RESUMO
ABSTRACT Mining activity generates transformations in aquatic ecosystems and adjacent areas, as well as the creation of land depressions or "lagoons" that act as water reservoirs where aquatic communities develop, including the phytoperiphyton. Considering the role of this community in these environments, the purpose of this research was to study the phytoperiphytic community present in lagoons generated by mining processes, in the San Juan basin, Chocó (Colombia). Lagoons with different formation times were selected: 1-5 years, 5-10 years and 10-15 years; three lagoons for each time period. Physical and chemical variables were measured, and phytoperiphyton was collected, using an 8cm2 quadrant, obtaining a scraping area of 120cm2. The community was composed of six divisions, nine classes, 16 orders, 24 families and 33 genera, for a total density of 13108 org/cm2. The lagoons of 10-15 years presented the highest density, with Bacillariophytes as the most representative in all the studied lagoons, both in density and richness. There were differences in density between lagoons, but not in specific richness and diversity. Similarity values indicate that the lagoons have little variability in their phytoperiphytic communities. Conductivity and dissolved total solids are the variables with the greatest variation throughout the study; there are significant differences between lagoons for the variables dissolved oxygen, pH and alkalinity (p<0.05). This study constitutes a baseline for understanding the ecological dynamics of lentic environments generated by mining processes and on the development of phytoperiphytic communities in them.
RESUMEN La actividad minera genera transformaciones en los ecosistemas acuáticos y zonas adyacentes y, entre ellas, se crean depresiones en el terreno o "lagunas", que actúan como reservorios de agua, en los que se desarrollan comunidades acuáticas, como el fitoperifíton. Considerando el papel de esta comunidad en estos ambientes, el propósito de esta investigación fue estudiar la comunidad fitoperifítica presente en lagunas generadas por procesos de extracción minera, en la cuenca del San Juan, Chocó (Colombia). Se seleccionaron lagunas con diferente tiempo de formación: 1-5 años, 5-10 años y 10-15 años; tres lagunas por cada periodo de tiempo. Se midieron variables físicas y químicas y se colectó fitoperifíton, utilizando un cuadrante de 8cm2, obteniéndose un área de raspado de 120cm2. La comunidad, se compuso de seis divisiones, nueve clases, 16 órdenes, 24 familias y 33 géneros, para una densidad total de 13108 org/cm2. Las lagunas de 10-15 años presentaron la mayor densidad con las Bacillariophytas, como las más representativas en todas las lagunas estudiadas, tanto en densidad como en riqueza. Existieron diferencias en densidad entre lagunas, pero no en la riqueza específica y diversidad. Los valores de similaridad indican que las lagunas presentan poca variabilidad en sus comunidades fitoperifíticas. La conductividad y los sólidos totales disueltos son las variables de mayor variación, a lo largo de estudio, existiendo diferencias significativas entre lagunas, para las variables oxígeno disuelto, pH y alcalinidad (p<0,05). Las variables pH y conductividad, se relacionaron positivamente con la densidad de algunos grupos fitoperifíticos. Este estudio, se constituye en una línea base para el conocimiento de la dinámica ecológica de los ambientes lénticos generados por los procesos mineros y sobre el desarrollo de las comunidades fitoperifíticas en ellos.

RESUMEN La ostra del mangle es una especie de gran importancia ecológica y comercial en muchos lugares del Caribe. En Bahía de Cispatá, Colombia, no obstante, representa el sustento económico de un importante grupo de pescadores se carece de planes de manejo que regulen su extracción. El objetivo del presente estudio fue el de establecer la estructura poblacional de Crassostrea rhizophorae en Bahía Cispatá, como insumo básico para la formulación futura de planes de manejo de la especie. Debido a las diferencias fenotípicas observadas entre los individuos de los lugares muestreados, se obtuvieron secuencias del gen COI, concluyendo que todos los individuos corresponden a la especie Crassostrea rhizophorae. Con base en las características morfológicas se diferenciaron dos poblaciones, de las que no se evidenció coexistencia en una misma estación de muestreo. A través del programa FiSAT se evaluaron los principales parámetros poblacionales, encontrando que los individuos de la población con concha delgada crecen a mayor velocidad alcanzando mayores tamaños que los individuos de la población de conchas más robustas y fuertes. No obstante, los individuos de concha delgada también presentaron una tasa de mortalidad más alta. Para las dos poblaciones la oferta alimentaria fue muy baja, lo cual pudo haber influido en la baja densidad poblacional encontrada durante 2015. Es necesario resaltar la importancia del recurso ostra en la zona y la ventaja que representa para los pescadores, los especímenes de concha más robusta, los cuales pueden ser mantenidos por más tiempo sin congelar que los de concha delgada.
ABSTRACT The mangrove oyster is a species of great ecological and commercial importance in many places in the Caribbean. In Bahía de Cispatá, Colombia, the oyster represents the economic support of an important group of fishermen lacks management plans for the extraction regulation. The objective of the present study was to establish the population structure of Crassostrea rhizophorae in Bahía Cispatá, as a basic input for the future formulation of management plans. Due to the morphological differences observed among the individuals of the sampled sites, sequences of the COI gene were obtained, concluding that all individuals correspond to the species Crassostrea rhizophorae. Based on the morphological differences, two populations were differentiated, which did not show coexistence in the same sampling station. Through the FiSAT program, the main population parameters were evaluated, finding that individuals of the population with thin shells grow at a faster rate, reaching greater sizes than individuals from the population of more robust and strong shells. However, individuals with thin shells also had higher mortality rates. For both populations, the food supply was very low, which may have influenced the low population density found during 2015. It is important to highlight the importance of this resource in the area and the advantage presented by the more robust oyster's specimens for fishermen since is that it allows them to have it to be stored for longer than the thin shell oyster.

Se analizó la composición y abundancia del zooplancton de la laguna El Morro en la isla de Margarita, Venezuela, durante el periodo de surgencia (marzo-mayo 2011) y de relajación (junio-agosto 2011). Las muestras fueron recolectadas en 6 estaciones de las diferentes zonas de la laguna. Se realizaron calados con una red de plancton de 333 µm durante 10 minutos. Se midió in situ la temperatura, salinidad y oxígeno disuelto, además de nutrientes. Se registraron valores medios de temperatura de 29.7 ºC, salinidad de 36 ups, oxígeno disuelto de 5.9 mg.L-1. La concentración de nutrientes fue baja (medias de 0.12; 0.04; 0.03 mg.L-1 para nitrato, nitrito y fosfato, respectivamente). Se detectaron diferencias significativas temporales con mayores registros en la temporada de relajación, mientras que espacialmente no mostró diferencias, a pesar que en las estaciones internas (Est. 4,5,6) se obtuvo mayor abundancia. Se identificaron quince grupos zooplanctónicos, determinándose nueve especies del grupo Copepoda, dos de Cladocera, una de Decapoda, Tunicada y Rotifera y diferentes formas larvarias de distintos taxa. Las larvas de crustáceos presentaron la abundancia media y relativa más alta (47738 ind.m-3 y 46.83%, respectivamente), seguido del copépodo Oithona nana (31740 ind.m-3 y 25.94%, respectivamente) y Paracalanus quasimodo (12958 ind.m-3 y 8.47%, respectivamente). Esta laguna involucra la estacionalidad surgencia-relajación como un efecto importante en la distribución y abundancia del zooplancton.
The composition and abundance of the zooplankton of El Morro lagoon on the island of Margarita, Venezuela, during the upwelling period (March-May 2011) and relaxation (June-August 2011) were analyzed. Samples were collected at 6 stations in different areas of the lagoon. Sampling was performed with a 333 μm plankton net for 10 minutes. Water Temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen were measured in situ, in addition to nutrients. Average water temperature values of 29.7 °C, a salinity of 36 ups, and dissolved oxygen of 5.9 mg.L-1 were found. The concentration of nutrients was low (averages of 0.12, 0.04, 0.03 mg.L-1 for nitrate, nitrite and phosphate, respectively). Significant seasonal differences were detected with greater records in the relaxation season, whereas spatially did not show differences, although in the internal stations a greater abundance was recorded. Fifteen zooplankton groups were identified, identifying nine species of Copepoda, two of Cladocera, one of Decapoda, Tunicada and Rotifera and different larval forms of different taxa. Crustacean larvae showed the highest average and relative abundance (47738 ind.m-3 y 46.83%, respectively), followed by copepod O. nana (31740 ind.m-3 and 25.94%, respectively) and P. quasimodo (12958 ind.m-3 and 8.47%, respectively). This lagoon involves the emergence-relaxation seasonality as an important effect on the distribution and abundance of zooplankton.

Bioluminescent bays and lagoons are unique natural environments and popular tourist attractions. However, the bioluminescence in many of these water bodies has declined, principally due to anthropogenic activities. In the Caribbean, the bioluminescence in these bays and lagoons is mostly produced by the dinoflagellate Pyrodinium bahamense var. bahamense. Laguna Grande is one of the three year-round bioluminescent water bodies in Puerto Rico that are known to remain but P. bahamense var. bahamense density fluctuations have not been studied. In this study we describe water quality parameters and density fluctuations of the most common dinoflagellates in Laguna Grande, P. bahamense var. bahamense and Ceratium furca, over a three-year period. For this, three sampling stations were established in Laguna Grande from which water samples were collected in triplicate and analyzed for temperature, phosphates, nitrates, salinity, water transparency, fluorescence, and dinoflagellate densities, at the water surface and at 2m depth, from May 2003 to May 2006. The results showed a density fluctuation pattern for P. bahamense var. bahamense, where higher densities were observed mainly from April to September, and lower densities from October to February. Density fluctuations of C. furca were more erratic and a repetitive pattern was not observed. Densities of P. bahamense var. bahamense ranged from 0.48 to 90 978 cells/L and densities of C. furca ranged from 0 to 11 200 cells/L. The mean population density throughout the sampling period was significantly higher in P. bahamense var. bahamense (mean=18 958.5 cells/L) than in C. furca (mean=2 601.9 cells/L). Population densities of P. bahamense var. bahamense were negatively correlated with C. furca densities during the first year of sampling; however, they were positively correlated during the third year. Non-significant differences between surface and 2m depth samples were observed for temperature, phosphates, nitrates, salinity, fluorescence, and densities of P. bahamense var. bahamense and C. furca, suggesting a vertically mixed water column. Water transparency was positively correlated with salinity and negatively correlated with fluorescence. Fluorescence was negatively correlated with salinity. The mean population densities of P. bahamense var. bahamense and C. furca observed in this study were within the range of previous reports in other bioluminescent water bodies in Puerto Rico and Florida, USA. In order to conserve the continuous P. bahamense var. bahamense populations in Laguna Grande, as well as its bioluminescence, it is recommended to maintain the existing water flow levels in the 1.5km long inlet/outlet channel; to maintain unpolluted water quality parameters within the bay, the hydrographical basin and adjacent waters, and to preserve mangrove communities within the basin and adjacent areas. Results of this study may help to develop management plans aiming to conserve P. bahamense, its bioluminescence and the lagoon attraction.
Este estudio describe parámetros de calidad de agua y fluctuaciones en la densidad poblacional de Pyrodinium bahamense Plate 1906 y Ceratium furca (Ehrenberg) Claparède & Lachmann 1859, los dos dinoflagelados más abundantes en las bahías y lagunas bioluminiscentes de Puerto Rico, durante un periodo de tres años, en Laguna Grande, Puerto Rico. En P. bahamense se observó un patrón de densidad poblacional, donde se bservaron las densidades más altas mayormente desde abril hasta septiembre y las más bajas desde octubre hasta febrero. En C. furca las fluctuaciones en densidad fueron más erráticas y no se observó un patrón repetitivo. La densidad poblacional promedio de P. bahamense (media=18 958.5 células/L) fue significantemente mayor que la de C. furca (media=2 601.9 células/L). No se encontraron diferencias significantes entre las muestras de superficie y las de 2m de profundidad para temperatura, fosfatos, nitratos, salinidad, fluorescencia, y las densidades de P. bahamense y C. furca, lo que sugiere que la columna de agua está mezclada verticalmente. La densidad poblacional media de P. bahamense y C. furca en Laguna Grande está dentro del rango de las densidades que han sido reportadas para otras lagunas bioluminiscentes en Puerto Rico y Florida, EE.UU.

The maintenance of the freshwater mussels' community in lakes is determined by abiotic factors at the local scale and at regional scale by interspecific relations between the larvae of bivalves and fish host. Whereas the distribution pattern at local scale, our goal was to understand the abundance and community composition of bivalves and relate the environmental agents structuring this community. We sampled 20 lakes in the floodplain of the Cuiabá River using a standardized method of sampling. To evaluate the effect of environment on the community we applied multivariate inferential analyses. We found 1.143 individuals alive belonging into six species distributed at the family Hyriidae, Mycetopodidae, Sphaeridae and Corbiculidae. The results showed that in the Pantanal the bivalve assemblage structure is influenced locally by organic matter and particle size, variables that reflect the intense interactions between water-sediment. However it is important to emphasize that these environmental characteristics are the result of the dynamics of this system which is dependent on the flood pulse, a regional factor.
A manutenção da comunidade de bivalves límnicos em lagos é determinada por fatores abióticos em escala local e em escala regional pelas relações interespecíficas entre as larvas do bivalve e o peixe hospedeiro. Considerando o padrão de distiribuição em escala local, nosso objetivo foi conhecer a abundância e a composição da comunidade de bivalves e relacionar os agentes de estruturação desta comunidade. Foram amostrados 20 lagos na planície de inundação do rio Cuiabá usando método padronizado de amostragem. Para avaliar o efeito dos fatores abióticos sobre a comunidade aplicamos análises multivariadas inferenciais. Encontramos 1.143 indivíduos vivos, distribuidos em seis espécies pertencentes às famílias Hyriidae, Mycetopodidae, Sphaeridae e Corbiculidae. Os resultados demonstraram que no Pantanal, a estrutura da assembléia de bivalves é influenciada localmente pela matéria orgânica e granulometria, variáveis que refletem as intensas interações entre água-sedimento. No entanto é importante ressaltar que tais características ambientais são resultantes da dinâmica deste sistema o qual é dependente do pulso de inundação periódico, um fator de escala regional.

Temporal coherence (i.e., the degree of synchronicity of a given variable among ecological units within a predefined space) has been shown for several limnological features among temperate lakes, allowing predictions about the structure and function of ecosystems. However, there is little evidence of temporal coherence among tropical aquatic systems, where the climatic variability among seasons is less pronounced. Here, we used data from long-term monitoring of physical, chemical and biological variables to test the degree of temporal coherence among 18 tropical coastal lagoons. The water temperature and chlorophyll-a concentration had the highest and lowest temporal coherence among the lagoons, respectively, whereas the salinity and water colour had intermediate temporal coherence. The regional climactic factors were the main factors responsible for the coherence patterns in the water temperature and water colour, whereas the landscape position and morphometric characteristics explained much of the variation of the salinity and water colour among the lagoons. These results indicate that both local (lagoon morphometry) and regional (precipitation, air temperature) factors regulate the physical and chemical conditions of coastal lagoons by adjusting the terrestrial and marine subsidies at a landscape-scale. On the other hand, the chlorophyll-a concentration appears to be primarily regulated by specific local conditions resulting in a weak temporal coherence among the ecosystems. We concluded that temporal coherence in tropical ecosystems is possible, at least for some environmental features, and should be evaluated for other tropical ecosystems. Our results also reinforce that aquatic ecosystems should be studied more broadly to accomplish a full understanding of their structure and function.
A coerência temporal (i.e., o nível de sincronismo de uma dada variável ecológica entre unidades ecológicas) tem sido demonstrada para uma vasta gama de variáveis limnológicas em lagos de clima temperado, permitindo que predições sobre a estrutura e o funcionamento destes ecossistemas sejam realizadas. Entretanto, há pouca evidência da coerência temporal de variáveis limnológicas entre ecossistemas aquáticos tropicais, onde a variação climática é menos pronunciada entre as estações do ano. Neste estudo, utilizamos dados de longa duração do monitoramento de variáveis físicas, químicas e biológicas para testar a ocorrência de coerência temporal entre 18 lagoas costeiras tropicais. A temperatura da água e a concentração de clorofila-a apresentaram, respectivamente, a maior e a menor coerência temporal entre as lagoas, enquanto que a salinidade e a coloração da água apresentaram padrões intermediários. Fatores climáticos regionais foram os principais fatores responsáveis pelos padrões de coerência da temperatura e coloração da água, enquanto que a orientação em relação ao mar e as características morfométricas das lagoas explicaram boa parte da variação da salinidade e da coloração da água entre as lagoas. Estes resultados indicam que tanto fatores locais (morfometria) quanto regionais (precipitação, temperatura do ar) regulam as condições físicas e químicas das lagoas costeiras pela contribuição dos ecossistemas terrestre e marinho em uma escala da paisagem. Por outro lado, a concentração de clorofila-a é aparentemente limitada por condições locais específicas, resultando em um fraco padrão de coerência temporal entre as lagoas. Concluímos que a coerência temporal em ecossistemas tropicais é possível, pelo menos para algumas variáveis ambientais, e deve ser avaliada para outros ecossistemas. Nossos resultados também reforçam a ideia que ecossistemas aquáticos devem ser estudados em uma perspectiva mais ampla (e.g. de bacia de drenagem) para o completo entendimento da sua estrutura e funcionamento.
RESUMO
El objetivo principal de esta investigación fue evaluar la Estación de Tratamiento de Aguas Residuales (ETAR) de Ilha Solteira (SP) en relación a su eficiencia, acumulación de lodos y los posibles efectos en la salud pública producidos por la calidad del efluente final. La investigación consistió en el estudio batimétrico de las lagunas de estabilización facultativas primarias y un monitoreo de 24 horas consecutivas en el que se caracterizó los afluentes; los efluentes; las condiciones físicas de la ETAR y se diagnosticó el comportamiento de la Estación en relación al tratamiento de las aguas residuales. Se determinó que pese a que la carga orgánica efluente se encontró dentro de los rangos recomendados, la eficiencia de remoción de la Demanda Bioquímica de Oxígeno de 78% estuvo muy próxima a la mínima permitida por la legislación brasilera vigente; la cantidad de Coliformes totales y fecales, así como las concentraciones de sólidos totales en el efluente sobrepasaron los valores permitidos; sin embargo, la concentración de sólidos sedimentables cumplió a cabalidad con la norma ambiental presentando valores menores a 1,0mL/L. Los resultados mostraron que la estación requiere control operacional y mantenimiento más efectivos. Se evidenció la necesidad de implementar un sistema de pos tratamiento que garantice la disminución de los impactos ambientales producidos por los efluentes y los riesgos a la salud pública tanto en la zona de descarga como aguas abajo del punto de vertimiento final.
The main objective of this research was to evaluate the situation of the Ilha Solteira'44;s (SP) Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in connection with its efficiency, sludge accumulation and possible effects on public health produced by the quality in the final effluent. The research consisted in the batimetric study of the facultative primary stabilization ponds and a 24 consecutive hours monitoring in which there were characterized the affluent, the effluents and the STP physical conditions, and the Station behavior in relation to the wastewater treatment was diagnosed. It was established that despite the fact that the effluent organic load was between the recommended levels, the Biochemical Oxygen Demand efficiency removal of 78% was very near to the minimum values allowed by the Brazilian current Legislation; the total and faecal Coliforms, and total solids concentrations at the effluent exceeded the permitted values. However, the settleable solids concentration achieved the environmental regulation with values lower than 1,0mL/L.The results indicated that the STP requires operational controls and more effective maintenance. It was showed the need to install a post treatment system that guarantees the reduction of the environmental impacts produced by the effluents and the public health risks in the discharge zone as well as in the downstream of the final dump point.

The epipelic algae of Balik lagoon and Uzun lagoon were investigated from May 2003 to December 2004. A total of 106 taxa were identified. Of these, 85 were found in Balik lagoon and 78 were found in Uzun lagoon. Water temperature of the lagoons ranged from 6.5 to 24.5oC during the sampling period. Conductivity, hardness, dissolved oxygen an pH values varied between 0.70 and 8.00 mS, 26.00 and 86.60 of, 3.50 and 9.00 mg l -1 and 7.82 and 8.70 respectively. Nitrite nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, chloride, phosphate phosphorus and sulphate concentrations in the water were also measured and ranged from 0.01 to 0.14, 0.01 to 0.24, 2.41 to 48.70, 0.01 to 0.12 and 54.00 to 104.40 mg l -1 respectively. Species richness (d), diversity (Shannon – Weaver, H’) and evennes ( J’) were calculated for epipelic algae and the findings showed similar oscillations throughout the research period. Cluster analyses and multidimensional scaling (MDS) revealed a similar distribution pattern of epipelic algal flora in both lagoons.

Mundaú and Manguaba Lagoons (9° 34' 38"-9° 45' 30" S and 35° 44' 00"-35° 58' 13" W) are considered the largest and most productive ones in the state of Alagoas and were studied with the purpose of identifying the existence of anthropic impacts. Samples were collected at 8 stations, during low tide and flooding in rainy and dry periods, using the "Van Dorn" bottle and plankton net. In total, 155 taxons were identified, with special emphasis on Bacillariophyta and Cyanophyta divisions. The most abundant species in Mundaú Lagoon was Skeletonema cf. costatum, and in the Manguaba Lagoon, Cyclotella meneghiniana, Microcystis aeruginosa and Anabaena spiroides. The diversity ranged from 0.17 bits cell/L to 4.81 bits cell/L. The predominance of freshwater species (51%), evidenced higher influence of the limnetic flow on the two environments studied. The high values related to the phytoplanktonic density characterize the lagoons as strongly impacted environments, indicating the existence of eutrophic conditions in most of the studied stations.
As lagunas Mundaú e Manguaba (9° 34' 38"-9° 45' 30" S e 35° 44' 00"-35° 58' 13" W) são consideradas as maiores e mais produtivas do Estado de Alagoas e foram estudadas com o objetivo de identificar a existência de impactos antrópicos, nos períodos chuvoso e seco, com base na composição, diversidade e densidade fitoplanctônica. Coletas de material fitoplanctônico foram realizadas em 8 estações fixas, durante maré vazante e enchente nos períodos chuvoso e seco. As amostras foram coletadas com garrafa de "Van Dorn" e rede de plâncton. Foram identificados 155 táxons destacando-se as divisões Bacillariophyta e Cyanophyta. A espécie mais abundante na laguna Mundaú foi Skeletonema cf. costatum; na laguna Manguaba foram Cyclotella meneghiniana, Microcystis aeruginosa e Anabaena spiroides. A diversidade oscilou ente 0,17 bits cell/L e 4,81 bits cell/L. A predominância de espécies dulciaquícolas, (51%) evidenciou maior influência do fluxo limnético nos dois ambientes estudados. Os altos valores da densidade fitoplanctônica caracterizam as lagunas como ambientes fortemente impactados, indicando a existência de condições eutróficas na maioria das estações estudadas.

Physicochemical water quality index, a management tool for tropical-flooding lagoons. We propose ICA-L, a wetland physicochemical water quality index (WWQI), to be used as a management tool for seasonal-flooding lagoons in Palo verde National Park, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The goal is to preserve their natural role for native plants as well as migrants and local animal species. The index was developed in four steps: parameter selection, assignment of parameter weight, transformation of data to their corresponding sub indices and selection of an appropriate aggregation function. In this process, the following criteria were used as a reference: WQI from the National Sanitation Foundation, WQI for the Des Moines River, Escribano and De Frutos WQI, the international legislation on maximum acceptable concentration for different water quality variables, and the authors personal criteria. The index includes the following parameters: dissolved oxygen percent saturation, pH, nitrate concentration, total phosphorus concentration, chemical oxygen demand, concentration of suspended solids, electrical conductivity and temperature. The index sets itself to zero if the concentration of some toxic substance exceeds the maximum allowed limit. The adjustment values were based on "weights" defined in the National Sanitation Foundation Water quality Index (ICA-NSF). In this study, the weight of fecal coliforms count was excluded, the values of turbidity and the one for total solids were integrated into one (suspended solids) and a factor of 0.08 was assigned to the conductivity parameter. The sub indices associated to suspended solids were obtained from the quality of Kahler-Royer variation graph; the values for pH and the nitrate concentration from the graphs constructed for ICA-NSF. The percentage of dissolved oxygen saturation, in sites like irrigation channels, was evaluated directly from the quality variation graph constructed for ICANSF, whereas the same parameter for the flooding lagoons required an adjustment based on the optimal value for similar non contaminated ecosystems. The conductivity was evaluated from adjustments in the qualification functions commented by Escribano & De Frutos. Se creó un índice fisicoquímico de calidad del agua (ICA-L), para lagunas que se desbordan, el cual fue validado en el sector de riego de Tamarindo, y en una sección del sistema de lagunas del Parque Nacional Palo verde (Guanacaste, Costa Rica). El índice incluye las variables: porcentaje de saturación de oxígeno disuelto, pH, concentración de nitratos, concentración de fósforo total, demanda química de oxígeno, concentración de sólidos suspendidos, conductividad eléctrica y temperatura. El índice se fija automáticamente en cero si la concentración de alguna sustancia tóxica excede el máximo permitido. Los factores de ponderación se ajustaron con base en los pesos definidos en el Índice de Calidad de Agua de la National Sanitation Foundation (ICA-NSF), se excluyó el peso del conteo de coliformes fecales, se integró la ponderación de turbiedad y de sólidos totales una sola, de sólidos suspendidos, y se asignó a la conductividad un factor de 0.08. El índice per-mite evaluar la capacidad del agua de las lagunas tropicales de inundación de agua dulce, para lograr el sostenimiento de la biodiversidad y el desarrollo de la vida acuática, cuando surgen peligros por prácticas agropecuarias.

The growth, mortality and migration pattern of the population of Litopenaeus vannamei Boone 1931 in the Carretas-Pereyra coastal lagoon system, Mexico, were studied. The shrimp spatial distribution and abundance were analyzed in relation to salinity, water temperature, and substrate. A total of 2 669 shrimps was collected at 22 sites sampled monthly from March 2004 to August 2005. Juvenile shrimps of L. vannamei were present in the coastal lagoon system throughout the year, reaching densities from 0.001 to 0.302 ind/m². The estimated daily growth rate was 0.06 to 0.27 mm carapace length (CL). No significant seasonal differences were appreciated. Weekly total mortality (Z) was between 0.04 and 0.34. Recruits, juveniles and sub-adults displayed a bimodal distributional pattern regulated by the prevailing conditions during the dry season. The peak abundance of juvenile stages occurred in December-January and March-May. The abundance presented an inverse correlation with salinity (r=-0.42; p<0.05) and a positive correlation (r=0.44; p<0.05) with silt content. Se estudió el crecimiento, la mortalidad y el patrón de migración del camarón Litopenaeus vannamei Boone 1931 en el sistema lagunar costero Carretas Pereyra, México. La distribución espacial y la abundancia fueron analizadas con relación a la salinidad, temperatura y substrato. De marzo de 2004 a agosto de 2005 se recolectó un total de 2669 camarones con un muestreo mensual en 22 sitios. Los jóvenes se hallaron todo el año en el sistema lagunar costero, con densidades entre 0.001 y 0.302 ind/m². La tasa de crecimiento diaria fue de 0.06 a 0.27 mm longitud del cefalotórax (CL) y no se apreciaron diferencias significativas entre estaciones. La mortalidad total (Z) semanal estuvo entre 0.04 y 0.34. Reclutas, jóvenes y subadultos presentan un patrón de distribución bimodal regulado por las condiciones prevalecientes durante la estación de estío. Los valores máximos de abundancia de los estadios juveniles se presentan en diciembre-enero y marzo-mayo. La abundancia presentó una correlación significativa inversa con la salinidad (r=-0.42; p<0.05) y positiva (r=0.44; p<0.05) con el contenido de limo. No se distinguió una clara correlación entre la talla de emigración, la estación del año y la temperatura del agua.

As result of its biological and ecological strategies, Pseudupeneus grandisquamis is a dominant species in the demersal community of the Gulf of Tehuantepec, Mexico. Our main objective was to understand these strategies with respect to distribution, abundance and reproduction. We analyzed 5,175 individuals representing partial collections from five oceanographic expeditions between 1989 and 1990. It is a typical demersal marine species, with a wide distribution on the continental shelf. The highest abundance of P. grandisquamis occurs in March and November, around the 40 m isobath, facing the Superior-Inferior lake systems and Mar Muerto Lagoon. Reproduction occurred during all of the months studied, particularly from August to October, corresponding to the rainy season, when the salinity and temperature is lower. The presence of juveniles, principally in November and March, suggests a long period of recruitment; they are distributed mainly in the Superior-Inferior Lagoons, which serves as a nursery area where they remain until they are adults. The total female to male sex ratio was nearly 1:1 throughout the year. The maximum total length was 213 mm and the size at first maturity was 138 mm TL. The high abundance and reproduction occur when the gulf has a high level of ecological production, in accordance with the dynamics of the system, where the influence of coastal lagoons is important. Protection strategies for the area above the continental shelf of the Gulf of Tehuantepec are recommended for the estuary processes and for the reproduction and rearing of a large number of species, including P. grandisquamis.
Como resultado de sus estrategias biológicas y ecológicas, el pez Pseudupeneus grandisquamis es una especie dominante en la comunidad demersal del Golfo de Tehuantepec. Nuestro principal objetivo fue conocer estas estrategias con base en su distribución, abundancia y reproducción. Se analizaron un total de 5 175 individuos que forman parte de las recolectas de peces obtenidas en cinco cruceros oceanográficos realizados en el Golfo de Tehuantepec, México, entre 1989-1990. Es una especie demersal típicamente marina, con amplia distribución en la plataforma continental. La mayor abundancia de P. grandisquamis se presenta en marzo y noviembre, alrededor de la isobata de los 40 m y frente a los sistemas lagunares Superior-Inferior y Laguna del Mar Muerto. La reproducción de la especie se presenta durante todos los meses analizados, principalmente durante los meses de agosto a octubre, correspondiente a la época de lluvias. La presencia de jóvenes, principalmente en noviembre y marzo, sugiere un amplio periodo de reclutamiento durante estos meses cuya distribución se refleja principalmente en el área influenciada por las lagunas Superior-Inferior, que representa un área de crianza. La proporción sexual total hembras:machos fue prácticamente 1:1. La talla máxima en la región es de 213 mm y la talla de primera madurez es de 138 mm LT. La alta abundancia y reproducción se presentan cuando el golfo tiene alta producción, acorde con la dinámica del sistema, donde tiene gran relevancia la influencia de las lagunas costeras. Se sugiere aplicar estrategias de protección a las zonas sobre la plataforma continental del Golfo de Tehuantepec influenciadas por procesos estuarinos y que representan áreas de reproducción y crianza para un gran número de especies, entre las que se encuentra P. grandisquamis.

The aims of this research were to determine the main limiting nutrient to bacterial growth in Imboassica lagoon, southeastern Brazil, to estimate the percentage of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) available for bacterial growth, and to determine the bacterial growth efficiency (BGE) of natural assemblages. Bacterial growth and DOC consumption were determined in batch culture experiments, in which water samples were supplemented with nitrogen and phosphorus together or separately, or incubated without nutrient additions. When added together, N and P stimulated higher bacterial growth rates and production, as well as higher DOC consumption. The BGEs and DOC consumption rates were strongly dependent on the method used to determine bacterial production. The BGE ranged from 11 to 72%. However, only a minor fraction of bulk DOC was consumed by the planktonic bacteria (from 0.7 to 3.4%). The results suggest that low availability of phosphorus and nitrogen coupled with excess organic carbon was the main factor responsible for the relatively low bacterial utilization of DOC in Imboassica lagoon.
Os objetivos desta pesquisa foram: determinar o principal nutriente limitante ao crescimento bacteriano na lagoa Imboassica, estimar a porcentagem de Carbono Orgânico Dissolvido (COD) disponível para o crescimento bacteriano e determinar a Eficiência de Crescimento Bacteriano (ECB) da comunidade bacteriana. O crescimento bacteriano e o consumo de COD foram avaliados em experimentos de culturas de diluição, nos quais nitrogênio e fósforo foram adicionados às amostras de água, juntos ou separadamente, e um controle foi preparado sem adições de nutrientes. Quando adicionados juntos, N e P estimularam um maior crescimento e produção bacterianos, assim como maiores taxas de consumo de COD. ECB e taxas de consumo de COD foram fortemente dependentes do método utilizado para determinar a produção bacteriana. ECB variou de 11% a 72%, porém apenas uma pequena fração do COD total foi consumida pelas bactérias planctônicas (de 0,7% a 3,4%). Sugere-se que as baixas disponibilidades de fósforo e nitrogênio são os principais fatores responsáveis pela baixa utilização de COD pelas bactérias na lagoa Imboassica.
RESUMO
In order to evaluate the diversity and infestation level of Teredinidae wood-boring molluscs, ten satations were chosen along the coast of Rio de Janeiro State. Using five pine-wood panels in each station, it was possible to distinguish five areas according to species dominance. Ilha Grande Bay is characterized by the dominance of Lyrodus floridanus (Bartsch, 1922); Sepetiba Bay, by Bankia fimbriatula Moll & Roch, 1931, Tijuca Lagoon by Teredo navalis Linnaeus, 1758; Guanabara Bay by Notoredo knoxi (Bartsch, 1917) and Araruama Lagoon by Teredo furcifera Martens, 1894. Specific composition and dominance of these species were due mainly to abiotic factors such as salinity whereas infestation level was associated not only to salinity but also to other factors such as the quantity and quality of fouling, the presence of larval dispersion focus and the wood supply in each area.
