RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Improving the nutritional condition of grapevine in spring to regulate bloom, fruit set, and yield is among the management goals of vineyards. METHODS: In the present study, the early season spray of calcium sulfate (C; 0.00 and 2.00%), potassium sulfate (K; 0.00 and 3.00%), and agricultural grade mineral oil (V; 0.00 and 1.00%) on flower and fruit phenology, nutrient concentration, and cluster biophysical indices and yield of Sultana grapevine ( Vitis vinifera L.) were investigated for two consecutive years. RESULTS: Based on the results, the spray of this nutrient combined with mineral oil significantly affected all the treatments except cluster length, berry length, and phosphorus concentration. The highest concentrations of potassium, calcium, and magnesium were obtained in the vines treated with V0K1C1, and the highest concentrations of zinc and iron were obtained only in the vines treated with mineral oil. In treatments containing mineral oil, especially in combination with the second level of calcium and potassium (V1K1C1), bloom time, berries pea-sized time, and harvest time were delayed by 3, 3, and 6 days compared with control vines. While in vines treated with a combination of the second level of potassium and calcium (V0K1C1), bloom time, berries pea-sized time, and harvest time were advanced by 5, 4, and 1.50 days, respectively, compared with control vines. Regarding the biophysical indices of the cluster, it was found that the vines treated with V1K1C1 had higher cluster weight, berry weight, fruit, and raisins yield than other treatments. Also, the highest berry quality, including total soluble solids, titratable acidity, and total phenol content, were obtained in the vines treated with V0K1C1. However, the lowest berry quality was observed in the vines treated with mineral oil. CONCLUSIONS: Therefore, the combination of nutrients with mineral oil can alleviate the adverse effect of mineral oil solely on some phenological indices and berry quality-related traits in vineyards.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND@#Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing skin disease in childhood, managed by topical therapies. In the Philippines, use of affordable, widely available and effective alternative therapies such as mineral oil (MO) and virgin coconut oil (VCO), are practical especially in the far-flung areas.@*OBJECTIVES@#This study compares the antimicrobial and barrier repair properties of MO and VCO in mild to moderate atopic dermatitis, using SCORAD (SCORing for Atopic Dermatitis), bacterial culture, tewameter, mexameter and corneometer.@*METHODS@#This is a randomized controlled doubleblind trial conducted in two tertiary hospitals. Bacterial colonies, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), level of hydration and erythema were determined at baseline and after 4 weeks using bacterial culture, tewameter, corneometer and mexameter, respectively. SCORAD and adverse effects were also determined at baseline, 2nd and 4th week of treatment.@*RESULTS@#Baseline patient demographics were similar for both treatment groups. The SCORAD, TEWL and level of erythema were significantly decreased throughout the 4-week duration for both treatment groups, but much lower in the VCO group. The hydration level was significantly increased throughout the 4-week duration but much higher for the VCO group. Lastly, there is more proportion of cultures with "no growth" after the 4-week treatment duration in VCO group.@*CONCLUSION@#The antimicrobial and barrier repair properties of VCO are very important alternative which is affordable, readily available, safe and effective for children with mild to moderate AD.

RESUMO

Good paraffin sections are key to correct histopathological diagnosis. Xylene is hazardous to health, expensive, and difficult to dispose. Various substitutes have been tried without success. We aimed to examine if 1.7% dishwasher soap (DWS) aqueous solution and refined mineral oil (RMO) for deparaffinization can replace xylene. Fifty tissue blocks consisting of benign and malignant lesions were processed using xylene (A), 1.7% DWS (B), and RMO (C). Each section was evaluated, scored as 0 (inadequate) and 1 (adequate) by two independent pathologists who were blinded to agent used. Following criteria were considered: nuclear staining, cytoplasmic staining, clarity, crispness, and uniformity. Total score of <2 was graded as inadequate for diagnosis and 3–5 as adequate. Statistical analysis was done using the SPSS software by applying chi-square test. Among three methods, B had the best scores in adequacy for cytoplasmic staining (P = 0.001), clarity (P = 0.004), and crispness (P = 0.003). About 1.7% DWS and RMO were found to be effective methods for deparaffinization and can replace xylene.

RESUMO

Objective To study the effects of mineral oil covered M2 culture medium droplet culture, M16 droplet culture, and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on the morphology and survival rates of mouse oocytes during the release from diplotene arrest. Methods Oocytes were randomly divided into 3 groups and individually cultured for 4 h in M2 covered with mineral oil, M16 covered with mineral oil, and/or M16 only to cause germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD). The morphological changes and survival rates of oocytes in each group were observed under the microscope. Oocytes were randomly divided into 3 groups and cultured in the medium with 0%, 1%, and 2% DMSO. The effect of DMSO on oocytes was also observed during the release from diplotene arrest. Results The survival rates of oocytes in M2 covered with mineral oil were higher than those in M16 (P < 0.05). There was no statistical difference with respect to release of mouse oocytes from diplotene arrest between the oocytes in M2 covered with mineral oil and oocytes in M16. The shape of oocytes in M2 with mineral oil was better than that of oocytes in M16. The effect of DMSO on the survival rate of oocytes was similar in the medium with 0%, 1% and 2%DMSO. But the effect of 2% DMSO on the release of oocytes was statistically significant (P < 0.01). Conclusion During the release of mouse oocytes from diplotene arrest, oocytes in M2 covered with mineral oil have much better morphology and higher survival rate than those in M16. DMSO (0%, 1% and 2%) has no effect on the survival rate of oocytes. However, 2% DMSO is more effective in promoting the release of mouse oocytes from diplotene arrest.

An offline silver-impregnated silica gel solid-phase extraction (Ag-SPE) approach combined with a programmed temperature vaporization-gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (PTV-GC-FID) was proposed for routine analysis of mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH) in chocolates. The MOSH in chocolates were extracted by n-hexane and 1 mL of extract was purified by offline Ag-SPE column. The SPE columns packed with 0.3% Ag-activated silica gel were used to separate MOSH from triglycerides and olefins in chocolates. The eluent of MOSH fraction was only 5 mL and then concentrated to 0.2 mL through nitrogen blowing with little evaporation loss. The PTV parameters were as follows: the initial temperature was set at 45℃ and held for 1 min (split ratio was 200∶1), then warmed up to 360℃ at linear gradient of 250℃ minSymbolm_1 and held for 27 min (split valve was closed for 2 min followed by split ratio of 100∶1). The GC injection volume was 40 μL. The GC column was heated from 35℃ (3 min) to 350℃ at 25℃/min, and then raised to 370℃ (10 min) at 5℃/min. The flow rate of the carrier gas was 1.3 mL/min (and pressure was 60 kPa), FID temperature was set at 380℃. The limit of quantification (LOQ) and the recoveries of the method were 0.5 mg/kg and 84.9%-108.6%, respectively, with the relative standard deviations (RSD) of 0.2%-1.5%. Twenty-five commercial chocolate samples were analyzed with the proposed method, and it was found that the MOSH in three samples were not detected, and the concentrations of MOSH in other 22 samples were 1.09-8.15 mg/kg (the concentrations of MOSH with C16-C35 component were 0.56-4.43 mg/kg). The results suggested that it was necessary to routinely detect mineral oil contamination in chocolates for food safety.

The number of gym goers who self-inject oily substances to increase muscle volume artificially and thereby improve the aesthetic appearance of their muscles that are unresponsive to training is increasing. Although immediate effects and satisfactory aesthetic results such as increased volume or changes in the contour of several areas of the body might be observed, oil infiltration might cause several short- and long-term complications, which are often irreversible. The awareness and actions of medical and health professional societies are fundamental for the prevention and control of this problem. In this article, possible complications are reviewed, and the case of a patient with severe local complications caused by oil injection is reported.

RESUMO

An alternative method based on an off-line solid phase extraction ( SPE ) combined with programmable temperature vaporizer-based ( PTV) large volume injection-gas chromatography-flame ionization detection ( LVI-GC-FID ) was developed. The goal of this study was to determine mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons ( MOSH ) in camellia seed oils. The purification condition of SPE columns with silver impregnated the activated silica gel and activated aluminum oxide was optimized. The optimal SPE cartridge was loaded with 10 g of Ag-activated silica gel per 10 g of activated aluminum oxide. The PTV initial temperature was set at 75℃ for 1 min (split 200:1), and heated from 75℃ to 370℃ at 250℃/min. Then the diverter valve was closed for 1 min and opened again with the split flow ratio changing to 50:1 . The injection volume was 40μL. The calibration curve of paraffin oil was liner in the range of 5-500 mg/kg with correlation coefficient of 0. 998. The detection limit (LOD) and the quantification limit (LOQ) of paraffin oils in hexane were 0. 26 mg/kg and 0. 80 mg/kg, respectively. The recoveries from spiked oil samples were between 93 . 3% and 112 . 7%, with relative standard deviation ( RSD ) of 1 . 8%-5 . 2%, the RSD of intra-day and inter-day were less than 2 . 6% . This procedure was applied to analyze the MOSH in 11 commercial camellia seed oils and the contamination was found to range from 6. 8 mg/kg to 76. 7 mg/kg. The method is simple in operation with high sensitivity, good reproducibility and low cost, and suitable for determination of MOSH in vegetable oils.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the therapeutic effects of mineral oil (MO) and hyaluronic acid (HA) mixture eye drops on the tear film and ocular surface in a mouse model of experimental dry eye (EDE). METHODS: Eye drops consisting of 0.1% HA alone or mixed with 0.1%, 0.5%, or 5.0% MO were applied to desiccating stress-induced murine dry eyes. Tear volume, corneal irregularity score, tear film break-up time (TBUT), and corneal fluorescein staining scores were measured at 5 and 10 days after treatment. Ten days after treatment, goblet cells in the conjunctiva were counted after Periodic acid-Schiff staining. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the tear volume between desiccating stress-induced groups. The corneal irregularity score was lower in the 0.5% MO group compared with the EDE and HA groups. The 0.5% and 5.0% MO groups showed a significant improvement in TBUT compared with the EDE group. Mice treated with 0.1% and 0.5% MO mixture eye drops showed a significant improvement in fluorescein staining scores compared with the EDE group and the HA group. The conjunctival goblet cell count was higher in the 0.5% MO group compared with the EDE group and HA group. CONCLUSIONS: The MO and HA mixture eye drops had a beneficial effect on the tear films and ocular surface of murine dry eye. The application of 0.5% MO and 0.1% HA mixture eye drops could improve corneal irregularity, the corneal fluorescein staining score, and conjunctival goblet cell count compared with 0.1% HA eye drops in the treatment of EDE.

RESUMO

Dental biofilm control represents a basic procedure to prevent caries and the occurrence of periodontal diseases. Currently, toothbrushes and dentifrices are used almost universally, and the employment of good oral hygiene allows for appropriate biofilm removal by both mechanical and chemical control. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of adding vegetable or mineral oil to a commercially available dentifrice in dental biofilm control. A comparison using the Oral Hygiene Index Simplified (OHI-S) was performed in 30 individuals who were randomly divided into three groups. Group 1 (G1) received a commercially available dentifrice; the composition of this dentifrice was modified by addition of mineral oil (Nujol®) for group 2 (G2) or a vegetable oil (Alpha Care®) for group 3 (G3) at 10 percent of the total volume, respectively. The two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance (two-way ANOVA) was used to test the effect of group (G1, G2 and G3) or time (baseline, 45 days and 90 days) on the OHI-S index scores. Statistical analysis revealed a significant reduction in the OHI-S at day 90 in G2 (p < 0.05) and G3 (p < 0.0001) in comparison to G1. Therefore, the addition of a vegetable or a mineral oil to a commercially available dentifrice improved dental biofilm control, suggesting that these oils may aid in the prevention and/or control of caries and periodontal disease.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of different forms of in vitro culture on the nitric oxide actionin maturation and membrane integrity on bovine cumulus-oocyte complex. No significant effect was observed betweendifferent forms of culture (mineral oil vs plate; P > 0.05), as much for membrane integrity as for expansion of the CC.However, it was observed that oocytes of the groups control and 10-3 M of SNP, cultivated in plate, had presented greaterpercentage of cell with maintenance of membrane integrity than same treatments cultivated in drop. The addition of10-3 M of SNP showed an inhibitory effect on the expansion and membrane integrity of CC and oocytes in both, culturein drops under oil and plate (P < 0.05). The culture form did not intervene with the extrusion of the first polar corpuscleand the addition of 10-3 M of SNP inhibited this extrusion in the both systems (P < 0.05). There was a dose-responseeffect on the concentration of NO in the maturation medium in both types of cultivation (P < 0,05), and this was higherin the culture medium under oil, except when added 10-3 M of SNP, treatment in which there was no difference in thetypes of cultivation employed. (P<0.05). These data demonstrate that the culture system did not intervene with theaction of the NO in the maturation in vitro of bovine COC, but intervened with the integrity of the plasmatic membraneof the oocyte.

RESUMO

Lipoid pneumonia is a rare form of pneumonia caused by inhalation or aspiration of fat-containing substances like petroleum jelly, mineral oils, certain laxatives, etc. It usually presents as an insidious onset, chronic respiratory illness simulating interstitial lung diseases. Rarely, it may present as an acute respiratory illness, especially when the exposure to fatty substance(s) is massive. Radiological findings are diverse and can mimic many other diseases including carcinoma, acute or chronic pneumonia, ARDS, or a localized granuloma. Pathologically it is a chronic foreign body reaction characterized by lipid-laden macrophages. Diagnosis of this disease is often missed as it is usually not considered in the differential diagnoses of community-acquired pneumonia; it requires a high degree of suspicion. In suspected cases, diagnosis may be confirmed by demonstrating the presence of lipid-laden macrophages in sputum, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, or fine needle aspiration cytology/biopsy from the lung lesion. Treatment of this illness is poorly defined and constitutes supportive therapy, repeated bronchoalveolar lavage, and corticosteroids.

Use injections of illicit material to improve body contour is still a health problem in Mexico. Most commonly used are oily materials that in many patients may cause aesthetic and incapacitating functional complications. The case of a 32-year-old homosexual male patient is reported; he was injected with 80 cc of mineral oil in each mamma, which caused an important inflammatory reaction, growth, and severe ptosis of these. He was in apparent general good shape; thus, he was treated with bilateral subcutaneous mastectomy and free full-thickness nipple-areola complex graft. We consider that this pathology remains a current health problem that should alert health authorities to take preventive measures with regard to its administration.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical features and the courses and effects of long-term treatment, and to analyze the association between clinical features and duration of therapy in chronic functional constipation in children. METHODS: This study enrolled 57 children with chronic functional constipation who were treated in the Eulji Hospital for more than five months between May, 2000 and February, 2004. We analyzed the clinical features and the courses and results of the phase of disimpaction, maintenance, weaning retrospectively. RESULTS: Mean age at diagnosis was 3.3+/-2.3 years and the male to female ratio was 24:33. The mean duration of symptoms was 12.5+/-13.9 months in 49 patients. Mean defecation frequency per week was 5.7+/-4.0 and hard stools were seen in 59.7% of patients. The clinical presentations were as follows : abdominal pain(45.6%), rectal blood loss(28.1%), vomiting(19.3%). Fifty-four patients had successful disimpaction with lactulose+bisacodyl/glycerine enema or only lactulose, except for three patients with polyethylene glycol(PEG) solution. After a maintenance phase with lactulose or lactulose+mineral oil, a significant increase in defecation frequency per week was observed(5.7+/-4.0 to 6.3+/-1.8(P<0.05)), discomfort in defecation was not observed in all patients and hard stools were not observed except in four patients. The mean duration of the maintenance phase was 5.5+/-4.3 months and mean duration of total therapy was 10.8+/-3.8 months in 42 patients who finished the weaning phase. Duration of the maintenance phase and of total therapy had no statistical correlation with age, duration of symptoms and frequency of stools, and had no association with clinical presentations. CONCLUSION: Long-term treatment is necessary for effective treatment of chronic functional constipation in children. Further long-term follow up would have to be perfomed to evaluate successful treatment.

RESUMO

Lipoid pneumonia is chronic, interstitial, proliferative inflammation resulting from aspiration of lipoid material. Mineral oil is a hydrocarbon that physicians often use to treat chronic constipation in children and adults. Mineral oil may not elicit a normal protective cough reflex and may impair mucociliary transport. We experienced a case of exogenous lipoid pneumonia caused by aspiration of mineral oil given as a laxatives confirmed by fiberoptic bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage and bronchial biopsy in a 9-month-old boy with chronic cough and radiologic evidence of parenchymal lung disease. We reported this case with a brief review of related literatures.
