Trichorrhexis nodosa is the most common hair shaft anomaly in which there is a chemical or physical traumatic injury, characterized by the development of node-like swelling, fragility of the shaft and paint brush effect on the side of the fracture. We report two cases of trichorrhexis nodosa in 15-year-old girl and 16-year-old-boy, occurring as results of repetitive hot-comb straightener and excessive scratching. Scanning electroscopic findings are typical to trichorrhexis nodosa.

Trichorrhexis nodosa is the most common hair shaft anomaly in which there is a distinctive response to injury. The hair is fragile and on examination pale `node-like' swelling may be observed. It may affect normal hair following excessive or repeated trauma, or may occur after minimal trauma if there is an inherent defect in keratin synthesis causing abnormally brittle hair. We report a case of localized trichorrhexis nodosa in a 42-year-old male who had scratched frequently for the relief of the pruritus in the parietal area. Scanning electron microscopy revealed longitudinal fissures and fracture in the cortex. A paint brush effect was noted at the site of fracture.

We report a case of trichorrhexis nodosa in a 27-year-old male. Scanning electron microscopic findings reveals those of typical trichorrhexis nodosa nodal swelling of affected hair showed longitudinal fissures and fractures in the cortex. A paintbrush effect was noted at the site of fracture. Simple avoidance of trauma gave some regrowth of hairs.
