RESUMO

Acute suppurative parotitis is a very rare ailment to be encountered in the neonatal period. Here, we report a 13-day old hemodynamically stable neonate, who presented to us with bilateral tender, erythematous parotid swelling and purulent discharge exuding from stensen's duct. He was exclusively breast fed and had no other risk factors. Provisional diagnosis of acute suppurative parotitis was made with clinical examination. On investigating, there was neutrophilic leukocytosis, elevated acute phase reactants, ultrasonogram showed hypoechoic areas and a heavy growth of Staphylococcus aureus was isolated on pus culture. Baby underwent incision and drainage on the day of admission and was started on appropriate parenteral antibiotics along with supportive management. There was a significant clinical response over next 24 hours. He was doing well throughout the hospital stay and antibiotic course was completed based on culture sensitivity pattern. He neither had any immediate complications during hospital stay nor developed any late complications on follow up. Prognosis of the condition is excellent with adequate timely management. Authors would like to report this case for its rarity and to emphasize on fact that though the condition is uncommon, acute neonatal parotitis should be included in the differentials of any unilateral or bilateral neonatal parotid swelling, as early diagnosis and prompt management of this entity is mandated for a favorable outcome and to limit complications drastically.

RESUMO

Neonatal suppurative parotitis(NSP) is an uncommon illness in the neonate. Here, to the best of our knowledge we describe first case of newborn who developed NSP due to acenatobacter species and was treated successfully with antibiotics.

RESUMO

A thirty five year old patient presented with swelling in parotid region. After surgical removal and histopathological examination unicentric lymphoproliferation was observed. Further, immunohistochemical studies of CD 21 tissue marker confirmed Castleman’s Disease. The disease most commonly involves the mediastinum and neck but the involvement of the parotid gland region is very rare, being reported first time from Chhattisgarh State.

RESUMO

Snakebite is a common medical emergency in India. Unusual complications may occur after viper bite. Bilateral parotid enlargement after viper bite is a rare entity. An 18-year old gentleman presented to our hospital with history of viper bite. On examination he had cellulitis of right lower limb. He developed swelling of both the parotid glands 12 h after admission. He developed coagulopathy, acute renal failure and died within 48 h of hospital admission. Development of parotid swelling after snake bite is associated with poor prognosis. This case is found worth reporting as it is an unusual complication having prognostic value.

RESUMO

Kimura’s disease (KD) is a rare, benign chronic inflammatory disease of unknown aetiology, typically presents in the Orientals as subcutaneous masses in the head and neck region that could be easily misdiagnosed as a malignant tumour, leading to unnecessary radical surgery or intensive cytotoxic therapy. It has been mainly reported in the Chinese and Japanese literature. It is difficult to diagnose before tissue biopsy and fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) has limited value. Hence, unless the pathologists are aware of this entity, it might be mistaken as a malignant lesion. We encountered a case of KD in a Malay patient presenting as a parotid mass that was initially diagnosed as Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HL). This disorder should be suspected in young male Asian patients presenting with a painless unilateral mass in the head and neck region with associated hypereosinophilia.

RESUMO

Parotid gland swelling in association with general anesthesia is an unusual complication. Benign postoperative parotid swelling should be recognized as a noninfectious, self-limiting process occurring immediately after surgery. This enlargement is non-tender, rubbery in consistency, without crepitus, and may be accompanied by variable salivation. The mechanism of the occurrence remains unknown, but two factors most frequently associated with this phenomenon appear to be physical stimulation or manipulation of the airway or coughing and/or straining. We report bilateral parotid gland swelling in a middle-aged man after surgery under general anesthesia.
