RESUMO

Estimating the height plays an important role in identifying unknown bodies. For that, the length of long bones is taken into consideration. This kind of study helps forensic, anatomical, and archaeological cases. It is also useful to orthopaedic surgeons for treatment of proximal and distal humeral fractures, and also for their reconstruction. It is also important in identification of missing persons in medicolegal investigations to define identity of skeleton. Estimation of length of long bones enables quantification of bones, and internal mechanical properties as a possible way to improve the assessment of asymmetry in the humerus. Humerus is a long bone in the upper limb that articulates with scapula at glenohumeral joint and radius and ulna at elbow joint. We wanted to determine the length of humerus and establish a relation between right and left humeri.METHODSThe current study is conducted to determine the length of humerus in a total of 40 humeri (20 right and 20 left) collected from the Department of Anatomy, Guntur Medical College, Guntur. Each humerus is measured using an osteometric board.RESULTSResults are tabulated as mean and standard deviation, and statistically compared between right and left humeri. The right humeri are comparatively bigger than the left humeri. Further results correlated with previous studies. The mean length of the right humerus was 30.05 with the standard deviation 2.339.CONCLUSIONSHumeral length shows a great variation. Asymmetry between right and left humerus should be considered to be hereditary. In many situations the full length of long bones may not be available. In such cases it was confirmed by classical osteometric techniques in which humerus even in fragmented state can be recorded in a forensic case.

Objective:To establish a research platform for obtaining accurate phenotypic spectrum data is a technical difficulty that needs to be resolved in the research of traditional Chinese medicine resources. For example,the traditional phenotypic characterization method of Armillaria rhizomorph is mostly in a form of descriptive text,which is subjective and empirical. There is an urgent need for an objective and accurate method to characterize the phenotype of honey fungus rhizomorph. Method:Based on the image processing software Image J and the root identification plug-in SmartRoot combined with the Synbiosis ProtoCol 3 image analyzer,the growth picture of Armillaria spp. was analyzed,and the length,growth rate,branching situation,and angle of nascent rhizomorph of Armillaria gallica were measured to establish a measurement system for the phenotypic analysis of Armillaria rhizomorph. Result:Based on the method developed in this paper,the growth length,growth rate,number of branches,angle of nascent rhizomorph,and other phenotypic changes can be analyzed in a real-time manner without affecting the growth of Armillaria gallica. Armillaria spp. grew fastest at 9-12 days after generation,and the angle between the nascent rhizomorph and the parent rhizomorph was nearly vertical. This method had a certain correlation with the dry weight of traditional Armillaria biomass phenotypic parameters,with a high value in practical application. Conclusion:This study has established an objective,accurate,fast and real-time phenotypic analysis and measurement system for Armillaria rhizomorph,which expands the scope of application of SmartRoot and can be used for phenotypic analysis of traditional Chinese medicine resources under controlled experimental conditions.

Background: The incus is the intermediately placed ear ossicle in the middle ear cavity between the malleus andthe stapes.Materials and Methods: In present study, various measurements of incus were taken for the purpose of sexualdimorphism. Out of total 60 incus used in the present study, 30 were retrieved from the male cadavers and 30were retrieved from the female cadavers.Results and Discussion: Mean of total length of incus, mean of total width of incus, mean of maximum distancebetween the tips of the processes of incus and mean of index of incus in male are more as compared to female inthe present study.Conclusion: Among all the measurements taken in the present study; total length of incus and total width of incushaving statistically significant difference between the male and female incus and both can be used for the sexualdimorphism of incus for Kachchhi Gujarati population of present study.

Abstract Variations of age and total length of Sotalia guianensis from the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil, were evaluated. Specimens were found stranded. Age and total length of 44 Guiana dolphins were assessed based on tooth analysis. Age varied between 0.5 year and 33 years (mean = 8.23 years). Most specimens were between zero and 6 years old (47%). Total length varied from 119 cm to 198 cm, with mean of 172.52 cm. Asymptotic length was reached at 185 cm and approximately 5-6 years of age. Mean total length and age were higher than in other regions of the distribution range of the species. Nevertheless, more studies have to be carried out to evaluate the morphological variations in S. guianensis populations in the study area and Brazil.


Resumo Foram avaliadas variações de comprimento total e etárias de Sotalia guianensis provenientes do estado do Espírito Santo. Os espécimes foram encontrados encalhados. Idade e comprimento total de 44 S. guianensis foram avaliados com base na análise dentária. A idade variou entre 0,5 e 33 anos (média = 8,23 anos). A maioria dos exemplares tinha entre zero e seis anos de idade (47%). O comprimento total variou de 119 a 198 centímetros, com média de 172,52 centímetros. O comprimento assintótico foi atingido com 185 cm, aproximadamente entre 5-6 anos de idade. O comprimento total médio e a idade foram maiores que outras regiões de distribuição da espécie. No entanto, mais estudos devem ser realizados para avaliar as variações morfológicas em populações de S. guianensis na região e no Brasil.

Objective To explore the relationship of preoperative hemoglobin concentration and use of hospital resources.Methods 108 patients receiving cardiac surgery in the central hospital of wuhan were included.The relationship of preoperative hemoglobin concentration was explored on blood transfusion rates,return to the operating room for bleeding and/or cardiac tamponade,postoperative intensive care unit(ICU)and in-hospital length of stay,and mortality.Results For every 10-unit increase in hemoglobin(g/L),blood transfusion requirements were reduced by 8.0%,6.0%,and 3.0% for red blood cell units,platelet pools,and fresh frozen plasma units,respectively.For each 10-unit decrease in hemoglobin(g/L),the probability(over time)of discharge from the ICU and hospital increased 7.0%,16.0% respectively.Conclusion A lower preoperative hemoglobin concentration resulted in increased use of hospital resources after cardiac surgery.Therefore,the correction of decreasing preoperative hemoglobin concentration could improve the use of hospital resources after cardiac surgery.

Objective To analyze the relationship of the total length of coronary stent and patients’postoperative quality of life. Methods A number of 280 patients who were diagnosed as coronary artery by coronary angiography and successfully completed PCI surgery in our hospital from April 2012 to March 2013 were retrospectively collected.And they were divided into 3 groups according to the total length of the coronary stent,namely:group Ⅰ (68 cases,length of the coronary stent were less than 36 mm),group Ⅱ (156 cases,length of the coronary stent were 36 ~72 mm),and group Ⅲ (56 cases,length of the coronary stent were more than 72 mm).The prognosis and quality of life of patients of the 3 groups were compared.Results There was no significant difference in terms of in-stent restenosis,angina recurrence and target vessel revascularization rates among the 3 groups within 6 months after PCI surgery (P >0.05).But the incidence rate of adverse cardiac events of the 3 groups were significant different,and group Ⅲ were significantly higher than group Ⅱ,group Ⅱwas significantly high-er than in group Ⅰ (P 0.05).Conclusion Although the total length of coronary stent and patients’postoperative quality of life were of no correlation,it is still recommend to make assessment of vascular lesions carefully before surgery.For patients with stable disease,it is recommend to take conservative medication treatment.Make stent implan-tation only when it’s necessary and the length of coronary stent should be strictly controlled so as to reduce the incidence of adverse cardiac events.

ABSTRACT For the demersal fish that inhabit sandy beaches, the variation between day and night periods represents a determinant factor in their behavior, especially for species that live in shallow waters. This research aims at determining whether there are differences in the fish assemblage structure of the sandy beach of São Cristóvão, RN, Brazil, between diurnal and nocturnal periods. Samplings were carried out in 2011, during spring high tide period, with an otter trawl net. Dissimilarity between diurnal and nocturnal fish assemblages was confirmed by PERMANOVA results. No statistical differences were observed for richness and diversity of fish assemblage between day and night periods. The first and third order carnivores were the significantly more representative trophic categories during night and day periods, respectively. Only four species presented significant differences regarding total length of fish between the periods. The demersal fish assemblage of São Cristóvão beach presented variations in the density of individuals between day and night periods. Dissimilarities were also recorded in trophic categories and in total lengths of individuals; however this occurred as a result of the high density of some species. The low depth of the beach may prevent the establishment of larger size adult fish, thus becoming a favourable environment for juveniles and small-sized fish species.

Aim: To obtain the lengths of the humeral segments and compare with total length of humerus in South Indian population, That helps in estimating the stature of individual using standard regression formulae and to compare these data with the study conducted in other countries for the use in forensic and archeological studies. Materials and Methods: 150 (75 left and 75 right) adult, fully ossified, dry and processed humerii were taken to analyze the morphometric details of the humeral segments which were measured using osteometric board and scale. The length of six different segments namely, from most proximal point in the head to most distal point of the circumference of the head (segment-1), from most distal point of the circumference of the head to the convergence of two areas of muscle attachment (segment-2),the convergence of two areas of muscle attachment to the deltoid tuberosity (segment-3), from deltoid tuberosity to upper margin of the olecrannon fossa (segment- 4), from upper margin of olecrannon fossa to lower margin of olecrannon fossa (segment-5), from lower margin of olecrannon fossa to most distal point on the trochlea (segment-6) and maximum length of humerus were measured to the nearest millimeter. Results: The values obtained in mm (mean±S.D) in total length of humerus segments -1,2,3,4,5 and 6 were recorded. The proportion of segments to the total length was also calculated which will help for the stature estimation using standard regression formulae. Conclusion: This study helps in forensic, anatomic and archeological fields in order to identify unknown bodies as well as for the orthopedic surgeons for the treatment of proximal and distal humerus fractures for their reconstruction in case of extensive damage to those parts of the humerus.

Samples of Macrobrachium potiuna (Müller, 1880) were collected in the Moinhos' River from July 2001 to June 2002. The aim of this study was providing some information about the population structure of this species. In the laboratory, the shrimps were sexed, measured and classified according to developmental stages: mature, immature and sexually undifferentiated. A total of 1162 shrimps was collected, being 52% immature, 46% matures and 2.6% sexually undifferentiated. The immature individuals showed a positive correlation with the water temperature, occurring with greater frequency until 21 ºC. The total length varied from 9.5 to 49.1 mm, with males being the largest ones of the population. The size frequency distribution was characterized by two modes. The sex ratio of 1:1 was observed. A larger number of males was recorded in the spring and ovigerous females in the spring and summer. The juvenile recruitment took place in the autumn, by registering a time lag of four months between the peak of ovigerous females and the entrance of recruits.


Exemplares de Macrobrachium potiuna (Müller, 1880) foram coletados mensalmente no Rio do Moinho, no período de julho/2001 a junho/2002, com o objetivo de fornecer informações sobre a estrutura populacional dessa espécie. No laboratório os camarões foram separados por sexo, mensurados e classificados de acordo com o estágio de desenvolvimento: maturos, imaturos e sexualmente indiferenciados. Foi capturado um total de 1162 indivíduos, sendo 52% imaturos, 46% maduros e 2,6% sexualmente indiferenciados. Os indivíduos imaturos mostraram correlação positiva com a temperatura da água, ocorrendo com maiores freqüências até 21 ºC. O comprimento total variou de 9,5 a 49,1 mm, sendo os machos os maiores indivíduos da população. A distribuição de freqüência de tamanho foi caracterizada por duas modas. A razão sexual observada foi de 1:1. Um maior número de machos foi registrado na primavera e de fêmeas ovígeras na primavera e verão. O recrutamento dos juvenis ocorreu durante o outono, registrando-se um atraso de quatro meses entre o pico de fêmeas ovígeras e a entrada dos recrutas.

Specimens of Rioraja agassizi were collected monthly off Santos, Southeast Brazil, between latitudes 23º37'S and 27º40'S, from March, 2005 to March, 2006. A total number of 278 males and 1023 females were captured. Observed depth range was 10-120 m, being the species absent above 120 m. Sex ratio significantly favored females. The entire length range of R. agassizi was observed. Females ranged in length from 16.0 to 59.4 cm and males from 13.0 to 47.2 cm. Mean female length was significantly higher than that of males. For grouped length distributions, asymmetry patterns were observed in both sexes. Length-width functions were sexually dimorphic. Males with lengths < 24.5 cm were relatively wider than females. Length-total weight curves were significantly different than length-gutted weight ones, in both sexes. Females were heavier than males for a given TL class. The angular coefficient b was significantly <3 (negative allometry) in the males, and also for the females with exception of spring when b was >3 (positive allometry). The monthly variation of the condition factor showed significant differences in both sexes


Espécimes de Rioraja agassizi foram mensalmente coletados em águas ao largo de Santos, sudeste do Brasil entre as latitudes 23º37'S e 27º40'S, desde março de 2005 até março de 2006. Um total de 278 machos e 1023 fêmeas foi capturado. A amplitude de profundidade de ocorrência foi 10-120 m, estando a espécie ausente em profundidades >120 m. A razão sexual favoreceu as fêmeas. A amplitude completa de comprimentos de R. agassizi esteve representada e oscilou nas fêmeas entre 16.0-59.4 cm comprimento e nos machos entre 13.0-47.2 cm. O tamanho médio das fêmeas foi significativamente maior do que dos machos. A distribuição de freqüência de comprimentos por amostras agrupadas foi assimétrica em ambos os sexos. As curvas da relação comprimento-largura foram sexualmente dimórficas. As fêmeas foram mais largas que os machos em todas as classes de comprimento maiores do que 25 cm. As curvas comprimento-peso total foram significativamente diferentes das curvas comprimento-peso eviscerado em ambos os sexos. As fêmeas foram mais pesadas do que os machos para uma determinada classe de comprimento. O coeficiente angular b foi <3 nos machos (alometría negativa) e nas fêmeas, mas com exceção da primavera, onde a alometría foi positiva (b>3). O fator de condição variou significativamente ao longo do ano em ambos os sexos

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy was introduced into Korea in 1990 and has been rapidly replacing open cholecystectomy when the indications were met. In this study a medical utilization and technology was assessed on the selected hospitalized patients with cholelithiasis who underwent open or laparoscopic cholecystectomy from April 1, 1991 to March 31, 1994. The results are as follows. Despite the low reimbursement rate by the health insurance, the number of laparoscopic cases have been steadily increased. The post-operative days before health insurance coverage were significantly shortened from 8.4 days to 4.6 days. The preoperative days before health insurance coverage were significantly shorted from 8.4 days to 4.0 days. The total length-of-stays in the hospital were also significantly shortened from 15.2 days to 10.7 and 9.8 days in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The laparoscopic cholecystectomy showed low expenses in all aspects expect the average hospital charges per day. For the hospital to have cost containment, it is more effective if length-of-stay is shorter because of high daily inpatient hospital charge. The laparoscopic cholecystectomy also showed shortened anesthesia time and operation time compared with open cholecystectomy that were statistically significant. The mean anesthesia and operation time for open cholecystectomy were 113.2 and 90.2 minutes but those of laparoscopic cholecystectomy were 105.7 and 68.6 minutes. According to this study the laparoscopic cholecystectomy has reduced the medical expenditure and we recommend this procedure over open cholecystectomy. The further discussion on the different morbidity rate between two types of procedure is essential in providing quality medical care, and to educate specialist.

AIM:To investigate a profile of gene differential expression in deficiency of spleen-QI syndrome(DSQ)patients.METHODS:4 DSQ patients and 4 healthy volunteers were selected.The gastric mucosa was taken to extract total RNA.The matched samples were hybridized on the gene chip.The fluorescent signals were scanned,the ratio of fluorescent value,the analysis of bioinformatics and t-test were also applied.Related genes were detected by real-time quantitated PCR.RESULTS:Between two groups,54 genes differentially expressed and 72.2% of them were down regulated.45 were genes about metabolism of nutrient substance and immunological regulation,and 71.1% were down regulated.4 had significant difference.Of 5 applied by real-time PCR,4 accorded with the results of the gene chip.CONCLUSION:The differentially expressed genes of DSQ patients are significantly down regulated,especially the genes involved in metabolism of nutrient substance and immunological regulation.
