RESUMO

Hyperkeratosis of the nipple and areola is a rare condition characterized by verrucous thickening and brown pigmentation of the nipple and areola, with variants involving both or alone. The most common type is a nevoid form which occurs more often in women of childbearing age. We report a 62-year-old man with bilateral hyperkeratosis of areola. He has no history of endocrinopathy or exogenous hormonal therapy. Also, he had no other additional hyperkeratotic condition. The present case is a nevoid form by the Levy-Franckel classification and interesting in that it developed in an old man without any underlying disease, just confined to both areolas.

RESUMO

Hyperkeratosis of the nipple and areola is a rare condition. We report a case of hyperkeratosis of the nipple and areola occurrinp in man with no underlying endocrirop thy or synthetic estrogenic drug therapy. The patient was not associated with epidermal nevus orichthyosis and so fitted into the nevoid form of hyperkeratosis of the nipple and areola. The clinical appearance and histological findings of the lesion were the same as those reported before. He showed a slight improvement in the color and hyperkeratcsis of the nipple and areola with 6 months use of a topical keratolytic agent and corticosteroid crearn.

RESUMO

Hyperkeratosis of the nipple and areola is a rare skin disordr characterized clinically by thickening and discoloration of the skin of the areola and/or nipple and pathoiog cally by papillomaosis or acanthosis-nigricans like changes. We report a case of hyperkeratosis of the nipple and areola occuring in a woman with no underlying endocrinopathy and no other additional hyperkeratotic conditions. Ttie iresent case seems to be the nevoid form by the Levy-Franckel classification. Treatment with topical medications including steroids and keratolytic agents produced no improvement. Therefore we recommeneded surgical excision because the paient was greatly disturbed by the appearance of the lesions. Surgical excision and full thickness skin graft were performed sucessfully.
