RESUMO

Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases in which there are high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period, and if untreated could lead to complications. This study, carried out at the Igbinedion university teaching hospital Okada to ascertain some hematological parameters, using 69 known diabetes patients who enrolled as an Out-patient in the General Out-Patient Department and 69 non-diabetes apparently healthy individuals as control. Thirty-nine of thesediabetic individuals were female, while thirty were male individuals. For the non-diabetic individuals, thirty-seven were female, and thirty-two were male representing 53.6% and 46.4% respectively. Ethical approval from the institution was sought prior to commencement of study and quality control of reagents was strictly maintained. Five millilitres of whole blood was collected into an Ethylene Diamine Tetra-Acetic acid (EDTA) anticoagulated bottle, and haematological parameters including PCV, HB, WBC, RBC,MCV, MCH, MCHC and platelet count were conducted for all individuals. Result obtained for Diabetic individuals showed a mean value of 34.63, 11.24, 4.41, 7.20 and 204.27 for PCV, Hb, RBC, WBC and platelets counts respectively, while for non-diabetic individuals, a mean value of 35.04, 10.09, 3.99, 7.07 and 262.56 respectively.Hb concentration and RBC count were statistically significant (p < 0.05). The Red cell indices, MCV and MCHC, were statistically significant. This study showed a statistically significant variation in some hematological parameters of diabetic patients compared to control group .Low platelet count and alteration to red cell morphology as indicated in values of MCV and MCHC among diabetic patients are indicators of thrombotic potential. Hence, routine screening of hematological parameters should be considered for proper management of diabetic patients.

RESUMO

Background: The association of combustive emission has been inter-related with haematologic parameters and a likelihoodto pro-inflammatory state. This research is aimed at assessing the impact of vehicular emission on erythrocyte level and red cell indices of occupationally exposed subjects. Methods:The level of haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit, red blood cells, mean cell volume, mean cell haemoglobin, mean cell haemoglobin concentration, and red cell distribution width were determined in four hundred subjects with the aid of Mythic 22 haematology autoanalyser. Results:The comparison of the haemoglobin and haematocrit shows that the value of mean ± standard error value of generator exposed and mechanics respectively were significantly higher than the other groups (p< 0.03). On the otherhand, the red blood cell count for generator exposed and mechanics ranked higherthan the other groups (p< 0.03). The mean cell volume (MCV) of generator exposed and mechanics were 86.57±0.08 fl and 84.49±1.04 fl respectively while control and drivers had values of 93.24±1.13 fl and 93.22±1.13 fl respectively (p< 0.03). The mechanics recorded a mean cell haemoglobin (MCH) of 26.92±0.40 pg which was significantly lower (p< 0.04) than the control (30.37±0.47 pg), generator exposed (39.68±6.38 pg) and drivers (30.42±0.47 pg). Conclusion:The differences amongst the groups and none of the groups were within the medically acceptable ranges which is a pointer to the fact that there might be an underlying inflammatory condition which might be due to occupational exposure

RESUMO

Background: Hepatic involvement in Dengue is known with protean of manifestations ranging from hepatomegaly, elevated liver enzymes to fulminant hepatic failure. Aim of the study was to study the hepatic manifestations in children with dengue illness. Methods: This is a prospective Study with 60 Patients hospitalized with Dengue infection (Seropositive for Dengue). Dengue Seropositive patients are selected and examined for Hepatomegaly and Jaundice and subjected to complete blood count and Liver function tests were analysed. Results: Of 60 serologically confirmed cases hospitalized with dengue, were classified into (i)(DF), (ii) DHF I (iii) DHF II (iv) DHF III and (v) DHF IV.' In our study, upon 60 seropositive cases were reported at our hospital during the study period of which 18 were DF, 12 were DHF I, 15 were DHFII, 8 were DHF III and 7 were DHF IV respectively. The Hematocrit levels were raised 20% from the baseline in four classes of Dengue and not raised in DF. Most commonly occurred in age group of 5-7 years. Hepatomegaly was the commonest clinical sign seen. Thrombocytopenia was seen in 88% of all cases. Serum total bilirubin was raised in 10% of subjects with severe dengue infection in DHF III and DHF IV. Serum SGOT and SGPT was raised in 63.3% and 56.7% of patients with dengue of all classes including DF respectively. Thrombocytopenia occurred in 75% of patients with dengue fever, 98% with warning signs and 100% in severe dengue. Conclusions: In developing country like India, incidence of dengue outbreaks is increasing. Hepatic involvement of varying degrees have been reported. As hepatic dysfunction in dengue is transient and reversible, early identification of the same would help to reduce life threatening complications. The role of hepato protective drugs in reducing morbidity and mortality should be analysed by further studies.

RESUMO

@#Introduction: Haematological parameters decrease following one unit of whole blood donation which results in a detrimental effect on cardiorespiratory fitness and maximal exercise capacity. However, it remains unclear to what extent blood donation will impact exercise performance across varying levels of cardiorespiratory fitness. The aim of this study is to compare the effects of a standard blood donation on maximal exercise performance performed 24 h post-blood donation in individuals with varying levels of cardiorespiratory fitness. Methods: Forty-two males (mean age 22 ± 2.1 years) were recruited and segregated into Low, Moderate and Superior fitness groups. Subjects performed a multi-stage shuttle run test on the day prior to a standard blood donation procedure, and subsequently 24 h post-blood donation. Blood samples were taken on both test days and analysed for haematological parameters. Results: Exercise performance, represented by predicted VO2max were 0.6%, 1.0% and 4.1% lower in the Low, Moderate and Superior fitness groups respectively. However, the magnitude of reduction was only statistically significant in the Superior fitness group (p = 0.017). Compared to baseline, all fitness groups demonstrated significant reductions in haematocrit (Low: -8.4%, Moderate: -9.1%, Superior: -7.2%) and haemoglobin (Low: -7.6%, Moderate: -7.8%, Superior: -5.5%) levels at 24 h post-blood donation. Spearman correlation analysis revealed that changes in haemoglobin concentrations were not associated with changes in exercise performance in all groups. Conclusion: Exercise performance was only significantly reduced in the Superior fitness group. Well-trained individuals should be refrained from blood donation just prior to competitions.

The mean corpuscular volumes (MCV) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) are the standards used for the classification of anemia, however, in recent years begun to use the amplitude diameter distribution of red blood cells (RDW) to distinguish anemias in regenerative and arregenerativas. This study aims to compare the RDW and MCV values with the erythrocyte cytometry in dogs with leishmaniasis. blood of 19 dogs of different breeds and ages were collected. The blood samples were processed in automatic equipment to obtain the MCV and RDW and later made blood smears for counting and measuring erythrocyte hundred cells from each slide. To evaluate the dispersion between the RBC values used the linear coefficient of Pearson. The RDW were more sensitive to anemia than VCM as compared with erythrocyte cytometry.(AU)

RESUMO

In order to evidence the hematological changes induced by the venom of the scorpion Tityus discrepans, a sublethal dose of Tityus discrepans venom (Tdv, 1 µg/g) in a total volume of 0.1 mL was intraperitoneally injected in BALB/c female mice (20±2 g; n=20). Mice were anesthetized and blood samples were withdrawn by cardiocentesis at 0 h, 3 h, 6 h, and 12 h after Tdv administration. Hematologic analyses were performed by routine procedures. A significant (p<0.05) increase in hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration and total protein concentration was observed at 3 h and 6 h, possibly due to dehydration, splenic contraction and acute-phase protein induction. The red blood cell count in envenomed mice was significantly (p<0.05) higher in comparison with the control only at 12 h. Tityus discrepans venom caused neutrophilia and lymphopenia probably as a result of catecholamine release, without significant (p>0.05) changes in absolute leukocyte count. Neither platelets number nor hematimetric indexes significantly (p>0.05) changed. Altogether, these results suggest that Tdv administration induces alterations in the hematologic profile in mice.

Background: In the north central Nigeria, observed haemoglobin concentration is often used to determine the packed cell volume of patients, especially by many laboratories that cannot afford the cost of micro-haematocrit centrifuge. Aim: The study was carried out to determine the accuracy of 3-fold haemoglobin conversion to haematocrit level in anaemic conditions. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted on 580 symptomatic (febrile) patients and 810 subclinically anaemic subjects attending some selected private medical laboratories, hospitals and clinics in Kuje Area Council of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Nigeria. Calculated haemotocrit was obtained by multiplying observed haemoglobin concentration by three while the observed haemoglobin was determined by colorimetric technique using Drabkin solution. Observed haematocrit was determined by using microhaematocrit technique. Mean observed and mean calculated haematocrit were statistically analyzed by students’ T-Test and findings compared. Results: Findings revealed a significant bias for higher degree of anaemia when 3-fold haemoglobin (calculated haematocrit) was employed than when observed haematocrit was used to determine anaemia in children within 1-10 years of age (T=2.1630, P<0.05). Also, this study showed a significant difference between mean calculated haematocrit and mean observed haematocrit in post-haemorrhagic conditions (T=3.0151, P<0.05). Conclusion: Use of direct haemoglobin estimation and derived haematocrit is advocated to diagnose anaemia in children and post-haemorrhagic conditions. Side laboratories are advised to enroll into proficiency testing programmes to monitor accuracy of their assay results.

RESUMO

Intake of different types of protein may be associated with differences in biomarkers among various populations. This work investigated the influence of protein intake from haem and non-haem animals as well as protein from plants on haematological and biochemical parameters in inflammation among apparentlyhealthy adults living in Greece, a Mediterranean country. Four hundred and ninety apparently-healthy subjects (46±16 years, 40% men), who consecutively visited Polykliniki General Hospital for routine examinations, voluntarily agreed to participate in the study (participation rate 85%). Demographic, anthropometric and lifestyle characteristics were recorded. Participants completed a valid, semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Protein intake was classified into three sources: protein from haem animals, protein from non-haem animals, and protein from plant origin. Fasting blood samples were taken from all participants; uric acid, creatinine, lipids, cystatin C, haptoglobin, haemoglobin, haematocrit, iron, ferritin, white blood cells, monocytes, platelets, and C-reactive protein were measured. Protein intake from only haem animals was associated with increased haemoglobin and haematocrit levels (p<0.05) whereas intake of protein from non-haem animals and plant origin was not associated with the investigated haematological and biochemical markers of low-grade chronic inflammation when lifestyle factors and overall dietary habits were taken into account. Intake of protein from only haem animals seems to be consistently associated with haematological markers. The confounding role of dietary habits and lifestyle variables on the tested parameters deserves further attention in future research.

The effects of ascorbate on the haematocrit and blood glucose level were evaluated in Nile tilapia alevins (Oreochromis niloticus) submitted to a transport simulation. Three experimental diets with different levels of vitamin C (16, 500 and 1000mg/kg) were given for 14 days before the simulation of the transport. The treatment containing 16mg of vitamin C showed the highest level of glucose after the simulation (108.5mg/dl immediately after the transport and 91mg/dl 12 hours after the transport). The vitamin C concentration of 1000mg/kg was the most efficient treatment to control glycemia increases (94.6mg/dl immediately after the simulation and 74.4mg/dl 12 hour after simulation). In the 500mg/kg treatment, the glucose level was 91.4mg/dl immediately after the simulation and 103.8mg/dl 12 hours after the simulation. The haematocrit values did not show any significative variation (P<0.05). The supplementation with 1000mg/kg of vitamin C for a 14 days period can be used in a prophylactic way to soften glycemia increases in Nile tilapia alevins submitted to transport stress

RESUMO

Pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) is an obligatory air-breathing fish from the Amazon basin. Previous study showed that pirarucu juveniles present a latency period in their response to moderate stress (transportation). Therefore the objective of this study was to verify the effects of a prolonged air exposure stress in lactate, glucose, cortisol, haematocrit, haemoglobin, and liver glycogen in pirarucu. Thirty-six fish were handled by netting and subjected to air exposure for 75-min. Six fish were sampled before handling and at 0, 6, 24, 48, and 96h after handling. Fish cortisol, lactate and haematocrit rose after handling, returning to previous unstressed values on the following sampling (6h after handling). Glucose increased significantly after handling and that was maintained for 24 h. There were no changes in haemoglobin and liver glycogen as a consequence of handling. The results demonstrate a quick response when exposed to an acute stressor and a fast recovery, suggesting that pirarucu does not use their glycogen reserves during an acute stress. The results suggest that pirarucu exhibit physiological stress responses to handling similar in magnitude to those previously documented for many teleostean fishes, including salmonids.

The resistivity of blood fiom patients with cerebral vascular disease, anticoagulated with dried .sodium heprin, were investigated. The results showed that the resistivity of blood is found to increase linearly as the haemetocrit level increase from 35% to 51% at a fixed temperature of 37℃ and measuring fiequency 1.5 kHz. The regression equation was p=3.09Hct+7.13, (r=0.992).The influence of fibrinogen on the resistivity might partly be the result of interfacial polarization and red cell rouleaux formation.
