticity, which enables it to survive also in environments subjected to temporary water deficit regardless of the supplementation of ABA. We suggest that other doses of ABA be researched to expand the beneficial effect of ABA on this species.

Abstract Introduction: Major adverse events (MAE) are unexpected but undesirably frequent after pediatric congenital heart surgery and contribute to poorer outcomes. The aim of this study was to test the predictive value of a ratio between central venous oxygen saturation and arterial lactate (ScvO2/lactate) for MAE after pediatric congenital heart surgery in a Brazilian university hospital. Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study in a tertiary care university hospital, including 194 infants and children submitted to surgery for congenital heart disease. The predictive value of ScvO2, lactate, and ScvO2/lactate ratio were assessed by the area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC), sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV). Results: The incidence of MAE was 16% — cardiac arrest/death, unplanned reoperation, and low cardiac output syndrome were the most common events. Overall, ScvO2/lactate ratio discriminated patients with and without MAE very well (AUC 0.842), performing better than either variable alone, with sensitivity of 48%, specificity of 94%, PPV of 60%, and NPV of 91%. Conclusion: A ScvO2/lactate ratio > 5 can accurately identify patients at low risk of MAE after pediatric congenital heart surgery, with very good specificity and NPV, but poor sensitivity and PPV.

Registro Clinical Trials: NCT04486729.

ABSTRACT Objective: To compare gas exchange indices behavior by using liberal versus conservative oxygenation targets in patients with moderate to severe acute respiratory distress syndrome secondary to COVID-19 under invasive mechanical ventilation. We also assessed the influence of high FiO2 on respiratory system mechanics. Methods: We prospectively included consecutive patients aged over 18 years old with a diagnosis of COVID-19 and moderate-severe acute respiratory distress syndrome. For each patient, we randomly applied two FiO2 protocols to achieve SpO2 88% - 92% or 96%. We assessed oxygenation indices and respiratory system mechanics. Results: We enrolled 15 patients. All the oxygenation indices were significantly affected by the FiO2 strategy (p < 0.05) selected. The PaO2/FiO2 deteriorated, PA-aO2 increased and Pa/AO2 decreased significantly when using FiO2 to achieve SpO2 96%. Conversely, the functional shunt fraction was reduced. Respiratory mechanics were not affected by the FiO2 strategy. Conclusion: A strategy aimed at liberal oxygenation targets significantly deteriorated gas exchange indices, except for functional shunt, in COVID-19-related acute respiratory distress syndrome. The respiratory system mechanics were not altered by the FiO2 strategy. Clinical Trials Register: NCT04486729.

RESUMO

Abstract Heart failure (HF) is the most common cause of pulmonary hypertension (PH), and reduced exercise capacity and exertional dyspnea are the most frequent concerns in patients with PH-HF. Indeed, carbon dioxide end-tidal partial pressure (PETCO 2 ) during exercise is a well-established noninvasive marker of ventilation/perfusion ratio in PH. We aimed to evaluate the effect of aerobic exercise training on PETCO 2 response during exercise in a 59-year-old woman with PH secondary to idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. The patient with chronic fatigue and dyspnea at mild-to-moderate efforts was admitted to a cardiorespiratory rehabilitation program and had her cardiorespiratory response to exercise assessed during a cardiopulmonary exercise testing performed before and after three months of a thrice-weekly aerobic exercise training program. Improvements in aerobic capacity (23.9%) and endurance time (37.5%) and reduction in ventilatory inefficiency (-20.2%) was found after intervention. Post-intervention improvements in PETCO 2 at ventilatory anaerobic threshold (23.3%) and change in PETCO 2 kinetics pattern, with progressive increases from rest to peak of exercise, were also found. Patient also improved breathing pattern and timing of ventilation. This case report demonstrated for the first time that aerobic exercise training might be able to improve PETCO 2 response during exercise in a patient with PH-HF.

Abstract: Introduction: It has been suggested that the use of a cell saver reduces the content of proinflammatory cytokines after cardiac surgery, improving the balance of these cytokines in the systemic circulation, which in turn could minimize the inflammatory response that contributes to postoperative pulmonary dysfunction. Objective: To compare the postoperative gas exchange in patients undergoing cardiac surgery with the use of cell saver and without it. Material and methods: A prospective cohort study that included 253 patients undergoing cardiac surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass. The patients were assigned to two study groups depending on whether a cell saver was used: group I (without cell saver) and group II (with cell saver). The PaO2/FiO2 ratio and the postoperative respiratory morbidity were then estimated. The analysis was done using descriptive and inferential statistics by means of the Student t test and Mann-Whitney U test. A p < 0.05 was considered significant. The data were processed using SPSS v. 24.0. Results: 59.29% of patients underwent surgery with the use of a cell saver. The PaO2/FiO2 ratio was lower in group II (p = 0.018). There were no differences between groups in respiratory morbidity 30 days after surgery (p = 0.943). Conclusion: The postoperative gas exchange is lower in patients undergoing cardiac surgery with the use of a cell saver than without it.

RESUMO

Physalis peruviana L. is a solanacea that has been gaining prominence due to its fruits presenting good acceptance in the national and international market. However, several abiotic factors, such as salinity, can cause physiological disturbances in plants, and these changes may be of greater or lesser intent according to species. Therefore, the objective of the present work was to evaluate the physiological behavior of P. peruviana submitted to different fluxes of photosynthetically active photons (PPFD) and saline stress. The experimental design was a randomized block design with three saline levels (ECw) (0.5, 2.75 and 5.00 dS m-1) with four replications. Gas exchange measurements were performed with a portable infrared gas analyzer. Liquid CO2 assimilation, stomatal conductance, internal CO2 concentration, water use efficiency and instantaneous carboxylation efficiency were measured. Data were subjected to analysis of variance by F test and in cases of significance applied to regression analysis. The increase in PPFD provided reductions in stomatal conductance up to the density of approximately 400 µmol m-2s-1, being more pronounced in ECw of 2.75 and 5.0 dS m-1. The maximum CO2 assimilation rates in the three salinities are different according to the PPFD. The salinity of irrigation water reduced the quantum efficiency of photosynthesis in P. peruviana plants.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Water stress is one of the serious abiotic stresses that negatively influences the growth, development and production of sugarcane in arid and semi-arid regions. However, silicon (Si) has been applied as an alleviation strategy subjected to environmental stresses. METHODS: In this experiment, Si was applied as soil irrigation in sugarcane plants to understand the mitigation effect of Si against harmful impact of water stress on photosynthetic leaf gas exchange. RESULTS: In the present study we primarily revealed the consequences of low soil moisture content, which affect overall plant performance of sugarcane significantly. Silicon application reduced the adverse effects of water stress by improving the net photosynthetic assimilation rate (Anet) 1.35-18.75%, stomatal conductance to water vapour (gs) 3.26-21.57% and rate of transpiration (E) 1.16-17.83%. The mathematical models developed from the proposed hypothesis explained the functional relationships between photosynthetic responses of Si application and water stress mitigation. CONCLUSIONS: Silicon application showed high ameliorative effects on photosynthetic responses of sugarcane to water stress and could be used for mitigating environmental stresses in other crops, too, in future.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Organic farming techniques gained popularity recently. Despite this increasing demand, there are still many problems, when comparing nutrient sources in organic and conventional farming systems. The study had as objective to evaluate the development of blueberry plants cultivar 'Climax' under protected cultivation in a substrate with different proportions of organic material and doses of applied mineral N. The blueberry nursery plants 'Climax' were transplanted into plastic pots and kept under protected cultivation. The soil and sand proportions were 40 and 20%, respectively, of the volume capacity of each pot. The remaining 40% were filled with organic material (bovine manure) and sawdust in the proportions of 5 and 35% (S1), 20 and 20% (S2) or 35 and 5% (S3), respectively. The experimental design was in complete randomized blocks, and the treatments were distributed in a 3x3 factorial arrangement, with six replications. The first factor was the different formulations of substrates. The second factor was N fertilization at 0, 10, and 15 g N plant-1. Evaluations of canopy volume, total leaf area, chlorophyll content and gas exchanges were performed six and eighteen months after transplanting. Fruits were harvested according to their ripening. Higher proportions of organic material in the substrate showed a substantial increase on estimated leaf area, canopy volume, chlorophyll content and clear efficiency of carboxylation (A/Ci), especially in plants that was not fertilized with mineral N. The highest yield was reported for the substrate S2, with intermediary amount of organic material, without the application of mineral N fertilizer. Considering agronomic and physiological traits, blueberry plants on the substrate S2 (20% OM) showed the best results, without mineral N fertilizing, becoming viable the organic management system for potted 'Climax' blueberry plants under protected cultivation.

Nematodes of the genus Meloidogyne spp. are one of the tomato culture's main pathogens. According to their soil infestation level, physiological changes may occur. Consequently, it is extremely important to employ given products to minimize their effect. A feasible option is the salicylic acid, a phytohormone that can induce into resistance due to its ability to increase the production level of some pathogenicity proteins. Therefore, the purpose hereof was to assess the effect of salicylic acid on the physiology of tomato plants subject to different populational densities of Meloidogyne javanica. The design employed was one of randomized blocks, in an incomplete factorial scheme, using the Box Central Compound (BCC) matrix with five nematode populational densities (PD) (0; 5815; 20000; 34184; and 40000 eggs per plant) and five salicylic acid doses (0.0; 0.29; 1.0; 1.71; and 2.0 mM), with four repetitions and two plants per experimental patch. The gas exchanges, fluorescence, and chlorophyll levels were evaluated 45 days after the transplant and soil infestation. The data were submitted for analysis of variance through the F test and, in the significance cases, the polynomial regression analysis was performed. For stomatal conductance, a greater reduction was seen at the PD of 21755 eggs per plant, a fact that might have decreased the liquid assimilation of CO2 and the efficiency of carboxylation. The salicylic acid (SA) affected the CO2 liquid assimilation and the efficiency of carboxylation. The infestation of M. javanica in tomato plants negatively affected the gas exchange and the chlorophyll levels because the SA application did not mitigate the negative effect thereof.

Abstract The diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) is, after spirometry the standard and noninvasive pulmonary function test of greater clinical use. However, there are substantial errors in the interpretation of the physiological significance of the DLCO, its derived measures and, therefore the clinical significance of its alterations. In addition to the use of different nomenclatures, other sources of confusion have contributed to some negative view of the test. The technical aspects of the DLCO test have the advantage of being well standardized. But unlike what happens with other pulmonary function tests where we have reference values which allow us to determine their "normality or abnormality", it is difficult to apply this route of analysis in the case of DLCO. The central fact in the analysis of DLCO, transference factor for CO (KCO), and alveolar volume (VA) is that for a correct interpretation it is necessary to think about the mechanism by which the pathology induces change. A KCO of 100% can be considered normal in some circumstances or pathological in others and, for the moment, the automated study report cannot discriminate. This article will address the principles of the DLCO test; present different models of analysis submit concrete examples and provide guidelines for their correct interpretation. It is considered essential to carry out an integrated analysis of the DLCO test in relation to other functional tests and clinical data.

RESUMO

Melon (Cucumis melo L.) is a crop of great socioeconomic importance in regions with semiarid climate, as found in Northeast Brazil. In this region water deficit is a usual condition as well as the main reduction factor of plant productivity. Due to this phenomenon, irrigation techniques are used to make available the amount of water needed for plant production. Therefore, this study evaluated the physiology and fruit production changes of 'Juazeiro' Piel de sapo melon plants under different water replacement rates. 'Juazeiro' melon was grown under four reference evapotranspiration replacement rates (40, 60, 80 and 100% of ETo) distributed randomly in blocks with 5 replicates. The plants were cultivated in the field, in an experimental area located in the Brazilian Northeast region, under hot and dry semiarid climatic conditions, and during the growing cycle the 'Juazeiro' hybrid melon plants were evaluated for leaf area, biomass accumulation, gas exchange, photochemical efficiency of photosystem PSII and production of fruits per plant. Application of water replacement rates of 100% ETo leads to highest growth, net photosynthesis, and fruit yield of 'Juazeiro' melon. Water replacement at 80% ETo can be used for 'Juazeiro" melon under semiarid climatic conditions, but with small losses in fruit yield. Water replacement below 80% ETo leads to drastic reductions in growth, gas exchanges, quantum efficiency of photosystem II and fruit yield, which impairs melon production in semi-arid climate environments. KEYWORDS: Fruits yield. Gas exchange. Photochemical efficiency. INTRODUCTION Melon (Cucumis melo L.) is an important socioeconomic fruit cultivated in the world. Melon fruit production was 29.6 million tons and this production is distributed among China, Turkey, Iran, Egypt, India, United States, and Brazil. These countries account for 70% of the world production (FAO, 2017). In Brazil, cultivated area exceeded 22.000 ha with more than 521.6 thousand tons in 2015. 94.7% of this production was obtained in the semi-arid region of Northeast, mainly in the states of Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte, the largest producers in the country (IBGE, 2014). However, especially due to irregular rainfall, melon fruit production has been dropping in the last few years in this region. According to Pereira Filho et al. (2015), melon plants growth, development, and fruit production are greatly affected by climate conditions, mainly by water stress. Water stress is one of the most complex physiological phenomena because it is a multidimensional component which can considerably limit agricultural crops growth and development (DOGAN et al., 2008; LISAR et al., 2012; SILVA et al., 2015), generally in arid and semi-arid regions, such as in Northeast Brazil. Moreover, plant adaptability to water deficit conditions is related to a range of events occurring at several levels (LISAR et al., 2012), observed as a physiological, biochemical, and molecular adaptations, among others. At plant physiological level, soil water deficit has a significant effect on gas exchange, because it is a result of the limitation of stomatal conductance, and it is considered the primary cause of photosynthetic inhibition due to CO2 influx limitation, as well as water efflux from transpiration Received: 08/04/19 Accepted: 20/12/19
