RESUMO

Objective:To understand the current situation of clinical ability, professional commitment, and academic self-efficacy of undergraduate nursing interns, explore the correlation among them, and provide theoretical basis for improving the clinical competence of undergraduate nursing students. Methods:The method of convenient sampling was adopted to select 325 nursing undergraduates who had internships in a three-A hospital from July 2018 to July 2020 as the research objects. General data questionnaire, nursing mini-clinical exercise assessment scale, college student professional commitment survey scale and academic self-efficacy scale were used to investigate and evaluate the students at the end of their practice. SPSS 19.0 was used to conduct Pearson correlation analysis and multiple stepwise regression analysis. Results:The total scores of clinical ability, professional commitment and self-efficacy were (51.46±7.64) points, (88.11±5.02) points and (74.20±7.95) points respectively. The results of correlation analysis showed that the clinical ability of nursing undergraduates was significantly positively correlated with professional commitment and academic self-efficacy ( P<0.05). The multiple stepwise regression analysis further showed that the latter two factors had a positive predictive effect on clinical ability, and professional commitment was the strongest factor. Conclusion:Clinical practice teaching should pay attention to the cultivation of the professional commitment and academic self-efficacy of nursing undergraduates and thus promote the development of their clinical ability.

RESUMO

@#Introduction: Professional commitment encompasses affirmation of profession goals and values and a strong sense of profession loyalty. Nurses’ professional commitment is important as nurses represent the majority of healthcare professionals. Nurses play an essential role in maintaining patient safety and offering high care quality. This study aimed to examine the relationship of nurses’ professional commitment with patient safety and patient satisfaction about care quality in the Malaysian healthcare context. Methods: A cross-sectional design with a questionnaire was adopted using pairs of nurse and in-patient from a Malaysian university teaching hospital. The questionnaire measuring nurses’ professional commitment from Meyer and Allen’s organizational commitment scale was used. The nurses’ questionnaire also incorporated the Teng, Chang and Hsu’s patient safety scale of six adverse actions to assess the patient safety level among nurses. The questionnaire for patients utilized the Service Quality Scale by Teng, Shyu and Chang to measure the patient satisfaction about care quality. Using the online survey channel to administer the questionnaires, 170 questionnaires were filled by nurses and this was matched by 170 questionnaires being completed by patients. Pearson correlation coefficient was used for the analysis. Results: The results show that nurses’ professional commitment has a positive relationship with the patient satisfaction (r= 0.225, p= 0.003) while no significant relationship was found between nurses’ professional commitment and patient safety. Conclusion: Efforts could be made to incorporate elements of professional commitment into nursing quality training programs. Managing patient safety and service quality across ward specialties may require tailoring of service provision aspects in line with different levels of patient care needs and complexity.

RESUMO

The existence of several kinds of commitments in the workplace is well known. However, there are few studies that relate these different commitments or those established by deterministic models. This study explored the relationship between organizational and professional commitment in public higher education professors according to the multidimensional perspective of Meyer and Allen (1991), based on a convenience sample of 219 teachers. The proposed models were estimated through structural equation modeling methodology. Model 1 specified a relationship of direct influence of Professional Commitment on Organizational Commitment and Model 2 established the opposite relationship of direct influence of organizational commitment on professional commitment. Both models presented a good fit to the data without statistically significant differences between them. Nevertheless, the explanatory power of Model 1 was superior to Model 2, due to the fact that it includes a larger number of determinant relationships that are statistically significant. Theoretical and practical implications were discussed and new directions for future research were identified.
