RESUMO

Objective:To estimate the mental health status and personality traits of the nuclear radiation emergency rescuers, allowing to provide reference basis for improving their mental health. Methods:Totally 52 nuclear radiation emergency rescuers were selected as the subjects. The symptom checklist 90 (SCL-90) and Cattell′s 16 personality factor scale (16PF) were used to assess their mental health status and personality traits. The results obtained from the survey of these rescuers were compared with those obtained using Students′ t-test, One-Way ANOVA and Pearson correlation analysis. Results:The average scores of multiple factors and positive items of the SCL-90 were significantly lower in the rescuers than in the norm ( t=-4.77 to -2.04, P<0.05), and the positive rate was 21.15%. The symptom checklist 90 subscales such as somatization, obsessive-compulsive and depression were found in the rescuers. Rescuers received high scores in the following components among the 16 factors of Cattell: less intelligent-more intelligent, emotionally stable. Rescuers also received low scores in the following components among the 16 factors of Cattell: tough-minded-tender-minded, trusting-suspicious. Life satisfaction, educational degree and Cattell′s 16 PF were significantly associated with the factors of SCL-90( r=-0.569 to 0.627, P<0.05). Conclusions:The rescuers are better than ordinary Chinese people in psychological health. Mental health-related factors such as literacy, life satisfaction, and personality traits should be taken into account when selecting team members and conducting psychological interventions.

RESUMO

@#

BACKGROUND: Leukemia is the most common malignant neoplasm in childhood, with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) comprising 71% of cases. Partients undergo intensive course of treatment and complications, making them at risk for psychosocial difficulties. The Pediatric Symptom Checklist (PSC) is a validated psychosocial screening tool for the identification of emotional, cognitive, and behavioral problems in children. It uses subscales to identify impairments in attention, internalizing, and externalizing behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: To screen the psychosocial status of pediatric patients with ALL using the PSC. It aimed to correlate a positive PSC score with factors such age, gender, and on-going chemotherapy.

METHODS: The study design is cross-sectional. Participants were asked to answer the PSC which is a 35-item questionnaire. Total scores were calculated and interpreted based on set cut-off scores.

RESULTS: A total of 87 patients with ALL were included in the study. The PSC was able to identify 16 patients (18%) with psychosocial problems. The patients had concerns related to the internalizing subscale, followed by attention and externalizing subscales. There was no association between age, sex, duration of diagnosis, and on-going chemotherapy with the presence of psychosocial issues in patients with ALL.

CONCLUSIONS: In this study, the prevalence of psychosocial issues in patients with ALL is 16%. Screening patients using the PSC can help in the early detection of psychosocial issues among children with ALL.

RECOMMENDATIONS: A separate study which focuses on both patients and families' psychosocial status is recommended to get an overall picture of the effect of cancer and its treatment. Screening in several points during the course chemotherapy can also be done in future studies.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES@#The epidemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) brought psychological stress to the public, especially to patients. This study aims to investigate the mental health of patients with COVID-19 in Changsha.@*METHODS@#We took cross-section investigation for the mental health of 112 patients with COVID-19 via questionnaires. Mann-Whitney test, Chi-square test, and Fisher's exact test were performed to compare general and clinical data between the slight-ordinary patients and severe patients. Single sample -tests were used to compare the difference between the factor scores of the Symptom Check-List 90 (SCL-90) in COVID-19 patients with the norm of 2015 and factor scores of SCL-90 in patients with the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).@*RESULTS@#The obsessive-compulsive, depression, sleep and eating disorders had the highest frequency among the positive symptoms of SCL-90 in patients with COVID-19 in Changsha. The factor scores of somatization, depression, anxiety, phobia anxiety, sleep and eating disorders in patients with COVID-19 were higher than those of the norm (≤0.001 or 0.05).@*CONCLUSIONS@#The levels of somatization, depression, anxiety, phobia anxiety, sleep and eating disorders in patients with COVID-19 in Changsha are higher than those of the norm. However, the mental health of slight-ordinary patients with COVID-19 is better than that of patients with SARS. It needs to provide targeting psychological interventions depending on the severity of patients.

RESUMO

Objective To discuss the ethical necessity and feasibility of implementing multiple comprehensive psychological intervention measures in intensive care unit (ICU), and to investigate the effect of the measures on treatment compliance. Methods The conscious adult patients hospitalized in emergency ICU (EICU) of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University from 2015 to 2017 were enrolled, and divided into control group and intervention group according to random number table, with 40 patients in each group. Patients in control group were treated with routine care and routine diagnosis and treatment, and patients in intervention group were treated with the help of psychologists and with multiple comprehensive psychological intervention measures (including nursing care, medical treatment, family and management) based on routine care and routine diagnosis and treatment. After 5 days of intervention, the treatment compliance, the medical coping attitude and the mental health were assessed respectively using the Treatment Compliance Scale, the Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire (MCMQ) and the Symptom Checklist Scale (SCL-90), and then comparation were done between the two groups. Results After 5 days of intervention, 3 patients in the control group and 4 patients in the intervention group withdraw the study because of the change of illness, and at last 37 patients in the control group and 36 in the intervention group were enrolled. There was no significant difference in basic data such as gender, age, education level, disease, course of disease, the length of EICU stay, and acute physiology and chronic health evaluationⅡ (APACHEⅡ) score between the two groups. The scores of treatment compliance in intervention group was significantly higher than that in control group (2.89±0.67 vs. 2.32±0.91, P < 0.01). Compared with the control group, the "confrontation" dimension score of the MCMQ questionnaire in intervention group was significantly increased (19.75±2.08 vs. 18.62±2.65, P < 0.05), while the "avoidance" and"surrender" dimensions scores were significantly decreased (14.22±1.91 vs. 15.14±1.92, 8.83±1.54 vs. 9.73±2.10, both P < 0.05). In the SCL-90 scale, the scores of the 5 factors such as "somatization", "interpersonal sensitivity","depression", "anxiety" and "photic anxiety" in intervention group were significantly less than those in control group (1.59±0.38 vs. 1.81±0.37, 1.72±0.40 vs. 1.93±0.42, 1.76±0.32 vs. 1.92±0.29, 1.82±0.40 vs. 2.14±0.40, 1.44±0.30 vs. 1.60±0.38, all P < 0.05), while there was no significantly difference in the scores of the other 4 factors as "obsessive-compulsive symptoms", "hostile", "bigotry" and "psychoticism" between the two groups (all P > 0.05). Conclusion The multiple comprehensive psychological intervention measures used for ICU conscious patients could improve the treatment compliance, make the patients' medical coping attitude more active and improve the mental health of the patients, so it has ethical necessity and certain feasibility.

Objective To investigate the effect of acupuncture on the mental health score and serum ghrelin levels in patients with functional dyspepsia (FD).Methods Sixty-eight FD patients were randomized to treatment and control groups, 34 cases each. The treatment group received acupuncture and the control group took domperidone tablets orally. The TCM symptom score and the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) subscores were recorded and serum ghrelin levels were measured in the two groups before and after treatment. Results There were statistically significant pre-/post- treatment differences in the TCM symptom score and serum ghrelin level in the two groups (P<0.05). There was a statistically significant post-treatment difference in the TCM symptom score between the treatment and control groups (P<0.05). There were statistically significant pre-/post-treatment differences in the SCL-90 somatization, obsessive- compulsive disorder, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety and psychotic factor subscores in the treatment group (P<0.05). There was a statistically significant pre-/post-treatment difference in the somatization subscore in the control group (P<0.05). There were statistically significant post-treatment differences in the interpersonal sensitivity, depression and anxiety subscores between the treatment and control groups (P<0.05). In FD patients there was a negative correlation of the ghrelin level with the SCL-90 somatization, obsessive-compulsive disorder, interpersonal sensitivity, depression and anxiety subscores (P<0.05).Conclusions Acupuncture can reduce the clinical symptomsand psychological problems in FD patients. Its mechanism of action may be related to raising serum ghrelin levels.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Effects of multiple trauma are complex and extend beyond core PTSD symptoms. However, few psychological instruments for trauma assessment address this issue of symptom complexity. The Trauma Symptom Checklist-40 (TSC-40) is a self-report scale that assesses wide range of symptoms associated with childhood or adult traumatic experience. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the validity of the Korean Version of the TSC-40 in a sample of psychiatric outpatients. METHODS: Data of 367 treatment-seeking patients with DSM-IV diagnoses were obtained from an outpatient department of psychiatric unit at a university hospital. The diagnoses were anxiety disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, depressive disorder, adjustment disorder and others. Included in the psychometric data were the TSC-40, the Life events checklist, the Impact of Event Scale-Revised, the Zung's Self-report Depression Scale, and the Zung's Self-report Anxiety Scale. Cronbach's α for internal consistency were calculated. Convergent and concurrent validity was approached with correlation between the TSC-40 and other scales (PTSD, anxiety and depression). RESULTS: Exploratory factor analysis of the Korean Version of TSC-40 extracted seven-factor structure accounted for 59.55% of total variance that was contextually similar to a six-factor structure and five-factor structure of the original English version. The Korean Version of TSC-40 demonstrated a high level of internal consistency. (Cronbach's α=0.94) and good concurrent and convergent validity with another PTSD scale and anxiety and depression scales. CONCLUSIONS: Excellent construct validity of The Korean Version of TSC-40 was proved in this study. And subtle difference in the factor structure may reflect the cultural issues and the sample characteristics such as heterogeneous clinical population (including non-trauma related disorders) and outpatient status. Overall, this study TSCdemonstrated that the Korean version of TSC-40 is psychometrically sound and can be used for Korean clinical population.

RESUMO

Objective@#To investigate the application of Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) in Chinese nurses.@*Methods@#We performed a literature search for articles in Chinese on the mental health of nurses investigated using the SCL-90 that were published from January 2007 to December 2016. A total of 129 articles were included, involving 178 groups of valid samples as well as 36316 subjects in 27 provinces or cities in China. The metafor package of R 3.2.1 software and Excel were used for meta-analysis and data statistics.@*Results@#Heterogeneity was identified for the nine factors included in the literature data (Q test: P<0.05; I2 test >40%) , so a random effects model was used. For all factors except interpersonal relationship factor, the 95% confidence intervals of the pooled effect sizes did not include 0. For all factors except interpersonal relationship factor (Egger test: P<0.05) , no significant asymmetry or incompleteness appeared in the funnel plots. The fail-safe number of each factor was much larger than 5k+10. The merger scores and mean values of nine factors were higher than the national norm.@*Conclusion@#The SCL-90 is widely used in the study of mental status of Chinese nurses, but the SCL-90 norm for nurses is lacking.

RESUMO

The Symptom Checklist - Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Scale (SCL-PTSD), also known as Crime-Related PTSD Scale has been validated in survivors of interpersonal trauma in the general population. However, the psychometric properties have not been investigated in a clinical setting for patients with PTSD from diverse traumatic events. This study investigates the reliability and validity of the Korean version of the SCL-PTSD among 104 psychiatric outpatients with PTSD, caused by interpersonal (n = 50) or non-interpersonal trauma (n = 54). Self-report data of the SCL-PTSD, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and Impact of Events Scale-Revised (IES-R) were gathered. The Korean version of the SCL-PTSD showed excellent internal consistency and moderate-to-good four-week temporal stability in both the interpersonal and non-interpersonal trauma groups. In comparison with other diagnostic groups, the scores of the SCL-PTSD were significantly higher compared to those of adjustment disorder, depression, other anxiety disorders, and schizophrenia, demonstrating its criteria-related validity. Convergent validity was confirmed because the scores of the SCL-PTSD were significantly correlated with BDI, SAI and TAI scores. Concurrent validity was demonstrated by significant correlation with the IES-R score. This study demonstrated the favorable psychometric prosperities of the Korean version of the SCL-PTSD, supporting its use in clinical research and practice.

RESUMO

Psychosocial problems increase the risk for mental health problems and increase the need for health care services in children and adolescents. Primary care practice is a valuable avenue for identifying the need for more specialized mental health care. We hypothesized that Korean version of the pediatric symptom checklist (PSC) would be a useful tool for early detection of psychosocial problems in children and adolescents in Korea and we aimed to suggest cut-off scores for detecting meaningful psychosocial problems. A total of 397 children with their parents and 97 child patients with their parents were asked to complete the PSC Korean version and the child behavior checklist (CBCL). The internal reliability and test-retest reliability of the PSC as well as the cut-off score of the PSC was determined via receiver operating characteristic analysis of the CBCL score, clinical group scores and non-clinical group scores. The internal consistency of the PSC-Korean version was excellent (Cronbach's alpha = 0.95). The test-retest reliability was r = 0.73 (P or = 60) and presence of clinical diagnosis, the recommended cut-off score of the PSC was 14. Using 494 Korean children aged 7-12 yr, the current study assessed the reliability and validity of a Korean version of the PSC and suggested a cut-off for recommending further clinical assessment. The present results suggest that the Korean version of the PSC has good internal consistency and validity using the standard of CBCL scores.
