RESUMO

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a notifiable and reportable disease recognised by the Office Internationale Epizooties (OIE) and penned for eradication by 2030. It is an endemic and devastating disease of small ruminants in some countries of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The disease militates against small ruminant production and increased flock numbers in the region. Information and literature on the current review was especially obtained and compiled from CABI abstract data base, PubMed, Scopus, Elibrary USA and other online publications. This review highlights the viral structure, epidemiology, predisposing factors, clinical signs, pathology, immunoprophylaxis, diagnostic techniques and therapeutics of the disease with a view to generating increased scientific research interests on PPR. It is hoped that more robust scientific research breakthroughs could emerge particularly in the area of immunoprophylaxis, rapid penside diagnosis, and alternative therapeutics such as the use of probiotics. This will in no small measure boost small ruminant production, alleviate poverty and increase food security in countries endemic with the disease.

Contemporary neurosciences continue to separate the act of seeing in the processes of vision and the processes of ocular motor skills, without even proposing a unifying explanation of both aspects of the same reality: as the act of looking. The aim of this article is to explain the act of looking through the series of neurological events that occur and to understand that one looks with consciousness. Visual processes are explained based on the contemporary neuroscientific approach and Informational Sociobiological Theory in Nicolas Poussin's "The Plague of Azoth". While the traditional explanation traditional explanation of neuroscience refers that every stimulus activates a receptor, following a nervous path to the brain, from the Informational Sociobiological Theory, the act of looking is an epiconscious activity, a construction that results from the sum emerging from the five levels of complexity. These integrate this process in the movements that describe the eyes and the action of what is seen simultaneously. "The Plague of Azoth" shows a city plagued by the bubonic plague, with two traits: a divine curse and the presence of breathable miasmas. Poussin not only painted the grounds for a magical (traditional) and scientific explanation, but also for a technological (bacteriological) explanation that would emerge two centuries after his death. In conclusion, the act of looking from the Informational Sociobiological Theory is a process that begins in the neocortex and that integrates information at five levels. This explanation allows us to understand "The Plague of Azoth" as an advanced technological approach.

RESUMO

@#Peste des petits ruminants(PPR)is an acute and highly contagious disease caused by peste des petits ruminants virus(PPRV),which mainly infects goats and sheep with high morbidity and mortality. Because of its serious pathological damage and wide spread,PPR has caused huge economic losses to the aquaculture industry and international trade in various countries,so it is particularly important to establish a rapid and accurate detection method for the prevention and control of the disease. This paper reviews the progress in research on biological detection techniques for PPRV detection, such as routine RT-PCR,routine multiplex PCR,real-time fluorence quantitative PCR(RT-qPCR),pyrosequencing,nested PCR(nPCR),loop-mediated isothermal amplification(LAMP)and recombinase polymerase amplification(RPA),so as to provide bases and ideas for scientific detection and identification of PPRV.

RESUMO

A simple, fast, and visual method for detecting antibodies against peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) using colloidal gold strips was developed. In this study, the pET-32a-N was transformed into Escherichia coli Rosetta (DE3) for expression. Hybridoma cell lines were generated by fusing SP2/0 myeloma cells with splenocytes from immunized mice with the expressed and purified N protein of PPRV. The PPRV N protein was labeled with colloidal gold particles as the gold-labeled antigen. The N protein served as the gold standard antigen and as the test (T) line-coated antigen, while the monoclonal antibody served as the quality control (C) line-coated antibody to assemble the colloidal gold immunochromatographic test strips for detecting antibodies against the N protein of PPRV. Hybridoma cell line designated as 1F1 was able to stably secrete the monoclonal antibody against the N protein of PPRV. The titer of 1F1 monoclonal antibody in ascites was 1:128 000 determined by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), and the immunoglobulin subtype of the monoclonal antibody was IgG1, with kappa chain. The obtained monoclonal antibody was able to specifically recognize the N protein of PPRV, as shown by Western blotting and indirect immunofluorescent assay (IFA). The developed colloidal gold test strip method was able to detect PPRV antibodies specifically, and there was no difference between different batches of the test strips. Testing of a total of 122 clinical sera showed that the compliance rate of the test strip with ELISA test was 97.6%.The test strip assay developed in this study has good specificity, reproducibility, and sensitivity, and it can be used for the rapid detection of PPRV antibodies.

RESUMO

@#Peste des petits ruminants(PPR)is a highly contagious disease with high mortality which is caused by peste des petits ruminants virus(PPRV)infection and leads to enormous economic losses for sheep husbandry both at home and abroad. The knowledge of interactions between PPRV and host cells is the basis of understanding of the pathogenesis and the prerequisite of disease prevention and control. This paper reviews the studies on the activation of host innate immune response by PPRV infection, the immune evasion of PPRV mediated by viral protein products, and the induction of apoptosis, autophagy and inflammasome resistance to virus, which provides a reference for further discussion on the immune evasion of PPRV and the key nodes involved in the interaction between PPRV and the host, thus providing theoretical guidance for effective prevention and control of PPR transmission.

The existence of high-risk biological agents such as the classical swine fever virus for the production of veterinary vaccines, among others of equal importance for our country and the region in general, justifies good management of biological safety, since ignorance of the risk on part of the personnel who work in them, can cause contamination with serious consequences both at personal and environmental level, causing fatal accidents. The objective of the research was to carry out an analysis of the perception of existing risk in the personnel responsible for the production process of the vaccine against classical swine fever. The application of RISKPERCEP in the classical swine fever vaccine production facility showed as results the behavior of different variables that make evident the high underestimation of the existing risk in the evaluated personnel and that there is a need to deepen the training in biosafety to all staff working in the process. Finally, these issues and their importance to improve the quality of production in these processes are related, as well as to increase knowledge about biological risk at all levels(AU)

The history of humanity narrates successive plagues that have struck different geographical areas, always sowing death among the populations, decimating thousands of people. We know this thanks to the writings of historical figures who have reported these long periods of infection, contagion and death since at least the 5th century b.C., when the first plague on the European continent, known as the Athens Plague, broke out.Over the centuries that followed, there are reports of plague reappearances, striking the great cities of that time. More recently, the 20th century, although characterized by the development of a panoply of increasingly effective drugs, is still the stage for the emergence of new epidemics. The present 21st century is already indelibly marked by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the remarkable advances in biotechnology, the constant mutations of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and inevitable uncertainties arising from it puts us in a position analogous to that of our ignorant ancestors regarding plagues that plagued them.

Abstract The Chilean Abbe Ignacio Molina (1740-1829) developed a brilliant career as naturalist in the University of Bologna, where he arrived when the Jesuit Order was expelled from the Spanish colonies in 1767, until he was accused of heresy because some ideas about evolution expressed in one of his late works, at the same time with Lamarck and 44 years before Darwin. In his youth Molina was affected in a severe way by smallpox, leaving us in two poems a vivid story of his suffering, not only by the disease itself but also for the useless therapeutic measures, some disagreeable, like enemas; other injurious, as bleeding and topic vinegar of the four thieves. A handful of the more significant verses from the two Latin Elegies "De peste variolarum" and "De peste variolis vulgo dicta" is analyzed: its literary value is scarce, its reading is bored, and its real merit only historic.

Abstract The comparative efficacy of different chemotherapeutic regimes in the treatment of natural clinical infection of Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) infection in West African Dwarf (WAD) goats were determined. Twenty WAD male goats divided into five groups, of four each were used. Group 1 was the combined therapy group treated with Acyclovir, Oxytetracycline and Ivermectin, Group 2 was treated with Acyclovir only, Group 3 was treated with Ivermectin only, Group 4 was treated with Oxytetracycline only and Group 5 was left untreated. Clinical signs such as nasal and ocular discharges, emaciation, anorexia, pyrexia, ulcerative oral lesions, respiratory distress and diarrhoea were observed in these goats during the period of their acclimatization. The prominent post-mortem lesion observed was discontinuous streaks of congestion (Zebra markings) in the mucosa of the colon and rectum. The physiologic parameters (temperature, pulse rate, heart rate, and respiratory rate) were taken daily. It was observed that there was a significant increase in the temperature above normal in the untreated group, suggesting pyrexia. It was also observed that the combined therapy group showed a smaller number of mortality and thus, had a better efficacy when compared to the other chemotherapeutic agents used singly.

Introduction: Epidemics have placed our species at risk from ancient times to the present and will surely continue to challenge us in the future. Therefore, it is reasonable to look through the history of these threats to find the keys to their origin and development. Objective: To find the keys that help to interpret the major epidemics of the past. Method: Logical-historical method applying criteria related to pandemic to documented events. Development: A total of 10 well-documented pandemics were analyzed following the historical sequence, starting with the plague of Athens (430 BC) and ending with COVID-19. The disease and the germ were specified in seven of them. In the remaining three, there is no absolute certainty of the germ. The factors that facilitated the contagion included: disasters, climate changes, wars, trade routes, overcrowding, famine and lack of hygiene. Antecedents of isolation, quarantine and hygiene measures were found, whose non-compliance had fatal experiences in the past. All epidemics influenced on changes in post-epidemic society. Conclusions: Rational confrontation with epidemics encompasses the integration of knowledge of the disease and contagion with other factors. The study of the past is useful to obtain information about antecedents and experiences of the most effective measures and to avoid mistakes that have been repeated(AU)

Abstract Between the 2nd and 3rd centuries the Roman Empire suffered two great plagues, the Antonine Plague, of which there is a bibliography, and the lesser known Plague of Cyprian. As an overview, both pandemics resemble the crisis that in 2020 the Coronavirus is generating in many aspects of human life. This article focuses on the impact that the Cyprian plague had in the context of the crisis of the third century, its mortality is estimated between 10-20% of the population in the affected places, finally its effects generated several of the necessary conditions for the transition from the ancient to the medieval world. It is about understanding how the cycle of plagues that went from the 2nd century to the 3rd century changed the appearance of the Roman world and what lessons history gives us 1700 years later.

ABSTRACT Plague is a re-emerging disease caused by the bacteria Yersinia pestis. Humans usually get the disease through the bite of an infected flea. Plague is a fulminant systemic disease, with pneumonic plague being the most lethal form. Late diagnosis is one of the main causes of mortality and spread of the disease, as it limits the effectiveness of control measures. We present the case of a 42-year-old male, who had previously traveled to an endemic plague area and then presented hyperpyrexia, hypotension, and inflammatory inguinal adenopathy. Despite the very characteristic clinical picture, nobody (before admission to our hospital) suspected plague. An effective combination of antibiotics and intensive treatment was initiated only on the fifth day of illness. The patient went into septic shock, respiratory failure, and death. Plague was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This case emphasizes the importance of having a high suspicion rate for plague.

ABSTRACT The corn crop is the second largest cereal in Colombia with 21.9 % of the total area produced. The plague Spodoptera frugiperda, attacks the plant from the first weeks of growth, devouring its leaves, stalk and grains; decreasing crop yield. This pest is controlled by the non-controlled use of synthetic pesticides such as, carbofuran, chlorpyrifos and atrazine. In this research, the extracts of Azadirachta indica, Piper nigrum, Petiveria alliacea and their mixtures; and extracts of Nicotiana tabacum, Lippia alba, Allium sativum and their mixtures, were applied as bioplaguicides in corn plants. The application was performed twice a day each two days for seven weeks, after of third week of growth (when the larvae were first observed). The number of dead larvae, plant height and damage in leaves and stems were the study variables. The treated plants grew twice and their degree of affection, according to the Mihm scale, was lesser than plants in the control group. The efficiency percentages of the six plant species and its mixture were representative (>80 %), in according to Henderson and Tilton, resulting in these plant extracts are a viable alternative for pest control of S. frugiperda.

Introduction: The bubonic plague affected much of the world in the first half of the twentieth century, causing from small outbreaks to large epidemics. In Cuba, it appeared twice in 1912 and in 1914 causing some morbidity and mortality. Objective: To rescue the history of bubonic plague's epidemics in Cuba. Methodology: Qualitative, using as theoretical methods the historical- logic and the documentary analysis. Statistics were reviewed in the Department of Statistics and Medical Records of the Ministry of Public Health, in articles of the time, in guidelines and plans to confront the epidemic established by the National Department of Health of the Secretariat of Health and Charity, and also reports written by the health workers who participated in the control strategies of this disease. Results: In 1912, there were outbreaks in Havana, Santiago de Cuba and Pinar del Rio imported from the Canary Islands. In the second epidemic in 1914 that was eradicated in 1915, there were 68 cases and 23 deaths. A control strategy was designed, which included the entry and isolation of the suspects, surveillance of the residents in the area, collection of rats, disinfection, sanitation and deratization of the affected area. Conclusions: The measures taken were timely and efficient for controlling the epidemic. No more cases have occurred since July, 1915(AU)
