Abstract Introduction: Adequate biological identification is fundamental for establishing integrated pest management programs and identifying the trophic and mutualist relationships that can affect pest population dynamics. Aphids are the main pest of pepper Capsicum spp. (Solanaceae) crops in Southwestern Colombia, due to their role as vectors of viruses. However, the identification of aphid species is complex, limiting the investigations performed to address their interactions with other organisms. Ants and aphids present a facultative mutualistic relationship, that promotes the growth of hemipteran colonies, for this reason, the study of the ecological mutualistic association between aphids and ants is important. Objective: The main objective was to discriminate the aphid species present in commercial crops of Capsicum spp., and to identify the ant community that attends the aphid colonies and its effects on the size of the aphid colonies. Methods: Aphid species, and their ant mutualist, were collected from Capsicum annuum and Capsicum frutescens, in the Cauca valley, Southwestern Colombia. We used the DNA barcoding approach to identify aphid species, and the ants were identified by morphology-based taxonomy. To evaluate the effect of ant care on the size and structure of aphid colonies, generalized linear models were calculated using as the response variables the total number of aphids for each colony and the proportion of nymphs. Results: The aphid species that attack pepper crops, are: Aphis gossypii and Myzus persicae (Hemiptera: Aphididae), with A. gossypii being the species that interacts with ants (19 ant species). A. gossypii colonies attended by ants had larger sizes and more nymphs per colony, than those not attended. Conclusions: Although the aphid-ant interaction is not species-specific, it is necessary to consider its role in the propagation of viral diseases in peppers and to determine how this interaction may affect regional biological control strategies.


Resumen Introducción: La adecuada identificación biológica es fundamental para establecer programas de manejo integrado de plagas e identificar las relaciones tróficas y mutualistas que pueden afectar la dinámica poblacional de insectos plaga. Los áfidos son las principales plagas del ají Capsicum spp. (Solanaceae) en el suroccidente colombiano, debido a su rol como vectores de virus. Sin embargo, su identificación es compleja, y limita las investigaciones que intentan revelar sus interacciones con otros organismos. Las hormigas y los áfidos presentan una relación mutualista facultativa, que promueve el crecimiento de las colonias de los hemípteros, por esta razón, el estudio de la asociación ecológica y mutualista entre áfidos y hormigas es importante. Objetivo: El principal objetivo de esta investigación fue discriminar las especies de áfidos presentes en cultivos comerciales de Capsicum spp., e identificar la comunidad de hormigas que atiende las colonias de áfidos y su efecto en el tamaño de las colonias de áfidos. Métodos: Los áfidos, y las hormigas mutualistas de estos áfidos, se recolectaron de Capsicum annuum y Capsicum frutescens, en el valle del rio Cauca, en el suroccidente colombiano. Se empleó el Código de barras del ADN para identificar las especies de áfidos, y las hormigas se identificaron empleando taxonomía basada en morfología. Para evaluar el efecto que tiene el cuidado de las hormigas sobre el tamaño de las colonias de áfidos, se empleó un modelo lineal generalizado, utilizando como variables de respuesta el número total de áfidos por cada colonia y la proporción de ninfas por colonia. Resultados: Las especies de áfidos que atacan los cultivos de ají, son: Aphis gossypii y Myzus persicae (Hemiptera: Aphididae), siendo A. gossypii la especie que interactúa con hormigas (19 especies). Las colonias de A. gossypii atendidas por hormigas presentan mayor tamaño y número de ninfas, que aquellas desatendidas. Conclusiones: Aunque la interacción áfido-hormiga no es especie específica, es necesario considerar su rol en la propagación de enfermedades virales en plantas cultivadas y determinar cómo esta interacción puede afectar la implementación de estrategias de control biológico.

Fungal metabolites are promising alternatives for the development of biorational pesticides. In this sense, microfungi from tropical regions are valuable sources of natural compounds for pest management. With the aim of broadening the search for new eco-friendly products to manage plant pests, this study was carried out to evaluate the biological activity of 23 tropical fungal extracts on three species of phytophagous insects and a plant parasitic nematode. In addition, the active principles of the most effective extract were identified. The insect deterrent activity of fungal extracts was evaluated on the settling of aphids Myzus persicae and Rhopalosiphum padi, and on the feeding of lepidoptera larva Spodoptera littoralis; the nematostatic activity was evaluated on the mobility of Meloidogyne javanica. Active metabolites from Gliomastix masseei were identified by GC-MS techniques and by comparison with commercial standards. Results showed seven extracts with strong effect on the settling of M. persicae and R. padi (settling inhibition >80%). The calculated median of effective concentration (EC50) values ranged from 8 to 38 µg/cm² for the extracts of Clonostachys rosea and G. masseei, respectively. Bioassay-guided separation of the ethyl acetate extract of G. masseei revealed the presence of fatty acids and their derivatives, where methyl 9-octadecenoate was the most active compound with EC50 values of 16 µg and 35 µg/cm² for M. persicae and R. padi, respectively. Extracts of C. rosea and G. masseei could be a promising option in the control of pest aphids in agriculture.


Los metabolitos fúngicos son agentes prometedores para el desarrollo de plaguicidas biorracionales. En este sentido, los hongos microscópicos de zonas tropicales representan una valiosa fuente de compuestos naturales para el manejo de plagas. Con la finalidad de ampliar la investigación en productos amigables con el medio ambiente, en este estudio se evaluó la actividad biológica de 23 extractos de hongos sobre 3 especies de insectos fitófagos y un nematodo fitoparásito; además se identificaron los componentes del extracto más activo. El efecto disuasivo de los extractos fúngicos se evaluó en el asentamiento de Myzus persicae y Rhopalosiphum padi, así como en la alimentación de Spodoptera littoralis; la actividad nematostática se evaluó sobre la movilidad de Meloidogyne javanica. Los metabolitos activos de Gliomastix masseei se identificaron por cromatografía de gases-espectrometría de masas y por comparación con muestras comerciales. Los resultados mostraron 7 extractos con fuerte efecto en la inhibición del asentamiento (> 80%) de M. persicae y R. padi. Los valores de la concentración efectiva media (CE50) estuvieron en el rango de 8 a 38 µg/cm² para los extractos de Clonostachys rosea y G. masseei, respectivamente. El extracto de acetato de etilo de G. masseei se fraccionó por un proceso biodirigido y reveló la presencia de ácidos grasos y sus derivados, donde el 9-octadecenoato de metilo fue el más activo, con una CE50 de 16 µg/cm² para M. persicae y 35 µg/cm² para R. padi. Los extractos fúngicos de C. rosea y G. masseei pueden ser una alternativa promisoria en el control de áfidos que son plaga en la agricultura.

The green peach aphid (Myzus persicae), a plant pest, and gray mold disease, caused by Botrytis cinerea, affect vegetables and fruit crops all over the world. To control this aphid and mold, farmers typically rely on the use of chemical insecticides or fungicides. However, intensive use of these chemicals over many years has led to the development of resistance. To overcome this problem, there is a need to develop alternative control methods to suppress populations of this plant pest and pathogen. Recently, potential roles have been demonstrated for entomopathogenic fungi in endophytism, phytopathogen antagonism, plant growth promotion, and rhizosphere colonization. Here, the antifungal activities of selected fungi with high virulence against green peach aphids were tested to explore their potential for the dual control of B. cinerea and M. persicae. Antifungal activities against B. cinerea were evaluated by dual culture assays using both aerial conidia and cultural filtrates of entomopathogenic fungi. Two fungal isolates, Beauveria bassiana SD15 and Metarhizium anisopliae SD3, were identified as having both virulence against aphids and antifungal activity. The virulence of these isolates against aphids was further tested using cultural filtrates, blastospores, and aerial conidia. The most virulence was observed in the simultaneous treatment with blastospores and cultural filtrate. These results suggest that the two fungal isolates selected in this study could be used effectively for the dual control of green peach aphids and gray mold for crop protection.

Aphids are one of the most destructive pests in crop production such as pepper, cucumber, and eggplants. The importance of entomopathogenic fungi as alternative pest control agents is increasing. Conidia of entomopathogenic fungi are influenced by environmental conditions, such as temperature and relative humidity, and cause slow and fluctuating mortality. These factors have prevented wider application and use of biocontrol agents. For investigation of means of mitigation of such problems, we conducted bioassays with 47 fungal culture filtrates in order to evaluate the potential of secondary metabolites produced by entomopathogenic fungi for use in aphid control. Among 47 culture filtrates cultured potato dextrose broth, filtrate of Beauveria bassiana Bb08 showed the highest mortality (78%) against green peach aphid three days after treatments. Filtrate of Bb08 cultured in Adamek's medium showed higher toxicity as 100% to third instar nymphs of the aphid compared with seven other filtrates cultured in different broths amended with colloidal chitin or oil. The culture filtrates and fungal cultures from media amended with colloidal chitin or oil had lower control efficacies than filtrates without these additives in three different media. These results indicate that the fungal culture fluid or culture filtrate of B. bassiana Bb08 cultured in Adamek's medium has potential for development as a mycopesticide for aphid control.

This study aimed to evaluate the quality of the aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer), Lipaphis erysimi (Kaltenbach) and Brevicoryne brassicae (L.) as hosts for the parasitoid Diaeretiella rapae (McIntosh). Parasitization by D. rapae was higher on M. persicae than on L. erysimi and B. brassicae. The time of development of D. rapae from egg to mummy or egg to adult male or female were shorter on M. persicae than on L. erysimi and B. brassicae. Moreover, D. rapae showed no significant differences in the emergence rate, sex ratio and longevity when reared on the three aphid species. Myzus persicae was the largest aphid host, with B. brassicae and L. erysimi being of intermediate and of small size, respectively. Diaeretiella rapae reared on M. persicae was larger than when reared on L. erysimi and B. brassicae, and females of D. rapae were significantly larger than males on M. persicae, but males of D. rapae were larger than females when reared on L. erysimi. No difference in size was detected between males and females in parasitoids reared on B. brassicae. Among the aphid species studied, M. persicae was found to be the most suitable to D. rapae.

The occurrence of aphids was evaluated on lettuce hydroponically grown at the Escola Agrotécnica of the State University of São Paulo (UNESP) located in Jaboticabal County, State of São Paulo, Brazil, from January to December 1999. The total number of each species of aphids present in weekly samplings performed during the period was found to be correlated with the average temperature recorded within the respective sampling period. The occurrence of three species, Uroleucon ambrosie (Thomas), Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas) was recorded, with the highest population densities being coincident with mean temperatures below 21.5°C. The highest population densities of U. ambrosie occurred from May to June. In the second week of May and third week of November, two maximum population peaks were recorded for M. persicae. The species M. euphorbiae was predominant over the others and the highest populations of this species were observed from May to June and from late July to early September. A negative correlation was found between populations of aphids and temperature. This correlation, however, was statistically significant only for M. euphorbiae and U. ambrosiae.


A ocorrência de afideos foi avaliada em alface cultivada hidroponicamente na área de produção da Escola Agrotécnica da Universidade Estadual de São Paulo (UNESP), em Jaboticabal, São Paulo, de janeiro a dezembro de 1999. Foi constatado que o número total de cada espécie de afideo, presentes em amostragens conduzidas semanalmente durante o período, foi correlacionada com a média de temperaturas registradas dentro do período de amostragem. Foi registrada a ocorrência de três espécies de afideos, Uroleucon ambrosiae (Thomas), Myzus persicae (Sulzer) e Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas), sendo as maiores densidades populacionais coincidentes com médias de temperaturas inferiores a 21,5°C. As maiores densidades populacionais de U. ambrosiae ocorreram de maio a junho. Na segunda semana de maio e na terceira semana de novembro foram registrados dois picos populacionais máximos de M. persicae. A espécie M. euphorbiae predominou sobre as demais e as maiores populações dessa espécie foram observadas nos períodos de maio a junho e final de julho a início se setembro. Foi constatada correlação negativa entre populações de afideos e temperatura. Esta correlação, entretanto, foi estatisticamente significativa somente para M. euphorbiae e U. ambrosiae.
