RESUMO

Background: Hemoglobin (Hb) estimation is one of the most frequently ordered investigations. Estimation of exact levels is important to stratify the grade of anemia and subsequently direct the necessary treatment. Conventionally, Hb has been estimated using colorimetric method, which is time tested and recommended by the WHO. Now-a-days, the automated method is also becoming a popular method in many hospitals. However, there are not many studies assessing the accuracy of the automated method over the gold standard. Materials and methods: We retrospectively analyzed hemoglobin values in 180 adult patient-samples (18 per batch in 10 batches). Hemolyzed samples were excluded from the study. Blood samples were drawn in vials having K3 EDTA anticoagulants. After a proper mixing, hemoglobin was estimated by automated Sysmex XS-800i. Parallel estimation for Hb content was done manually by spectrophotometer 4010. Results: Patients ranged from ages 20 to 40 years (M:F=102:78). The lowest value recorded by Sysmex XS-800i was 5.8 while the highest value recorded was 18.6 gm%. The mean hemoglobin concentration on Sysmex XS-800i was 12.89. The lowest, highest and mean values recorded by the cyanmethemoglobin method on photometer were 5, 18 and 13.49 gm% respectively. This showed a mean difference of 0.597 and with significant p-value of <0.001. Conclusion: The lowest values of Hb were similar in both the methods but the mean as well as the highest values differed significantly. Our study found an accuracy of 95.57% with the 5 part analyzer when compared to the gold standard colorimetric method.

Objective To investigate the practical application values of copper sulfate method and hemocyte analyzer in blood do‐nation screening .Methods A total of 1 500 blood samples of donors were randomly collected and determined by using both copper sulfate method and hemocyte analyzer .Taking hemocyte analyzer as the reference method ,the sensitivity and specificity of copper sulfate method for detecting hemoglobin(Hb) were calculated .The overall detection rates of abnormal blood samples determinded by the two methods were calculated ,as well .Statistical comparisons were performed on the test data from both methods .Results A total of 29 donors(accounted for 1 .9% ) with unacceptable Hb value were found by using copper sulfate method .For all blood do‐nors ,the sensitivity and specificity of copper sulfate method for Hb screening before blood donation was 99 .7% and 82 .8% ,respec‐tively .And there were no statistically significant differences in sensitivity and specificity between the two methods for Hb estima‐tion(P>0 .05) .There were 336 donors with abnormal blood samples detected by using hemocyte analyzer .Taking hemocyte analy‐zer as the reference method ,only 8 .6% of donors with abnormal blood samples were screened out by using copper sulfate method . Conclusion The copper sulfate method could be used for Hb screening before blood donation .While because of its limitations ,such as relatively low specificity and inadequate screening items ,the hemocyte analyzer shoud be utilized before blood donation if the con‐ditions permit .

The present cross-sectional study involving 240 women of reproductive age as the study population was carried out in the beneficiary slum area, the field practice area of Community Medicine department to find out the burden of nutritional anemia and study its epidemiological correlates. The prevalence of anemia was found to be 60.8%, of which 39.6, 20.0 and 1.2% women had mild, moderate and severe anemia, respectively. Almost 63, 21.2 and 15.7% of the study subjects had microcytic hypochromic picture, indicative of iron deficiency anemia, normocytic hypochromic picture suggestive of early stage of iron deficiency anemia and dimorphic/ macrocytic hypochromic anemia implying iron deficiency anemia and or folate/vitamin B12 deficiency respectively. Statistical analyses have shown that epidemiological factors like age, education of respondents, socioeconomic status, history of excessive menstrual bleeding and inadequate intake of green leafy vegetables and pulses were found to be significantly associated with anemia.
