RESUMO

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine if SEM used with imaging software could be used to quantitatively determine the extent of dentine roughness due to tooth-brushing. Material and methods: Flat, polished dentine surfaces were subjected to 25,000 cycles of simulated tooth-brushing at 2 strokes per second with a load of 200 g. At the end of the brushing cycle, dentine surfaces were first assessed using profilometry and then subjected to SEM analysis. Ra (average roughness) readings were obtained for profilometric assessment. Using imaging software, the horizontal distance between adjacent characteristic grooves noted on micrographs was measured, ensuring that the middle of each crest of the associated groove was used as the reference point, the Crest-to-Crest distance (C-C distance). These two parameters were examined statistically for correlation. Results: When Spearman Rank tests were utilized the correlation between average Ra and crest to crest measurements was 0.709 (p <0.01). The Bland Altman plot, however, showed poor agreement between the two test parameters. Conclusion: Further work is needed to validate the use of this methodology in the quantitative assessment of tooth surface loss due to abrasion (AU)

Abstract This in vitro study evaluated the effect of an experimental varnish containing 20% nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) associated with 5% stannous chloride (SnCl2) against erosive-abrasive wear on bovine dentin. Samples of bovine cervical dentin were pre-eroded (0.3% citric acid, pH 2.6 for 10 minutes) and randomized into 4 groups (n=10): Control group - experimental varnish without active ingredient (CG); experimental varnish containing 20% nHAP (nHG); experimental varnish containing 5% SnCl2 (24.800 ppm Sn2+) (SnG); experimental varnish containing 20% nHAP associated with 5% SnCl2 (18.300 ppm Sn2+) (nHSnG). After applying the materials, the erosive-abrasive challenges were performed for five days. Erosive dentin loss and analysis of the pattern of dentinal obliteration were performed by 3D confocal laser microscopy. A one-way ANOVA/Bonferroni test was performed to analyze the data (α=0.05). The SnG and nHSnG experimental groups presented more effectiveness in preventing erosive wear when compared to the other groups (p<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the SnG and nHSnG groups (p = 0.731) in tooth structure dentin loss. Regarding the amount of open dentinal tubules, the highest amount of obstructed dentinal tubules was demonstrated in SnG and nHSnG (p < 0.05) when compared to the others. Between SnG and nHSnG there was no significant difference (p = 0.952) in the amount of closed dentinal tubules in the dentin. Experimental varnishes containing 5% SnCl2 associated or not with 20% nHAP showed to be a promising strategy in preventing erosive-abrasive wear of dentin. In addition, nHSnG was able to obliterate dentinal tubules.

Objective: Evaluate the protective effect of artificial saliva formulations associated or not with mucin on dentin. Materials and Methods: Bovine dentin specimens were randomly allocated to 10 groups (n = 20) according to the artificial saliva tested and the presence or absence of mucin: Amaechi et al. (1998); Klimek et al. (1982); Vieira et al. (2005) and Eisenburger et al. (2001) and deionized water (control). Samples were submitted to an erosive cycle consisting of two immersions of 120 min in the saliva, followed by 1 min in hydrochloric acid solution, and new storage in saliva for 120 min. Surface loss (µm) was measured before and after the cycle. Data were analyzed using 2-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < 0.05). Results: A significant difference was observed for the saliva formulation but not for the presence of mucin. The deionized water provided the highest surface loss and the Eisenburger's saliva formulation the lowest. The groups testing the Amaechi, Klimek, and Vieira saliva did not present significant differences. Conclusion: Eisenburger's saliva formulation provides a higher protective effect against dentin erosion. The presence of mucin did not increase the erosion-preventive effect of artificial saliva formulations. (AU)

RESUMO

Introduction: After fixed orthodontic treatment, following bracket removal, the debonding procedure should lead to restitutio ad integrum of the enamel or, at least, restore the enamel surface as closely as possible to its pretreatment condition. Adhesion of brackets in orthodontics is that they should be strong enough to prevent failure during all treatment but also low enough, so that enamel damage would be minimal during bracket removal after treatment. Material and Methods: A total of 60 premolars were collected and stored in distilled water. The extracted teeth were divided into two groups of 30 each, group A was to be bonded with self?cure adhesive while group B light cure adhesive was to be used. A standardised protocol was followed for adhering the brackets to the tooth surfaces. All the teeth were bonded with metal brackets (3M Unitek, Gemini Twin Brackets 0.022 slot). In group A, bonding adhesive (3M Unitek self cure adhesive primer) was applied. In group B, the bonding adhesive (3M Unitek light cure adhesive primer) was photopolymerized for 10 seconds after application. Results: Surface roughness of enamel as assessed by profilometry shows that light cure adhesive creates more roughness as compared to self cure adhesive. To conclude, self cure adhesive is clinically better than light cure adhesive. Discussion: In the present study enamel surface roughness were compared after debonding. Enamel surface roughness after bracket debonding depends o

RESUMO

Objective:To explore the potential relationship of urethral pressure profilometry and the complications of artificial urethral sphincter (AUS) implantation. Methods:The clinical data of patients who underwent AUS implantation in Beijing Hospital from March 2019 to March 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. All the patients were male. The average course of disease was 43.1 months(ranging 11-120 months). The average age was (68.6±13.2) years. The median number of pads used was 4.5 (3.0, 6.0). The preoperative maximum urethral pressure (MUP) was (84.6±25.5) cmH 2O, and the maximum urethral closure pressure (MUCP) was 51.0 (41.0, 74.0) cmH 2O. AUS implantation was performed through a single perineal incision in all patients. The sleeve size was mainly determined by the measured urethral circumference of the patient. After installation of all components, the urethral pressure profilometry was performed under the state of device inactivation and activation. The pump was activated 6 weeks after the operation, and telephone follow-up was performed 3 months after the activation of the device. The urinary control and complications were recorded. The results of follow-up were compared with the results of urethral pressure profilometry, and the preliminary conclusions were drawn. Results:In this study, 3 patients (20%) received 4.0cm cuffs, 10 patients (66.7%) received 4.5cm cuffs, and 2 patients (13.3%) received 5.0cm cuffs. The MUP and MUCP of AUS device in inactivated state were (82.5±30.2) cmH 2O and 51.0(48.0, 77.0) cmH 2O. In the activated state, MUP was (138.9±21.7) cmH 2O and MUCP was 109.0(94.0, 133.0) cmH 2O. Compared with that before operation, the urethral pressure in the inactivated state did not increase significantly (all P > 0.05), while the urethral pressure in the activated state increased significantly (all P < 0.001). The patients were followed-up for 3-33 months. Thirteen patients (86.7%) used the initial installation device, and all of them met the standard of social continence. One patient died of cerebrovascular accident. One patient took out the device due to urethral erosion. The incidence of complications was 26.7% (4/15), including painless hematuria in 2 cases, scrotum and penis infection in 1 case, and urethral erosion in 1 case. The MUP and MUCP of these patients were (100.0 ± 40.7) cmH 2O and (80.8 ± 39.7) cmH 2O respectively. In the intraoperative active state, the MUP was (151.5 ± 15.3) cmH 2O and the MUCP was (123.0 ± 17.2) cmH 2O. The MUP of the other 3 patients in the device activation state was significantly higher than the average value, and all of them were above 150 cm H 2O, except one patient who was infected due to cognitive problems and chronic urinary retention. In 11 patients without complications, the MUP and MUCP were (76.1±24.7) cmH 2O and (55.1±20.0) cmH 2O respectively. In the intraoperative active state, the MUP was (134.4±22.5) cmH 2O and the MUCP was (108.5±29.8) cmH 2O. Conclusions:AUS implantation has a definite curative effect. Poor comprehension, and MUP higher than 150 cmH 2O in the activated state of the device may be risk factors for complications.

RESUMO

Dental composites form the main stay in majority of the restorative procedures due to their aesthetic properties and adhesive technology. The major disadvantage with these materials is that they have less abrasion resistance and they wear on clinical service. The aim of this study was to evaluate the wear resistance of mandibular molar class-1 composite restored teeth at different intervals of time. METHODSIn this retrospective pilot study, thirty patients were randomly selected with mandibular first and second molars restored with class-1 composite restorations and were grouped according to the retrospective clinical duration of the teeth restored as 1-3 years, 3-5 years and 5-7 years. High resolution images of these restorations were captured using DSLR with macro lens attached and assessed for surface irregularities and the clinical duration of the restoration was recorded. The images were magnified using NIH-IMAGE J and processed in Adobe Photoshop and digital optical surface profilometry was used to measure the irregularities formed on the surface of the restoration. RESULTSThere was a significant increase in the mean, maximum and minimum diameter of craters and notches formed between the three groups (p < 0.05). But there was no statistically significant difference that was seen with the area of tooth assessed, length and angle of craters formed (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONSWear of the restorations increased on increased clinical duration and varied according to the dietary habits of the patients.

RESUMO

@#This study compared the surface roughness of selected tooth coloured restorative materials that were polished according to manufacturers’ instructions and Sof-Lex. It also assessed the surface roughness of polished materials after thermocycling. Filtek Z350XT, Beautifil-Bulk Restorative and Cention N, were used in this study. A stainless steel mould (10mm diameter x 2mm height) was used to fabricate 75 cylindrical specimens: 15 Filtek Z350XT (FZ), 30 Beautifil-Bulk Restorative (BB) and 30 Cention N (CN). All 15 FZ specimens were polished with Sof-Lex. Fifteen BB and CN specimens were polished according to manufacturers’ instructions. The remaining fifteen BB and CN specimens were polished using Sof-Lex. All the specimens were subjected to thermocycling (1000 cycles). Surface roughness was assessed quantitatively with profilometry after specimen preparation (Mylar stage), polishing and thermocycling. Data were analysed using SPSS version 25.0 at α=0.05. When polished according to manufacturers’ instructions, BB had the lowest mean surface roughness (Ra) values (0.13±0.01μm) followed sequentially by CN (0.14±0.03μm) and FZ (0.15±0.02μm). The differences were not statistically significant. When polished with Sof-Lex, BB exhibited the smoothest surface (0.116±0.03μm) followed sequentially by and FZ (0.150±0.02μm) and CN (0.157±0.02μm). Thermocycling caused an increase in the Ra. The differences were statistically significant. All materials tested had Ra values below the threshold value of 0.2 µm at Mylar stage and after polishing with their recommended polishing system and Sof-Lex. Thermocycling produced rougher surfaces that did not exceed the threshold Ra value. Polishability was material dependent.

RESUMO

Abstract This study evaluated gloss and color changes of esthetic restorative materials subjected to different acidic beverages. Specimens of resin composites (Z350XT (Z350), IPS Empress Direct (ED), Charisma Diamond (CD)) were prepared and the initial surface gloss and color (ΔE) were measured (n=10). Then, the specimens were immersed in 4 mL of each of the different beverages (cranberry juice; Coca-Cola; coffee or artificial saliva) during 15 min, 3x/day for 14 days and new gloss and color readings were obtained. Color change was evaluated with the ΔE formula and gloss change values were obtained by the formula: (final gloss - initial gloss). Data was submitted to two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test (a=0.05). CD showed the lowest color change among resin composites. The highest ΔE values were obtained after immersion in coffee and cranberry juice. Coffee promoted the highest gloss change (worst gloss retention), followed by cranberry juice, Coca-cola and artificial saliva (p<0.05). The type of beverage significantly influenced the gloss of resin composites. Coca-cola reduced gloss of the three resin composites in a similar manner. Coffee affected the ED gloss more than that of Z350 and CD, while cranberry juice affected Z350 more than ED and CD. Saliva had a more pronounced effect on the gloss retention of CD than ED. The beverages used in this study influenced the optical surface properties of the composites studied.

Abstract This study evaluated the effect of air-abrasion on t®m phase transformation, roughness, topography and the elemental composition of three Y-TZP (Yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal) dental ceramics: two conventional (Lava Frame and IPS ZirCad) and one with high-translucency (Lava Plus). Plates obtained from sintered blocks of each ceramic were divided into four groups: AS (as-sintered); 30 (air-abrasion with 30 mm Si-coated Al2O3 particles); 50 (air-abrasion with 50 mm Al2O3 particles) and 150 (air-abrasion with 150 mm Al2O3 particles). After the treatments, the plates were submitted to X-ray diffractometry; 3-D profilometry and SEM/EDS. The AS surfaces were composed of Zr and t phases. All treatments produced t®m phase transformation in the ceramics. The diameter of air-abrasion particles influenced the roughness (150>50>30>AS) and the topography. SEM analysis showed that the three treatments produced groove-shaped microretentions on the ceramic surfaces, which increased with the diameter of air-abrasion particles. EDS showed a decrease in Zr content along with the emergence of O and Al elements after air-abrasion. Presence of Si was also detected on the plates air-abraded with 30 mm Si-coated Al2O3 particles. It was concluded that irrespective of the type and diameter of the particles, air-abrasion produced t®m phase transformation, increased the roughness and changed the elemental composition of the three Y-TZP dental ceramics. Lava Plus also behaved similarly to the conventional Y-TZP ceramics, indicating that this high translucency ceramic could be more suitable to build monolithic ceramic restorations in the aesthetic restorative dentistry field.

Dental erosion can be defined as a multifactorial process that induces tooth dissolution by intrinsic or extrinsic acids. Acquired pellicle is a film, free from bacteria, that covers all tooth tissues, and acts as a selective membrane that prevents direct contact of the acids with enamel/dentin surface. Dentifrices, frequently used in the biofilm control, have some constituents, such as surfactant agents, which influence on the adsorption of salivary proteins, and may directly affect the formation of salivary pellicle and the fluoride release on oral environment. Thus, it was verified the influence of surfactants over the protective effect of the acquired pellicle, and on the interaction of fluoride with enamel. Three different surfactants were tested (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate - SLS, Tween 20 T20 and Cocoamidopropyl Betaine - CAPB), in 2 different concentrations (1.0% and 1.5%). Water was used as negative control. Bovine enamel samples were selected and submitted to an in vitro des/remineralization model with citric acid during 5 days, immersion in human saliva for acquired pellicle formation and immersion in the surfactant solutions, associated or not with sodium fluoride (NaF 275ppm). A NaF solution was used as positive control. The surface wettability was determined by contact angle between water and the enamel using a tensiometer, and the acquired enamel pellicle formation was assessed using a spectrophotometer (FTIR). Initial erosion was defined by microhardness at the first cycle day (measured after the first acid, after treatment and after the second acid), and the structure loss was determined by profilometry. The KOH-soluble fluoride was also quantified after the end of the cycle. The surface energy analysis showed that only SLS and CAPB in both concentrations decreased the contact angle between enamel and water. Regarding the proteins quantification, no differences were found between the groups. Concerning initial erosion, microhardness data showed that all surfactants, in both concentrations, did not interfered with enamel remineralization, but 1% and 1,5% SLS interfered on NaF protective effect. 1% and 1,5% T20 and 1,5%, CAPB despite presenting some protective effect against new acid challenge, did not promote the same protection as NaF. Profilometry results showed that the 1% T20 promoted lower surface loss than at 1.5%, while 1% and 1.5% CAPB protected enamel compared to negative control group. However, no agent associated with NaF showed higher protection than the positive control. KOH-soluble fluoride analysis showed that all surfactants reduced the CaF2 adsorption over enamel surface. It can be concluded that the surfactants tested reduced the enamel contact angle (except for T20). The SLS decreased the protective potential of NaF associated with the pellicle in initial erosion and no agent tested interfered with the protective effect of NaF on enamel erosive wear(AU)

Objective: This study aimed to determine and differentiate erosive softening and enamel erosive loss induced by citric and hydrochloric acids. Material and Methods: Forty enamel specimens were divided into 2 groups: 1) 0.05 M citric acid (pH 2.5) simulating extrinsic erosion and 2) 0.01 M hydrochloric acid (pH 2.2) simulating intrinsic erosion. The enamel specimens were submitted to erosive challenges. Surface microhardness (softening) or contact profilometry (loss) was done after 30 s, after each 60 s up to 10 min, after each 5 min up to 30 min and after 60, 90 and 120 min. Results: Erosive softening (enamel hardness loss) was measurable up to 1 and 2 min for hydrochloric and citric acids, respectively. Erosive loss was significantly increased over time for both types of acids. After 8 min, citric acid was more aggressive than hydrochloric acid (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The progression of enamel erosion from erosive softening to erosive loss is highly dependent on the type of acid, being citric acid more aggressive in later stages. Therefore, this finding should be considered when choosing the method of analysis for laboratory studies

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this investigation was to give insights into the impact of carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks on the likely capacity of enamel surface dissolution and the influence of human saliva exposure as a biological protective factor. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The pH, titratable acidity (TA) to pH 7.0, and buffer capacity (β) of common beverages ingested by patients under physical activity were analyzed. Then, we randomly distributed 50 specimens of human enamel into 5 groups. Processed and natural coconut water served as controls for testing three carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks. In all specimens, we measured surface microhardness (Knoop hardness numbers) and enamel loss (profilometry, µm) for baseline and after simulated intake cycling exposure model. We also prepared areas of specimens to be exposed to human saliva overnight prior to the simulated intake cycling exposure. The cycles were performed by alternated immersions in beverages and artificial saliva. ANOVA two-way and Tukey HDS tests were used. RESULTS: The range of pH, TA, and β were 2.85 - 4.81, 8.33 - 46.66 mM/L and 3.48 - 10.25 mM/L × pH, respectively. The highest capacity of enamel surface dissolution was found for commercially available sports drinks for all variables. Single time human saliva exposure failed to significantly promote protective effect for the acidic attack of beverages. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks usually consumed during endurance training may have a greater capacity of dissolution of enamel surface depending on their physicochemical proprieties associated with pH and titratable acidity.

RESUMO

AIM: This study aimed to investigate the erosive potential of these drinks using human enamel in vitro. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A range of bottled, still flavoured water drinks available in the UK were investigated and their erosive potential was compared by measuring pH and titratable acidity. Six beverages were chosen for the main study and also both a negative (distilled water) and positive control (orange juice). Human enamel specimens were prepared, sectioned and varnished leaving an exposure window visible to have contact with test solutions. Each specimen was randomly allocated in groups of six. Each group was exposed to 20 ml of one of the eight test solutions for 10, 30, 60 and 90 min. Quantitative light-induced fluorescence was used to ensure the teeth selected were free of artefacts and diseased areas. Erosion was measured using non-contact optical profilometry. RESULTS: Enamel loss occurred with all test drinks and the positive control (p<0.05) and in most cases the still water drinks were just as erosive as the positive control. Only vitamin water at 30 min was not significantly different from the negative control (p= 0.86), All drinks tested resulted in significant enamel loss (p<0.01). These results may indicate that consumers should think of still water beverages as potentially acidic drinks rather than just flavoured healthy water alternatives. CONCLUSION: This study indicates the need for preventive advice to be given by dentists about such beverages and therefore ultimately to make patients and consumers more aware of hidden erosive risks.

RESUMO

Aim: To evaluate the changes in surface roughness and frictional features of 'ion-implanted nickel titanium (NiTi) and titanium molybdenum alloy (TMA) arch wires' from its conventional types in an in-vitro laboratory set up. Materials and Methods: 'Ion-implanted NiTi and low friction TMA arch wires' were assessed for surface roughness with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and 3 dimensional (3D) optical profilometry. Frictional forces were studied in a universal testing machine. Surface roughness of arch wires were determined as Root Mean Square (RMS) values in nanometers and Frictional Forces (FF) in grams. Statistical Analysis Used: Mean values of RMS and FF were compared by Student's 't' test and one way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: SEM images showed a smooth topography for ion-implanted versions. 3D optical profilometry demonstrated reduction of RMS values by 58.43% for ion-implanted NiTi (795.95 to 330.87 nm) and 48.90% for TMA groups (463.28 to 236.35 nm) from controls. Nonetheless, the corresponding decrease in FF was only 29.18% for NiTi and 22.04% for TMA, suggesting partial correction of surface roughness and disproportionate reduction in frictional forces with ion-implantation. Though the reductions were highly significant at P < 0.001, relations between surface roughness and frictional forces remained non conclusive even after ion-implantation. Conclusion: The study proved that ion-implantation can significantly reduce the surface roughness of NiTi and TMA wires but could not make a similar reduction in frictional forces. This can be attributed to the inherent differences in stiffness and surface reactivity of NiTi and TMA wires when used in combination with stainless steel brackets, which needs further investigations.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to create a synthetic juice (SJ) to be used as a surrogate for natural orange juices in erosion studies, verifying its erosive potential. The SJ was formulated based on the chemical composition of orange juices from different locations. Forty enamel and 40 root dentin specimens were randomly assigned into 4 experimental groups (n=10): SJ; 1% Citric Acid (CA); Minute Maid Original® (MM) and Florida Natural Original® (FN). The specimens were immersed in their respective solutions for 5 min, 6x/day for 5 days, in an erosion-remineralization cycling model. Enamel specimens were analyzed by surface Knoop microhardness and optical profilometry and dentin specimens only by optical profilometry. Outcomes were analyzed statistically by ANOVA followed by Tukey’s test considering a significance level of 5%. For enamel, the surface loss and microhardness changes found for MM and SJ groups were similar (p>0.05) and significantly lower (p<0.01) than those found in the CA group. For dentin, CA promoted significantly greater (p<0.01) surface loss compared with all the other groups. No significant difference (p>0.05) was observed in dentin surface loss between MM and SJ. In conclusion, CA was the most erosive solution, and SJ had a similar erosive potential to that of MM natural orange juice.

Aim: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the surface roughness of three glass ionomer cements (GICs) indicated for ART restorations. Methods: Ten cylindrical specimens of three commercial glass ionomers cements (Vidrion R - S.S. White, Maxxion R - FGM and Vitromolar DFL) were prepared (n=30) without surface finishing or protection. Twenty-four hours after preparation, the surface roughness measurements were obtained as the mean of three readings of the surface of each specimen by profilometry. The roughness values (Ra, ìm) were subjected to one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test (p<0.05). Results: No statistically significant difference swere observed between Vidrion R (0.18 ± 0.05) and Vitromolar (0.21 ± 0.05), whereas Maxxion R presented significantly higher roughness values than those of the other materials. Conclusions: It may be concluded that characteristics of particle size and composition of the different GICs affected their surface roughness 24 h after preparation.

Topical retinoic acid has been effectively used to treat photo aging; nevertheless, cutaneous irritation as a side effect is a limiting factor for treatment. Retinaldehyde is an immediate precursor of retinoic acid that has biologic activity in the skin, with few side effects. The objective of this investigation was to compare efficacy and tolerability of topical retinoic acid and retinaldehyde in the treatment of photo aging, by means of profilometry and clinical-photographic analysis and to determine side effects from both medications. Methods: were included 160 colombian women (aged 35 to 60 years), who hadn't had previous treatments and weren't pregnant or breast feeding. A total of 119 patients completed 24 weeks of treatment. Of these, 61 used retinaldehyde and 58 retinoic acid. Clinical evaluation was carried out on weeks 4, 8, 16 and 20, and profilometry of the “crow's feet” area was done at the beginning and at week 24.

Profilometry is a measurement technique widely used in map and relief graphic construction, being applied to vast areas of knowledge. The aim of the present investigation was to introduce a calibration method applied to a moiré technique in experiments of mechanical archetypes, with low cost and flexibility, due to the need for supplying demands from both industry and mechanical archetype development for non-invasive techniques. The moiré technique basically consists of the comparison of two periodic structures. One of them follows the behavior of the object surface (reticulum model - Rm) and the other one is kept constant without deformation, working as a reference plane (reference reticulum - Rr). The light that passes between the reticulum overlaps and forms a moiré standard, also called moiré fringe which behaves as sinusoidal waves. In the present calibration tests, a relief cone was used to determine a correction constant in the generated maps. The technique was applied to draw the profile of a computer mouse, and to determine deformation on a metallic blade, mounted over a deformation test table. The proposed methodology for the calibration applied to the moiré technique showed to allow the construction of maps with maximum resolution of hundredths of millimeters. Results also showed that the technique might be used in applications with lower levels of precision as well.
