RESUMO

Background: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common ulcerative disease of the oral mucosa, which is difficult to treat. In Ayurveda, several medicinal plants have been evaluated for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in many oral diseases as an alternative for modern medicines. Method: A study with open-label, non-comparative single-arm design was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of “Stomatab” capsules in improving oral health in 30 subjects with RAS. The secondary objectives were to assess the improvement in oral health and tolerability of the herbal formulation. Subjects were instructed to take one capsule thrice daily after meals for 14 days. Patients were evaluated at three assessment points: screening and baseline (Visit 1, Day 0) with follow-ups done at Visit 2 (Day 5 ± 2) and Visit 3 at the end of the study (Day 14 ± 2). Results: There was a significant reduction in the mean ulcer size from 3.66 ± 1.27 mm (V1) to 0.64 ± 0.78 (V3). The mean number of ulcers reduced from 1.97 ± 0.72 (V1) to 0.90 ± 0.66 (V3). Significant improvement in ulcer-related symptoms of pain (Ruja), burning sensation (Daha) and redness (Raktavarnata) was noted. The total ulcer symptom scores decreased from 7.67 ± 2.38 (V1) to 0.63 ± 0.56 (V3). No side effects were reported by the study participants. Conclusion: These results show that the polyherbal formulation “Stomatab” capsule is safe and effective for the treatment of RAS.

Plants are the real basis towards animal life and are also central to people's livelihood. The contributions of the plants in performing varied religious celebrations and in other multiple beneficiaries like medicine, human happiness as well as in treating deadly diseases can never be neglected. In treating diseases, the plants and their constituents are better choice than any other synthetic chemical. The nature has been kind enough to provide the human beings with various types of medicinal plants and in the real sense these form the storehouse of curing almost all the ailments. Consequently, most of the drugs which are being used in preparing formulations have their origin and roots in the plants which form the chief natural source of medicines. Even in modern era, the plant-derived drugs are being extensively used, either in their original or semi-synthetic form. It is because their natural phytoconstituents are highly innocuous posing relatively fewer or no side effects. Based upon their observations, analysis and experience, our ancestors used many plants for medicinal purposes and thus their efforts need to be supported by scientific evidence. Jasminum grandiflorum Linn. is one of such important plants. It has been extensively used by the tribes all over India to treat different diseases which mainly include body pains, toothache, stomach ache, ulcers, and sexual impotency. Chemistry of the plant revealed the presence of mainly secoiridoids, terpenoids, flavonoids and tannins. Not much scientific support was given to the folklore claims for this plant but some of its traditional uses were investigated like spasmolytic, wound healing, antimicrobial, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, antiulcer and antioxidant activities. This article is the review of research works done on the plant Jasminum grandiflorum Linn. to date. As a part of it the local names, morphology, traditional claims, chemistry and pharmacological activities have been discussed.

RESUMO

Background: Wound healing is an important process in regeneration of the lost tissue, it involves various steps. Varieties of substances are known to interact in the healing process, some of the plant products are found to be beneficial. Jasmine leaves are mentioned to have healing effect in ancient literature. Hence the study was carried out to evaluate the wound healing effect by assessing the histopathological parameters. Methods: The study was done in the albino rats which were divided into various groups. The histopathological parameters were studied at regular intervals. Results: It was found that jasmine paste improved the wound healing process at all the stages. Conclusion: Jasminum grandiflorum has wound healing effect in albino rats.

Background: Wound is a common process leading to inflammation and healing process. Jasminum grandiflorum is a plant widely grown in Karnataka and is mention in ancient medical systems to promote healing. So the study was taken up to confirm the anti-inflammatory effect of the plant. Methods: Excision and incision wound models in albino rats were used to study the wound healing effect. It was mainly studied by the degree of epithelisation at various intervals and compared with control group. The strength of the wound was assessed by its wound breaking strength at the end. Results: It was found that jasmine extract increased the degree of epithelisation and thus promoting wound healing. It was also found that the wound breaking strength was more in the drug treated group compared to normal. Conclusions: Jasminum grandiflorum leaf extract is known to have wound healing property.
