Rind hardness in sugarcane plays a major role in lodging resistance, and internode borer resistance,screening of sugarcane for rind hardness is essential for reducing yield loss. In order to identify the suitability of soil penetrometer for rapid rind hardness measurement, the rind hardness testing was carried out in two sugarcane clones of different rind hardness variability viz., Co 13003 (hard rind type) and Co 14002 (soft rind type). The investigation was carried out by three methods viz., pendulum type impact test rig, texture analyzer,and soil penetrometer and theresults revealed that thehard rind type Co 13003 sugarcane clone was observed with significantly greater hardness. Significant correlation between the three methods for the rind hardness trait and among the three methods the soil penetrometer method of determination of rind hardness is easy and rapid. Two-way hierarchical cluster analysis of studied biochemical traits has revealed a better classification of hard-rinded and soft-rind sugarcane clones. The Co 13003 was recorded as least susceptible to borers with high rind hardness (>200 psi), along with better fibre. The NG 77 a hard rind type clone was also observed with high lignin compared to soft rind Gungera.

Objectives@#Adherence to clinical practice guidelines (CPG) has been shown to reduce inter-physician practice variation and improve quality of care. This study evaluated guideline adherence of physicians in two tertiary public hospitals to local CPG on COVID-19. @*Methods@#This was a multicenter, retrospective chart review, rapid assessment method study. Guideline adherence and non-adherence (overuse and underuse) to 15 strong recommendations in the prevailing Philippine COVID-19 Living Recommendations were assessed among a sample of patients admitted in two centers from July to October 2021. Differences in adherence across COVID-19 disease severities and managing hospital units were analyzed. @*Results@#A total of 723 patient charts from two centers were reviewed. Guideline adherence to dexamethasone use among patients with hypoxemia is 91.4% (95% CI 88.6 to 93.6) with 9.2% overuse. Tocilizumab was underused in 52.2% of patients with indications to receive the drug. There was overuse of empiric antibiotics in 43.6% of patients without suspicion of bacterial coinfection. Lowest adherence to antibiotic use was seen among patients with critical disease severity and those managed in the intensive care unit. None of the other non-recommended treatment modalities were given. @*Conclusion@#Management of COVID-19 in both centers was generally adherent to guideline recommendations. We detected high underuse of tocilizumab probably related to the global supply shortage during the study period and high overuse of antibiotics in patients without suspicion of bacterial coinfection. While the results of this study cannot be generalized in other healthcare settings, we recommend the application of similar rapid assessment studies in guideline adherence evaluation as a quality improvement tool and to identify issues with resource utilization especially during public health emergencies.

Objective:To investigate the prevalence of cataract, cataract surgical coverage and surgical outcomes in people aged 50 years and older in Kandze Tibetan areas of Sichuan Province, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the prevention and treatment of blindness in the region.Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted to study the population aged 50 years and above in Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, from October 2017 to April 2018 using the Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) method.A total of 5 000 permanent residents aged 50 years and older were selected using a stratified, cluster sampling method with reference to the data from the 2010 China Population Census with the RAAB software, and each cluster consisted of 50 people, for a total of 100 clusters.The survey was conducted by two survey teams, and all subjects underwent visual acuity and ophthalmic examinations at home to investigate relevant cataract prevalence, surgical coverage, surgical barriers, and postoperative outcomes according to WHO Standards.This study adhered to the Declaration of Helsinki.The study protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of Kandze Prefecture People's Hospital (No.GZZYY-2016-11). Written informed consent was obtained from each subject.Results:Of 5 000 eligible participants, 4 763 were examined, with a response rate of 95.3%.Referred to the visual impairment standard of WHO and the pinhole visual acuity, the prevalence of bilateral blindness, severe, moderate and mild visual impairment was 0.6%(95% [confidence interval, CI]: 0.4%-0.9%), 0.9%(95% CI: 0.6%-1.2%), 2.4%(95% CI: 2.0%-2.9%) and 5.2%(95% CI: 4.6%-5.9%), respectively.The prevalence of cataract blindness was 0.7%(95% CI: 0.4%-1.0%) in females, significantly higher than 0.2%(95% CI: 0.1%-0.5%) in males( P<0.05). The prevalence of cataract blindness was 2.3% among Tibetan, higher than 1.0% among Han Chinese, showing a statistically significant difference ( P<0.05). By the number of eyes, the cataract surgical coverage was 60.8%(95% CI: 55.5%-65.8%) in females, which was lower than 70.1%(95% CI: 63.7%-75.7%) in males, with a statistically significant difference ( P<0.05). By the number of cases, the surgical coverage for cataract blindness in both eyes was 82.0%(95% CI: 75.2%-87.6%), with blindness defined as the pinhole visual acuity <0.05 in the dominant eye.A total of 171 people with untreated cataract received a questionnaire about barriers to cataract surgery.The most important barrier was unaware that treatment was available at 77.8%, followed by inconvenient transportation or being unaccompanied to the hospital at 11.7%.A total of 364 eyes underwent cataract surgery, of which 336 eyes underwent intraocular lens implantation, and the intraocular lens implantation rate was 92.3%.There were 216 eyes with a postoperative cataract visual acuity ≥0.3, accounting for 59.3%(216/364). Conclusions:In the Kandze Tibetan area of Sichuan Province, cataract is still the main cause of blindness among people aged 50 and above, and surgery for cataract remains the focus of blindness prevention work.The cataract surgical coverage in this area is high, but the postoperative outcomes are still poor compared with the WHO reference index for post-cataract surgery (1998), and corresponding measures must be taken to improve the quality of surgery.

ABSTRACT Background: Systematic data on the occurrence of tungiasis are scarce. Methods: We analyzed data on tungiasis in humans and animals from all municipalities of Ceará State, Northeast Brazil, using a rapid assessment questionnaire. Results: Among the 184 municipalities, 181 (98.3%) reported tungiasis in the past (before 2021) or currently, 120 (65.2%) reported current occurrence, 155 (84.2%) reported severe cases in the past or currently, 47 (25.5 %) reported severe cases currently, and 132 (71.7%) reported tungiasis in animals. Conclusions: Tungiasis is a significant public health concern in Ceará. A One Health approach is required to reduce the disease burden in humans and animals.

Purpose: To determine the level of awareness of cataract and glaucoma and identify the determinants of awareness in two rural districts of Telangana, India. Methods: A population?based cross?sectional study was conducted using the rapid assessment of visual impairment (RAVI) methodology in Khammam and Warangal districts. A validated questionnaire was administered to participants aged 40 years and above to assess the level of awareness of cataract and glaucoma. Results: The awareness questionnaire was administered to 3273 participants of whom 1433 (43.8%) were men, 1985 (60.6%) of them had no education, and 1645 (50.3%) were from Khammam district. In total, 2539/3273 (77.6%; 95% confidence intervals (CI): 76.1– 79.0%) participants reported awareness of cataract. Awareness of cataract was higher in Khammam compared to that in Warangal (84.4% versus 70.6%; P < 0.01). Only 41/3273 (1.25%, 95% CI: 0.90–1.69%) participants were aware of glaucoma. Awareness of glaucoma was also higher in Khammam (1.88% versus 0.61%; P < 0.01). Younger age groups, men, any level of education, and residing in Khammam were factors associated with awareness of cataract. Only having any level of education and residing in Khammam were associated with awareness of glaucoma. Conclusion: Awareness of cataract was high, but awareness of glaucoma was very poor. There is a need to spread awareness about these potentially blinding conditions. Moving forward, this can be a critical step in developing a preventive eye care strategy to achieve universal eye health in India.

Abstract The Brazilian Atlantic Forest holds a major part of the country's amphibian species richness and high rates of endemism. In this study, we conducted surveys using the Rapid Assessment (RA) method to sample the amphibian fauna of the Serra das Torres Natural Monument (MONAST), an Atlantic Forest remnant in southeastern Brazil. We sampled actively with a 6-10-person team to collect standard samples from 09:00 to 12:00 hours for the daytime period, and from 18:00 to 22:00 hours for the crepuscular/nighttime period, with a total of approximately 1,320 hours of sampling effort. We supplemented these data with 720 hours of passive sampling, using pitfall traps with drift fences (30 bucket-days). We recorded 54 amphibian species (two gymnophionans and 52 anurans), and the species richness estimated by the Bootstrap method indicates that a slightly larger number of species (n = 60) may occur in the study area. The most speciose family was Hylidae (n = 21), followed by Brachycephalidae (n = 8). Overall, 25% of the species (n = 13) were recorded only once (singletons) and 15% (n = 8) only twice (doubletons). Most amphibians recorded in this study (71%, n = 37 species) were restricted to the Atlantic Forest biome, two species (Euparkerella robusta and Luetkenotyphlus fredi) are endemic to the Espírito Santo state, and one of them, the leaf litter species E. robusta, is endemic to the MONAST. Euparkerella robusta is currently listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN and is classified as Critically Endangered in the Espírito Santo State red list, while L. fredi has yet to be evaluated due to its recent description. Thoropa lutzi is currently listed as Endangered (EN) by both the IUCN and in the State list. Nine species are listed as Data Deficient (DD) and populations of 13 species are considered to be declining by the IUCN. We extend the geographical distribution of two anuran species (Hylodes babax and Phasmahyla lisbella) and fill an important gap in the distribution of Siphonops hardyi. Amphibians associated with the forest floor represented 42% of the species richness from MONAST, and 43% of these species inhabit the leaf litter exclusively. Our study revealed that Serra das Torres preserves a considerable diversity of Atlantic Forest amphibians, which reinforces the need for the conservation of this forest remnant.
Resumo A Mata Atlântica brasileira guarda importante porção da riqueza de anfíbios e altas taxas de endemismos. Neste estudo, nós realizamos pesquisas usando o Método de Avaliação Rápida (RA) com o objetivo de inventariar a fauna de anfíbios de um remanescente da Mata Atlântica no sudeste do Brasil, o Monumento Natural Serra das Torres (MONAST). Amostramos ativamente com uma equipe de 6 a 10 pessoas para coletar amostras padronizadas entre 09:00 e 12:00 horas durante o peíodo diurno e entre 18:00 e 22:00 duranto período crepuscular/noturno, totalizando aproximadamente 1320 horas de esforço amostral. Complementamos estes dados com 720 horas de amostragem passiva usando armadilhas de queda com cercas-guia (30 dias de balde). Registramos 54 espécies de anfíbios (dois gimnofionos e 52 anuros) e a riqueza de espécies estimada pelo Bootstrap indicou um número relativamente maior de espécies (n = 60). A família mais especiosa foi Hylidae (n = 21), seguida por Brachycephalidae (n = 8). No geral, 25% das espécies (n = 13) foram registradas apenas uma vez - singletons e 15% (n = 8) apenas duas vezes (doubletons). A maioria dos anfíbios registrados neste estudo (71%, n = 37 espécies) esteve restrita ao bioma Mata Atlântica, duas espécies (Euparkerella robusta e Luetkenotyphlus fredi) são endêmicas do estado do Espírito Santo, sendo uma delas, a espécie de serapilheira E. robusta, endêmica do MONAST. Euparkerella robusta está atualmente listada como Vulnerável pela IUCN e classificada como Criticamente Ameaçada na lista vermelha do estado do Espírito Santo, enquanto L. fredi ainda não foi avaliada devido a sua descrição ser muito recente. Thoropa lutzi está atualmente listada como Ameaçada (EN) pela IUCN e na lista estadual. Nove espécies estão listadas como Deficiente de Dados (DD) e as populações de 13 espécies são consideradas em declínio pela IUCN. Estendemos a distribuição geográfica de duas espécies de anuros (Hylodes babax e Phasmahyla lisbella) e preenchemos uma importante lacuna na distribuição de Siphonops hardyi. Os anfíbios associados ao chão da floresta representaram 42% das espécies do MONAST e 43% destas espécies habitavam exclusivamente a serapilheira. Nosso estudo revelou que a Serra das Torres preserva diversidade considerável de anfíbios da Mata Atlântica, o que reforça a necessidade de conservação desse remanescente florestal.

Abstract Introduction: Obesity, characterized by the accumulation of excess body fat, can alter respiratory mechanics and compromise functional capacity. Given its increasing prevalence and the significant morbidity associated with the condition, it is important to investigate techniques that enable rapid, easy measurement of lung function and the possible correlation between obesity and functional capacity. Objective: To assess lung function and functional capacity in obese adults and determine whether there is a correlation between reduced peak expiratory flow and impaired functional capacity. Methods: 30 participants, distributed into two groups: obese (36 ± 13 years) and normal weight (31 ± 9 years) were evaluated based on anthropometric measurements, the six-minute walk test (6MWT) and peak expiratory flow (PEF). Results: The obese individuals showed reduced PEF (382 ± 99 vs. 497 ± 104 L/min, p < 0.01), walked shorter distances in the 6MWT (453 ± 37 vs. 617 ± 50 m, p < 0.01), had higher blood pressure and perceived exertion (p < 0.05) when compared to normal weight participants. Additionally, there was a positive significant association between expiratory flow and distance walked in the 6MWT (r = 0.635 and p < 0.001). Conclusion: Obese individuals exhibited lower PEF and walked shorter distances in the 6MWT, indicating a positive correlation between these two variables. In light of this outcome, the assessment methods used could contribute to improving analysis of respiratory and functional status in this population and aid in exercise prescription.
Resumo Introdução: A obesidade, caracterizada por acúmulo excessivo de tecido adiposo no organismo, pode alterar a mecânica ventilatória, trazendo prejuízos funcionais. Considerando a prevalência crescente da obesidade, bem como a grande morbidade associada a esta condição, torna-se relevante investigar técnicas de mensuração rápidas e fáceis da função ventilatória e a possível correlação com a capacidade funcional. Objetivo: Avaliar a função ventilatória e a capacidade funcional em adultos obesos e determinar se pico de fluxo expiratório reduzido está correlacionado com prejuízo da capacidade funcional. Métodos: 30 participantes, distribuídos em dois grupos: obeso (36 ± 13 anos) e eutrófico (31 ± 9 anos) foram avaliados por meio de medidas antropométricas, do teste de caminhada de seis minutos (TC6´) e da avaliação do pico de fluxo expiratório (PFE). Resultados: Os indivíduos obesos apresentaram reduzido PFE (382 ± 99 vs. 497 ± 104 L/min, p < 0,01) e percorreram menor distância no TC6´ (453 ± 37 vs. 617 ± 50 m, p < 0,01) com maior pressão arterial e percepção de esforço (p < 0,05) quando comparados aos eutróficos. Além disso, foi encontrada correlação positiva e significativa entre fluxo expiratório e distância percorrida (r = 0,635 e p < 0,001). Conclusão: Os indivíduos obesos tiveram menor PFE e menor distância percorrida no TC6´, constatada correlação positiva entre essas duas variáveis. Diante de tal desfecho, a inclusão dos métodos avaliativos utilizados podem contribuir para melhor análise da condição respiratória e funcional dessa população e auxiliar na prescrição de exercícios.

In the twenty-first century, high contagious infectious diseases such as SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome), FMD (Foot-and-Mouth Disease) and AI (Avian Influenza) have become very prevalent, causing treat harm to humans and animals in aspect of public health, and economical issues. The critical problem is that newly-reported infectious diseases that humans firstly experience are expected to continue to emerge, and these diseases will be spreading out rapidly. Therefore, rapid and safe supplies of effective vaccines are most pivotal to prevent the rapid prevalent of new infection, but international standards or assessing protocol the safety of urgent vaccines are not established well. In our previous study, since we established a module to assess the brain safety of urgent vaccines, therefore, it is necessary to verify that this established module for assessing brain safety could work effectively in commercially available two vaccines (one killed- and on live-vaccines). We compared the results of Evans blue (EB) assay and qPCR analysis by injection of two kinds of vaccines, PBS and Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) under the condition of the module previously reported. We confirmed that the brain safety test module for urgent vaccine we established is very reproducible. Therefore, it is believed that this vaccine safety testing method can be used to validate brain safety when prompt supply of a newly developed vaccines is needed.

Abstract: Recently, there has been a remarkable increase in biomedical research being conducted in low and middle-income countries. This increase has brought attention to the need for high quality research ethics systems within these countries and a greater focus on research ethics training. Though most programs tend to concentrate on training individuals, less attention has focused on institutions as the target of such training. In this paper we demonstrate a rapid approach to evaluating institutional research capacity. The method adapts the Octagon Model, which evaluates institutional research ethics using eight domains: basic values and identity, organization of activities, implementation, relevance, proper skills, financing and administration, target groups, and working environment. The framework was applied to the University of Zambia in order to conduct a baseline assessment of university research ethics capacity. Internal and external assessments were conducted. The domains of working environment and proper skills scored highest, while relevance, target groups and identity scored lower. Consistent with previous work, a systems approach to evaluating institutional research development capacity can provide a rapid assessment of an institutional bioethics program. This case study reveals the strengths and weaknesses of the university's research ethics program and provides a framework for future capacity growth.
Resumen: Recientemente, ha habido un notable aumento en la investigación biomédica en países de ingresos bajos y medianos. Este aumento ha llamado la atención sobre la necesidad de sistemas éticos de investigación de alta calidad en estos países y un mayor enfoque en la formación en ética de la investigación. Aunque la mayoría de los programas tienden a concentrarse en la formación de los individuos, menos atención se ha centrado en las instituciones como objetivo de dicha formación. En este trabajo se demuestra un enfoque rápido para evaluar la capacidad de investigación institucional. El método adapta el modelo Octagon, que evalúa la ética institucional de la investigación utilizando ocho dominios: valores básicos e identidad, organización de actividades, implementación, relevancia, habilidades adecuadas, financiamiento y administración, grupos objetivo y ambiente de trabajo. El marco se aplicó a la Universidad de Zambia, con el fin de realizar una evaluación inicial de la capacidad de ética de la investigación universitaria. Se realizaron evaluaciones internas y externas. Los ámbitos del entorno de trabajo y de las competencias apropiadas obtuvieron el puntaje más alto, mientras que la relevancia, los grupos objetivo y la identidad obtuvieron calificaciones más bajas. De acuerdo con trabajos previos, un enfoque sistémico para evaluar la capacidad de desarrollo institucional de la investigación puede proporcionar una evaluación rápida de un programa institucional de bioética. Este estudio de caso revela las fortalezas y debilidades del programa de ética de la investigación de la universidad y proporciona un marco para el futuro crecimiento de la capacidad.
Resumo: Recentemente, tem havido um notável aumento na investigação biomédica em países de renda baixa e média. Este aumento tem chamado a atenção para a necessidade de sistemas éticos de pesquisa de alta qualidade nesses países e um maior foco na formação em ética em pesquisa. Embora a maioria dos programas tende a se concentrar na formação dos indivíduos, menos atenção centrou-se em instituições como objetivo dessa formação. Este trabalho demonstra uma aproximação rápida para avaliar a capacidade de pesquisa institucional. O método adapta o modelo Octagon, que avalia a ética institucional de pesquisa usando oito domínios: valores básicos e identidade, organização das atividades, implementação, pertinência, competências adequadas, financiamento e administração, os grupos-alvo e ambiente de trabalho. O quadro foi aplicado para a Universidade da Zâmbia, a fim de fazer uma primeira avaliação da capacidade de ética em pesquisa universitária. Foram realizadas avaliações internas e externas. Os campos do ambiente trabalho e competências adequadas, obtiveram a maior pontuação, enquanto a relevância, grupos-alvo e identidade obtiveram qualificações inferiores. De acordo com trabalhos anteriores, uma abordagem sistêmica para avaliar a capacidade dedesenvolvimento institucional de pesquisa pode fornecer uma avaliação rápida de um programa institucional de bioética. Este estudo de caso revela os pontos fortes e pontos fracos do programa de ética em pesquisa da Universidade e fornece uma estrutura para o crescimento futuro da capacidade.

AIM: To investigate the incidence of trachoma in children aged 1 to 9y in Hainan Province and determine high-risk trachoma endemic and non-endemic areas in Hainan, and thus provide evidence for developing trachoma control and prevention therapy.METHODS:The areas of investigation were chosen on the basis of past literatures, expert interviews and survey on the spot.In 2013, Hainan Provincial Office of Blindness Prevention carried out the survey in 7 counties including Dongfang City, Wuzhishan City, Ledong County, Baisha County, Baoting County, Lingao County and Changjiang County.In these districts, 356 pupils including 192 boys and 164 girls were examined, their age ranging from 1 to 9 and their average age being 7 years old.The targeted students received the trachoma rapid assessment by the adoption of simplified trachoma classification system which was recommended by the World Health Organization.RESULTS: No case of active trachoma was found among the 356 students.CONCLUSION:The prevalence rate of trachoma in children under 9 years is less than 5% in Hainan Province.Active trachoma is not a public health issue in Hainan Province.

Background Trachoma is a serious blinding eye disease.At present,the incidence rate of trachoma in China has been greatly reduced with the unremitting efforts of World Health Orgnization (WHO) and Chinese government.However,in some economically underdeveloped areas,there is still active trachoma.Ohjective This study aimed to survey the prevalence of children's active trachoma in rural area of Naxi district and Jiangyang district of Luzhou city and assess the prevention and treatment outcome of trachoma during 10 years.Methods A cross-sectional study was performed in Naxi district and Jiangyang district of Luzhou city,the economic underdeveloping and water-starved regions in the year 2000.The active trachoma was screened in 214 school-age children with the male 113 and female 101 based on simplified trachoma grading system and trachoma rapid assessment survey standards and requirements of WHO.The symptoms of active trachoma were divided into trachomatous follicular (TF),trachomatous inflammation intense (TI),trachomatous scarring (TS),trachoma trichiasis (TT) and corneal opacities (CO).The epidemiological survey was re-assessed in 100 school-age children (with the male 58 and female 42) in these regions in the year 2013 to evaluate the prevalence change of children active trachoma during 10 years.Results In the year 2000,214 children were screened in 4 villages of Naxi district and Jiangyang district,and the prevalence rate of TF was 49.07% (105/214) in the year 2000.The prevalence rate of TF was 49.05% (52/106) in the Naxi district and 49.07% (53/108) in the Jiangyang district,showing no significant difference between them (x2 =0.01,P =0.99).In the 100 school-age children who received survey in Naxi district and Jiangyang district in the year 2013,no TF,TF,TI,TS,TT and CO was found,showing no active trachoma.Conclusions The active trachoma has been controlled in rural areas of Luzhou city following the prevention and treatment of trachoma and the improvement of economic status in past decade.

@#AIM: To evaluate the prevalence of trachoma in Shaanxi Province and provide basic data for the prevention and treatment of trachoma.<p>METHODS: Four suspected areas with high prevalence of trachoma including Kengzhen in Jiaxian Yulin, Luochuan of Yan'an, Nanzheng county of Hanzhong, Shangzhou distract in Shangluo, were selected by Blindness Prevention Office of Shaanxi Province. A random sample of 200 pupils aged 6 to 8 was examined by ophthalmic officers using the World Health Organization(WHO)simplified clinical grading system.<p>RESULTS: No infection of active trachoma was detected in 200 pupils.<p>CONCLUSION: No epidemic areas of active trachoma were found. Based on the data of this study,trachoma is no longer considered as a public health problem in Shaanxi Province.

Previous extensive studies of zooplankton distribution in the eutrophic Kingston Harbour established that it was being continuously contaminated. We assessed the community in 2011, 17 years after a previous study and five years after the introduction of a tertiary waste water system. Sampling was conducted for four weeks at eight stations identical to those sampled in a previous study. We used horizontal surface tows with a 200µm net. A total of 73 zooplankton taxa were identified and copepods dominated with 20 species. Mean total abundances were high, ranging from a minimum of 2 383 animals m-3 in the southern region of Hunts Bay to 194 166 animals m-3at the Inner Harbour. Five zooplankton taxa (Acartia tonsa, Paracalanus spp., Temora turbinata, Penilia avirostris and Lucifer faxoni) that were previously identified as indicators, were again important in the Harbour. The overall zooplankton abundances were similar and in some cases higher than the previous study. There was no significant improvement in the water quality since the introduction of the treatment system at Soapberry. This may be a result of unknown nutrient inputs or of nutrient remaining in the sediments.
Extensos estudios previos de la distribución de zooplancton en el Puerto de Kingston estableció que ha sido contaminado continuamente. Evaluamos la comunidad en el 2011, 17 años después de un estudio previo y cuatro años después de la introducción de un sistema de lagunas de aguas residuales terciarias. Utilizamos arrastres superficiales horizontalescon una red de 200 µm. Se identificó un total de 73 taxones de zooplancton y copépodos de los cuales los predominaron 20 especies. La media de las abundancias totales fueron altas y los valores oscilaron entre un mínimo de 2 383 animales m-3 en la zona sur de Bahía Hunts a 194 166 animales m-3 en lo interior del puerto. Cinco taxones de zooplancton (Acartia tonsa, Paracalanus spp., T. turbinata, Penilia avirostris y Lucifer faxoni) identificados previamente como indicadores, fueron importantes de nuevo en la Bahía. La abundancia total de zooplancton fue similar y en algunos casos superior a la del estudio anterior. No hubo mejoría significativa en la calidad del agua desde la introducción del sistema de tratamiento terciario en Soapberry. Esto puede ser resultado de la entrada continua de nutrientes desconocidos y no regulados en los sedimentos.

Background/Aim: The Andhra Pradesh Eye disease Study (APEDS) was a conventional cross‑sectional study conducted in four locations during 1996‑2000. Ten years later, a Rapid Assessment of Refractive Errors (RARE) survey was conducted in one of the geographical regions. The prevalence of visual impairment (VI), uncorrected refractive error (URE), spectacles use obtained from both the surveys was compared. Settings and Design: Rural settings; cross‑sectional studies. Materials and Methods: In both the surveys, distance visual acuity (VA) was assessed using a logMAR chart. Pinhole VA was assessed if presenting VA was <20/20 in APEDS and <20/40 in RARE. VI was defined as presenting VA <20/40 in the better eye. URE was defined as presenting VA <20/40 and improving to ≥20/40 with a pinhole. Statistical Analysis Used: Performed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Chi square tests and t‑test were used. Results and Conclusions: The results from a RARE survey with 3,095 subjects were compared with an APEDS dataset that had 1,232 subjects in the same age group of 15-49 years. The prevalence of VI has decreased from 9.5% (95% CI, 7.7-11.1) in APEDS to 2.7% (95% CI, 2.1-3.3) in RARE. Similarly, the prevalence of URE in the better eye decreased from 5.8% (95% CI, 4.5-7.1) to 2.3% (95% CI, 1.8- 2.8). The usage of spectacles increased from 6.6% (95% CI, 5.2-8.0) to 9.7% (95% CI, 8.7-10.7). There is a decreasing trend in the prevalence of VI and URE in Mahbubnagar district in Andhra Pradesh over a decade.

The Upper Essequibo Conservation Concession is a reserve in central-eastern Guyana managed by Conservation International. The site is uninhabited by people and poorly studied. The first scientific fish survey was in 2007 in conjunction with the filming of the BBC nature documentary Lost Land of the Jaguar. Aquatic habitats were primarily flowing water, ranging from the main channel of the Essequibo River to small forest creeks. Ponds and seasonally flooded forests were uncommon. Large predatory fishes were abundant in the Essequibo River. Fishes tolerant of low oxygen levels were common in flooded forests and small forest creeks. There was zero similarity between the fish assemblages of the Essequibo River and flooded forests / small forest creeks. The rest of the habitats and fish assemblages formed a continuum between these extremes. Imminent threats to the Upper Essequibo Conservation Concession include logging, mining, and over-fishing. Because of the heterogeneous distribution of fish assemblages, and because each threat will differentially affect different habitats, a two-pronged approach focusing on the ends of the habitat / fish assemblage continuum should be implemented in order to conserve the entire fish biodiversity of the Upper Essequibo Conservation Concession.

El primer estudio científico de peces fue en 2007 junto con la filmación del BBC documental naturaleza Lost Land of the Jaguar. Background & Objectives: The desired impact of IMNCI is the reduction of mortality, morbidity and suffering, through assuring children’s access to quality health care in health facilities and improved case management at home. Maintaining the performance of health and village workers is essential to achieve this impact. So objective of this study is to assess IMNCI implementation in Bhavnagar district of Gujarat to strategize for accelerating effective implementation. Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out in March 2012 in Bhavnagar district. Four blocks of Bhavnagar district were purposefully selected out of seven blocks on the basis of immunization coverage of previous year. From each block one best PHC and from selected PHC one best sub-centre and one best Anganwadi were selected purposefully by solely on basis of perception of Medical Officer in charge PHC and BHO for implementation of IMNCI in their area in last one year. The purpose of adopting such method was to evaluate the performance of IMNCI implementation in centres (PHC, SC, AW) that was judged best by their supervisors. After selection, PHC, SC and Anganwadi centre were visited to assess the practice of IMNCI by ANM and Anganwadi Worker. Medical Officer, Health Supervisors and ICDS officers were interviewed to understand overall implementation process. For collecting data pre-tested and predesigned questionnaire was utilized. Results: Basic IMNCI training in Bhavnagar was completed in 90% of health and ICDS workers. More than 87.5% workers said that their knowledge, skill, confidence and credibility among community were increased after IMNCI training. Logistic and drugs supply were insufficient at sub centre and Anganwadi centre. Out of the total 80 filled IMNCI case sheets by the health and ICDS workers, 32(40%) were found accurately complete as the correctly filling of all the column (assessment and classification and treatment) in form considered as complete form. Accurate classification, management and advice of cases according to IMNCI guidelines were 62 (77.5%), 42 (52.5%) and 38 (47.5%) respectively as the accurate classification (assessment, classification and treatment) of the entire column in form correctly. Combination of one correct and other incorrect assessment or classification or treatment considered as partial accurate and inaccurate if all the column were not assessed or not classified or not given the treatment correctly. While observing actual practice of IMNCI, accuracy among health and ICDS workers was found in assessment 5(31.3%), Classification 8(50%) and treatment 7(43.8%). Supportive supervision and feedback mechanism were lacking at all level. Interpretation & Conclusion: Supportive supervision and feedback mechanism are key concern and must address. Proper logistic and drugs planning and management also main concern for IMNCI programme.

Reliable information is required for the planning and management of eye care services. While classical research methods provide reliable estimates, they are prohibitively expensive and resource intensive. Rapid assessment (RA) methods are indispensable tools in situations where data are needed quickly and where time- or cost-related factors prohibit the use of classical epidemiological surveys. These methods have been developed and field tested, and can be applied across almost the entire gamut of health care. The 1990s witnessed the emergence of RA methods in eye care for cataract, onchocerciasis, and trachoma and, more recently, the main causes of avoidable blindness and visual impairment. The important features of RA methods include the use of local resources, simplified sampling methodology, and a simple examination protocol/data collection method that can be performed by locally available personnel. The analysis is quick and easy to interpret. The entire process is inexpensive, so the survey may be repeated once every 5–10 years to assess the changing trends in disease burden. RA survey methods are typically linked with an intervention. This article provides an overview of the RA methods commonly used in eye care, and emphasizes the selection of appropriate methods based on the local need and context.
