RESUMO

Purpose: To investigate the quality of life (QoL) in a sample of color vision deficit (CVD) patients in India and how color vision deficiency affects them psychologically, economically, and in productivity related to their work and occupation. Methods: A descriptive and case–control study design using a questionnaire was conducted on N = 120 participants, of whom 60 were patients of CVD (52 male and eight female) who visited two eye facilities in Hyderabad between 2020 and 2021 and 60 were age?matched normal color vision participants who served as controls. We validated English–Telugu adapted version of CVD?QoL, developed by Barry et al. in 2017 (CB?QoL). The CVD?QoL consists of 27 Likert?scale items with factors (lifestyle, emotions, and work). Color vision was assessed using the Ishihara and Cambridge Mollen color vision tests. A six?point Likert scale was used, with lower scores indicating poor QoL (from 1 = severe issue to 6 = no problem). Results: The CVD?QoL questionnaire’s reliability and internal consistency were measured, including Cronbach’s ? (? =0.70–0.90). There was no significance between the group in age (t = ?1.2, P = 0.67) whereas the Ishihara colour vision test, scores showed a significant difference (t = 4.50, P < 0.001). The QoL scores showed a significant difference towards lifestyle, emotions and work (P = 0.001). The CVD group had a poorer QoL score than the normal color vision group odds ratio [OR] =0.31, 95% confidence interval [CI], (P = 0.002, CI = 0.14–0.65, Z = 3.0) . In this analysis, a low CI indicated that the OR was more precise. Conclusion: Color vision deficiency affects Indians’ QoL, according to this study. The mean scores of lifestyle, emotions, and work were lower than the UK sample. Since CVD is underreported and possibly affects developing countries more, advocacy for a new health care plan on CVD is essential. Increasing public understanding and awareness could also help diagnosing the CVD population

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cleanroom air is extremely dry, as it is maintained within 1 % of relative humidity. Few studies have assessed the dermatologic life quality of workers in ultralow-humidity environments. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the dermatologic life quality of cleanroom workers using the Skindex-29, compared to those of non-cleanroom workers. METHODS: Study participants were 501 cleanroom workers and 157 non-cleanroom workers from a secondary battery factory, who underwent an employee health examination at a single university hospital from September 2014 to September 2015. Results of the self-administered Skindex-29, and McMonnies questionnaire were analyzed. Other information and disease history were also collected during physician's medical examination. Descriptive and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed. RESULTS: The Skindex-29 score was significantly higher in cleanroom workers than in non-cleanroom workers for all domains, Symptom (16.0 ± 15.9 vs. 6.3 ± 10.2, p < 0.001), Emotion (11.3 ± 17.4 vs. 2.5 ± 7.4, p < 0.001), Function (5.2 ± 11.1 vs. 1.6 ± 4.0, p < 0.001), and Overall (10.8 ± 13.4 vs. 3.5 ± 6.2, p < 0.001). The Skindex-29 score of cleanroom workers was similar to that of patients with skin diseases such as psoriasis, other dermatitis, corns, alopecia etc. Among the cleanroom workers, 37 workers had one or more skin diseases. Among the risk factors, ‘working at cleanroom’, ‘possessing skin disease’ and ‘McMonnies score’ had significant strong correlations with Skindex-29 score, meanwhile age, sex, smoking, drinking and exercise had weak correlations with it.‘Working at cleanroom’ and ‘possessing skin disease’ had highest odds ratios with overall 14.0 (C.I.: 5.9–33.1) and 13.4 (C.I.: 4.5–29.2), and the lowest odds ratios with function domain 3.5(C.I.: 1.7–7.1) and 4.5(C.I.: 2.1–9.5), respectively. The McMonnies score had the highest odds ratio with overall, 6.9(C.I.: 4.5–10.8) and lowest odd ratio with emotion domain 4.2 (C.I.: 2.7–6.4). CONCLUSIONS: Dermatologic life quality among cleanroom workers in the secondary battery factory is shown to be lower than that among non-cleanroom workers in this study. The study suggests that the Skindex-29 may provide helpful information on the dermatologic life quality of cleanroom workers. Therefore, regarding evaluation of dermatologic life quality using Skindex-29, preventive care is necessary for cleanroom workers in ultralow humidity environment.

RESUMO

Kampo medicine and acupuncture have traditionally been compared to "two wheels of one cart". Both Kampo medicine and acupuncture have the main aim of eliciting the healing ability of human nature and treat the disease state grasped as "physical/mental distortion"to correct the distortion. Kampo medicine and acupuncture have a lot in common. For example, both respect the subjective symptoms, place an emphasis on removal of complaints and are based on individual care. By utilizing such common points and common direction of care, the combination therapy with Kampo medicine and acupuncture can contribute to alleviation of complaints and QOL (Quality of Life) improvement more effectively than each monotherapy alone. Furthermore, Kampo medicine and acupuncture increase the therapeutic effect of each other and a synergistic effect rather than the additive effect can be expected. <BR>On the other hand, Kampo medicine is basically taken by oral ingestion and treats the body from inside, whereas acupuncture is based on stimulation of acupuncture points of the body surface and treats the body from outside. Based on such difference, Kampo medicine and acupuncture have actually different favorite fields and different favorite disease states. It is therefore possible to realize a complementary therapy by utilizing the characteristics of each other.<BR>At the outpatient office of oriental medicine of Saitama Medical University, various combinations of Kampo medicine and acupuncture have been tried and it is often experienced that such combinations are useful to improve patient's QOL. Furthermore, in not a few patients, it is combination therapy that can show a high effect or combination therapy is essential. <BR>In this lecture, among the cases where combination therapies were effective, those for which the combination effect can be explained easily were presented and discussed. Some cases of chronic urticaria, fibromyalgia syndrome, low back pain (lumbar spondylosis), tension headache and patulous eustachian tube were raised. Kampo medicine added with acupuncture or acupuncture added with Kampo medicine could achieve further QOL improvement such as shortening of the duration of treatment until cure, improvement of complaints not resolved by each monotherapy and alleviation of accompanying symptoms.

RESUMO

[Objective] The understanding and cooperation of dialysis medical staff are indispensable for the widespread introduction of acupuncture treatment in maintenance dialysis medical treatment. In this study, we tried to clarify the level of understanding of acupuncture of dialysis medical staff We also tried to examine change in their opinion of acupuncture after experiencing it. We discussed the possibility of using acupuncture treatment in maintenance dialysis medical treatment.<BR>[Method] At first, we distributed the questionnaire concerning the level of understanding of the acupuncture of dialysis medical staff (n=105) who visited the experience corner. Next, we investigated whether the staff who had experienced acupuncture treatment changed their opinion of it. We also investigated the method and effect of acupuncture.<BR>[Results & Conclusion] Few staff had experienced acupuncture previously. They had fears regarding acu- puncture regardless of their experiences, but these fears were alleviated after acupuncture experience. From these results, it is believed that dialysis staff have an insufficient understanding acupuncture. On the other hand, we considered the possibility that acupuncture could positively contribute to dialysis medical treatment because many staff approved the safety and hygiene levels of acupuncture. It will be necessary to educate staff concerning the effect of acupuncture on maintenance dialysis patients in order that they may be able to effec- tively administer acupuncture in the future.
