RESUMO

O duplo aborda o tema da duplicidade do eu. Traz na narrativa descrições psicopatológicas da síndrome de duplos subjetivos e da esquizofrenia numa época em que essas condições ainda não tinham sido descritas. Este artigo situa a obra literária na história da psiquiatria, ressaltando o pioneirismo de Fiodor Dostoiévski, sua forma de narrar o tema e como conseguiu tratar o tema de forma clínica.


The Double addresses the topic of duplicity of self. It presents psychopathological descriptions of the syndrome of subjective doubles and of schizophrenia at a time in which these conditions had not yet been described. This paper situates the book in the history of psychiatry, highlighting the pioneering spirit of Fyodor Dostoyevsky, his way of approaching this topic, and how he managed to address it in a clinical way.


Le Double porte sur le thème de la duplicité du moi. Il contient des descriptions psychopathologiques du syndrome des doubles subjectifs et de la schizophrénie à une époque où ces troubles n'avaient pas encore été décrits. Cet article traite de l'œuvre littéraire dans l'histoire de la psychiatrie et souligne l'esprit pionnier de Fiodor Dostoïevski, sa façon de développer le thème et comment traiter la question de façon clinique.


El Doble, de Dostoyevski aborda el tema de la duplicidad del yo. Trae, a la narrativa, descripciones psicopatológicas del síndrome de dobles subjetivos y de la esquizofrenia en una época en la que todavía no se habían descrito tales condiciones. En este artículo, se sitúa la obra literaria en la historia de la psiquiatría, resaltando el espíritu pionero de Fiódor Dostoyevski, su forma de narrar el tema y cómo logró abordar la cuestión de forma clínica.


Der Doppelgänger behandelt das Thema des doppelten Ichs. Das Werk enthält psychopathologische Beschreibungen des Syndroms des subjektiven Doppelgängers und der Schizophrenie zu einer Zeit, als diese Phänomene noch nicht beschrieben worden waren. Dieser Artikel ordnet das Werk in der Geschichte der Psychiatrie ein, unterstreicht den Pioniergeist von Fjodor Dostojewski, seine Art und Weise, das Thema wiederzugeben und wie er es schaffte, das Problem in klinischen Form zu behandeln.

RESUMO

Embora absolutamente pertinente, a relação entre texto e medicina ainda é pouco pesquisada no meio acadêmico brasileiro. Não obstante, é fato que toda prática médica é permeada de narrativas, quer sejam as dos pacientes, que contam aos médicos as histórias de suas doenças, quer as dos médicos, que recontam essas histórias de acordo com modelos científicos aprendidos e com sua experiência clínica. Inspirado na Narrative-Based Medicine, campo teórico já consolidado no meio anglófono, e em algumas teorias provenientes dos Estudos Literários e das Ciências Sociais, este artigo busca discutir, introdutoriamente, algumas possibilidades para a consolidação de um estudo interdisciplinar das narrativas relacionadas à área médica no âmbito acadêmico brasileiro.


Although absolutely relevant, the research about the relationship between text and medicine is not well fund within the Brazilian academy yet. Nevertheless, the fact is that the medical practice is permeated with narratives, whether those by patients, who tell the doctors the stories of their diseases, whether those by physicians, who recount these stories according to their consolidated scientific models and to their clinic experience. Inspired by the theoretical field called Narrative-Based Medicine, which is already well established within the Anglophone academic environment, and by some theories from the Literary Studies and the Social Sciences, this article aims to introductorily discuss some possibilities for the consolidation of an interdisciplinary study of the medical narratives in Brazil.


Aunque absolutamente relevante, la relación entre texto y medicina es todavía objeto de poca investigación en el medio académico brasileño. Sin embargo, es un hecho que toda la práctica médica tiene sus relatos, ya se trate de pacientes que cuentan las historias clínicas de sus enfermedades a los médicos, o de los médicos, que cuentan estas historias de acuerdo a sus modelos científicos aprendidos y de su experiencia clínica. Inspirado por la Narrative-Based Medicine, campo teórico ya establecido en lengua inglesa, y por algunas teorías que vienen de los Estudios Literarios y de las Ciencias Sociales, este artículo pretende discutir, introductoriamente, algunas posibilidades para la consolidación de un estudio interdisciplinario de las narrativas médicas en el ámbito académico brasileño.

Background: An online forum was designed for a literature and medicine selective in which undergraduate medical students discussed the poem The Send Off by Sian Hughes. The poem captures a mother’s anguish in aborting a child diagnosed with Down Syndrome. Objective: To analyze the dynamics of the online discussion and its contribution to meaning making, through issues discussed and strategies employed in relation to humanistic care. Method: A close textual analysis of the postings on the online forum was done. Data was coded for emerging themes using the grounded theory. Results: Students discussed issues in the poem in relation to the medical framework, specifically on Down Syndrome. The discussion further explored intra and interpersonal emotional and social implications related to Down Syndrome. Learners used cognitive strategies that required critical analysis of the form and content of the poem. They further employed these strategies in the analysis of peers’ postings. In the interaction with peers, learners drew on experiences and emotions to justify their stand. Conclusion: Online forums which use literary texts as stimuli provide the opportunity for medical students to broaden and deepen their understanding of human experience. The outcome reveals that learners engage in deeper approaches through sustained and interactive discussion with peers. Cognitive and social strategies within a literary framework foster intellectual and emotional understanding of the human condition. Transferable skills relevant to humanistic care that include observation, communication, reflection, critical thinking and professionalism can be nurtured through this approach to better equip the future doctor to provide holistic care.

RESUMO

A survey was conducted to investigate the situation of English works reading activities among medical students and their attitude to the medical contents in English works.The result showed that medical students support the setting-up of literature and medicine course and it was believed that medicine in literature would be helpful to improve the quality of medical humanity education.

RESUMO

"Medicine as an art" implies that there is something in medicine beyond the limit of science The practice of medicine is far more than the simple application of scientific principles to a particular biologic aberration The communication between a doctor and a patient is the core component of medical practice but little attention has been generally drawn to it. This study shows three types of doctor's reading on 'patient' as an alternative model to see the doctor-patient communication on the basis of the concept of 'patient as a text' and Bakhtin's narrative theory They are monologic dialogic and discontinuous readings In the monologic reading the doctor has one-sidedly the whole power in communication and it reflects only the doctor's point of view The doctor mainly concerns for the disease and its treatment In the dialogic reading the power of doctor-patient is shared and their views are reflected each other The doctor should consider the patient as a human and understand his social and psychological surroundings If the patient refuses to be treated especially in the case of terminal cancer patient he has nothing to do with his doctor Therefore the discontinuous reading can be applied and in result no communication takes place between them. To evaluate the proposed types of the doctor's reading on patient the three types can be applied to the scene of doctor-patient meeting in the novels The meetings of lieutenant Sung and medical officers in Sending Back by Jung-In Suh are in accordance with the type of monologic reading In Wan-Seo Park's Three Days in the Fall the type of dialogic reading can be applied to that of the doctor I's lives with her patients In Yong-Moon Chun's The Days of Dead Doctors the type of discontinuous reading can be applied to the events between Haeng-Oh Kim and doctors in ICU And the 3 parts of The Heavens of Your Own by Chung-Joon Yi all of reading types can be equal to those of the hero whose figure and relationship with Sorok Island have changed throughout the work. The doctors should have abundant experiences of life to make the dialogic reading possible The dialogic reading can be realized in its true sense only if they see the patient not as a disease but as a man and only if they make efforts to understand his circumstances
