RESUMO

Cancer chemotherapy engenders a gamut of unpredictable and perilous toxicities, which can cause substantial mortality, morbidity, and results in escalated healthcare costs due to increased requirement for ameliorative treat-ments and toxicity-related hospitalization. The main objective of this article is to report a range of adverse effects of CHOP regimen in patients with intermediate grade Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL). This randomized prospective study was conducted on de novo intermediate grade NHL patients, aged >20≤60 years, receiving CHOP chemotherapy regimen. Out of 30 patients who satisfied the inclusion criteria, only 25 patients completed 6 cycles of chemotherapy and were evaluated for various toxicities. Evaluation of all the 25 subjects showed that, in comparison with the baseline, most patients exhibited toxic damages. The hepatopancreatic, dermatological, vascular and nephrological damages, eventually resulted in weight loss, hepatomegaly, alopecia, hypotension, as well as abnormal levels of serum liver markers, serum creatinine and blood glucose. But, the necessity to interrupt the CHOP treatment did not arise in any of the patients. Thus, in this study combination chemotherapy with CHOP protocol was well tolerated by majority of the subjects.

RESUMO

Bronchial mucoepidermoid carcinoma is uncommon, representing 0.2% of all lung tumors. The disease usually presents with symptoms of airway obstruction and recurrent pneumonia. It is commonly classified into two grades in Korea, low and high. We report a case of a bronchial mucoepidermoid carcinoma in a 40-year-old woman who complained of symptoms of an upper respiratory infection. The histological grade after a bronchoscopic biopsy was intermediate. A left upper lobectomy was performed as treatment. The TNM stage of this case was IA (T1N0M0). In addition, 25 cases of bronchial mucoepidermoid carcinoma from 1984 in Korea are also reviewed from the viewpoint of the relationship between the histological grade, TNM stage and clinical course of the tumor.

RESUMO

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma occurs commonly in salivary gland, but rarely in lacrimal gland. In literature about ten or more cases of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the lacrimal gland have been described. A 73-year-old woman had noted upper lid swelling and lacrimation of the left eye for 2 months. Computed tomographic scan demonstrated a large homogenous mass on superotemporal portion of the left orbit. The mass extended into the left temporal fossa, middle cranial fossa, and ethmoidal sinus with bone destruction. Histopathologically, the mass was proved to be a intermediate grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the lacrimal gland.

RESUMO

Radiotherapy result of 162 patients with stage I, II Intermediate Grade Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was analyzed to clarify the role and limit of radiotherapy. Of 68 initial failures, 38.2% stageI was 30.0% and 70.0%, respectively with involved field treatment and was 43.8% and 56.2% with extended field treatment, respectively; in stageII, was 16.7% and 83.3%, 41.7% and 58.3% and 40.4% for patients with stage I and II, respectively. The survival was significantly different by stage. Bulky tumors (> or =10 cm) and B symptoms didn't influence prognosis significantly. The 5 year disease free survival with extended or wide field was better than that with involved field especially in stage I. Overall survival rates for all patients, patients with stageI, and II disease were 57.7%, 65.3% and 52.2%, respectively, after survival gain of the salvage chemotherapy was combined. But the overall survival of stageI disease was not better than that of stageII disease. Thus, extended field was required to achieve better disease free survival and relapsed cases might gain with chemotherapy.
