RESUMO

Objective: This study compared the regional-quota and general-selected medical students’ understanding, interest, and confidence in the community medicine practice and their attitudes toward the concept guidelines. Methods: We conducted a Web-based questionnaire survey regarding the understanding, interest, and confidence in future community medicine practice and attitudes toward concept guidelines among medical students of all grades (regional-quota and general-selected: n=82 and n=617, respectively). Results: The overall response rates were 68.5% (56/82) and 66.0% (409/617) in the regional-quota and general-selected groups, respectively. Although there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of understanding (P=0.998), interest and confidence in future practice were significantly higher in the regional-quota group (both P<0.001). There was no significant difference between the two groups for any of the six questions regarding community medicine guidelines. Conclusion: The understanding of community medicine or its conceptual guidelines did not significantly differ between the two groups; however, interest and confidence in future practice were significantly higher in the regional-quota group. These results suggest that the regional-quota system positively upregulates the interest in community medicine, which could be associated with confidence in future practice. Comprehensive and longitudinal improvements in the regional-quota system may be effective in cultivating community medicine.

RESUMO

ObjectiveTo investigate the prevalence of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) among female college students at a university in Fuzhou City, Jiangxi Province, and to facilitate early detection and intervention of PCOS. MethodsUsing a stratified sampling method, a total of 450 female freshmen were randomly selected for PCOS screening. A self-designed questionnaire was used for data collection, covering menstrual status, high androgen signs, lifestyle, dietary habits, and awareness of PCOS. Sample t test and χ2 test were used to compare the basic information and dietary habits between PCOS and non-PCOS cases. The correlation between various indicators and the prevalence of PCOS was analyzed by a logistic regression model. ResultsA total of 12 PCOS cases were identified, with a prevalence rate of 2.99%. PCOS cases exhibited statistically significant differences compared to non-PCOS cases in terms of waist-to-hip ratio, waist circumference, abdominal obesity, the proportion of overweight or obese individuals, and a preference for sweet food (all P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed a significant correlation between preference for sweet food and the occurrence of PCOS (OR=4.858, 95%CI=1.199‒19.675,P=0.027), as well as a significant correlation with PCOS accompanied by abdominal obesity (OR=7.083, 95%CI=0.773‒64.937, P=0.048). Among the female college students surveyed, 37.90% had never heard of PCOS, 51.62% were only familiar with the name of the disease, and 10.47% had attempted to search for PCOS-related information. ConclusionThe prevalence of PCOS among female college students should not be overlooked and unhealthy dietary habits may be a crucial factor contributing to the occurrence of PCOS during this period. Early screening for PCOS during puberty is crucial.

RESUMO

@#School is a densely populated place, which can easily lead to tuberculosis clusters, then affect the physical and mental health of students and the normal teaching order of school. Tuberculosis latent infection (LTBI) screening for new students and close contacts of tuberculosis patients has become important parts of school tuberculosis prevention and control strategies. Previous studies have shown that the LTBI rate of Chinese in-school students is about 5.74% to 11.67%, and there are differences in gender, studying phase and urban-rural distributions. Preventive treatment is an effective measure to prevent LTBI from developing into active tuberculosis, but the proportion of LTBI preventive treatment for students in most areas is low. The difficulties in implementing preventive treatment may be attributed to concerns about adverse reactions to medication and sense of shame towards illness among students, and lack of awareness about preventive treatment among medical staff. This review searches the research literature published from 2016 to 2023, and summarizes the prevalence of LTBI in Chinese students and progress on preventive treatment, so as to provide insights into prevention and control of tuberculosis among students.

RESUMO

From an ethical point of view, the ethical characteristics of the consciousness of the Chinese national community contain an ethical starting point based on "love"; ethical path with "people first" as the core; ethical vision for the purpose of "prosperity". The consciousness of the Chinese national community greatly conforms to the teaching objectives and teaching content of medical ethics. Therefore, medical ethics teaching from the perspective of the Chinese national community should implement the fundamental task of helping students develop good morals and enhance the moral quality of "love"; take the "community of doctor-patient destiny" as the starting point of education and build the concept of "people first"; strengthen the country’s sense of responsibility of "prosperity and strength" and establish the mission of "rooting and maintaining health at the grassroots level", build a strong consciousness of the Chinese national community.

RESUMO

It takes a long time to repair the social damage caused by a major epidemic, which is both a rebuilding of social order and a long process of social psychology. How to reproduce the collective memory of major epidemic events through narration, start from the reality of the epidemic narrative to the should and finally back to practice, and use epidemic narrative as an educational means and carrier in ideological and political education, it will be a beneficial attempt to realize the unification of knowledge and practice in college students’ ideological and political education in the post-epidemic period. To integrate the epidemic narrative into the ideological and political education of college students, it is necessary to adhere to the mainstream ideological direction of the narrative, unblock the narrative channel, reasonably choose the narrative method and optimize the narrative content, adhere to student-oriented, and give full play to the educational function of students’ individual narration.

ObjectiveTo identify and analyze the possible influencing factors of obesity among public primary school students in Minhang District, Shanghai. MethodsBasic data, collected through questionnaire stars, was imported with merged physical examination data into Excel to form a database. Data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed by SPSS 22.00. Independent sample t-test was used for the data with normal distribution. Nonparametric test was used for the data with non-normal distribution. χ2 test was used for the quantitative data. Logistic regression was used for univariate and multivariate analysis. ResultsAccording to the national physical health standards for students (revised in 2014) , the prevalence rate of obesity among primary school students in Minhang district was 29.63% . The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 32.1% in boys and 26.9% in girls. The trend of overweight and obesity in different grades was similar among different genders .A single factor analysis showed that, being the only child (χ2=9.300, P<0.01) , father obesity(χ2=106.417, P<0.001) or mother obesity(χ2=118.534, P<0.001) , mother's overweight during pregnancy (χ2=159.731, P<0.001) , caregiver's role as grandparents (χ2=38.736, P<0.001) , low education level (χ2=111.309, P<0.001) had effects on overweight and obesity of children while the differences had statistical significance. Pupil's bad eating habit (χ2=18.905,P<0.001) and preference (χ2=22.901, P<0.001) , insufficient sleep time (χ2=61.685, P<0.001) , long-time using of electronic products (χ2=37.182, P<0.001) and low-time of exercise (χ2=15.328, P<0.001) also affected the obesity of primary school students. Among the five factors of family, diet, psychology, static state and dynamic state, the influencing factors of obesity in primary school students from grade one to grade four were being the only child, obese father and/or mother, overweight mother during pregnancy, caregivers without higher education. In terms of diet, it was mainly based on eating habits before bedtime, as well as partial and picky eating habits. In terms of psychology, the main psychological source was the pressure of learning in school. There was a clear relationship between the pace of learning and not keeping up. Static analysis revealed a correlation with lack of sleep. After assigning values based on eye hygiene recommendations for the use of electronic products, it was found that there was no direct correlation between obesity in primary school students and the duration of electronic product use. Dynamic analysis showed that not taking part in school physical exercise was related to obesity. ConclusionThe obesity of primary school students is influenced by family, diet, psychology, static and dynamic factors. The intervention of obesity in primary school needs the joint efforts of school, society, family, self-cognition and so on.

Abstract Introduction: Sexual harassment is a reality that permeates hierarchical and gender power relations, and although noticeable in the medical and academic environment, it is considered a silenced violence that causes organic and psychological harm, with great consequences for the victim. Objective: To develop and validate an instrument to identify the occurrence of sexual harassment in medical students. Method: This instrument was developed, after reviewing the literature on the subject, with Likert-type responses at five option levels, which has two parts: the first with information on the participants' sociodemographic and academic characteristics and the second containing 21 items grouped into three dimensions: forms of harassment, facilitating factors and identification of the harasser in the academic environment and in hospital practice. Semantic and content validation was carried out by consensus of experts and FACE validation was carried out by a focal group of 12 students, two from each year of the course. To verify reliability, the instrument was sent to 1,146 medical students once a week for four weeks, with 350 (30.5%) students responding to the Test following the recommendation for psychometric studies. RESUMO

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Medical students demonstrate higher rates of substance use than other university students and the general population. The challenges imposed by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic raised significant concerns about mental health and substance use. OBJECTIVES: Assess the current prevalence of substance use among medical students at the University of São Paulo and evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on drug consumption. DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 275 medical students from the University of São Paulo Medical School (São Paulo, Brazil) in August 2020. METHODS: Substance use (lifetime, previous 12 months, and frequency of use before and during the COVID-19 pandemic) and socioeconomic data were assessed using an online self-administered questionnaire. Symptoms of depression were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. RESULTS: Alcohol was the most consumed substance in their lifetime (95.6%), followed by illicit drugs (61.1%), marijuana (60%), and tobacco (57.5%). The most commonly consumed substances in the previous year were alcohol (82.9%), illicit drugs (44.7%), marijuana (42.5%), and tobacco (36%). Students in the first two academic years consumed fewer substances than those from higher years. There was a decreasing trend in the prevalence of most substances used after the COVID-19 pandemic among sporadic users. However, frequent users maintained their drug use patterns. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of substance use was high in this population and increased from the basic to the clinical cycle. The COVID-19 pandemic may have affected the frequency of drug use and prevalence estimates.

The positive aspects of virtuality were related to the flexibility of schedules, time savings and extra expenses; They also indicated that it turns out to be a didactic way of carrying out the theoretical subjects. On the other hand, the negative aspects were linked to clinical and laboratory subjects; they indicated that their learning process during the pandemic was deficient in these subjects. However, some studies have shown that virtuality is a good complementary alternative for preclinical students, because it prepares them to approach the patient with greater confidence and security. It can be concluded that virtuality is a good ally in learning dental education; some of the students encourage this modality to continue over time, especially in theoretical and preclinical courses. Virtuality can continue to be part of dental education in our country, but it also depends on the teaching strategies and methodologies that accompany it.

Introduction: In the continuous training process of medical students, it is necessary to incorporate current issues; likewise, it is important to know the problems to seek solutions with the science support. Objective: To diagnose the training process of medical students as for the detection of incapacitating sequelae post-COVID-19. Methods: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study, with qualitative approach, of 20 students from 5th year of Medicine career, belonging to the University of Medical Sciences in Camagüey was carried out during their stay for the Public Health subject, from July to December, 2022. For such a purpose it was designed and applied an evaluative instrument with dimensions and indicators. Results: It was found that 50.0% of these students were in the age range of 21-26 years, while 65.0% were female. The cognitive dimension was evaluated as bad because 3 indicators, of the 4 that made it up, received that qualification; the same happened with the instrumental dimension. On the other hand, the attitudinal dimension and its 2 indicators were qualified as good. Conclusions: Inadequacies existed in the training process of medical students, which block their professional performance. On the base of the diagnosis, the interest in searching for information related to the detection of post-COVID-19 incapacitating sequelae is confirmed as strength.

(analytical) More than 30 years after the Convention on the Rights of the Child recognized their right to participate, research continues to be predominantly about children but not carried out with them. This study seeks to contribute to the incorporation of children as producers of knowledge in their schools. It is a longitudinal qualitative study in which 64 children assumed the role of co-researchers on the topic of school engagement. This was achieved through workshops that used a participatory action research methodology, interviews and analysis undertaken by the children themselves. The study identified different perceptions about the subtypes of school engagement and associated contextual factors that enrich adult analysis, as well as the importance of complementing quantitative data collected in schools with the voices of children, who in this process act as agents of change. The authors conclude the article with identifying how to achieve more meaningful child participation in research studies.

(analytical) Higher education in Chile has experienced massification during the last 30 years. However, a high level of segmentation in the system continues. In 2016, the fee-free policy began to be implemented and was designed for lower-income students. This research study sought to understand the academic experiences of fee-free students at prestigious and selective universities, which are considered spaces that reproduce power dynamics in favor of the country's upper classes. Biographical interviews were conducted with 13 fee-free students who are currently enrolled in these universities and a temporal thematic analysis was carried out. The results of the study show that: obtaining fee-free tuition facilitates access to education; both male and female fee-free students experience strong feelings of academic inadequacy; and these students take an active role in transforming their situations by adopting a strong work ethic that helps them continue with their studies. These experiences of young people from lower income backgrounds show the persistence of inequalities in the higher education sector.
