RESUMO

Background: To examine human bones is a challenge for experts, especially in deceased and also for determinationof sex for medico-legal purpose. Measurement of the sternum is done by many authors for determination of sex.Sternum was measured for length of manubrium, length of mesosternum and combined length of manubrium andmesosternum. The data was statistically analysed.Method: The present study was done on 65 human sternums(46 Males and 19 Females). Sternum was extractedfrom cadavers in the Department of Anatomy, People’s College of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Bhopaland Sternum from Autopsy bodies in the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, People’s College ofMedical Sciences and Research Centre, Bhopal. (MP),India.Results: If the combined length of a sternum is less than 150 mm then it is of female sternum, if it exceeds 150 mm,it is of male sternum. The mean Sternal Index in male was 43.43 and in females 41.132. 89.13% of male and21.05% of female specimen obey the Hyrtl’s law.Conclusion: The combined length of manubrium and mesosternum is considered as the most important parameter,which when applied to an individual specimen can help in sexing the sterna correctly in our study

RESUMO

Objective To measure the sternal angle corresponded to thoracic plane by three-dimensional reconstruction of spiral CT , and to explore the accurate positioning methods and the preoperative assessment of cervicothoracic junction lesions .Methods Selected 42 cases of normal bone mass , 48 cases with bone loss , and 60 cases of osteoporosis who were diagnosed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry , and measured the location of thoracic sternal angle corresponded to the thoracic spine and thoracic kyphosis angle through the volume recon -struction data of the 16-slice spiral CT chest examinations .Results The range of sternal angle corresponded to thoracic plane was measure-ment units ⅢtoⅥ.The measure unit Ⅳwas the most, accounting for about 55%.There was no statistical significance between the position of sternal angle corresponded to thoracic plane and the relationship of bone mass , which required further study .The position of sternal angle corresponded to thoracic plane was associated with the thoracic kyphosis angle .The larger the thoracic kyphosis angle , the lower the corre-sponding position was .Conclusion The thoracic segment corresponded to the sternal angle is not a constant or accurate plane , which is not properly concerned as an accurate positioning mark to the thoracic segment .The measurement of the thoracic sternal angle was corresponded to the thoracic spine location , and its co-relationship evaluation between the thoracic kyphosis angle was vital for the accurately positioning of cervico-thoracic junction area lesions , the pre-assessment methods of surgical treatment , approach selection , and different methods for ster-num and other such contents .This research was of important clinical significance .

RESUMO

On a left lateral chest radiogram,3 points are determined:A is the apex of the sternal angle formed by the manubrium and the body of the sternum,B is the highest point of the contact surface between the anterio-superior heart border and the anterior chest wall,and C is the apex of the anterior costophrenic angle.The distances of AC and BC are measured.The ratio of BC:AC is considered as an index of the size of the right ventricle.On the basis of measuring 120 normal subjects,0.54(0.46?0.04) is employed as the upper limit of normal values.Left lateral chest radiogram is easy to take.The measuring procedure is simple.The results of this measurement proves to be valuable after the method has been applied clinically.In the evaluation of the size of the right ventricle,this new digital index is helpful in the analysis of serial radiograms.This measurement makes left lateral chest radiogram more useful in detecting cardiac abnormalities.
