RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate and compare the denture satisfaction tendencies for and between the completely and partially edentulous patients, with different prosthodontic treatment modalities. Methodology: The study was conducted to include twenty eight patients that were fit to the criteria of the research, asked to answer some questions, reflect their satisfaction with the newly received dentures, which were delivered to patients according to their conditions and needs (complete removable denture, conventional metal frame RPD, RPD with flexible esthetic clasps and RPD with attachments). Results:The data collected from these patients was grouped and the questionnaires values were calculated to estimate the most satisfied group, which was seen with the group who received RPD with flexible esthetic clasps. But the significant difference analysed by Mann-Whitney Test, was focused on the satisfaction of prostheses’ appearance, that was clearly revealed for the patients who received RPD with resilient attachments; followed by the group who received complete dentures and RPD with esthetic flexible clasp (at the same level), supported by the family and friends positive opinions. Also the same group that received RPD with attachments achieved optimum level in prosthesis’ satisfaction for retention. Conclusion:The results of this research directed the attention to the recent treatment modalities in fabrication of dentures, like using flexible esthetic clasps and attachments; the patients that received RPD with flexible esthetic clasps appeared to be more satisfied with their prostheses, mostly this was related to the comfortability, esthetic and retention traits, followed with group that received RPD with attachments that showed significant differences in esthetic and retention scores than other groups. While the complete denture wearers were the less satisfied group, related obviously to the difficulty to gain the retention in relation to the partial once, as well as the uncomfortable feelings.

RESUMO

Family satisfaction is referred to the extent in which family members feel happy and fulfilled with each other. However, there has been lack of evidences on the family satisfaction scale within the Malaysian context. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess validity of the Malay version of the Olson’s Family Satisfaction Scale. This is to allow Malaysian researchers to bring family satisfaction in line with the different field of studies. This study was conducted among 567 Malaysian working women. Data were collected using self-administrated questionnaires. This study conducted exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, convergent validity and internal consistency using Cronbach’s alpha. The findings of this study support the uni-dimensionality of the Malay version of the family satisfaction scale. The 10 items of the scale account for 68.1% of the total variance and the un-rotated factor loadings ranged from 0.76 to 0.87. Confirmatory factor analysis was run and supported the structure of family satisfaction scale. The results of confirmatory factor analysis using AMOS 21 in the current study reported the following indices: RMSEA= 0.06, CFI= 0.94, NFI= 0.94, TLI= 0.93. The convergent validity (average variance extracted= 0.65) and the internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha= 0.94) of this construct were adequately supported. The findings support the factor structure, convergent validity and the internal consistency of the examined construct. Therefore, Malay version of the family satisfaction scale is a valid and reliable instrument among Malaysian working women.

This study aimed to adapt a positive and negative affect scale for adolescents. Participants were 425 students, aged between 14 and 19 years. Students were tested in their classrooms. Principal component analysis revealed a bifactorial solution. The first factor, positive affect, had an eigenvalue of 8.1 and explained 29 percent of the total variance. The second factor, negative affect, had an eigenvalue of 3.6 and explained 12.4 percent of the total variance. Internal consistency, Cronbach’s alpha, was .88 for both positive and negative affect scales. Positive correlations were found between positive affect and self-esteem and life satisfaction. Negative correlations were found between negative affect and these two variables. In addition, males presented higher scores of positive affect, while females showed higher scores of negative affect. Local norms for interpreting scores are presented.

The purpose of this study was to develop a Multidimensional Life Satisfaction Scale for Adolescents (MLSSA). Participants were 425 adolescents (224 boys and 201 girls) with a mean age of 16,1 years (SD=1,2) attending schools in the city of Santa Maria/RS. Items selection occurred on basis of the results from principal components analysis, and the final form of the MLSSA included 52 items, distributed over 7 factors: Family, Self, Compared Self, School, Non-violence, Self-efficacy and Friendship. The seven components explained 54 percent of the total variance. The coefficients of internal consistency were satisfactory for each subscale, as well as for the total scale (α=0,93). Evidences of validity were also obtained through a correlational analysis with a measure of Self-esteem.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Depression is a frequent comorbid disease of chronic pain patients. This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of depression and to correlate associated factors and depression in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis. METHODS: The data of this survey was collected from 97 patients that visited our pain clinic for the management of lumbar spinal stenosis. Depression was examined by a self-reported survey using the Korean version of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and the life satisfaction scale score were also obtained. Demographic and clinical characteristics (including spouse status, employment status, smoking status, the number of patients with multiple painful areas, the number of patients with combined disease, pain duration, visual analogue scale, Roland 5-point scale and walking distance) were obtained from an interview with the patient. The patients were divided into group N (BDI 14, n = 54) according to the BDI scale. Of the 97 patients, 55.7% had a high BDI score. RESULTS: The patients in group N had a higher rate of employment (48.0%, P < 0.05) and had higher life satisfaction scale scores (9.4 +/- 2.5, P < 0.01) as compared to group D patients. The BDI score showed a close correlation with employment status and the life satisfaction scale. CONCLUSIONS: Many lumbar spinal stenosis patients had high BDI scores. Employment status and the life satisfaction scale were closely correlated with the BDI score.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To develop and test the validity and reliability of a brief self-completed questionnaire (Service Satisfaction Scale: SSS) for routinely assessing the quality of service in psychiatric ward inpatients. METHODS: A 30-item multidimensional questionnaire was developed by several steps of face validity and content validity. The questionnaire was administered to inpatients (n=348) discharged from psychiatric hospitals, general hospitals, and university hospitals. Construct validity was supported by performing principal component analysis. Reliability was estimated by calculating internal consistency of Cronbach's alpha. RESULTS: Factor analysis yielded five factors comprising staff attitude, treatment quality, ward environment, access/cost, and ward rule, which account for 63.04% of the common variance. The internal consistency of the scale was high (Cronbach's alpha=0.95). The concurrent validity was supported by the significant correlation of each of five factors with item that measured overall satisfaction of SSS. Patients with neurosis (anxiety disorder, somatoform disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder) and mood disorders were significantly satisfied than those with psychosis and alcoholic disorders. Patients who admitted voluntarily were more significantly satisfied than those who admitted involuntarily. Sociodemographic variables such as age, gender, marital status, monthly income, education level, employment status and religion were not significantly different at the total scores of SSS. Similarly, clinical characteristics such as age of onset, duration of illness, lengths of hospital stay and number of previous hospitalization did not associate significantly with the total scores of SSS. Patients discharged from university hospitals were significantly more satisfied than those of the general and psychiatric hospitals. CONCLUSION: SSS performed well in the validity and reliability, indicating that it can be a useful tool for measuring satisfaction of psychiatric inpatients in Korea.
