RESUMO

In this article, I looked at the life of Yun Il-sun, a representative medical scientist of modern Korea, and examined the following problems. First, I took note of the position of the Korean people in the academic system of the Japanese colonial empire and restored the life of Yun Il-sun as specifically as possible. Yun was educated among Japanese people from elementary school to university. Although he received the best education at Old System High School and Imperial University and grew to be a prominent medical scientist, he could not overcome his identity as a colonized. Yun Il-sun, who moved from Keijo Imperial University to Severance Union Medical College, involved in activities founding of the Korean Medical Association and the Korean Medical Journal. Second, I the meaning of ‘culture’ to the intellectuals in the periphery. Old System High School and Imperial University where Yun Il-sun was educated were the hotbed of ‘culturalism.’ Yun's college days were the heyday of Taisho Democracy, and students were attracted to Marxism, Christian poverty movement, Buddhist cultivation movement and so on. Yun sought to overcome the ideological of young people through the acquisition of ‘culture.’ The ‘culture’ emphasized by Yun had an enlightenment characteristic that emphasized education, but it also functioned as a‘identity culture of educated elites.’ Third, I used the concept of ‘colonial academism’ and examined the aspects and characteristics of the colonial-periphery academic field, focusing on medicine. Yun Il-sun was a Korean professor at the Keijo Imperial University. He founded an academic society and published an academic journal for Koreans. He attempted to reproduce scholarship by doctoral dissertations. At the same time, several facts show that he was also in the affected area of ‘colonial academism’: the fact that he was kicked out of the Keijo Imperial University, the fact that the Korean Medical Association and the Korean Medical Journal were banned by Governor General, the fact that his students asked for doctoral degrees from Kyoto Imperial University where he studied. Yun Il-sun crossed the limits of ‘colonial academism’ and acted as the agent of empire. This was made possible by the characteristics of the academic discipline of medicine, the environment of the Severance Union Medical College, and personal traits of superior ability and indifference to politics. I the postcolonial evolution of the ‘colonial academism’ and ‘culturalism.’ The mix of continuity and discontinuity from ‘colonial academism’ and the hybrid of Japanese academism and American academism, the Korean characteristics of ‘postcolonial academism.’ Yun tried to harmonize the American academism with the Japanese academism and the purity of academism. This effort was revealed as an emphasis on basic medicine and natural sciences. As combined with culturalism and indifference to politics, he was recognized as the symbol of ivory tower and academism.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In 1997 the Korean Association of Medical Journal Editors (KAMJE) instituted a program to evaluate member journals. Journals that passed the initial evaluation were indexed in the KoreaMed. Here, we report changes in measures of quality of the KAMJE member journals during the last 20 years. METHODS: Quality measures used in the study comprised 3 assessment categories; self-assessment by journal editors, assessment of the journals by KAMJE reviewers, and by Korean health science librarians. Each used detailed criteria to score the journals on a scale of 0 to 5 or 6 in multiple dimensions. We compared scores at baseline evaluation and those after 7 years for 129 journals and compared improvements in journals indexed vs. not-indexed by the Web of Science (Science Citation Index Expanded; SCIE). RESULTS: Among 251 KAMJE member journals at the end of 2015, 227 passed evaluation criteria and 129 (56%) had both baseline and 7-year follow-up assessment data. The journals showed improvement overall (increase in median [interquartile range; IQR] score from baseline, 0.47 [0.64]; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.44–0.61; P < 0.001) and within each category (median [IQR] increase by editor's assessment, 0.17 [0.83]; 95% CI, 0.04–0.26; P = 0.007; by reviewer's, 0.45 [1.00]; 95% CI, 0.29–0.57; P < 0.001; by librarian's, 1.75 [1.08]; 95% CI, 1.77–2.18, P < 0.001). Before the foundation of KAMJE in 1996, there were only 5 Korean medical journals indexed in the MEDLINE and none in SCIE, but 24 journals in the MEDLINE and 34 journals in SCIE were indexed by 2016. CONCLUSION: The KAMJE journal evaluation program successfully contributes improving the quality of the member journals.

The Peruvian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (SPOG) was founded 70 years ago, in 1947, with the mission of contributing to the scientific progress in benefit of the Peruvian women. In 1955, the first number of The Peruvian Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics (RPGO), the official journal of SPOG, was published with the name Ginecología y Obstetricia [Ginecol Obstet, o Ginecol Obstet (Perú)] until 2006, when the name changed to Revista Peruana de Ginecología y Obstetricia (Rev Peru Ginecol Obstet). An account of the Society's activities may be retrieved through the editorials and papers written from the beginning of RPGO, as we observe the desire of the SPOG directors to have an organ of scientific communication where the leading obstetricians and gynecologists would publish their medical experiences and outcomes, as a source of information for the younger physicians. Research has contributed to the advancement in reproductive medicine, early diagnosis of gynecologic cancer, adequate delivery care, decrease in maternal and perinatal mortality, obstetrical hemorrhage, preeclampsia, pregnancy and newborn at high altitude, contraception, menopause, genital prolapse and urinary stress incontinence, breast pathology, genetics, ultrasound, endoscopic surgery, and many related themes. Members of SPOG have created institutional chapters such as the Fertility, Perinatology, Climacteric and Menopause, Ultrasound, Laparoscopic Surgery, Contraception, Fetal Medicine and others. The various SPOG Executive Committees have supported the RPGO permanence, and six Presidents of the Society took the challenge of managing the Journal in order to endorse its quality, punctuality and visibility. All the articles published since 1955 can be currently visited in its OJS web, where pdf files may be downloaded. Articles are also published in English. The RPGO is an open access journal and is indexed in important databases. There you can read about the burgeoning medical actions of the SPOG.

Abstract The article analyses knowledge assimilation and the development of clinical and research practices relating to sex hormones among Brazilian gynaecologists. It discusses the paths taken by medical thought from the reception of the hormones to their transformation into contraceptives. Our objective is to comprehend styles of introducing and disseminating medical technologies in the area of reproductive health in Brazil. It uses methods of historical analysis and takes as its source the Anais Brasileiros de Ginecologia, a journal published between 1936 and 1970. From the outset, the accompaniment of scientific breakthroughs in relation to sex hormones and their use to treat diverse female illnesses played a key role in the rapid medical acceptance of hormonal contraception. Scientific and technical questions (side effects, dosages) and the demographic issue formed part of the majority of the debates. Objections from the Catholic Church were considered but did not set the agenda of medical thought on contraceptives. The quest to consolidate gynaecology as a scientific, modern and cosmopolitan area of expertise, along with sanitary and demographic motives that allowed contraceptives to be classed as ethical drugs, are identified as processes underlying the assimilation and metabolization of sex hormones as hormonal contraceptives.

RESUMO

Unlike my other editorials published in AP J Psychol Med, the views expressed in this editorial are not completely my own; hence, most of the information is in quotes. I tried to summarize the published literature related to editorial independence. The sole aim is to make all the stakeholders aware of the concept of ‘editorial independence’. The societies have the duty to create an atmosphere where editors feel secure. With humility I would say, to my knowledge this is the only published article on ‘editorial independence’ from India, and possibly other neighbouring countries. Let me sincerely say, this is not a grandiose expression. I stand to be corrected.

RESUMO

The Korean Association of Medical Journal Editors (KAMJE) was founded in 1996. Among the 51 journals which participated in the founding of KAMJE, only 5 were listed in PubMed at the time, and none in Scientific Citation Index (SCI). In order to improve the quality of Korean medical journals, KAMJE established regular and systematic evaluation of medical journals, and has held academies for journal editors and education programs for manuscript editors. KAMJE has also focused on the database of Korean medical journals. KoreaMed, which provides access to articles published in Korean medical journals; KoMCI, which analyzes and provides citation data; and KoreaMed synapse, a digital archive and reference-linking platform. All of those are products of the efforts of KAMJE. By publishing "Good Publication Practice Guidelines for Medical Journals", KAMJE also has been focused on research and publication ethics. KAMJE has played an active part in establishing the Asia Pacific Association of Medical Journal Editors (APAME) and West Pacific Regional Index Medicus (WPRIM). Today, KAMJE, now composed of 188 journals covering medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and nutrition, has 14 and 23 journals listed in PubMed and SCI, respectively. These achievements of KAMJE, attributable to the unrelenting efforts of Korean medical journal editors and editors, may be helpful in further improving the status of Korean medical journals.
