RESUMO

@#Introduction: Limited studies have examined the dietary intake pattern of Malaysian endurance athletes. Differences in the types of foods consumed between Malaysian and Western population leads to varying nutritional intake values. This study aimed to characterise the dietary intake of Malaysian endurance athletes as compared to sports nutrition recommendations, and to determine the associations between participants’ backgrounds and macronutrients intake status. Methods: A total of 85 endurance-trained Malaysian athletes participated in a cross-sectional study. Dietary intake for three days throughout the training season was evaluated using 24-hour dietary recall. The macronutrients and micronutrients intakes were compared to the nutritional recommendation for athletes and the Recommended Nutrient Intakes (RNI), respectively. The food serving size was compared to the Malaysian Food Pyramid 2020. Results: Of all participants, 51% met the minimum recommendations for carbohydrate (CHO) intake (6g/ kg/day). For protein intake, 88% of participants had surpassed the lower limit of 1.2g/kg/day. The lower limit of fat intake (20% of total daily energy intake) was met by 99% of the participants. Most of the participants had a suboptimal intake of calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin E, while all had inadequate vitamin D intake. The athletes’ institution was significantly associated with the CHO intake status. Also, the athletes’ institution and the highest education level were significantly associated with the protein intake status. Conclusion: Athletes who practised Asian-based diets were able to achieve the energy, protein, and fat intake recommendations. However, there was a suboptimal intake of the CHO and micronutrients as compared to the recommendations.

RESUMO

Abstract Hyperhydricity is a serious physiological disorder and affects In vitro propagation of many plants and as well of Salvia santolinifolia. The donor material to initiate the in vitro culture was the callus taken from the in vitro shoots produced on Murashig and Skoogs (MS) medium at 4.0 mg/l BA. This callus formed numerous hyperhydric shoots on culturing upon the medium of the same composition. The aim was to systematically evaluate the effect of cytokinins (Benzyladnine (BA) and N6-(-2-isopentenyl) adenine (2iP), culture vessels magnitude, medium solidification, source of nitrogen and calcium chloride for the alleviation of hyperhydricity. In the tissue cultures of S. santolinifolia BA and 2iP induced severe hyperhydricity, when other factors i.e. culture vessels magnitude and a suitable concentration of agar, ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3), potassium nitrate (KNO3) & calcium chloride (CaCl2.2H2O) were not optimized. After 30 days' culture, we observed 83.82% hyperhydric shoots at increased level (1.5 mg/l 2iP) and 81.59% at decreased levels (1.0 mg/l 2iP). On the other hand, hyperhydricity percentage at decreased (0.4%) and at increased (0.8%) levels of agar were 72.37% and 39.08%, respectively. MS medium modification with NH4NO3 (412 mg/l), KNO3 (475 mg/l) and CaCl2.2H2O (880 mg/l) was found the best medium to reduced hyperhydricity (23.6%).

Abstract: Background The diet is an important strategy for glycemic control as well as reducing/eliminating the risk of developing diabetes. Objective This article evaluated the consumption of macronutrients and micronutrients of pre-diabetic individuals from Santa Cruz do Sul, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil. Method The nutrients intake was determined in the DietWin® program and the evaluation of the prevalence of adequacy macronutrients was classified according to Guidelines of the Brazilian Society of Diabetes and the evaluation of inadequacy of the micronutrients intake by Dietary Reference Intake were used. Results The pre-diabetic individuals had excessive protein and total fat intake (28.1% and 31.6%, respectively), as well as saturated fatty acids and cholesterol (91.2% and 35.1%, respectively). The fibers intake in this population showed an inadequacy of 93.0%. Considering the micronutrients intakes, vitamin D, calcium and selenium presented an insufficiency greater than 80.0%. Conclusion The usual diet of pre-diabetic individuals showed to be excessive for proteins and total fats, which associated with excessive consumption of saturated fatty acids and cholesterol, can increase cardiovascular risk. RESUMO

Erectile dysfunction (ED), characterized by a man’s constant or recurrent disability to obtain and/or maintain penile erection sufficient to achieve and complete satisfactory sexual intercourse, is a common ailment. Its incidence and prevalence increases with age. ED is caused by several factors -psychological factors, organic factors, and metabolic factors. ED may also be iatrogenic and related to some drugs, pelvic surgery, or radiotherapy. The main etiology is vascular in nature, with risk factors that are common to other cardiovascular diseases. Several drugs, mechanical and prosthetic devices, and surgical procedures are used to alleviate ED. Lifestyle modulation is increasingly being added as first-line treatments for ED. These include lack of physical activity and cigarette smoking. Obesity and an unhealthy quality of diet are also lifestyles that affect ED. This manuscript narratively reviews the impact of excessive caloric intake, various dietary ingredients, and special diets on ED.

RESUMO

@#Introduction: Previous studies have established an association between 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) taster and dietary intake. However, those studies mostly emphasised on macronutrients. The present study examined the dietary intake, including macro- and micronutrients, and caries experience among university students according to their PROP taster status. Methods: A total of 158 university students participated in this study. PROP taster status was determined using filter paper method. Dietary intake was collected using 24-hour diet recall method. Oral health examination was conducted to determine dental caries experience. Results: The results showed that majority of subjects were supertasters. No significant differences (p>0.05) were found in the macronutrient intakes among supertasters, medium tasters, and non-tasters. Significant differences (p<0.05) were found in the intakes of micronutrients, namely pantothenic acid, vitamin D, magnesium, manganese, and fluoride. There were no significant differences among group tasters in the dental caries experience scores of decayed (D), missing (M), and filled (F) teeth. Conclusion: In general, this study indicated that all group tasters had no difference in macronutrients intake and caries experience, but supertasters had significantly lower intakes of some micronutrients as compared to non-tasters and medium tasters. This suggested that PROP taster status could have some influence on micronutrient intakes.

RESUMO

Root deformation (RD) caused by errors in the pricking out process are irreversible and very difficult to detect in container-grown seedlings at the time of planting in the field. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of RD on leaf gas exchange, growth, biomass allocation and mineral nutrition of G. americana seedlings during the recovery phase after soil flooding. Four-months-old seedlings, with and without RD, were flooded for 42 days and their recovery was evaluated 28 days after soil drainage. There were no significant interactions between RD and soil flooding for all leaf gas exchange, growth and mineral nutrition after soil drainage, with the exception of leaf P concentrations. In plants with no RD, the P concentration in leaves of non-flooded plants was significantly higher than that of plants with RD. Soil flooding and RD did not influence leaf or root N concentrations or whole-plant N content. RD increased the K concentration in the roots, but not in the leaves. Changes in the nutrient concentrations in leaves and roots indicate that RD may affect physiological performance of seedlings after planting in the field.

ABSTRACT: In micropropagation, potassium nitrate (KNO3), an ACS reagent grade chemical, used in the preparation of growing mediums is expensive and its procurement depends on bureaucratic procedures, as it is controlled by the Brazilian Army. This research to assessed the effect of replacing the ACS KNO3 for a commercially available fertilizer (KNO3- based) on the micropropagation of the prickly pear cactus (Opuntia stricta (Haw.) Haw. cv. Elephant Ear. Treatments used six different fertilizer concentrations (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 and 2.5 g L-1) and a control consisting of 1.9 g L-1 KNO3, as shown in the MS salts. The survival, size and number of sprouts and the value of fresh biomass were evaluated. After seedling acclimation, we assessed the survival, number of sprouts, length, and number of roots, racket formation, average fresh biomass mass, macronutrient absorption and morphological changes of the seedlings. Explants inoculated with fertilizers at concentrations of 0.0; 2.0 and 2.5 g L-¹ did not grow. The response of explants at concentrations of 0.5 and 1.5 g L-1 of the fertilizer were the same as those developed in a KNO3 medium, and at a concentration of 1.0 g L-1, in all variables, the means were higher than those of the control medium. Therefore, it showed the feasibility of using fertilizers in the in vitro cultivation of the prickly pear cactus, which may remove bureaucratic barriers and reduce product costs by 99.12%.

Abstract Root deformation (RD) caused by errors in the pricking out process are irreversible and very difficult to detect in container-grown seedlings at the time of planting in the field.

Introduction: Sleep duration has been associated with metabolic syndrome and the main mediator between these factors seems to be diet, as the ingestion of kilocalories and macronutrients can vary according to the hours of sleep. Objective: to assess whether there is an association between sleep duration and energy and macronutrient intake in individuals with metabolic syndrome. Methods: this is a retrospective, cross-sectional study, with secondary data from medical records of adult patients, treated between the years 2013- 2020. Sleep duration was categorized into: short for ≤6 hours per night; suitable for 7-8 hours per night; and long for ≥9 hours per night; dietary data were obtained through the application and calculation of 24-hour dietary recalls. After adjustments for age and sex, the variables were evaluated using the Chi-Square test, with values p<0.05 being considered significant. Results: of the 375 people surveyed, nearly half reported a short sleep duration; however, no statistically significant associations were found between sleep duration and caloric intake (p=0.957), carbohydrates (p=0.975), proteins (p=0.865) and lipids (p=0.382). Discussion: the higher prevalence of short sleep duration found may be associated with some sociodemographic characteristics of the studied population, such as female gender, sedentary lifestyle, increasing age, low income and active occupation in the labor market. Conclusion: Individuals with metabolic syndrome seem to have less sleep time; however, the association of sleep with food consumption still requires further investigation.

Breast milk is the ideal food for infants and its benefits can be observed in the short and long term. In crisis situations, breastfeeding should be promoted the most because it is one of the most cost-effective interventions aimed at reducing infant morbidity and mortality. In addition to the multiple advantages of breast milk in the mother-child bond and biological and immune properties, the most relevant characteristic of breast milk is that it covers all nutritional needs. When breastfeeding is not possible, the World Health Organization recommends infant formula as the first option. The second option is diluted cow's milk, which entails the risk for nutritional deficiency that should be strictly monitored and timely resolved. When infants are fed with diluted cow's milk, they are mainly at risk for iron, zinc, vitamin A, D, C, and E, amino acid, and essential fatty acid deficiency.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Bariatric surgery has been shown to be the best alternative for the control of severe obesity, with improvements in patient quality of life. However, regaining weight due to inadequate nutrition can compromise surgery results. Objective: to investigate the relationship between weight gain and food consumption and quality of life among women at least 5 years after gastric bypass procedure. Methods: Seventy-three women who had bariatric surgery >= 5 years prior were evaluated for food consumption on 3 non-consecutive days and quality of life according to the dimensions of the BAROS tool. Results: Twenty two (29.7%) regained at least 10% of their weight. The group of women with stable weight loss had significantly lower carbohydrate consumption and showed no difference in energy consumption. Self-esteem and willingness to work also had a better score in this group, which contributed to a better quality of life score. Conclusion: From a weight regain below 10% after 5 years of bariatric surgery, the perception of quality of life among women changes. There are reasons for further studies on the effects of the proportion of macronutrients on dietary energy after bariatric surgery, including variations in the surgical technique and metabolic and anatomical variables.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the composition of macronutrients present in the milk of mothers of preterm newborn infants (PTNB) - protein, fat, carbohydrate, and calories - by gestational age (GA), chronological age (CA) and maternal variables. Methods: Longitudinal study that analyzed 215 milk samples from the 51 mothers of PTNB admitted in three Neonatal Intensive Care Units of Rio de Janeiro from May/2013-January/2014. Milk collection was performed by pickup pump, on a fixed day of each week until discharge. The spectrophotometric technique with Infrared Analysis (MilkoScan Minor 104) was used for the quantitative analysis. A sample of 7 mL of human milk was taken from the total volume of milk extracted by the mother. The data was grouped by GA (25-27, 28-31, 32-36, 37-40 weeks) and by CA (zero to 4, 5-8, 9-12, 13-16 weeks). Results: Protein, carbohydrate, fat and calories did not show any pattern of change, with no difference among groups of GA. When the macronutrients were analyzed by groups of CA, protein decreased, with significant difference between the first two groups of CA. Carbohydrates, fat and calories presented increasing values in all groups, without significant differences. Weight gain during pregnancy, maternal hypertension and maternal age were associated with changes in fat and calories in the first moment of the analysis of milk. Conclusions: There was a significant decrease in the levels of protein during the first eight weeks after birth. CA may be an important factor in the composition of human milk.

Abstract The gluten free diet (GFD) is the only treatment for celiac disease, wheat allergy and non-celiac gluten/wheat sensitivity. GFD is reported as an unbalanced diet, low in fibre and high in fat and carbohydrates. The aim of this study was to evaluate energy, macronutrients and fiber contribution of gluten-free cereal products (pound cake, tin loaf, cookies and pizza) coming from different commercial premixes, available at the local market. Also, the results were compared with a commercial equivalent made with wheat flour. For centesimal composition determination, AOAC Official Method 2016 was applied. The energy was calculated using Atwater factors. The results obtained for pound cake were: 6.0-8.3g% protein; 9.2-11.3g% fat; 1.5-2.3g% dietary fibre; 40.0-53.1g% carbohydrate and 285-339Kcal% energy. For tin loaf: 3.0-6.6g% protein; 3.1-12.7% fat; 2.7-4.0g% dietary fibre; 36.8-50.1g% carbohydrate and 217-290Kcal% energy. For cookies: 3.5-8.5g% protein; 25.9-31.0g% fat; 0.9-5.9g% dietary fibre; 53.9-60.1g% carbohydrate and 483-527Kcal% energy. For pizza: 7.4-9.3g% protein; 7.3-11.2g% fat; 2.8-8.0g% dietary fibre; 19.1-29.6g% carbohydrate and 172-240Kcal% of energy. Products made with premix that only contains rice flour and starches contribute little to meeting recommended daily intake. The ones that contain other farinaceous sources (sorghum flour, buckwheat and teff) show higher dietary fibre content. The presence of pea flour, soybean and teff show an increase of protein content. The analysed products present same or lower protein intake, similar energy and carbohydrate intake and higher fat and dietary fibre intake, compared to their commercial equivalent made with wheat flour.

RESUMO

Abstract Objective: To identify whether the effects of thyroid disease during pregnancy and lactation affect the nutritional composition of human milk. Methods: Systematic review of the scientific literature using the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online/MedLine databases to evaluate the association of thyroid diseases during pregnancy and lactation with the nutritional composition of human milk. There was no delimitation by period or by language, and the searches were completed in March 2019. The following descriptors were applied: human milk AND thyroid AND composition, using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) protocol for data search, selection, and extraction. The flowchart proposed for bibliographic search resulted in 12 articles and, of these, four were selected. Results: The articles elected for this review were published between 1976 and 2018. Two studies found significant differences in the nutritional composition of mothers' milk with hypothyroidism or overweight compared with the milk of those without hypothyroidism. Studies have shown that the presence of the disease led to changes in the nutritional composition of human milk, especially a higher concentration of human milk fat. Conclusion: It is extremely important that these women have continuous nutritional follow-up to minimize the impact of these morbidities on the nutritional composition of human milk.

Foram aplicados os seguintes descritores: human milk AND thyroid AND composition, utilizando protocolo preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) para a busca, seleção e extração de dados.
