RESUMO

Objective:To explore the relationship among illness perception, patient activation and self-management in patients with lung cancer, and to investigate the mediating effect of patient activation between illness perception and self-management.Methods:A total of 270 inpatients with lung cancer were selected by convenience sampling method. They were investigated by self-made social demographic questionnaire, brief illness perception questionnaire(BIPQ), patient activation measure(PAM13)and cancer patient self-management scale.SPSS 26.0 software was used for data analysis.T-test, analysis of variance, Pearson correlation analysis and mediating effect test were used for statistical analysis. Results:A total of 255 questionnaires were collected effectively. The total score of illness perception, patient activation and self-management in patients with lung cancer were (41.91±7.94), (62.31±16.39)and (142.20±20.59) .The total score of illness perception of lung cancer patients was significantly negatively correlated with the total score of patient activation and patient self-management( r=-0.652, P<0.01; r=-0.762, P<0.01), and the total score of patient activation was significantly positively correlated with the total score of self-management in patients with lung cancer( r=0.746, P<0.01). Patient activation had a partial mediating effect between illness perception and self-management in patients with lung cancer, and the mediating effect accounted for 37.10% of the total effect. Conclusion:Patient activation plays a partial mediating role between illness perception and self-management in lung cancer patients, and it is an important protective factor for patients to actively participate in self-management of disease. On the basis of assessing the illness perception and patient activation of lung cancer patients, medical staff can timely correct the negative illness perception and help them establish and maintain a high positivity level to improve their self-management.

RESUMO

In a country like India with a large population, with diverse culture, socioeconomic status and educational levels, there is a need to translate a Patient Activation Scale Measure (PAM®13) into a regional language which will reduce the language barrier, increases the understanding of patient’s disease condition, and improves their self-management skills. Hence, a reliable and validated instrument ‘Patient Activation Measure (PAM®13)’ is used for evaluating patient’s awareness, skills, and trust in self-management of disease. We wanted to translate and validate the PAM®-13 questionnaire in Kannada language and assess activation levels in diabetes mellitus patients. METHODSA cross-sectional analysis done among 200 adults with diabetes mellitus who speak Kannada. Patients of diabetes mellitus, aged 18 - 85 years from both sexes were included in the study. The PAM®-13 – was translated as recommended by World Health Organisation’s procedure for cross-cultural validation and adaptation of self- report measures. This involved forward translation, synthesis, backward translation, pre-testing and the final version which was performed by the professionals of Kannada and English language. Data was analysed using SPSS ver. 24.0 for mean, median, standard deviation, Pearson’s correlation and Spearman’s correlation. Stata 14 was used to analyse internal consistency using Cronbach’s Alpha, inter-item, inter-rest, inter-test correlation. RESULTSWe found that the mean of the Kannada version of the PAM®-13 was 55.68. The level of internal consistency was good (α=0.8357). CONCLUSIONSPAM® -13 in Kannada language has been demonstrated to be a valid and reliable measure of patient activation in the diabetic population and the present study suggests good psychometric properties.

RESUMO

@#Introduction: The Patient Activation Measure (PAM) is one of the most extensively used, widely translated, and tested instruments worldwide in measuring patient activation levels in self-management. This study aimed to determine the validity and reliability of the PAM-13 Malay version among patients with Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) attending a primary care clinic. Methods: This work is a cross-sectional validation study among patients with MetS attending a university primary care clinic in Selangor. The PAM-13 Malay version underwent a validation process and field testing. Psychometric properties were examined using principal component analysis (PCA) with varimax rotation, scree plot, Monte Carlo simulation, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability analyses. Results: The content of the PAM-13 Malay version and the original version were conceptually equivalent. The questionnaire was refined after face validation by 10 patients with MetS. The refined version was then field-tested among 130 participants (response rate 89.7%). The Kaiser–Meyer– Olkin test was 0.767, and Bartlett’s test of sphericity was ≤0.001, indicating sampling adequacy. Two factors were identified and labeled as (1) Passive and Building Knowledge, and (2) Taking Action and Maintaining Behavior. These labels were chosen as they were conceptually consistent with the items representing the levels of activation in PAM-13. The validated PAM-13 Malay version consisted of 13 items, framed into two domains. The overall Cronbach’s α was 0.79, and the intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.45. Conclusions: The PAM-13 Malay version is valid, reliable, and fairly stable over time. This questionnaire can be used to evaluate the levels of activation among patients with MetS in primary care in Malaysia.

RESUMO

Aim:The main aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of malaria parasite and the abundance of malaria vectors in and around the university hostels. Place and Duration of Study:The study was carried out in some selected hostels of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, from the month of March to September,2018. Methodology:One hundred and fifty (150) students which volunteered from the selected hostels were tested for malaria parasite. Questionnaire on the frequency of clinical symptoms were distributed to these students. Indoor resting mosquitoes were collected through pyrethrum spray-sheet collection (PSC).Larval sampling was carried out for the immature stages of mosquitoes. Results:Of the students examined for malaria parasite, 135 (90%)showed positivity to the parasite. From the questionnaire distributed, 30 (20%) of the students were treated for malaria every 3months, 20(13.3%) every 6 months, 24 (16%) before resuming school, and 76(50.7%) only treated when they developed clinical malaria. Two hundred and two (202) mosquito larvae were collected from their breeding habitats during larval sampling and two hundred and four (204) adult mosquitoes of different species were collected indoors. However there was no significant difference between the number of rooms sampled and the number of mosquitoes collected at 5% level of significance (x2tab > x2cal; 9.488 >6.307).Conclusion:The study revealed that the students living in the hostels were highly exposed to malaria infection and a host of other mosquito borne diseases. The abundance of Anophelesgambiaesensu lacto in the university environment and the high prevalence rate of malaria is an indication of continuous transmission in the area. Therefore re-echoed awareness campaigns on the danger of malaria infection and its prevention and control through personal and environmental management should be carried out to educate all students especially those who attended medical check-ups during registration. was led on 423 Type II diabetic patients going to diabetic facilities at emergency clinics in Addis Ababa. Study members were chosen by utilizing orderly arbitrary examining procedure. A pre-tried organized survey was utilized to gather the information. Understanding Activation Measure (PAM-13) was utilized to survey tolerant actuation levels. Information were entered and dissected utilizing SPSS rendition 23 for windows. Concentrate members' qualities were portrayed as far as mean (Standard deviation) and recurrence (extent). Bivariate examination and various calculated relapse investigations were completed to recognize free factors related with patient enactment among sort II diabetes patients. Results:The mean (SD) age of the study participants was 55.7(±9.8) years. Majority of the study participants, 319 (77.8%) had low meal planning knowledge, 62.4% of patients involved in low physical activity and 82.2% had poor glycemic control. About 75.6% of the patients had low activation and the remaining 24.4% had high activation. The independent factors associated with lower activation were Illiterate educational status (AOR=2.4, 95% CI: 1.5-3.3), low physical activity (AOR=1.8, 95% CI: 1.4-2.9), low meal planning knowledge (AOR=1.5, 95% CI: 1.3-2.4), chronic comorbidities (AOR=2.1, 95% CI: 1.6-3.9) and poor glycemic control (AOR = 4.2, 95% CI: 2.4–7.5).Conclusions:The findings revealed that majority of diabetic II patients had low activation; indicating patients had low knowledge and understanding regarding the influence of lifestyle in diabetes management. Illiterate educational status, low physical activity, low meal planning knowledge, chronic comorbidities and poor glycemic control were significantly associated with lower activation

RESUMO

Objective@#To explore the present perceptions of patient-empowering nurse behaviours, self-efficacy and patient activation among patients with chronic diseases, and analyze the influencing mechanism among these three variables.@*Methods@#Using convenient sampling method, a total of 485 inpatients with chronic diseases were sampled from two tertiary comprehensive hospitals in Guangzhou on the day of discharge between March and October 2017. They were surveyed with the demographic questionnaire, Patient Perceptions of Patient-Empowering Nurse Behaviours Scale , Chronic Disease Self-Efficacy Scale and Patient Activation Measure.@*Results@#Empowerment could positively predict self-efficacy (β=0.402, P<0.01) and patient activation (β=0.169, P<0.01). Self-efficacy could also positively predict patient activation (β=0.887, P<0.01). And self-efficacy, of which the effect accounted for 67.87% of the total effect, played a partial intermediary role between empowerment and patient activation.@*Conclusions@#To improve patient activation, empowerment and self-efficacy should be both emphasized and applied by the nurses, so that patients can move smoothly from a care receiver before discharge to one of self-management.
