RESUMO

Skin, the body’s largest organ, protects from deleterious environmental impacts (physical, chemical, microbiological) and is crucial for the maintenance of temperature, electrolyte and fluid balance and tactile sensation, it sets a boundary between the organism and the environment. Any change in the normal skin texture disturb the patient both mentally and physically. Psoriasis is a common, chronic, recurrent inflammatory disease of the skin, characterized by circumscribed, erythematous, dry, scaly plaques of varying sizes. The severity of psoriasis is found to be ever fluctuating. Individuals are likely to cycle between differing levels of severity throughout lifetime. The course of the disease is punctuated by spontaneous flare-ups and remissions. Psoriasis being a chronic and often disfiguring condition, cause a marked impairment in quality of life. There is no certain cure for this disease. Ayurvedic diagnosis is as Vatha-Kapha predominant Mahakushta namely Sidhma kushta. Here an effort to treat a 13-year-old child having plaque psoriasis by Samsodhana and Samsamana therapy. Initially 6 days Virechana was performed and then followed by Samsamana with intermittent Virechana karma. PASI score is used to assess the severity of psoriatic lesions and the patient’s response to treatment. PASI score before the treatment was found to be 15.7 which became 0 at the end of the treatment. This case report showed the treatment modalities done in the patient obtained great result with no recurrence in the last 1.5 years.

RESUMO

Psoriasis is a chronic, multisystem inflammatory disease with predominantly skin and joint involvement. In Ayurveda all skin diseases are described under the umbrella of Kushtha. Ayurvedic system of medicine is giving good results in management of Psoriasis. Repeated Samshodhana (purificatory therapies) along with Samshamana (palliative therapies) is the main line of treatment if skin diseases in Ayurveda. Three assessments were taken before and after treatment on scoring of Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), Psoriasis Disability Index (PDI) and PASI score. Score of the patient was 63.3% before treatment and 13.3% after treatment and 3.3% after follow up on Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), 44.4% before treatment and 15.5% after treatment and 5.3% after follow up on Psoriasis Disability Index (PDI) and 24.5% before treatment, 5.1% after treatment and 1.2% after follow up in PASI (Psoriasis Area and Severity Index). This case study wants to substantiate the effectiveness of Ayurvedic treatment in the management of Plaque psoriasis.

RESUMO

Visphota kushta (blistering skin disease) is characterized by transparent blisters with thin skin covering.Management of Visphota Kushta in Ayurveda is rarely reported. The case reported here showed significant regression in the condition in short span of time and could completely stop the use of anti histamines and corticosteroids. A 32 year old female, presented with complaints of blisters over both upperand lower extremities associated with edema, burning sensation, pain, severe itching and oozing sincethree months. The treatments were given after ascertaining the involved dosha and the samprapti(pathogenesis). The involved dosha were and Pitta (metabolic factor) and Kapha (binding factor) dosha.Pitta - kapha dosha hara line of treatment was adopted in terms of mitigating and purificatory therapy. Ithelped in arresting the progression of the condition and a complete healing of blisters. Photographs weretaken during and after the treatment for records. The blister completely resolved and the skin wasnormal as before. The patient was back to her normal routine with no signs of relapse. The outcome wasa combined effect of both shamana and shodhana chikitsa along with pathya sevana.© 2018 Transdisciplinary University, Bangalore and World Ayurveda Foundation. RESUMO

Skin is one of the five 慓yanindriyas as described in Ayurvedic texts. It is responsible for 慡parsh Gyan or touch sensation; therefore it plays a great role in physical and mental health of any individual. It is most affected by fungal infections. According to modern science the fungal infections caused by dermatophytes are called as dermatophytosis. Tinea or Ringworm infection presents with of the circular skin lesions with elevated edges. In Ayurveda, all skin diseases have been discussed under the broad heading of Kushta. The study comprised of a series of 10 patients of Mandal kushta. The patients were selected from OPD and IPD of Kayachikitsa of Sri Krishna Ayurvedic Medical College, Varanasi. In the present study a clinical trial is done with trial drug Panchtiktkta ghrit gugglu and external application of Shirisadi lepa. Panchtiktkta ghrit gugglu is cited from Bhaishajya Ratnavali and Shirisadi lepa is cited from Charak Samhita. Panchtiktkta ghrit gugglu is given in a dose of 2 tablets 3times in a day with the combination of external application of Shirisadi lepa twice in a day for 45 days. Three follow ups with duration of 15 days were done. A remarkable changes were found in various sign and symptoms based on assessment criteria which are Kandu (itching), Sotha (inflammation), Srava (secretions), Vivarnata (discolouration) and Vrana (lesion). It was indeed a proper and suitable approach for this chronic skin disorder as the patients of Mandal Kustha combat a lot for this dreadful disease as it persists for long time and spread rapidly.

RESUMO

Background: Panchavalkala Choorna is a poly herbal compound made from the barks of five major drugs from the Ficus family. It is widely quoted as an effective remedy in various skin disorders explained under the wide spectrum of Kushta (skin disorders), mentioned in Ayurvedic classics. However, till date no published data is available on the analytical profile of this compound formulation. The present study was aimed to standardize and develop the pharmacognostical and phytochemical profile of Panchavalkala Choorna. The compund was prepared as per classical methods and analytical findings were systematically recorded. The samples were subjected to organoleptic analysis, physicochemical analysis and High performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) examination by optimizing the solvent systems. Pharmacognostical profile of Panchavalkala Choorna was established. Loss on drying, Specific gravity, Viscosity and Refractive index, Iodine value, Acid value and Saponification value of Panchavalkala Choorna were found within prescribed limits. HPTLC fingerprinting profile of ST revealed 6 spots at 254 nm and 4 spots at 366 nm. Two spots were merging in both the long and short UV, showing common characters in both the wavelengths.

RESUMO

Background: Kushta is an important solid dosage form of Unani system of medicine used to treat various ailments. Very small particle size of kushta is responsible for its rapid absorption in body leading to instant therapeutic actions. Kushta tutia (KT) is one such renowned formulation used by hakims for successful management of various disorders. However, there is lack of scientific work on KT. Objectives: The present study was performed to evaluate KT physicochemically by testifying it on classical tests along with modern scientific techniques. Materials and Methods: Tutia was first detoxified as per classical literature. It was triturated with water and dried, afterwards subjected to calcination in furnace rather than cow dung cakes due to isolation of material being heated and better temperature control. Finished product was evaluated for physicochemical characteristics including preliminary tests mentioned in classical literature. Results: Floating and finger test were positive. Curd test showed no discoloration after 48 h. These findings indicate correct preparation of KT according to classical literature. Bulk density (0.96 ± 0.00 g/ml); tapped density (1.53 ± 0.00 g/ml); Hausner ratio (0.62 ± 0.00), compressibility index (37.52 ± 0.19%); loss of weight on drying (0.08 ± 0.00%); pH of 1 and 10% (5.20 ± 0.00) and 5.62 ± 0.00, respectively); total ash, acid insoluble ash, and water soluble ash values 95.75 ± 0.09, 6.57 ± 0.02, and 45.02 ± 0.20%, respectively; and extractive values 0.85 ± 0.02% were reported in KT. Conclusion: Since this work has not been reported earlier, the results obtained could be considered as the standard for KT for future studies.
