RESUMO

Background: Prescription writing errors can lead to deficiencies in healthcare. Although prescription writing is a part of the medical students' curriculum with traditional methods, their prescribing skills are still poor due to inadequate training. To fulfil the need for new educational interventions this study aims to compare patient-based teaching with case-based teaching in improving prescription writing skills of second year MBBS students.Methods: This prospective comparative study was carried out after orientation of participants to prescription writing as per WHO prescribing guidelines (n=71). Group A (n=37) and group B (n=34) were given patient-based teaching and case-based teaching respectively of prescription writing for the same five common clinical conditions. The prescription writing skill was assessed by evaluating the prescriptions written by both the groups and scored by 19-point scoring system. Feedback from the group A students was also taken.Results: Statistical analysis of mean scores of group A (15.90) and group B (13.14) was done by Mann-Whitney U test (p<0.001). Comparison of both the groups for the individual parameters was done by Chi-square test which found significant difference in writing some important parameters like doctor’s registration no., contacts of prescriber, name of the medicine, strength of drug, dosage form, dosing instructions, total quantity of medicine and duration of medication etc. Group A students’ feedback brought out the fact that patient-based teaching is a good tool for teaching and learning.Conclusions: Patient-based teaching for prescription writing improves students’ prescription writing skills in an effective way in comparison with traditional case-based teaching.

Background: Knowledge of pharmacology forms the basis of rational pharmacotherapy practice. Teaching the medical students about systematic application of pharmacology in patients’ care forms an essential component. It facilitates the medical students to develop a methodical approach in solving patients’ clinical problems.Methods: A questionnaire-based study was conducted, at Government Medical College Rajnandgaon involving second year MBBS students. Total 100 students participated in the study.Results: Hundred percent of the students responded that pharmacology was presently taught to them, seventy nine percent of them agreed with the fact that pharmacology was preferred to pass the MBBS, eighty eight percent of them responded that in pharmacokinetics was the least preferred topic, ninety seven of them were not aware of the essential drug list. Their suggestions regarding the change in teaching methodology was recorded.Conclusions: This study concludes that efforts are needed to develop a curriculum that encompasses important aspects of clinical pharmacology and therapeutics along with incorporation of the useful suggestions by the undergraduate students.

Background: This study was developed to know the students’ views regarding personal drug (P-drug) concept in rational prescription of drugs and also giving them training of creating and using personal drug concept.Methods: 40 medical students (5th semester) divided in four groups were involved voluntarily in a three phase, questionnaire based and prospective study. In first and second phase students were taught and asked to derive P-drug using different standard text books and Current Index of Medical Specialties (CIMS) by analyzing efficacy, safety, cost and convenience of drugs used for type II diabetes mellitus. Third phase was designed to know the students’ perception regarding the exercise and difficulties faced in the process of P-drug selection. It contained demographic and 12 questions with answer using Likert scale.Results: Students selected biguanide (metformin) as a P-drug in terms of efficacy, safety, cost and convenience. 95% (36 out of 40) responded in the questionnaire, out of which 92% (33 out of 36) had given answer with mean score ?4. Overall median score was 4 and Interquartile Range was 4-5. 89% (32) strongly agreed that P-dug selection teaching helped them to understand pharmacology better. Majority (83% or 30) were in favour of introducing P-drug selection exercises in undergraduate pharmacology curriculum.Conclusions: P-drug selection exercise helped students to understand the differences among various drugs used for the treatment of type II diabetes mellitus and given them a strong foundation for developing rational use of the medicine in their future career as a doctor.

Objectives To assess the quality of paediatric prescription writing and determine the factors associated with it. Design Cross sectional descriptive study. Method Firstly, 500 paediatric prescriptions from the outpatient department (OPD) were analyzed. Secondly, 297 doctors (excluding Consultants) from the Teaching Hospital, Kalubowila, were given case scenarios and asked to write appropriate prescriptions which were analyzed. Results OPD prescriptions seemed satisfactory even though the designation and identification of the prescriber were notable omissions. In the case scenarios 20% wrote low quality prescriptions. Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) trainees wrote better prescriptions than house officers who in turn wrote better prescriptions than medical officers. Those who did paediatrics for internship produced better prescriptions than others. Out of the paediatric related examinations, diploma in child health (DCH) seemed to have a positive effect on prescription writing. Paracetamol dosage was written correctly by only 46.7% with 8.1% writing potentially toxic doses. Conclusions Much can be achieved in prescription writing. Regular in-service training and doing paediatrics for the internship appear to be remedial measures.
