RESUMO

Threatened abortion is a common disease of obstetrics and gynecology and one of the diseases responding specifically to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The China Association of Chinese Medicine organized experts in TCM obstetrics and gynecology, Western medicine obstetrics and gynecology, and pharmacology to deeply discuss the advantages of TCM and integrated Chinese and Western medicine treatment as well as the medication plans for threatened abortion. After discussion, the experts concluded that chromosome, endocrine, and immune abnormalities were the key factors for the occurrence of threatened abortion, and the Qi and blood disorders in thoroughfare and conception vessels were the core pathogenesis. In the treatment of threatened abortion, TCM has advantages in preventing miscarriages, alleviating clinical symptoms and TCM syndromes, relieving anxiety, regulating reproductive endocrine and immune abnormalities, personalized and diversified treatment, enhancing efficiency and reducing toxicity, and preventing the disease before occurrence. The difficulty in diagnosis and treatment of threatened abortion with traditional Chinese and Western medicine lies in identifying the predictors of abortion caused by maternal factors and the treatment of thrombophilia. Recurrent abortion is the breakthrough point of treatment with integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine. It is urgent to carry out high-quality evidence-based medicine research in the future to improve the modern diagnosis and treatment of threatened abortion with TCM.

Abstract Objective The serum ischemia modified albumin (IMA), biglycan, and decorin levels of pregnant women who were hospitalized for threatened preterm labor were measured. Methods Fifty-one consecutive pregnant women with a single pregnancy between the 24th and 36th weeks with a diagnosis of threatened preterm labor were included in the present prospective cohort study. Results As a result of multivariate logistic regression analysis for predicting preterm delivery within 24 hours, 48 hours, 7 days, 14 days, ≤ 35 gestational weeks, and ≤ 37 gestational weeks after admission, area under the curve (AUC) (95% confidence interval [CI[) values were 0.95 (0.89-1.00), 0.93 (0.86-0.99), 0.91 (0.83-0.98), 0.92 (0.85-0.99), 0.82 (0.69-0.96), and 0.89 (0.80-0.98), respectively. In the present study, IMA and biglycan levels were found to be higher and decorin levels lower in women admitted to the hospital with threatened preterm labor and who gave preterm birth within 48 hours compared with those who gave birth after 48 hours. Conclusion In pregnant women admitted to the hospital with threatened preterm labor, the prediction preterm delivery of the combined model created by adding IMA, decorin, and biglycan in addition to the TVS CL measurement was higher than the TVS CL measurement alone. Resumo Objetivo Medir os níveis séricos de albumina modificada por isquemia (IMA), biglicano e decorina de gestantes hospitalizadas por ameaça de parto prematuro. Métodos Cinquenta e uma mulheres grávidas consecutivas com uma única gravidez entre a 24ᵃ e a 36ᵃ semanas com diagnóstico de ameaça de trabalho de parto prematuro foram incluídas no presente estudo de corte prospectivo. Resultados Como resultado da análise de regressão logística multivariada para prever parto prematuro dentro de 24 horas, 48 horas, 7 dias, 14 dias, ≤ 35 semanas gestacionais e ≤ 37 semanas gestacionais após a admissão, área sob a curva (AUC) (95% de confiança os valores de intervalo [CI[) foram 0,95 (0,89-1,00), 0,93 (0,86-0,99), 0,91 (0,83-0,98), 0,92 (0,85-0,99), 0,82 (0,69-0,96) e 0,89 (0,80-0,98), respectivamente. No presente estudo, os níveis de IMA e biglican foram maiores e os níveis de decorin menores em mulheres admitidas no hospital com ameaça de trabalho de parto prematuro e que tiveram parto prematuro em 48 horas em comparação com aquelas que deram à luz após 48 horas. Conclusão Em gestantes admitidas no hospital com ameaça de trabalho de parto prematuro, a predição de parto prematuro do modelo combinado criado pela adição de IMA, decorin e biglican, além da medição do TVS CL, foi maior do que a medição do TVS CL isoladamente. The páramo ecosystem is a significant centre of Andean bird diversity with high concentrations of threatened species. The Macizo del Cajas Biosphere Reserve's páramos are a district of the biogeographic páramo province of northern Andes and are therefore considered a conservation hotspot with representative bird diversity. To enhance regional conservation efforts, comprehensive inventories of bird species that occupy this páramo are required. We present an updated bird inventory for the páramos of Macizo del Cajas and included validated records from eBird and GBIF databases along with records from continuous monitoring across this páramo landscape for five years. We also provide notes on habitat affinity and important new, rare, restricted range, and threatened birds. We report 112 bird species within the reserve, including five endemics, and three globally and 12 nationally threatened species. Finally, we discuss the use of habitat affinities as indicators of biodiversity patterns in páramo to improve conservation tools for key habitats.


El ecosistema de páramo es un centro importante de diversidad de aves andinas con altas concentraciones de especies amenazadas. Los páramos de la Reserva de la Biosfera Macizo del Cajas son un distrito biogeográfico de la provincia del páramo de los Andes del norte y por tanto, son un punto crítico de conservación con una diversidad de aves representativa. Inventarios exhaustivos de la avifauna que ocupa este páramo son requeridos para asegurar esfuerzos de conservación regional. El presente estudio brinda un inventario actualizado de aves de los páramos del Macizo del Cajas. Se incluyen registros verificados desde eBird y GBIF, así como registros de cinco años continuos de monitoreo a través del paisaje de páramo. Además, se incluyen notas acerca de la afinidad de hábitat y registros importantes, nuevos, raros y de aves amenazadas. En total, se reportan 112 especies de aves dentro de la reserva, incluyen cinco endémicas, tres globalmente amenazadas y 12 a escala nacional. Finalmente, se discute el uso de la afinidad de hábitat como indicador de los patrones de biodiversidad en el páramo para mejorar herramientas de conservación para hábitats clave.

Objective: This study aims at comparative analysis of outcome of pregnancy in patients with 1st trimester bleeding ,with & without sub-chorionic haemorrhage (SCH). Pregnant Material and Methods: women with vaginal bleeding upto14 wks. Study period was Jan 2020 - Dec 2021. Presence& absence of SCH formed the study & the control group respectively. Both groups had similar demographic patterns & parameters (parity, previous Results: miscarriages & gestational age at ?rst miscarriage). 15 out of 50 pregnancies (30%) with subchorionic Hematoma resulted in miscarriage, whereas it was 28 out of 210 pregnancies (13%) withoutsubchorionic hematoma. No signi?cant difference was found on the gestational age at miscarriage & duration between 1st vaginal bleeding & miscarriage.The outcome measures were also similar in both groups. Presence of subchorionic hematoma up to 14 wks. Of gestation increases risk of Conclusion: miscarriage, but pregnancy outcome in ongoing pregnancy is not altered

ObjectiveTo investigate the structural features of vaginal microbiota in the early threatened abortion patients with the syndrome of kidney deficiency. MethodThirty-one patients with early threatened abortion of kidney deficiency syndrome (DK-TA group) and 116 women with normal early pregnancy (NP group) attending the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine from May 2018 to December 2020 were selected. The vaginal secretions were collected for 16S rRNA sequencing, which can reveal the vaginal microbiota composition and differential bacteria between the two groups. ResultThe DK-TA group had higher abundance and diversity of vaginal microbiota than the NP group. The Binary jaccard and unweighted_unifrac distance matrix analysis showed that the similarity, dispersion, abundance, and phylogenetic relationship of vaginal microbiota were significantly different between the two groups. At the phylum level, the DK-TA group had lower relative abundance of Bacteroidetes and Fusobacteria and higher relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes than the NP group. At the genus level, the DK-TA group had lower relative abundance of Sneathia and Bifidobacterium and higher relative abundance of Escherichia-Shigella and Shuttleworthia than the NP group. Linear discriminant analysis Effect Size(LEfSe)revealed that Bacteroidetes, Fusobacteria, and Bifidobacteria were dominant in the NP group and Proteobacteria and Firmicutes in the DK-TA group. The function prediction found that DK-TA was closely associated with 38 functional pathways, including cyclic adenosine monophosphate signaling pathway and regulation of tryptophan channels by inflammatory mediators. In addition, the vaginal differential bacteria between the two groups had significant positive or negative association with the differential metabolic pathways. ConclusionProteobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, and Bacteroidetes in the vaginal microbiota may be biomarkers for threatened abortion of kidney deficiency syndrome.

OBJECTIVE To study the tocolysis effects of Angelica sinensis polysaccharides on threatened abortion model rats and their impacts on Th1/Th2 balance by regulating the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT) signaling pathway. METHODS Pregnant rats were randomly grouped into the control group, model group, A. sinensis polysaccharide group (200 mg/kg), PI3K/AKT signaling pathway inhibitor LY294002 group (5 mg/kg), and A. sinensis polysaccharide+LY294002 group (200 mg/kg A. sinensis polysaccharide+5 mg/kg LY294002), with 10 rats in each group. Except for the control group, rats in all other groups were given mifepristone (8.3 mg/kg) and misoprostol (100 μg/kg) intragastrically to establish a threatened abortion model, and intragastric or intraperitoneal injection of corresponding drugs. The serum levels of estrogen, progesterone, interferon-γ (IFN-γ), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin-4 (IL-4) in each group of rats were detected, and the uterine ovarian index and embryonic mortality rate of rats in each group were measured; the morphology of uterine tissue in rats was observed in each group; Th1/Th2 balance in peripheral blood of rats as well as the expression of PI3K/AKT signaling pathway-related proteins in the uterine tissues of rats in each group were detected. RESULTS Compared with the control group, the uterine tissue of rats in the model group showed pathological damage; the serum levels of estrogen, progesterone and IL-4, uterine ovarian index, peripheral blood Th2 cell ratio, and the ratios of phosphorylated PI3K (p-PI3K)/PI3K and phosphorylated AKT (p-AKT)/AKT in uterine tissue were all decreased (P<0.05); the embryo mortality rate, Th1 cell ratio, Th1/Th2 ratio, and serum levels of IFN-γ and TNF-α were increased (P<0.05). Compared with the model group, the pathological damage of uterine tissue in the A. sinensis polysaccharide group was reduced, and the above indexes were all improved significantly (P<0.05); LY294002 could weaken the effect of A. sinensis polysaccharide on model rats (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS A. sinensis polysaccharides can improve Th1/Th2 imbalance in threatened abortion model rats by activating the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, thereby inhibiting immune inflammation, and promoting embryo survival.

Objective:To explore the application value of uterine artery blood flow ultrasound parameters in evaluating the prognosis of threatened abortion during early pregnancy.Methods:In this non-randomized controlled prospective clinical study, 108 women with threatened abortion during early pregnancy (6-12 weeks of pregnancy) who received treatment in the Health Community Group of Yuhuan Second People's Hospital from July 2021 to December 2022 were included in the observation group. An additional 108 healthy women who were at the early stage of pregnancy were selected for the control group. Color Doppler ultrasound was performed in both groups to measure the ultrasonic parameters of uterine artery blood flow (peak systolic/end diastolic flow velocity, resistance index, pulsatility index) and compare their differences. The pregnant women in the observation group were followed up until 28 weeks of gestation, and their prognosis was analyzed. The pregnant women who had successfully insured their babies were included in the good prognosis group, and the pregnant women who had aborted their babies were included in the poor prognosis group. The ultrasonic parameters of uterine artery blood flow in the two groups were compared. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the correlation between ultrasound parameters of uterine artery blood flow and poor prognosis.Results:In the observation group, the systolic peak/end diastolic flow velocity, resistance index, and pulsatility index on the left side were (6.46 ± 1.71), (0.97 ± 0.30), (2.72 ± 0.89), respectively, and they were (6.49 ± 1.70), (0.96 ± 0.32), (2.70 ± 0.91) respectively on the right side, which were significantly greater than (3.90 ± 1.02), (0.64 ± 0.17), (1.36 ± 0.54), (3.91 ± 1.04), (0.62 ± 0.18), (1.35 ± 0.52) in the control group ( t = 13.36, 9.95, 13.58, 13.45, 9.62, 13.39, all P < 0.001). Twenty-eight-week follow-up results showed that 72 women (66.67%) in the observation group had successfully insured their babies and 36 women (33.33%) had aborted their babies. In the good prognosis group, the systolic peak/end diastolic flow velocity, resistance index, and pulsatile index were (7.95 ± 1.89), (1.22 ± 0.36), (3.06 ± 0.95) on the left side, and they were (7.45 ± 1.94), (1.24 ± 0.37), and (3.03 ± 0.96) on the right side, which were significantly greater than (4.72 ± 1.27), (0.77 ± 0.24), (1.74 ± 0.69), (4.74 ± 1.32), (0.75 ± 0.25), (1.77 ± 0.70) in the poor prognosis group ( t = 10.53, 7.73, 8.23, 8.55, 8.14, 7.76, all P < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis showed that peak systolic/end diastolic flow velocity and resistance index were risk factors for poor prognosis of threatened abortion during early pregnancy, while the pulsatility index had no significant correlation with poor prognosis of threatened abortion during early pregnancy. Conclusion:Uterine artery blood flow ultrasound parameters have a certain predictive value for the prognosis evaluation of threatened abortion during early pregnancy, which can provide an important reference for clinical fetal protection treatment and benefit the prognosis of pregnant women.

Abstract Brazil is the world's richest country in biodiversity, including mammal species. In the Brazilian Cerrado biome, mammalian diversity is vast, with about 251 species, 32 of them are endemic and 22 listed as threatened species. In this work, we investigated species diversity of medium- and large-sized mammals in the private protected area RPPN Pontal do Jaburu (RPPN-PJ) and its surroundings, which is a flooded area located in an important biological corridor in the Cerrado-Amazon ecotone zone, a priority area for biodiversity conservation in Brazil. We used camera-trapping, active search (night and day), and track survey during dry season (Apr - Aug 2016). We recorded 29 mammal species, being the Carnivora order the most representative with 11 species. Regarding threat status, 35.7% of the recorded species were listed as threatened in Brazil and 32.1% worldwide. We highlight the high relative frequency of threatened species records such as Tapirus terrestris, Panthera onca, Blastocerus dichotomus, Pteronura brasiliensis, Priodontes maximus, and other, as well as the presence of the newly described aquatic mammal species Inia araguaiaensis. We stress the importance of RPPN-PJ and its surroundings for mammal conservation, which include complex habitats (wetlands) located in an important ecotone zone.

Os dados foram coletados por armadilhas fotográficas, busca ativa (noturna e diurna) e identificação de pegadas durante a estação seca (abril - agosto de 2016). Resumen El gato andino es uno de los gatos más raros en Sudamérica. Si bien tiene una distribución amplia en los Andes, hay pocos registros confiables y muchos sitios cuya presencia no ha sido confirmada. El objetivo del estudio fue confirmar la presencia del gato andino (Leopardus jacobita) en el sitio prioritario Andenes de Cuyocuyo, ubicado al sureste del Perú. En el 2018, con un esfuerzo de 1275 cámaras-trampa/día, se obtuvo 123 detecciones de 11 mamíferos, los más frecuentes fueron: Lagidium viscacia, Leopardus jacobita, Hippocamelus antisensis y Leopardus garleppi. El índice de abundancia relativa del gato andino resultó en 9.09 (N= 12, DE= 32.20) y el patrón de actividad indica que tienen hábito diurno (Fr= 0.42) y nocturno (Fr= 0.33). La confirmación de presencia del gato andino en el sitio prioritario Andenes de Cuyocuyo resalta que es necesario implementar mecanismos de conservación con las comunidades campesinas que aseguren la conservación del gato andino y de los otros mamíferos en esta región del Perú.


Abstract The Andean cat is one of the rarest cats in South America. Although it has a broad distribution in the Andes there are few reliable records and many sites whose presence has not been confirmed. The objective of this study was to confirm the presence of the Andean cat (Leopardus jacobita) in the Andenes of Cuyocuyo priority site, located in southeast Peru. In 2018, with an effort of 1275 camera-traps/day, 123 detections of 11 mammals were obtained, the most frequent being: Lagidium viscacia, Leopardus jacobita, Hippocamelus antisensis, and Leopardus garleppi. The relative abundance index of the Andean cat was 9.09 (N= 12, DE= 32.20) and the period of activity indicates that they have diurnal (Fr= 0.42) and nocturnal (Fr= 0.33) habits. The confirmation of the Andean cat in the priority site highlights the need to implement conservation mechanisms with the human communities that ensure the conservation of the Andean cat and other mammals in this region of Peru.

Objective:To investigate the effects of human placenta tablets combined with active folic acid and compound nutrient tablets on Th1 cytokines and hormone levels in pregnant patients with threatened miscarriage.Methods:A total of 226 pregnant patients with threatened miscarriage who received treatment in Linyi Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital from April to September 2021 were included in this study. They were randomly divided into a control group and an observation group, with 113 patients in each group. The control group was treated with human placenta tablets. The observation group was treated with human placenta tablets combined with active folic acid and compound nutrient tablets. All patients were treated for 4 weeks. Before and after treatment, serum levels of Th1 cytokines, β-human chorionic gonadotropin, progesterone, and estradiol as well as the rate of success of protection against miscarriage, adverse reactions, and perinatal complications were compared between the two groups.Results:After 4 weeks of treatment, serum levels of interleukin-2, tumor necrosis factor-α, and interferon-γ in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group ( t = 27.53, 20.99, 31.69, all P < 0.001). Serum levels of β-human chorionic gonadotropin, progesterone, and estradiol in the observation group were (143.79 ± 9.56) IU/L, (36.43 ± 4.71) ng/L, (234.72 ± 13.29) pmol/L, which were significantly higher than (122.53 ± 7.47) IU/L, (29.32 ± 4.22) ) ng/L, (167.86 ± 8.93) pmol/L in the control group ( t = 18.63, 11.95, 44.39, all P < 0.001). The rate of success of protection against miscarriage in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group (92.9% vs. 76.1%, χ2 = 12.20, P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in the incidences of adverse reactions and perinatal compilations between the two groups (both P > 0.05). Conclusion:Human placenta tablets combined with active folic acid and compound nutrient tablets can improve serum levels of Th1 cytokines and hormones, and increase the rate of success of protection against miscarriage, without increasing the incidences of adverse reactions and perinatal complications.

Abstract Although currently there is already a set of studies regarding ecological aspects of some particular reptile and amphibian species living in Brazilian sandy coastal plains (including the so-called "restinga" and "campo nativo" habitats), there is comparatively few information on the species composition usually associated to these environments. During 31 years (1988-2019) of herpetological studies carried out in sandy coastal plains environments by our research team of the Laboratory of Vertebrate Ecology (Department of Ecology, Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, in Rio de Janeiro Brazil) we have surveyed reptile and amphibian communities and performed different studies with similar methods in 70 sites from 10 different states along the Brazilian coast. Our surveys resulted in records of 87 species of reptile (five turtles, two crocodylians, six amphisbaenians, 36 lizards and 39 snakes) from 24 families, and 77 species of anuran amphibians from nine families. We have studied multiple natural history topics for anurans and reptiles which resulted in the publication of some specific ecological studies, especially regarding some species, encompassing population and community ecology, foraging and feeding habits, species activity, thermoregulation, reproduction, use of microhabitats, and parasitism by ecto and endoparasites. Our results along these three decades have also contributed for the description of four new lizard species (Ameivula nativo, Glaucomastix littoralis, G. abaetensis and G. itabaianensis). Our studies constitute an important contribution to the knowledge of the ecology of anuran amphibians and reptiles in these ecosystems, as well as to the conservation of sandy coastal plains environment. The checklist presented in this study, based on our records of sandy coastal plains herpetofauna, provides for many localities along the Brazilian coast, the needed knowledge on species occurrence, including the presence of endemic and/or endangered species, which can be of value for many conservation actions.


Resumo Embora atualmente exista um conjunto de estudos sobre aspectos ecológicos de algumas espécies de répteis e de anfíbios que ocorrem nas planícies costeiras arenosas brasileiras (incluindo os chamados habitats de "restinga" e de "campo nativo"), há relativamente poucas informações sobre a composição de espécies geralmente associada a esses ambientes. Durante 31 anos (1988-2019) de estudos herpetológicos realizados em restingas por nossa equipe de pesquisa do Laboratório de Ecologia de Vertebrados (Departamento de Ecologia, Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil) nós estudamos comunidades de répteis e de anfíbios e realizamos diferentes estudos com métodos semelhantes em 70 localidades de dez diferentes Estados ao longo da costa brasileira. Nossas pesquisas resultaram em registros de 87 espécies de répteis (cinco tartarugas, dois crocodilianos, seis anfisbênios, 36 lagartos e 39 serpentes) de 24 famílias, e 77 espécies de anfíbios anuros de nove famílias. Estudamos vários tópicos de história natural sobre anuros e répteis, que resultaram na publicação de alguns estudos ecológicos específicos, especialmente em relação a algumas espécies, abrangendo ecologia populacional e de comunidades, forrageamento e dieta, horário de atividade de espécies, termorregulação, reprodução, uso do microhabitat e parasitismo por ecto e endoparasitas. Nossos resultados ao longo dessas três décadas também contribuíram para a descrição de quatro novas espécies de lagartos (Ameivula nativo, Glaucomastix littoralis, G. abaetensis e G. itabaianensis). Nossos estudos constituem uma importante contribuição para o conhecimento da ecologia de répteis e de anfíbios anuros nesses ecossistemas, bem como para a conservação dos ecossistemas de restinga. A lista de espécies apresentada neste estudo, com base em nossos registros de herpetofauna das planícies costeiras arenosas, fornece para muitas localidades ao longo da costa brasileira o conhecimento necessário sobre a ocorrência de espécies, incluindo a presença de espécies endêmicas e/ ou ameaçadas de extinção, que podem ser úteis para muitas ações de conservação.

ABSTRACT: Avian influenza viruses (AIVs), Newcastle disease virus (NDV), West Nile virus (WNV), adenovirus (AV) and herpesvirus (HV) play an important role in the health of human and animal populations. However, knowledge of the prevalence of these viruses in wild birds is restricted to some groups (e.g. shorebirds) or regions worldwide. Information on grassland birds of South America, which is essential for their conservation, is scarce. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate occurrences of AIV, NDV, WNV, AV and HV for the first time in a bird community of a unique protected area in southern Brazil, which is home for the critically endangered yellow cardinal (Gubernatrix cristata), and captive yellow cardinals from fauna maintainers of the Brazilian Captive Program of the Yellow Cardinal. Passerine species of wild life were caught, identified and samples (swabs) were collected from the oropharynx and cloaca of 64 passerines of 26 species (including 3 yellow cardinals) and 30 yellow cardinals of captive, for molecular diagnosis. The samples were subjected to RNA and DNA extraction and the real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for AIV, NDV and WNV and nested PCR for AV and HV. One yellow cardinal of captive presented a positive result for AV, this result is important for planning, managing natural attributes and making decisions in relation to integrated conservation of threatened species. This is the first report of AV in yellow cardinal and epidemiological investigation of viruses in wild passerines of the Pampa biome, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.


RESUMO: Os vírus da gripe aviária (VGA), vírus da doença de Newcastle (VDN), vírus do Nilo Ocidental (VNO), adenovírus (AV) e herpesvírus (HV) desempenham um papel importante na saúde das populações humana e animal. No entanto, o conhecimento da prevalência desses vírus em aves selvagens é restrito a alguns grupos (por exemplo, aves limícolas) ou regiões em todo o mundo. As informações sobre as aves campestres da América do Sul, essenciais para a sua conservação, são escassas. Os objetivos do presente estudo foram avaliar a ocorrência de VGA, VDN, VNO, AV e HV pela primeira vez em uma comunidade de aves de uma área única protegida no Sul do Brasil, que abriga o cardeal-amarelo (Gubernatrix cristata) criticamente ameaçado de extinção e em cardeais-amarelos de cativeiro dos mantenedores de fauna do Programa Brasileiro de Cativeiro do Cardeal-amarelo. Espécies de passeriformes silvestres foram capturadas, identificadas e amostras (swabs) foram coletadas da orofaringe e cloaca de 64 passeriformes de 26 espécies (incluindo 3 cardeais-amarelos) e 30 cardeais-amarelos de cativeiro, para diagnóstico molecular. As amostras foram submetidas à extração de RNA e DNA e à reação em cadeia da polimerase em tempo real (RT-PCR) para VGA, VDN e VNO e nested PCR para AV e HV. Um cardeal-amarelo de cativeiro apresentou resultado positivo para AV, este resultado é importante para o planejamento, manejo dos atributos naturais e tomada de decisões em relação à conservação integrada de espécies ameaçadas. Este é o primeiro relato de AV em cardeal-amarelo e de investigação epidemiológica de vírus em passeriformes silvestres do bioma Pampa, no Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil.

ABSTRACT: The grey-breasted parakeet (Pyrrhura griseipectus) is an endangered psittacine species that have been affected by illegal trade and deforestation. Currently, this endemic species is only found in three areas in Ceará state, in Brazil. This study aimed to investigate the frequency and diversity of Enterobacteriaceae in wild adult grey-breasted parakeets and determine their susceptibility to antimicrobial agents. Cloacal swab samples were collected from 27 individuals and environmental swabs (drag swabs) from five nests used by these birds. Twenty-seven strains from nine species of Enterobacteriaceae were recovered from cloacal swabs, and the most prevalent bacteria strains were Hafnia alvei (22%) and Pantoea agglomerans (22%). From environmental nest samples, seven strains from three bacterial species were isolated, being the P. agglomerans the most frequent species (100%). Twenty-two of the 27 isolates (81.4%) exhibited antibiotic resistance, varying from one to eight of the 12 antimicrobials commonly used. Resistance to amoxicillin was the most prevalent (70.4%), followed by azithromycin (22.2%) and ceftriaxone (18.5%). None of the strains were resistant to gentamicin, tobramycin, ciprofloxacin or tetracycline. The H. alvei was the main species presenting multidrug resistance, including resistance against meropenem, which is an important finding. These results could provide interesting information on the health of these endangered wild grey-breasted parakeets. They could also indicate that the obtained isolates are part of a group of bacteria that are typical components of the enteric microbiota of birds, which present elevated rates of resistance to amoxicillin.

Introducción: La selección de refugios diurnos es un proceso crucial para los murciélagos debido a su influencia en la ecología, organización social y supervivencia de sus poblaciones. El murciélago narigón (Rhynchonycteris naso) es una especie protegida por leyes de México, cuyos refugios y zonas de forrajeo, están estrictamente asociados a cuerpos de agua, principalmente ríos. Por lo tanto, cambios en la calidad del agua suponen un riesgo para sus poblaciones. Sin embargo, el conocimiento sobre el estado actual de sus poblaciones y refugios diurnos en México, es escaso. Objetivo: Ubicar y describir los refugios diurnos de R. naso y evaluar la relación del tamaño del grupo de murciélagos con las características de los refugios, la salinidad y el pH del agua donde habitan. Métodos: De marzo a octubre 2015, se realizaron búsquedas de refugios diurnos mediante recorridos en lancha a lo largo de ríos, arroyos y lagunas, en once sitios del Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna Laguna de Términos, Campeche México. Por cada refugio localizado se registró el tamaño del grupo y su acomodo en el refugio, el tipo de refugio, el tipo de vegetación, la cobertura, la distancia entre refugios, el diámetro del tronco, la salinidad y el pH. Para investigar el efecto de las variables registradas en los refugios sobre el tamaño de cada grupo, se ajustaron Modelos Lineales Generalizados. Resultados: Encontramos 48 refugios en troncos secos, cortezas de árboles y puentes, asociados a cuerpos de agua dulce y oligohalina, principalmente en vegetación de manglar. El promedio (± EE) del tamaño del grupo fue de 5.3 ± 0.48 para los refugios naturales y de 22.6 ± 9.54 para los artificiales. Encontramos una relación significativa con el tipo de refugio, el tipo de vegetación y el diámetro del tronco. Los refugios con tamaño de grupo mayores presentaron un acomodo agregado. Se localizaron 40 refugios sobre cuerpos de agua dulce y ocho en oligohalina con alto nivel de agrupamiento. Conclusiones: La mayor incidencia de refugios en sitios de agua dulce y ligeramente ácida, es explicada bajo la teoría del óptimo forrajeo. Debido a que el área de estudio se encuentra en el límite de su distribución, el manglar representa el tipo de vegetación más importante para garantizar la permanencia de las poblaciones de R. naso. Adicionalmente, debido a que en algunas porciones de la zona de estudio no fue posible encontrar refugios, es crucial llevar a cabo estudios sobre la calidad del agua y los niveles de contaminación en la región. Este estudio proporciona información relevante sobre las poblaciones del murciélago Rhynchonycteris naso con implicaciones directas sobre su conservación en zonas ribereñas y humedales costeros.


Introduction: The selection of day-roost is a crucial process for bats because it influences the ecology, social organization, and survivorship aspects of their populations. Proboscis bat (Rhynchonycteris naso) is a protected species by Mexican law, whose foraging and roosting areas are strongly associated with bodies of water, primarily rivers. Therefore, alterations in the water quality pose a risk to their populations. However, knowledge of the current state of their populations and roosting ecology is very poor in Mexico. Objectives: To locate and to describe R. naso's diurnal roosts, and to evaluate the relationship of the group size per roost with the characteristics of the diurnal roost, the salinity and pH of the water where they inhabit. Methods: From March to October 2015, we searched diurnal roost through boat tours along rivers, streams, and lagoons, in eleven sites in the Laguna de Términos Flora and Fauna Protection Area, Campeche, Mexico. For each localized roost, we recorded the group size, and their spatial distribution, the type of roost and vegetation, the distance between roosts, the diameter of trunk, the salinity, and pH. In order to investigate the effect of the variables recorded in diurnal roost on size group, generalized linear models were adjusted. Results: We found 48 diurnal roost in dead tree-trunks, tree bark and bridges, associated with freshwater, and oligohaline bodies, mainly in mangrove vegetation. The average size of the groups was 5.3 ± 0.48 and 22.6 ± 9.54 in natural and artificial roosts, respectively. We found a significant relationship with the type of roost, type of vegetation and diameter of trunk. Roosts with larger groups of bats presented an aggregated distribution. We located 40 diurnal roosts on freshwater bodies and eight in oligohaline with a high grouping level. Conclusions: Greater incidence of roost in fresh and lightly acid water is explained under optimal foraging theory. Because the study area is found in the limit of their distribution, mangrove is a very important vegetation type to guarantee the establishment of R. naso populations. Also, due no roosts were found in some portions of the study zone, quality of water, and contaminant level studies are crucial. This study provides relevant information on their populations with direct implications for the conservation in coastal areas.

Abstract: The replacement of natural landscapes by anthropic environments has led to habitat loss and consequently, to the decline and extinction of many species populations. Several strategies, such as the creation of protected areas (PAs) and payment for ecosystem services have been adopted to mitigate the consequences of this biodiversity crisis. In Rio Verde, Goiás, Brazil, a Water Producer Program (WPP) was established, which provides payment for ecosystem services for the maintenance of riparian vegetation in the region of the Ribeirão Abóbora, a river which supplies the city and metropolitan area. In the absence of environmental diagnostic studies in the region, this present study contributes to reducing some knowledge gaps, through the: (i) characterization of the landscape in the WPP area, (ii) characterization of species of fauna (amphibians, birds, fish, and medium and large terrestrial mammals) and woody flora that occur in this area, and (iii) comparison of species diversity (fauna and flora) found in our study area with the diversity observed in the Cerrado protected area network. Our results reveal a low native vegetation cover (~21% of total area), but we recorded 300 total species: 20 species of anuran amphibians, 100 birds, 10 fish, 16 terrestrial mammals (medium and large), and 154 woody plants. Our sample comprises species considered endemic to the Cerrado (e.g., Anuran - Barycholos terntezi and Mammal - Callithrix penicillata), threatened species (e.g., Mammals - Herpailurus yagouaroundi, Myrmecophaga tridactyla and Tapirus terrestris), and exotic invasive species (Mammal - Sus scrofa). The results presented in this study are relevant and may help in the proposal of management actions within the scope of this important program of payment for environmental services.


Resumo: A substituição das paisagens naturais por ambientes antropizados tem levado à perda de habitat e, consequentemente, ao declínio populacional e extinção de muitas espécies. Várias estratégias como a criação de Unidades de Conservação (UCs) e o pagamento de serviços ecossistêmicos têm sido adotadas para mitigar as consequências da crise de biodiversidade. Em Rio Verde, estado de Goiás, foi estabelecido um Programa Produtores de Água (PPA) que prevê o pagamento de serviços ecossistêmicos pela manutenção da vegetação ripária na região do ribeirão Abobora que abastece a cidade. Diante da ausência de estudos de diagnóstico ambiental da região, o presente estudo contribui para reduzir algumas lacunas de conhecimento, através da: i) caracterização da paisagem na área deste PPA, ii) caracterização das espécies da fauna (anfíbios, aves, peixes e mamíferos terrestres de médio e grande porte) e flora lenhosa que ocorrem neste local, iii) comparação da diversidade de espécies (fauna e flora) encontrada na área de estudo com aquela observada na rede de áreas protegidas do Cerrado. Nossos resultados revelam baixo índice de cobertura vegetal nativa (~21% da área total), mas por outro lado, registramos 300 espécies, sendo 20 de anfíbios anuros, 100 aves, 10 peixes, 16 mamíferos terrestres (médio e grande porte) e 154 plantas lenhosas. A nossa amostragem compreende espécies que são consideradas endêmicas do Cerrado (p.ex. Anfíbio - Barycholos terntezi e Mamífero - Callithrix penicillata), ameaçadas de extinção (p.ex. Mamíferos - Herpailurus yagouaroundi, Myrmecophaga tridactyla e Tapirus terrestris) ou exótica invasora (Mamífero - Sus scrofa). Os resultados apresentados no presente estudo são relevantes e podem auxiliar na proposição de ações de manejo no âmbito deste importante programa de pagamento por serviços ambientais.

Background: Currently preterm labour is one of the most challenging problem faced by both obstetricians and perinatologists, this episode in the course of woman’s pregnancy takes a heavy tool for perinatal mortality which accounts for approximately 50-75%. The incidence of preterm labour is estimated to be 5-10% of all pregnancies.Methods: It was a prospective randomize control trail over a period of 3 year at department of obstetrics and gynecology, tertiary care hospital Pune, Maharashtra, India. Total 100 subjects were randomized into two groups with group one receiving vaginal micronized progesterone and group two control group receiving only tocolytics and steroids. Subsequently authors compared the safety and efficacy of vaginal micronized progesterone versus placebo as a maintenance therapy in preventing preterm labour.Results: This analysis showed that women who randomized to progesterone prophylaxis had a significantly increase in duration of pregnancy. The mean of birthweight in Group A and Group B was 2963±36 gm and 2567±49 gm and respectively which confirmed the positive effects of progesterone on increasing infants’ weights at birth.Conclusions: Authors concluded that progesterone therapy had acceptable efficacy in the prevention of preterm labor in terms of prolongation of delivery and by increasing gestational age at delivery.
