Background and Objective: Imams, who lead prayers for Muslims, are considered among professional voice users. They have high vocal demand during their prayer times, Khutbah, and educating sessions for Muslims. The aim of this study is to explore the prevalence of voice disorders in Imams and to analyze their psychosocial aspects in relation to their profession using the Arabic Voice Handicap Index. Setting and Design: This is a cross-sectional study. Subjects and Methods: Arabic Voice Handicap Index-10 (A-VHI-10) and a general voice questionnaire were administered to 93 Imams and 82 control subjects from Riyadh city, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A-VHI-10 scores were compared between both Imams and the control group. Also, A-VHI scores of Imams were compared considering different variables included in the general questionnaire. Results: Sixty-five percent of Imams reported voice-related problems. The A-VHI-10 showed significant difference between Imams and the control group for both total score and the three VHI domains; functional, physical, and emotional. However, there was no significant difference between VHI-10 scores of the Imams group when compared considering different job-related variables. Conclusion: Sixty-five percent of Imams included in the study reported to have voice-related problems. There is a significant difference between Imams and control subjects regarding their self-perception of voice handicap. However, it appears that some psychosocial aspects of Imams’ profession have no significant impact on their voice quality.

RESUMO

Characteristics of voice problems occurring with professional voice users are not too different from those with general public. However, they react sensitively to relatively subtle changes of voice and have strong demands for their treatments as well. Consequently, treatments for the professional voice users should be implemented in the form of team approach consisting of not only otolaryngologists with plenty of treatment experience and sufficient knowledge but also speech-language pathologist, vocal coach. While treating professional voice users is burdensome and a challenging problem even to otolaryngologists rich in experience, knowledge and experience obtained through treating them will be much help for voice treatments of other general public. In this article, the authors have reviewed approaches and treatment directions for voice problems occurring with professional voice users.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The subject of voice change after uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) has been a challenging issue, because even minor changes in voice quality or articulation may be critical to a professional voice user. A number of studies reported on acoustic changes after UPPP; however, there has not been any reports concerning voice changes after laser assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP), which is a less extensive surgery compared to UPPP. This study was performed in order to analyze changes in the voice quality and nasalance after LAUP, and to provide guidance to professonal voice users who want to have snoring surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 20 patients (11 male, 9 female) who were to undergo the LAUP surgery, we measured the first and second formants of /a/, /i/, /u/ phonations, and the nasalance in rabbit, baby and mama passage. These parameters were measured preoperatively and also one month after the operation. Postoperative changes were statistically analyzed. Any subjective voice changes were asked to be reported at the visit one month after the operation. RESULTS: The second formant of /u/ phonation was significantly reduced in females. The changes in nasalance, and formants of /a/ and /i/ phonations were insignificant. No one complained of the changes in voice quality, timbre, articulation or speech. CONCLUSION: In general, there were no postoperative changes in nasalance nor any subjective feeling about voice quality after LAUP. However, changes in formant characteristics of certain vowels warrant clinicians to be more cautious in recommending LAUP for professional voice users.
