RESUMO

Lower Urinary tract symptom (LUTS) is a common presentation among elderly male patients in urology clinical practice. International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) have contributed much to the objective and quantitative evaluations of LUTS in terms of the elucidation of its pathogenesis and changes accompanied with treatments. Aim: The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between IPSS and prostate volume in patients with LUTS. Methods: This prospective study included 58 male patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The IPSS was evaluated using questionnaire and the prostate volume of each patient was then estimated by transabdominal ultrasound. Results: There is a significant relationship between IPSS and prostate volume measured through trans-abdominal ultrasonography. The Total IPSS increases with the prostate volume, as a significant positive relationship between IPSS total score and prostate volume was recorded. Conclusion: There is a significant positive relationship between IPSS total score and prostate volume

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation between bladder wall thickness (BWT) measured by ultrasonography and lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) in patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). METHODS: Forty-eight women with LUTS who underwent urodynamic study and BWT by ultrasonography as outpatients were studied. We assessed LUTS during a medical examination by interview. The thinnest part of the bladder wall was measured by a transabdominal ultrasonography. We excluded patients who had visited another hospital previously because we did not know what treatment they had received, including medications, behavioral therapy, or other treatments. We constructed receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for diagnosis of LUTD and also determined reliable BWT criteria by calculating the area under the curve. Statistical analyses were performed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov method and Student's t-test. RESULTS: The mean age, body mass index, and duration of symptoms were 59.9±9.7 years, 26.06±3.4 kg/m², and 53.4±38.2 months, respectively. Urodynamic study parameters (Valsalva leak point pressure, maximal urethral closure pressure, functional length, and postvoid residual volume) were lower in patients with BWT < 3 mm; however, these differences were not significant. Patients with BWT ≥3 mm developed a hypoactive bladder (P=0.009) and intrinsic sphincter deficiency (ISD) (P=0.001) at a significantly higher rate. According to the ROC analysis, the best BWT cut-off value was 3 mm for overactive bladder diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: Women with LUTD showed higher BWT values (≥3 mm), especially patients with hypoactive bladder and ISD. Sonographic evaluation of BWT is an easy, fast, and noninvasive method for possible diagnostic tool for LUTD.

RESUMO

Sirenomelia, characterised by a complete or incomplete fusion of the lower extremities, is a severe form of caudal defect affecting 1 in 60,000 births. Most cases of sirenomelia die within 5days after birth and are associated with abnormalities such as renal agenesis, urinary tract agenesis, single umbilical artery, etc. Thirdtrimester ultrasonographic diagnosis is usually impaired by severe oligohydramnios whereas the amount of amniotic fluid may be efficient to allow diagnosis in the late first trimester. We report of a case of sirenomelia at 14 weeks of gestation using prenatal transvaginal and transabdominal ultrasonography.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There was no single method satisfying accuracy, patient compliance and cost in preoperative staging of gastric cancer. A transabdominal ultrasonography of water-filled stomach (TUS) was compared with endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) for TN staging in operated gastric cancer. METHODS: We performed EUS conventionally and TUS immediately after 600 mL deaerated water ingested in 40 patients with gastric cancer prior to operation. All the cases were operated and the histological findings were compared with the results of preoperative TN staging. RESULTS: The overall T-staging accuracy rate of TUS was 62.5% and 55.0% for EUS. Both TUS and EUS could differentiate EGC from AGC in 85.0%. There was no statistical difference in the accuracy for the depth of cancer invasion between EUS and TUS. Differentiation of the cancer defined within the gastric wall (T3) from the cancer invading adjacent organs (T4) was possible in 92.5% for TUS and 87.5% for EUS. The accuracy of determining the depth of invasion was tent to be lower in fundus than in antrum and body. Lymph node metastasis was correctly diagnosed in 67.5% for TUS and in 70.0% for EUS. CONCLUSIONS: TUS may be a considered to be a relatively accurate and simple method for preoperative staging of gastric cancer in the absence of available EUS.

RESUMO

Transabdominal scan of seminal vesicles with combined use of electronic linear probe and mechanical sector scanner was performed on normal adults and patients with seminal vesicular disease. The images of seminal vesicles were demonstrated easily through the multidirectional and multirotational handling of the scanners on the lower abdomen. The Ultrasonographic interpretation of the size, shape and contour of seminal vesicles together with the display of the internal structures within seminal vesicles was proved to be useful in the diagnosis of seminal vesicular diseases, particularly in the screening of underlying lesions of patients with hematospermia. The method is simple, atraumatic, and requires no special apparatus. It is concluded that the method is useful for the screening examination of seminal vesicular diseases.
