Introduction: the National School of Public Health has the mission of forming Doctors of Philosophy in health sciences, since the rise of the number of professors having this category assures the availability of highly scientific staff for the conduction of research works related to the social approach of health. Objectives: to describe the formative strategy of PhD in health sciences aimed at the ENSAP professors and to show some of the results in 2013. Methods: a cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted with the total number of professors. The heads of the teaching departments were asked to answer a questionnaire that would explore the situation of each educator in the process of doctoral formation and discussion groups were formed to identify the actions that the departments had carried out. Results: over 30 % of professors were Doctors of Philosophy in Health Sciences. Fifty nine of those who had not achieved this category, were involved in some of the stages of the formation process. Eight of the eleven teaching departments had professors who were registered in the PhD formation program. There were some departments in which the rate of doctors were high whereas others exhibited lower rates, but some of their staff members had already started the PhD studies. Conclusions: it was found that the systematic control of this strategy was in place, which has contributed to significantly increase the number of professors attaining the scientific degree and to encourage those who are not to be involved in the process. All these aspects are part of the work plans of the professors and are also taken into account for their individual evaluation.
