En la actualidad cada vez más familias optan por seguir una alimentación basada en plantas (ABP). Es fundamental que pediatras y agentes de salud conozcan estos tipos de patrones alimentarios para asesorar adecuadamente a sus pacientes y derivarlos oportunamente a especialistas capacitados con el objetivo de garantizar un adecuado crecimiento y desarrollo principalmente en la edad pediátrica, evitando posibles consecuencias negativas sobre la salud. La mayoría de las sociedades científicas del mundo considera a las dietas vegetarianas apropiadas para todas las etapas de la vida si están correctamente planificadas, suplementadas y con un seguimiento adecuado por especialistas capacitados. Con respecto a las dietas veganas existen controversias por parte de las distintas sociedades con respecto a si son adecuadas o no en pediatría. Recientemente se han revisado las descripciones respecto a las tipificaciones de una ABP y se ha propuesto una definición estándar de estos tipos de dieta. Los riesgos más significativos asociados a la mala planificación de estas dietas son las deficiencias de calcio, vitamina D y vitamina B12, aunque también se debe tener en cuenta el estado del zinc, selenio, yodo y los ácidos grasos Omega 3. Es importante la planificación diaria de un plato nutricionalmente completo y es incuestionable que quienes siguen estos patrones alimentarios reciban suplementos con vitamina B12 adecuados para cada etapa de la vida. Se requieren más estudios en pediatría para evaluar los efectos de las distintas ABP sobre la ingesta de nutrientes, el estado nutricional, el crecimiento, desarrollo y la prevención de enfermedades no transmisibles (AU)


Currently, an increasing number of families are choosing to follow a plant-based diet (PBD). It is essential that pediatricians and healthcare agents know these types of dietary patterns in order to properly advise their patients and refer them to trained specialists to ensure adequate growth and development, especially in the pediatric age, avoiding possible negative health consequences. Most of the world's scientific societies consider vegetarian diets appropriate for all stages of life if they are adequately planned, supplemented and monitored by trained specialists. However, there is controversy among different societies regarding the appropriateness of vegan diets for children. Recently, there has been a review of descriptions concerning the characteristics of a plant-based diet, leading to a proposed standard definition for these types of diets. The most significant risks associated with poorly planned diets are calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12 deficiencies, although zinc, selenium, iodine and omega-3 fatty acid status should also be considered. The daily planning of a nutritionally complete meal is important and it is imperative that those who follow these dietary patterns receive vitamin B12 supplementation appropriate for each stage of life. Further studies in children are needed to evaluate the effects of different PBDs on nutrient intake, nutritional status, growth, development, and prevention of noncommunicable diseases (AU)

Resumen Introducción: recientemente, se ha evidenciado gran desarrollo de variados productos destinados a la población vegetariana/vegana. Sin embargo, su valor nutricional no ha sido estudiado en profundidad. El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar aporte potencial (AP) y porcentaje de cobertura de requerimientos diarios (%RD) de hierro, calcio y zinc de alimentos dirigidos a poblaciones adolescente y adulta vegetariana/vegana. Materiales y método: se analizaron cinco medallones (4 comerciales, 1 casero) y once bebidas (9 comerciales, 4 de ellas c/jugo frutal y 2 caseras) elaborados con materias primas vegetales. Se estableció el AP de Fe, Ca y Zn en los productos considerando su contenido y dializabilidad porcentual (D%). Se calculó, para una porción de alimento, el porcentaje de cobertura del requerimiento diario de estos minerales. Resultados: el contenido de los minerales en los medallones fue: [Fe] 1,64-4,21 mg%; [Ca] 104-213 mg% y [Zn] 0,53-3,57 mg%; en las bebidas se observó: [Fe] 0,24-2,39 mg%; [Ca] 71-214 mg% y [Zn] 0,18-0,79 mg%. La D% en medallones fue: Fe 7,3-11,9; Ca 10,2-18,2 y Zn 17,0-21,4 y para las bebidas, Fe 5,2-32,8; Ca 6,4-35,7 y Zn 5,9-33,9. El %RD para adolescentes, considerando una porción de medallones fue: Fe mujeres 3,0-9,0%; hombres 5,0-16%; Ca 0,7-6,8% y Zn 1,5-3,9% y para adultos fue: Fe mujeres 3,0-10%; hombres 7,0-20%; Ca 0,6-5,8% y Zn 2,0-5,1%. Al considerar las bebidas, el %RD para adolescentes fue: Fe mujeres 2,0-28%; hombres 4,0-53%; Ca 0,4-22% y Zn 1,3-9,5%. Para adultos fue: Fe mujeres 2,0-31%; hombres 5,0-64%; Ca 0,3-19% y Zn 1,8-12%. Conclusiones: en los medallones se observó bajo %RD para los minerales estudiados. Las bebidas con agregado de jugos de naranja o manzana aportaron cantidades significativas de hierro. El %RD para zinc y calcio de los dieciséis alimentos fue bajo (ambos grupos estudiados). Consecuentemente, para cubrir los requerimientos de estos minerales habría que combinar adecuadamente los alimentos que se consumen.


Abstract Introduction: recently, there has been great development of various products aimed at the vegetarian/vegan population. However, its nutritional value has not been studied in depth. The objective of this study was to evaluate potential intake (PI) and percentage of coverage of daily requirements (% RD) of iron, calcium and zinc from foods aimed at adolescent and adult vegetarian/vegan populations Materials and method: five medallions (4 commercial, 1 homemade) and eleven beverages (9 commercial, 4 of them with fruit juice and 2 homemade) made with vegetable raw materials were analyzed. The PI of Fe, Ca and Zn was established in the products considering their content and percentage dialyzability (D%). It was calculated, for a portion of food, the percentage of coverage of the daily requirement of these minerals. Results: the mineral content in the medallions was: [Fe] 1.64-4.21 mg%; [Ca] 104-213 mg% and [Zn] 0.53-3.57 mg%; in beverages it was observed: [Fe] 0.24-2.39 mg%; [Ca] 71-214 mg% and [Zn] 0.18-0.79 mg%. The D% in medallions was: Fe 7,3-11,9; Ca 10.2-18.2 and Zn 17.0-21.4 and for beverages, Fe 5.2-32.8; Ca 6.4-35.7 and Zn 5.9-33.9. The %RD for adolescents, considering a portion of medallions was: Fe women 3.0-9.0%; men 5.0-16%; Ca 0.7-6.8% and Zn 1.5-3.9% and for adults it was: Fe women 3.0-10%; men 7.0-20%; Ca 0.6-5.8% and Zn 2.0-5.1%. When considering beverages, the %RD for adolescents was: Fe women 2.0-28%; men 4.0-53%; Ca 0.4-22% and Zn 1.3-9.5%. For adults it was: Fe women 2.0-31%; men 5.0-64%; Ca 0.3-19% and Zn 1.8-12%. Conclusions: in the medallions, low % RD was observed for the minerals studied. Drinks with added orange or apple juices provided significant amounts of iron. The %RD for zinc and calcium of the sixteen foods was low (both groups studied). Consequently, to meet the requirements of these minerals, it would be necessary to properly combine the foods consumed.

Resumen Introducción: la alimentación es uno de los factores modificables más importantes que participa en la salud ósea. Contribuye a ésta, una adecuada ingesta de calcio, vitamina D y proteínas, como así también otros nutrientes. A la alimentación basada en plantas (ABP) se le ha atribuido importantes beneficios para la salud en general, pero mal planificada podría tener efectos deletéreos sobre la salud ósea. Materiales y método: revisión narrativa con búsqueda en el sistema digital de recopilación de información biomédica PubMed cuyo objetivo fue analizar la evidencia científica disponible en la actualidad sobre el efecto de la ABP sobre la salud ósea. Resultados: dentro de los patrones de consumo de la ABP, los veganos que exhiben un consumo de calcio inferior a 525 mg/día presentan mayor riesgo de fractura por fragilidad ósea [incidencia de fractura: 1.37 (IC95%: 1,07; 1,74)]. En cambio, el papel de la hiperhomocisteinemia (HHcy) secundaria al déficit de vitamina B12 y riesgo de fractura continúa siendo controvertido en esta población. Si bien, in vitro la HHcy puede incrementar la actividad de los osteoclastos, en estudios clínicos no se observaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en los niveles de crosslaps sérico (marcador de resorción ósea) en los consumidores de ABP (vegetarianos) comparados con los omnívoros. Conclusión: una ABP bien planificada, óptima y adecuada, que cubra los requerimientos diarios de calcio, vitamina D, vitamina B12 y proteínas aportará importantes beneficios para la salud general sin afectar la salud ósea en particular, aunque se requiere de futuros estudios para una mejor comprensión de su efecto sobre aspectos específicos del sistema musculo esquelético.


Abstract Introduction: diet is one of the most significant and modifiable factors involved in bone health, as an appropriate intake of calcium, vitamin D and proteins, as well as other nutrients, contributes to this. Significant overall health benefits have been attributed to plant-based diets (PBD); however, poorly planned PBD could have detrimental effects on bone health. Materials and Method: a narrative review through a search in the digital biomedical data collection system PubMed whose objective was to analyze currently available scientific evidence about the effects of PBD on bone health. Results: within the PBD intake patterns, vegans exhibiting calcium intakes below 525mg/day are at a higher risk of fracture due to bone fragility [incidence of fracture: 1.37 (95% CI: 1.07; 1.74)]. In contrast, the role of hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) secondary to vitamin B12 deficiency and fracture risk remains controversial in this population. While in vitro HHcy osteoclast activity may increase, in clinical studies no statistically significant differences in serum crosslaps levels (bone resorption marker) were observed in PBD consumers (vegetarians) when compared to omnivores. Conclusion: a well-planned, optimal and adequate PBD, covering daily calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and proteins requirements, will provide significant benefits to the overall health condition without affecting bone health in particular, although future studies are required in order to better understand its effects on specific aspects of the musculoskeletal system.

Background: The concern about consuming healthy foods has increased in recent years. Not only are they expected to comply with essential feeding functions, but they also provide health benefits. Probiotics are one of the main functional components expected to be present in functional foods and beverages. They provide many health benefits and stand out due to their metabolic capacities and adaptability to different habitats. In addition, Quinoa seeds contain valuable quantities of quality protein and nutritional values of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, fibers, and mineral substances for which they are considered an ideal dietary alternative. Objectives: This research aimed to elaborate on a probiotic quinoa beverage, which combines the effect of enzymatic hydrolysis of the starches obtained from its seeds with lactic acid fermentation using probiotic cultures, seeking to enhance its nutritional properties and converting it into a functional beverage. Methods: For this, fermentations were carried out in three different concentrations of probiotic cultures (inoculum): 10%, 5%, 1%, and three other different fermentation times: 8, 10, and 12 hours. pH, Total titrable acidity expressed as lactic acid (%), reducing sugars, and soluble solids were measured. After that, the beverage was formulated with honey, carob, preservatives, and mango flavoring. Results: Statistical analysis indicated optimal conditions were achieved with 10% probiotic cultures and 10 hours of fermentation. The microbiological analysis confirmed the presence of probiotic microorganisms at a concentration of 108 CFU/mL. Proximal analysis indicated that the composition contained 84.6 Kcal, 19.3 g of carbohydrates, and 1.4 g of protein per 100 g of beverage. Conclusions: The probiotic quinoa beverage was produced and can be considered in the group of plant-based foods, as well as a functional beverage, since the probiotic cultures it contains contribute to maintaining the intestinal microbiota and prevent the onset of chronic diseases.


Antecedentes: La preocupación por el consumo alimentos saludables ha aumentado en los últimos años. No solo se espera que cumplan con las funciones esenciales de alimentación, sino que también brinden beneficios para la salud. Los probióticos son uno de los principales componentes funcionales que se espera que estén presentes en los alimentos y bebidas funcionales. Aportan múltiples beneficios para la salud y destacan por sus capacidades metabólicas y adaptabilidad a diferentes hábitats. Además, las semillas de quinua contienen valiosas cantidades de proteína de notable calidad, valores nutricionales de carbohidratos, proteínas, grasas, fibras y sustancias minerales por lo que se consideran una alternativa dietética ideal. Objetivos: Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo elaborar una bebida probiótica de quinua, que combina el efecto de la hidrólisis enzimática de los almidones obtenidos de sus semillas con la fermentación láctica utilizando cultivos probióticos, buscando potenciar sus propiedades nutricionales y convertirla en una bebida funcional. Métodos: Para ello se realizaron fermentaciones en tres concentraciones diferentes de cultivos probióticos (inóculo): 10%, 5%, 1%, y tres distintos tiempos de fermentación: 8, 10 y 12 horas. Se midió pH, Acidez titulable total expresada como ácido láctico (%), azúcares reductores y sólidos solubles. Posteriormente, se formuló la bebida con miel, algarrobina, conservantes y saborizante de mango. Resultados: El análisis estadístico indicó que se lograron condiciones óptimas con 10% de cultivos probióticos y 10 horas de fermentación. El análisis microbiológico confirmó la presencia de microorganismos probióticos a una concentración de 108 UFC/mL. El análisis proximal indicó que la composición contenía 84,6 Kcal, 19,3 g de carbohidratos y 1,4 g de proteína por 100 g de bebida. Conclusiones: la bebida probiótica de quinua fue elaborada y puede ser considerada en el grupo de alimentos de origen vegetal, así como una bebida funcional, ya que los cultivos probióticos que contiene contribuyen al mantenimiento de la microbiota intestinal y previenen la aparición de enfermedades crónicas.

@#Introduction: Food and fitness levels are key factors required to maintain functional life. Hence, nutrition education is crucial in spreading awareness among Sports Science students. There is a paucity of plant-based nutrition knowledge and plantbased culinary skills for fitness locally. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a valid Plant-Based Culinary Nutrition Model (PBCNM) with nutrition knowledge and basic culinary skills to improve fitness among Sports Science students. Methods: This exploratory sequential mixed method study consisted of 2 phases. In Phase 1, a three-round modified Delphi method was conducted with 13 experts to generate a questionnaire that was validated. Lawshe worksheet determined the content validity ratio (CVR) for an item. Content validity index (CVI) for each section and the overall instrument was calculated. In Phase 2, quantitative data collection and analysis addressed the research questions and research gaps leading to model development. A total of 271 undergraduate Sports Science students at higher learning institutions were recruited as respondents. Results: In Phase 1, CVR of the overall survey was 1.0 and CVI was 0.834. Subsequently, the questionnaire was pilot tested for reliability and a Cronbach’s alpha score of 0.836 was obtained for the overall questionnaire. In Phase 2, the respondents’ mean and standard deviation score for the model’s components and needs was 4.21±0.73 for items 1-15. The integration of experts’ perspectives on the need of PBCNM for fitness and feedback from respondents resulted in the development of PBCNM. Conclusion: This study highlighted PBCNM as a helpful guideline for better fitness management.

@#In inflammatory arthritis, there is inflammation of one or more joints brought about by immunologic events resulting from complex interactions of environmental trigger(s) in a genetically predisposed individual. The definitive cause of which remains unclear despite substantial research. The purpose of this article is to present a case with the diagnostic challenges associated with the rare coexistence and interplay of probable multiple causative mechanisms/triggers along with hyperuricemia and hepatitis B in the same patient presenting with inflammatory arthritis. It brings to greater attention the potential role of a key diet as an adjunct in the early management of undifferentiated inflammatory arthritis and thus, highlighting the choice of a whole food, plant-based diet (WFPBD) as a single, healthy, cost-effective and well-rounded diet which may be able to target all these different probable causative mechanisms leading to early symptom control and maybe, early disease remission. WFPB diet has been used in the management of differentiated arthritis from psoriatic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis and other types of inflammatory arthropathy but to date, there is a paucity of available evidence on managing a patient with undifferentiated inflammatory arthritis probably resulting from more than one simultaneous environmental triggers with a single key diet.

Actualmente, existe una necesidad en la industria alimentaria de buscar preservantes de origen natural que tengan una mejor aceptación por el consumidor. Una alternativa interesante que ha emergido en los últimos años es el uso de antimicrobianos naturales, los cuales además de ser efectivos en el control de microorganismos, son inocuos para la salud. La nisina es una bacteriocina producida por bacterias ácido lácticas que se utiliza actualmente como preservante en varios productos alimenticios. En Chile, el uso de la nisina como aditivo está restringido a quesos y cremas naturales o nata cuajada, pero existen otros alimentos que podrían beneficiarse del uso de este preservante, como es el caso de los aderezos tipo mayonesa vegetal. En el presente trabajo, se analiza de manera teórica, como el uso de nisina en estos aderezos impactaría el consumo máximo permitido para este aditivo en la población chilena. Para esto, se analizó cuál es el consumo teórico actual de nisina en Chile, y cómo este se vería afectado si se utilizara nisina como preservante en aderezos tipo mayonesa vegetal. Finalmente, los datos obtenidos se compararon con el valor de ingesta diaria admisible (IDA) para la nisina, evidenciándose que existe una ventana de oportunidad para el uso de nisina en otros productos alimenticios.


Currently, there is a need in the food industry for natural preservatives that have good consumers acceptance. Natural antimicrobials are a novel alternative, effective in controlling microbial growth, and safe to consume. Nisin is a bacteriocin produced by lactic acid bacteria that is currently used as a preservative in several food products. In Chile, nisin is regulated and restricted as an additive to cheeses and natural creams or curds. However, other food products could benefit from using nisin as a preservative, such as plant-based mayonnaise, where the consumer expects to find natural preservatives. In this review, we make a theoretical analysis of how adding nisin to plant-based mayonnaise would impact the daily intake of this additive in the Chilean population. Finally, we compare this data with the acceptable daily intake for nisin to conclude that there is an opportunity for using nisin as a preservative in plant-based mayonnaise without affecting consumers´ health.

Background:Herbal ingredients have been a part of human life since ancient times when they relied upon only the plants and their products for curing ailments. There is vast research on the efficacy of Ayurveda in curing diseases. However need is felt regarding extensive studies on the usage of such historic natural products in oral health care and especially in endodontics. One of the important factors for successful root canal treatment is complete eradication of microbes, which require efficient bio-mechanical preparation of root canal system. There are variety of chemical based solutions available for the purpose of endodontic irrigation. Due to various safety concerns including oral and peri-radicular toxicity, there is the need for such solutions which can be usedas their alternative. In recent years, there has been a profound increase in the literature and research regarding the use of herbal solutions as endodontic irrigants. This article aims at providing a comprehensive overview about various herbal solutions that can be used in endodontic treatment.

RESUMO

Erectile dysfunction (ED), characterized by a man’s constant or recurrent disability to obtain and/or maintain penile erection sufficient to achieve and complete satisfactory sexual intercourse, is a common ailment. Its incidence and prevalence increases with age. ED is caused by several factors -psychological factors, organic factors, and metabolic factors. ED may also be iatrogenic and related to some drugs, pelvic surgery, or radiotherapy. The main etiology is vascular in nature, with risk factors that are common to other cardiovascular diseases. Several drugs, mechanical and prosthetic devices, and surgical procedures are used to alleviate ED. Lifestyle modulation is increasingly being added as first-line treatments for ED. These include lack of physical activity and cigarette smoking. Obesity and an unhealthy quality of diet are also lifestyles that affect ED. This manuscript narratively reviews the impact of excessive caloric intake, various dietary ingredients, and special diets on ED.

Venous thromboembolism is responsible for considerable morbidity and mortality. It is estimated to be the second most common medical complication, the second most common cause of prolonged hospitalisation, and the third most common cause of excess mortality. Recurrences are common. Anticoagulation is usually given for three months. However, inefficiency and major bleeding is often noted. External compression devices and balloon or direct thrombectomy and insertion of inferior vena cava filters are also available. Increasing data indicate that diet may play an important role in preventing venous thromboembolism. Obesity, which is significantly related to diet, may contribute to 30% of all venous thromboembolism cases. Further, plant-based diets, such as the Mediterranean, prudent, and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diets are related to a lower incidence of venous thromboembolism. This manuscript reviews the published literature on the relationship of various dietary components and dietary patterns, and their impact on the development and progression of venous thromboembolism.

@#Introduction: The effects of prolonged consumption of whey protein on health are controversial. This study aimed to determine whether whey protein positively alters health parameters of overweight and obese adults. Methods: Randomised controlled trial was conducted. Fifty-eight participants, aged 30-50 years, were randomly allocated into four groups and supplemented with 50 g protein for eight weeks (group 1: plant-based protein (PBP), group 2: whey protein isolate (WPI) with cocoa powder, group 3: PBP with whey protein concentrate (WPC), and group 4: WPI with milk powder). Body composition and biochemical parameters (kidney and liver functions, inflammation, oxidative stress, and antioxidant capacity) were evaluated at pre-intervention and 8 weeks after intervention. Results: At Week 8, group 3 had lower diastolic blood pressure, waist circumference, visceral fat, and risk of insulin resistance (p<0.05 for all). Group 2 had decreased levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p<0.05 for all). A drop in triglyceride was seen in group 4 (p=0.026). Whey protein decreased alanine aminotransferase level (p=0.028), while PBP increased aspartate aminotransferase level (p=0.034). PBP or WPI with milk powder increased blood urea nitrogen level (p>0.05 for all). Interleukin-6 and lactoferrin levels fell in all groups (p<0.05), while hs-CRP increased in the PBP group (p=0.043). Group 2 experienced increased antioxidant capacity. However, levels of oxidative stress markers were significantly decreased in the PBP group and WPI with milk powder group. Conclusion: Whey protein revealed positive effects on anthropometric parameters and biochemical markers of overweight and obese adults. Therefore, proper supplementation of whey protein can potentially promote health.

Medicina del Estilo de Vida (MEV), se define como la práctica basada en la evidencia, de asistir a individuos y familias en la adopción y mantención de conductas que mejoran la salud y calidad de vida, tales como alimentación saludable, realización de actividad física periódica, sueño reparador, manejo del estrés, cese del uso de sustancias tóxicas y una sólida red de apoyo social. Esta disciplina de la medicina, ha demostrado ser efectiva en la prevención, manejo y a veces reversión de las patologías que conllevan la mayor morbimortalidad global, tales como hipertensión arterial, diabetes mellitus tipo 2, enfermedad coronaria y obesidad. Es más, se estima que el 80% de las enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles podrían prevenirse llevando un estilo de vida más saludable. Ciertas barreras estructurales han hecho que la incorporación de la MEV en las mallas curriculares universitarias y establecimientos de salud sea más lenta de lo esperado, sin embargo, cada vez son más las instituciones académicas y prestadoras de salud que adoptan los principios de la MEV, y la aparición de sociedades médicas relacionadas a esta disciplina en casi todos los continentes, están acelerando el paso hacia una medicina más focalizada en tratar las causas de la enfermedad, en lugar de centrarse en lo sintomático


Lifestyle Medicine (LM) is the evidence based practice of assisting individuals and families to adopt and sustain behaviors that can improve health and quality of life. These include healthy diet, participating in regular physical activity, having good quality sleep, managing stress, avoiding risky substance abuse and building strong social connections. LM has demonstrated its effectiveness at preventing, managing and sometimes reversing the diseases that globally carry the biggest morbidity and mortality burden, such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease and obesity. More so, it is estimated that 80% of non-communicable chronic diseases could be avoided by living a healthier lifestyle. Certain structural barriers have made LM's incorporation into the medical curriculum and clinical practice slower than expected, however, more and more academic institutions and healthcare providers are adopting LM's principles. The appearance of medical associations related to this discipline in almost every continent is accelerating the pace towards a medicine that is more centered on the root-causes of disease, rather than focusing on symptoms

RESUMEN Las dietas basadas en plantas (DBP) se caracterizan por una alta ingesta de alimentos de origen vegetal y evitan parcial o totalmente los productos animales. El objetivo de esta revisión fue recopilar evidencia sobre DBP, sus tipos y su efecto en principales factores de riesgo cardio-metabólicos (FRCM) modificables. Se encontró que existen DBP saludables y no saludables. Algunas DBP saludables son: vegetariana, mediterránea y DASH (sigla en inglés de la dieta Enfoques Alimenticios para Detener la Hipertensión). Estas promueven la ingesta de alimentos de origen vegetal "saludables" (frutas, verduras, legumbres, semillas, frutos secos, cereales integrales, palta, aceite de oliva y/o canola) y, una reducción gradual de todos los alimentos de origen animal, especialmente carnes rojas y procesadas; evitando alimentos de origen vegetal "menos saludables" (cereales refinados, fritos, productos de pastelería, alimentos con azúcar añadido). Las DBP no saludables, se caracterizan por una alta ingesta de estos alimentos "menos saludables", y se asocian con mayor riesgo cardiovascular, por el bajo aporte de antioxidantes, micronutrientes, fibra dietética y grasas insaturadas. DBP saludables pueden disminuir el riesgo de diabetes tipo 2, hipertensión arterial, sobrepeso y obesidad. Han mostrado mayores beneficios cardiovasculares en comparación con dietas tradicionales, reduciendo significativamente: HbA1c y glicemia en ayunas en diabéticos; presión arterial sistólica y diastólica en hipertensos y prehipertensos; índice de masa corporal en sujetos con sobrepeso/obesidad y mejorando el perfil lipídico en sujetos con dislipidemia. Patrones de DBP saludables, como el tipo vegetariano, mediterráneo y DASH son recomendadas para prevenir y tratar los FRCM.


ABSTRACT Plant-based diets (PBD) are characterized by a high intake of foods of plant origin and the partial or total avoidance of animal products. The objective of the current study was to compile the evidence on types of PBD and its effect on the main modifiable cardio-metabolic risk factors (CMRF). Healthy and unhealthy PBD were found to exist. Some healthy PBDs were: vegetarian, mediterranean and DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension). These promote the intake of "healthy" plant-based foods (fruits, vegetables, legumes, seeds, nuts, whole grains, avocado, olive oil and / or canola) and a gradual reduction of all foods of animal origin, especially red and processed meats; avoiding "less healthy" plant-based foods (refined, fried cereals, pastry products, foods with added sugar). Unhealthy PBDs were characterized by a high intake of these "less healthy" foods, and are associated with greater cardiovascular risk, due to the low contribution of antioxidants, micronutrients, dietary fiber and unsaturated fats. Healthy PBDs can lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, being overweight, and obesity. They have shown greater cardiovascular benefits compared to traditional diets, significantly reducing: HbA1c and fasting glycemia in diabetics; systolic and diastolic blood pressure in hypertensive and prehypertensive patients; body mass index in overweight / obese subjects and improves lipid profile in subjects with dyslipidemia. Healthy PBD patterns, such as vegetarian, Mediterranean, and DASH are recommended to prevent and treat CMRF.

RESUMEN Introducción: la popularidad de las dietas vegetarianas y veganas está aumentando en países occidentales y son adoptadas por niños, niñas y adolescentes (NNyA). Las principales asociaciones de nutrición y dietética del mundo avalan este tipo de práctica alimentaria en estos grupos etáreos si son supervisados y acompañados por profesionales idóneos. Objetivo: tomar posicionamiento como Asociación Argentina de Dietistas y Nutricionistas Dietistas acerca de la implementación de dietas vegetarianas en edad pediátrica y adolescencia, considerando recomendaciones basadas en evidencias científicas. Materiales y método: revisión y actualización bibliográfica, no sistemática con búsquedas en Google Scholar, PudMed y Medline entre diciembre 2018 y marzo 2019. Resultados: la valoración nutricional, evaluando ingesta alimentaria utilizando recordatorio de 24 horas y frecuencia de consumo, orientará sobre cuáles son las potenciales deficiencias nutricionales que puede presentar para adecuar la dieta y/o suplementación de nutrientes específicos. La alimentación vegetariana tiene una densidad energética más baja que la no vegetariana, pero se logran alcanzar las recomendaciones. Las necesidades proteicas se satisfacen fácilmente cuando la dieta incluye variedad de alimentos y las calorías son adecuadas. Algunos autores sugieren aumentar un 10 a 15% la recomendación proteica. Además, considerar el aporte de ácidos grasos omega 3 (EPA y DHA) para lograr el equilibrio óptimo entre los ácidos grasos poliinsaturados omega3/omega6. Los requerimientos nutricionales de calcio no varían con respecto a los omnívoros. Es imprescindible suplementar vitamina B12 oral a todos los NNyA vegetarianos, incluso en ovolactovegetarianos o en NNyA que consuman habitualmente alimentos fortificados. La suplementación adecuada es la mejor forma de garantizar unos niveles óptimos de esta vitamina. Se recomienda evaluar el estado de la vitamina D suplementando según edad. Conclusiones: La Asociación Argentina de Dietistas y Nutricionistas Dietistas (AADYND) plantea que la alimentación vegetariana y/o vegana planificada, supervisada y suplementada por un profesional de la nutrición idóneo, son saludables en la niñez y adolescencia. Los profesionales de la alimentación y nutrición pueden desempeñar un papel clave en la educación y acompañamiento de las personas vegetarianas acerca de fuentes específicas de nutrientes, preparación de alimentos, y modificaciones dietéticas necesarias para satisfacer sus necesidades(AU)


ABSTRACT Introduction: the popularity of vegetarian and vegan diets is increasing in western countries and are adopted by children and adolescents (Ch&A). The main nutrition and dietetic associations in the world approve this type of dietary practice in these age groups if they are supervised and accompanied by qualified professionals. Objective: take a position as the Argentine Association of Dietitians and Dietitian Nutritionists about the implementation of vegetarian diets in pediatric and adolescent age, considering recommendations based on scientific evidence. Materials and Method: review and bibliographic update, non-systematic, with searches on Google Scholar, PudMed and Medline between December 2018 and March 2019. Results: The nutritional assessment, evaluating food intake using a 24-hour reminder and frequency of consumption, will provide guidance on what are the potential nutritional deficiencies that may come up, adapt the diet and/or supplementation of specific nutrients. The vegetarian diet has a lower energy density than the non-vegetarian diet but manages to meet the recommendations. Protein needs are easily met when the diet includes a variety of foods and calories are adequate. Some authors suggest increasing the protein recommendation by 10 to 15%. Considering the contribution of omega 3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) to achieve the optimal balance between omega3/omega6 polyunsaturated fatty acids. The nutritional requirements of calcium do not vary with respect to omnivores. It is essential to supplement oral vitamin B12 to all vegetarian Ch&A, even in ovolactovegetarians or in Ch&A that habitually consume fortified foods. Proper supplementation is the best way to ensure optimal levels of this vitamin. It is recommended to evaluate the status of vitamin D by supplementing according to age. Conclusions: Argentine Association of Dietitians and Dietitian Nutritionists states that vegetarian and/or vegan food, planned, supervised and supplemented by a suitable nutrition professional, are healthy in childhood and adolescence. Food and nutrition professionals can play a key role in educating and mentoring vegetarians about specific sources of nutrients, food preparation, and dietary modifications necessary to meet their needs(AU)

Diet management is the key part in the prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD). A plant-based diet is a diet consisting mostly or entirely of foods derived from plants, with little or no animal foods. In recent years, research on plant-based diets for chronic kidney disease has been increasing. Large-scale epidemiological studies and interventional studies consistently suggest that plant-based diets could reduce the risk of CKD and related complications and slow down CKD progression. This article reviews the research progress of plant-based diets in the prevention and control of CKD.

@#Introduction: There is an emerging focus on plant-based foods that have the added advantage of being nutritious without side effects. Besides, its preparation with nutritional awareness and culinary skills could be an effective solution for improving personal fitness. This study aimed to determine validity and reliability of a questionnaire for the development of a plant-based culinary nutrition model for fitness among sports science students. Methods: This study employed exploratory sequential mixed method design and was carried out in two phases. Phase 1 employed a qualitative design utilising modified Delphi method to determine content validity index (CVI) of the questionnaire, while phase 2 was a quantitative design using Cronbach’s alpha statistical analysis to evaluate reliability of the instrument. The questionnaire consisted of the need for plant-based culinary nutrition model (Section A) and the model’s components (Section B). Thirteen expert panels from diverse expertise in sports nutrition and 30 sports science students took part. Results: Phase 1 resulted in development of a questionnaire where Section A and Section B scored CVI of 0.834 and 1.000, respectively. For phase 2, Cronbach’s alpha score for reliability of the questionnaire was 0.836 with a total of 15 items. The Cronbach’s alpha score for questionnaire items from Sections A and B were 0.709 and 0.832, respectively. Conclusion: The questionnaire developed in this study is validated and is considered reliable for use as a significant tool for plantbased culinary nutrition among sports science students.

The clinical trial aimed to study the effectiveness of a dietary supplement for respiratory system diseasestherapy. Children underwent treatment during both acute and convalescent stages, and in addition to theirprimary treatment received the plant-based dietary supplement. The new plant-based dietary supplement withingredients possessing synergetic properties was developed to supplement the normal diet and help correctmetabolism disorders in the case of respiratory diseases. The ingredients for the new dietary supplementinclude echinacea purpurea, Vitamin C, rutin, zinc, and selenium. The consistent manufacturing process used toproduce the new dietary supplement ensures that the contents are protected against adverse conditions, with thecontents delivered and released at controlled rates and under specific conditions. The study of the effectivenessand the functional properties of the plant-based dietary supplement was undertaken. Children aged from 1 to 3and treated for respiratory diseases were given ½ capsule twice a day, children aged from 3 to 7 took 1 capsuletwice a day and children aged from 7 to 14 took 1 capsule three times a day as a supplement in addition to theirprimary medical treatment. At the same time, the children from the control group underwent only primarymedical treatment. The clinical trial lasted from 10 to 14 days. During the clinical trial, regular laboratory testsand chest X-rays were carried out, and such symptoms of acute respiratory illnesses like nasal congestion,hyperaemia, sore throat, cough, wheeze as well as their duration were carefully studied. The consumption of theplant-based dietary supplement resulted in faster symptoms easing and helped relieve cough, wheeze, and nasalcongestion. The data received indicates the boost to the immune response, strengthening of the immune systemas a result of taking the plant-based dietary supplement. The plant-based dietary supplement is noted to be safeand it does not cause any adverse effects. The directions for use are developed. The mandatory StateRegistration is completed and the supplement is produced in the scientific research-to-production facilities ofthe Art-Life Scientific Production Association (Tomsk city).

Background@#Herbal medicine is a growing and innovative field in Philippine dermatology. There is a need to assess the quality of reporting of published herbal randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in dermatology since these will serve to guide rational development and use of medicinal plants in the Philippines.@*Objective@#The study aimed to assess the quality of reporting of published herbal RCTs in dermatology from the Philippines based on the hCONSORT checklist.@*Methods@#We searched MEDLINE, CENTRAL, HERDIN (from inception to 20 September 2018), and other secondary sources for published randomized controlled trials that used any herbal preparation as intervention for the treatment or prevention of a dermatologic disease or for maintenance of healthy skin, hair, or nails. We determined the percentage of reported items based from the hCONSORT checklist. @*Results@#We included 41 trials, majority of which were on infections, infestations, and bites (66%). The three most common families of herbs used were Fabaceae/Leguminosae (22%) (Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Walp. [kakawati]; Senna alata (L.) Roxb. / Cassia alata (L.) [akapulko]); Arecaceae (12%) (Cocos nucifera L. [coconut]); and Myrtaceae (12%) (Eucalyptus sp [eucalyptus], Psidium guajava L.[guava], and Melaleuca alternifolia (Maiden & Betche) Cheel [tea tree]). Most of the trials (27/41, 66%) were conducted in accredited dermatology training programs of the Philippine Dermatological Society. Only 11 trials (27%) were published in PubMED-indexed journals. More than half of articles were published after the CONSORT publication in 2006 (59%). The mean percentage of reported hCONSORT checklist items in included studies was 39.6% (SD 9.9), with only seven studies reporting more than 50% of the hCONSORT checklist items.@*Conclusion@#Published herbal RCTs in dermatology from the Philippines are poorly reported based on the hCONSORT checklist. There is a need for dissemination of the hCONSORT to local researchers and journal editors to ensure thorough and quality reporting.

Moringa oleifera Lam. (Moringaceae) is a plant with several biological activities and therapeutic properties. However, the complete knowledge about its pharmacological, biological and ecological effects, and about the active components present in each vegetable part are not still completely elucidated. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant and photoprotective activities of different extracts from leaves and flowers of M. oleifera. These activities were assessed through in vitro tests, DPPH radical scavenging method, iron ion chelating effect (FRAP), lipid peroxidation (TBARS), nitric oxide scavenging method and assessment of the activity against the lipid peroxidation through hemolytic method. The photoprotective activity was assessed through spectrophotometric analysis and through in vitro test with Labsphere. It was also determined the extract's phenolic content and total flavonoid through spectrophotometry and HPLC. The obtained results demonstrated that this species have components with antioxidant and photoprotective potential mainly in the extracts obtained from fresh leaves and flowers. Therefore, it was possible to verify that M. oleifera has potential to be used as source of antioxidant components with photoprotective activity mainly due to the presence of phenolic components and among these, the flavonoids.


Moringa oleifera Lam. (Moringaceae) é uma planta com várias atividades biológicas e propriedades terapêuticas. No entanto, o conhecimento completo sobre seus efeitos farmacológicos, biológicos e ecológicos, e sobre os componentes ativos presentes em cada parte vegetal não são ainda completamente elucidados. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar as atividades antioxidantes e fotoprotetoras de diferentes extratos de folhas e flores de M. oleifera. Estas atividades foram avaliadas através de testes in vitro, método de eliminação de radicais DPPH, efeito de quelação de íons de ferro (FRAP), peroxidação lipídica (TBARS), método de eliminação de óxido nítrico e avaliação da atividade contra a peroxidação lipídica através do método hemolítico. A atividade fotoprotetora foi avaliada através de análise espectrofotométrica e através de teste in vitro com Labsphere. Também foi determinado o conteúdo fenólico do extrato e o flavonoide total através de espectrofotometria e HPLC. Os resultados obtidos demonstraram que esta espécie possui componentes com potencial antioxidante e fotoprotetor principalmente nos extratos obtidos a partir de folhas frescas e flores. Por conseguinte, foi possível verificar que a M. oleifera tem potencial para ser utilizado como fonte de componentes antioxidantes com atividade fotoprotetora principalmente devido à presença de componentes fenólicos e entre estes, os flavonoides.
