RESUMO

Objective To explore the advantages and disadvantages of helicopter emergency medical services of South China in the long-distance transport for critical patients. Methods A total of 30 patients who received helicopter emergency medical services by Guangdong Generral Hospital from August 2004 to December 2014 were selected as the observation group, and the other 30 patients with similar conditions who received ground emergency medical services were selected as the control group. To analyses the difference between the two groups in the disease, transport distance, transportation time, costs and compliction by χ2-test,t-test and nonparametric test according types of data. Results There were significantly difference between two groups in transport distances (km) [578.0 (313.0,707.5)vs.214.5 (101.5,313.5),P 0.05).Conclusions Helicopter emergency medical services could shorten the transportation time of critical patients on long distance transportation, and improve the efficiency of first-aid.However,there were many disadvantages that need to be improved in the helicopter emergency medical service of China.

RESUMO

A descriptive study was conducted with an objective to determine the predictors of mortality among referred neonates and to ascertain their transport characteristics. A total of 300 consecutive neonates who were transferred to the centre were enrolled in the study. Following information were recorded: maternal details, birth details, interventions before transportation, details of transportation and neonatal condition at arrival. Detailed clinical assessment and management was done as per standard neonatal protocols. Birth weight <1 kg (OR 0.04; 95% CI: 0.006-0.295, P<0.01) and transportation time >1 hour (OR 5.58; 95% CI: 1.41-22.01, P=0.01) were found to be significant predictors for mortality among the transported neonate. Transport characteristics reflect road transport with limited utility of ambulances and lack of trained health personal. Hence to conclude, extreme low birth weight and prolonged transportation time were found to be significant predictors of neonatal mortality among the transported neonate.

RESUMO

Background: Delays in transporting blood samples may cause inaccurate results. Samples may be exposed to light or heat during delays, resulting in the degradation of analytes, for example, bilirubin. This study was done to determine the effect of delays in the transportation of blood samples on serum bilirubin test results. Methods: Samples taken from neonates admitted to a tertiary hospital with jaundice were included in the study. The samples were collected through venipuncture in 3 labelled containers. The first container was sent immediately to the laboratory, while the second and third containers were sent after being kept in the ward for 1 and 3 hours, respectively. Bilirubin values were measured colourimetrically at a wavelength of 578 nm using a Roche Hitachi 912 Chemistry Analyser upon arrival in the laboratory. Results: A total of 36 serum samples were studied. The mean of the indirect bilirubin measurements for 0-, 1-, and 3-hour samples were 174 (SD 68.65), 186.97 (SD 60.47), and 184.56 (SD 66.93), respectively. There was a significant difference in the mean indirect bilirubin measurement of 1-hour samples (P = 0.047, 95% CI -24.66 to -1.18) and 3-hour samples (P = 0.045, 95% CI -19.77 to -0.23) compared with 0-hour samples. There were no significant differences observed in either the mean total bilirubin or the mean direct bilirubin measurements of different time intervals. Conclusion: This study confirms that delays in the transportation of blood samples influence the bilirubin test results.
