RESUMO

Fish is used as a great source of food and the quality of its meat can be indicated by fat and protein contents as well as low quantity of water in fish meat. Therefore, the present study was performed for improvement in weight, feed-conversion ratio, protein-efficiency ratio, and growth. The experiment was performed at commercial level in field (pond) and the influence of fish meal protein on growth of Labeo rohita was investigated in 60 days culture trials. 90 fingerlings (Size: 4.97 to 6.04; Weight: 4.15 to 4.20) were maintained in well aerated 280 L three glass tanks in triplicate. These glass tanks were named as T1, T2 and T3. T1 was consisted of 30% crude protein with control diet containing proteins, fats vitamins and fibres, T2 consisted of 35% protein with control diet, while T3 consisted of only control diet (rice polish). The fish were fed 4% percent of their body weight twice a day at twelve hours interval for 60 days. There was a significant increase (p<0.05) in body weight, feed-conversion ratio, protein-efficiency ratio, and gross fish production of fish having 35% fish meal protein with control diet (T2) when compared with 30% fish meal protein with control diet T1 and control diet T3. These findings suggest that 35% fishmeal protein appear to be sufficient for obtaining optimum growth in fish.

A study was conducted to find out the effect of different protein-based diets on fingerlings of Tor putitora (mahseer). A feed with dietary protein levels of 35%, 40%, 45%, and 50% were prepared. The effect of different protein-based feed on weight gain, standard growth rate (SGR), food conversion ratio (FCR), percent weight gain, food conversion efficiency (FCE), and protein efficiency ratio (PER) was studied. An increase was observed in the growth rate with an increase in protein concentration up to 45%. The fingerlings fed a 45% protein diet shown the highest growth, followed by 50%, 40%, and 35%. The SGR value was greatest for 45% protein diet (8.56) followed by 50% and 40%, while the least values were observed for 35% protein feed (1.57). The same trend was observed for FCE. The highest PER values was observed in fishes fed 45% protein-based feed (0.65) followed by 50% (0.56), 40% (0.38) and35% (0.17). The food conversion ratio was lowest for 45% protein diet (3.41), while the greatest for 35% protein feed (16.85). It was concluded that a 45% protein-based diet was the best feed formulation for higher production of Tor putitora. However, research on the same percentage of protein diet is recommended for yearlings.


Para o bom crescimento dos peixes, é necessário alimentá-los com uma alimentação adequada e balanceada. Um estudo foi realizado para descobrir o efeito de diferentes dietas à base de proteínas em alevinos de Tor putitora (mahseer). Foi preparado um alimento com níveis de proteína dietética de 35%, 40%, 45% e 50%. O efeito de diferentes alimentos à base de proteína no ganho de peso, taxa de crescimento padrão (SGR), taxa de conversão alimentar (FCR), ganho de peso percentual, eficiência de conversão alimentar (FCE) e taxa de eficiência proteica (PER) foi estudado. Foi observado um aumento na taxa de crescimento com um aumento na concentração de proteína de até 45%. Concluiu-se que a dieta à base de proteína de 45% foi a melhor formulação alimentar para maior produção de Tor putitora. No entanto, a pesquisa sobre a mesma porcentagem de dieta proteica é recomendada para animais de um ano.

Objective To evaluate the nutritional value of yeast protein, and to provide laboratory evidence for its application in the field of food and health food. Methods The amino acids content of yeast protein, soybean protein, whey protein and mixed protein was detected. Five nutritional evaluation methods, including amino acid score, ratio of total essential amino acid, ratio coefficient of amino acid, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and equally weighted gray correlation analysis were used to evaluate the protein quality. The protein efficacy test of the four proteins was performed in Sprague-Dawley rats to compare their nutritional value in vivo. Results The results showed that yeast protein was rich in essential amino acids, accounting for 47.58% of the total amino acids, and the ratio of essential amino acids to non-essential amino acids reached 0.91. Five nutritional evaluation methods all revealed that the yeast protein was an excellent protein in quality. The results of the protein efficacy test showed that yeast protein was able to promote the growth and development of the animals, and keep them in good nutritional condition, which was similar to whey protein, soy protein, and casein. The mixed protein had the highest corrected efficiency ratio among all the proteins tested in this study, possibly because the mixed ingredients made the amino acids complementary and thus had higher nutritional value. Conclusion Yeast protein can be used as a useful supplement to plant-derived and animal-derived protein products.

@#<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>OBJECTIVE:</strong> This study has been conducted to determine the protein efficiency ratio (PER) of selected indigenous legumes, namely pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) and lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus), as alternative protein sources.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>METHODS:</strong> Experimental diets (pigeon pea-based and lima bean-based) and control diet (casein-based) were formulated and standardized using proximate analysis to have 10% protein basal diet based on the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) guidelines. Diets were given to corresponding groups (2 experimental, 1 control) using 30 albino Sprague-Dawley weanling rats aged 21 days old, over a 28-day growth assay.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>RESULTS:</strong> Results showed that the mean final weight and weight gain were significantly higher in rats fed with casein-based diet (p0.05). The PER of the casein (3.37 ± 2.71) is higher than that of the pigeon pea (1.87) and lima bean (1.32). These results can be attributed to the presence of anti-nutritional factors (ANFs) in the seeds of pigeon pea and lima bean. Reduced protein intake (due to bitter taste), toxicity, and interference with protein digestibility (through interaction with digestive enzymes) imparted by these ANFs can explain the weight loss among the experimental groups and consequently the low PER. Heat treatment done in the study were not adequate to remove the ANFs.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>CONCLUSION:</strong> The study shows that pigeon pea and lima bean as protein sources alone are not as adequate and efficient in providing necessary protein requirements for weanling rats. Proper processing and treatment should be done to remove inhibitors of protein digestibility and quality.</p>

O estudo foi desenvolvido no Laboratório de Piscicultura do Departamento de Zootecnia da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, com duração de oito semanas, de abril a junho de 2011. O objetivo foi definir o melhor nível de incorporação do resíduo de peixes na alimentação de juvenis de jundiá, em sistema de recirculação d'água, utilizando-se 450 alevinos de jundiás, com peso médio inicial de 7,2±0,27g. Foram testadas cinco diferentes dietas, em três repetições, com níveis diferentes (0; 3,75; 7,5; 15; e 30 por cento) de incorporação de farinha de carcaça de jundiás com vísceras (FCJCV). As dietas continham, aproximadamente, 37 por cento de PB e 3200kcal de EM/kg de dieta. Foram coletados dados de ganho em peso diário, sobrevivência, fator de condição, taxa de crescimento específico, conversão alimentar aparente, rendimento de carcaça, taxa de eficiência proteica e deposição de proteína e lipídio corporal. O maior ganho de peso foi para o nível 30 por cento de inclusão de FCJCV, com peso final de 45,47g e ganho em peso diário de 0,68g/dia. A dieta com nível de 30% de inclusão de FCJCV apresentou melhores valores para taxa de crescimento específico (3,34 por cento/dia), conversão alimentar aparente (1,05: 1), biomassa final 1.105,45g, deposição proteica corporal (64,9mg/dia), taxa de eficiência proteica (1,9) e coeficiente de retenção proteica (1,96 por cento). Concluiu-se que a utilização de farinha de resíduos de processamento de jundiá no nível de 30% de inclusão na dieta foi a que apresentou maior eficiência no desenvolvimento de juvenis de jundiá...


The study was carried out at the Fish Farming Laboratory of the Animal Science Department, Federal University of Santa Maria, during 8 weeks, from April to June 2011. The objective of this study was to define the best level of incorporation of waste in food fish of juvenile Jundiá in water recirculation system using 450 fingerlings of jundiá with initial average weight of 7.2±0.27g. We tested 5 different diets in three repetitions with different levels of incorporation of carcasse jundiá with viscera meal (FCJCV) (0, 3.75, 7.5, 15, and 30 percent). The diets contained 37 percent CP and 3200kcal/kg of ME. Data were collected from daily weight gain, survival, condition factor, specific growth rate, feed conversion, carcass yield, protein efficiency ratio and deposition of body protein and lipid. The weight gain was greater with the inclusion of 30 percent FCJCV with final weight of 45.47g and daily weight gain of 0.68g/day. The diet with inclusion of 30 percent FCJCV showed better values for specific growth rate (3.34 percent/day), feed conversion ratio (1.05: 1), final biomass (1105.45g), body protein deposition (64.9mg/day), protein efficiency ratio (1.9) and protein retention coefficient (1.96 percent). The protein nutritive value of anchovy, mackerel and canned sardine samples together with casein as a reference formulation were evaluated. Proximate composition, protein quality and protein digestibility were determined. Procedures for evaluation included Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER) using the rat bioassay and in vivo Apparent Digestibility (AD). Rats fed with canned sardine diet had the highest mean body weight (154.8±12.28g) while rats fed with anchovy diet had the lowest mean body weight (145.27±15.89g) with significant differences between all the groups. Mean body weight of rats fed with selected fish diet was higher compared to rats fed with casein diet. For PER value, canned sardine has the highest value (2.48), followed by anchovy (2.46) and mackerel (2.34). PER value for all selected fish is lower than that for casein (3.14). Mackerel had the highest value of in vivo AD (96.99%), followed by casein (96.96%), canned sardine (96.88%) and anchovy (91.29%). In conclusion, among the types of fish compared, sardine had the highest protein quality while mackerel showed the highest digestibility.
