Objective To study the effect of extracts of Smilax china L. on inhibition the experimentally induced benign prostatic hyperplasia ( BPH) , and screen the effective fraction. Methods The BPH model was built on the castrated rats by subcutaneous injection of testosterone propionate. Male rats were randomly divided into eight groups ( n=6 ):sham operation, model control, petroleum ether fraction, acetic ether fraction, n-butyl alcohol fraction, water fraction, macroporous resin fraction ( FMR) , and total extracts group. The rats were treated with testosterone propionate by subcutaneous injection for consecutive 3 weeks. Meanwhile, rats were orally administrated with the six extract fractions of S. china L. After the last administration, serum was separated for the determination of prostatic acid phosphatase ( PACP ) , prostate was weighed and histopathological examination was carried out to evaluate the inhibitory effect of S. china L. against BPH. Results All of the six fractions from S. china L. could inhibit BPH, and the n-butanol fraction, water fraction and FMR showed better inhibitory effect, which significantly decreased the prostatic index by 52. 80%, 50. 93% and 67. 70%, respectively, remarkably reduced serum PACP, and notably improved the prostate gland morphology compared with the model group. Among the three fractions, FMR showed the strongest effect against BPH. Conclusion S. china L. ameliorates the experimentally prostatic hyperplasia, and FMR showes the best effect, which might be the bioactive components against BPH.

Objective To explore the correlation between lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) with prostate volume and peak flow rate in aging staff men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Methods A total of 180 elderly patients were randomly enrolled. They were diagnosed with BPH by rectal touch and transected ultrasound from April 2008 to December 2008. The international prostate symptom score (IPSS), prostate volume (PV) as well as peak flow rate (QMAX)were analyzed respectively. Results IPSS were ( 9. 1 ± 0. 7 ) scores, ( 12. 1 ± 0. 7 ) scores and (14.0±1.3) scores in 60-69 years old group, 70-79 years old group and more than 80 years old group. PV were (40. 6±1.9) ml, (42. 4±1.9) ml and (48. 7±2.8) ml in corresponding groups, and PV was elevated along with aging (F= 5. 705, 2. 983, P＜0. 05). QMAX were ( 14.7 ± 0. 6) ml/s,(14.0±0. 5) ml/s and (12.6±0.9) ml/s, and QMAX was decreased along with aging (F=2. 131, P＞0. 05). Along with aggravation of LUTS, PV (ml) increased (39. 2±18. 1 vs. 45.7±16.9 vs. 47. 9± 16. 5) and QMAX (ml/s) decreased ( 15.0 ± 4.8 vs. 13. 5 ± 5.06 vs. 11.5 ± 4. 7, F= 3. 427, 4. 742, P ＜0.05). Conclusions The LUTS of patients with BPH is aggravated with aging, at the same time, the degree of LUTS increases with PV and decreases with QMAX. If get active treatment of drugs if available, they may improve their quality of life.
RESUMO
To determine if the use of video in transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) can decrease the resection time and lessen the complications in the management of men with bladder outlet obstruction Thirty men with mild to moderate symptoms of prostatism underwent TURP. Fifteen had conventional TURP while fifteen had TURP with video monitor. Parameters evaluated included change in hemoglobin and serum sodium, operative time (in minutes), bleeding, extravasations and TUR syndromes The decrease in hemoglobin and serum sodium is greater in conventional TURP compared to video TURP. The mean operative time for conventional TURP was 67 + 19.49 minutes and 57 + 7.30 minutes for video TURP The complications of TURP can be significantly decreased by using video camera and TV monitor as additional equipment in TURP.
