Introducción : Es de vital importancia considerar que la toxina del veneno de la avispa puede ocasionar una reacción violenta que daña la función visual, es por ello que presentamos el siguiente caso relacionado. Cuadro Clínico : Mujer de 32 años con antecedente de picadura de avispa hace 24 horas en ojo derecho; disminución de la agudeza visual, enrojecimiento, lagrimeo, dolor, secreción; agudeza visual de cuenta dedos a 2 metros del ojo derecho y 20/25 ojo izquierdo, con presiones intraoculares de 12 y 13; biomicroscopía hiperemia conjuntival con inyección periciliar 3+, cuerpo extraño en córnea hasta estoma con edema 3+, estrías en la Descemet ojo derecho. Resultados : Se procede a la extracción del cuerpo extraño con previa protección antimicrobiana con antibiótico tobramicina, antiinflamatorio esteroideo prednisolona, hipertónicas y lubricante mixto carboximetilcelulosa y glicerina. A la semana, se observa la formación de una opacidad capsular anterior con signos de atrofia iridiana que empieza a dar un "cambio de color del iris", a las dos semanas se evidencia la dilatación de la vasculatura periciliar, a horas 4, y a las 3 semanas el paciente presenta una agudeza visual de 20/25 ambos ojos, con transparencia corneal, persistencia de la atrofia iridiana y catarata traumática capsular anterior, con remisión de sintomatología en el paciente. Conclusiones : No se sabe el componente exacto del veneno que produce los signos previamente descritos, existen teorías de que puede deberse a un componente con acción parasimpaticomimética, el mismo que se relaciona a otras observaciones clínicas de despigmentación local y heterocromía.


Introduction : It is very important to consider that the toxin present in wasp venom may lead to a severe reaction damaging visual function. This is the reason why we present the following case. Clinical Picture : This is a 32-year-old-female who was bitten by a wasp 24 hours ago in her right eye. She had visual acuity reduction, reddening, tearing, pain, and secretion. Her visual acuity was counting fingers at two-meter distance from her right eye and 20/25 in the left eye. Intraocular pressure was 12 and 13. Biomicroscopy showed conjunctival hiperemia with 3+ periciliary injection. There was a foreign body in the cornea towards the stoma, with 3+ edema. There were striae in the right Descemet. Resultados: We took out the foreign body with previous antimicrobial protection including an antibacterial (tobramycin) and a steroid anti-inflammatory compound (prednisolone). Hypertonic solution and mixed lubricants were also administered, including a mixed lubricant, carboxymethylcellulose, and glycerin. One week afterwards, we observed the formation of an anterior capsular opacity with signs of iris atrophy which led to a 'change of color in the iris'. Two weeks afterwards we observed periciliary vascular dilatation, at 4-hour meridian; and on the third week, the patient had 20/25 visual acuity in both eyes. Her cornea was transparent, there was persistence of iris atrophy, and there was an anterior capsular cataract. Her symptoms subsided. Conclusiones : The exact component of wasp venom leading to the described signs is not known. It has been proposed that it may be a compound with parasympathomimetic action, and this has been related with other clinical observations indicating local depigmentation and heterochromia.

Objective:To compare the effect and safety of continuous veno-venous hemofiltration (CVVH)+double plasma molecular absorption (DPMA)+hemoperfusion (HP), CVVH+HP, and CVVH+plasma exchange (PE) in treatment of patient with severe wasp stings injury.Methods:Multicenter, historical cohort study and superiority test were used. From July 2020 to October 2022, patients with wasp sting injury and multiple organ damage admitted to the intensive care units (ICU) of five hospitals were consecutively screened and recruited into the CVVH+DPMA+HP group (intervention group). Propensity score matching was used to establish historical cohorts. Patients with severe wasp sting injury who hospitalized from January 2016 to June 2020 in each ICU were collected and matched 1∶1 with the intervention group, and divided into CVVH+HP group and CVVH+PE group according to their actual hemopurification protocols (historical control groups). The primary outcome was the acute physiology and chronic health evaluation Ⅱ (APACHE Ⅱ) score on days 3 and 7 after initiation of treatment. Secondary outcomes included complications, length of ICU and hospital stays, and all-cause mortality. Multivariate Cox proportional risk regression was used to analyze the prognosis of patients.Results:After propensity score matching, 56 patients in intervention group and each of the two historical control groups were matched successfully. There were no significant differences in age, gender, comorbidities, biochemical test indices and critical illness scores among the groups. After treatment, APACHE Ⅱ score markedly declined in all groups, and the decrease was faster in the intervention group; treatment with DPMA [hazard ratio ( HR) = 1.04, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) was 1.02-1.08, P = 0.00], the decreased levels of body temperature ( HR = 1.02, 95% CI was 1.00-1.03, P = 0.02), serum creatine kinase (CK; HR = 0.98, 95% CI was 0.96-1.00, P = 0.05) and myoglobin (MYO; HR = 2.88, 95% CI was 1.24-6.69, P = 0.01) were independent risk factors for APACHE Ⅱ score decline to the target value (15 scores). There were no significant differences in the incidence of bleeding complications, filter or perfusion thrombosis, blood pressure reduction, catheter-related infection and anaphylaxis among the groups. Conclusion:CVVH+DPMA+HP regimen can significantly reduce the APACHE Ⅱ score of patients with severe wasp sting injury, and the efficacy is superior to CVVH+HP and CVVH+PE regimens, with safety.

Objective:To investigate the clinical features and risk factors of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) caused by wasp sting.Methods:A retrospective cohort study was conducted to collect the general data of wasp sting patients who had a clear history of wasp sting disease and clinical manifestations from June 2016 to December 2020 and were first diagnosed as wasp sting in hospital. Patients with hematological diseases, malignant tumors, severe liver and kidney dysfunction, cardiac insufficiency, and patients who had received hormone therapy before admission were excluded. Patients who were unable to obtain effective laboratory results due to hemolysis or other reasons within 48 h of admission were also excluded. The white blood cell count (WBC), neutrophil count (NEU), lymphocyte count (LYM), hemoglobin count (HB), myoglobin (Mb/MYO), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), albumin (ALB), K, Na, and Cl of the blood samples collected within 48 h after admission were recorded. Patients were divided into the MODS group and non-MODS group according to whether MODS occurred during hospitalization. Uni- and multivariate analysis were used to analyze the factors affecting the occurrence of MODS in wasp sting patients during hospitalization, and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was plotted to evaluate the predictive effect of myoglobin level on the occurrence of MODS in wasp sting patients during hospitalization.Results:Mb, WBC, NEU, APTT and serum potassium in the MODS group [3890.00 (1416.90-4057.00) ng/mL, (21.99 ± 8.18) × 10 9/L, (19.61 ± 7.33)× 10 9/L, (93.75 ± 45.77) s, and (4.99 ± 0.95) mmol/L] were significantly higher than those in the non-MODS group [73.50 (34.30-264.20) ng/mL, (13.40 ± 4.14)× 10 9/L, (11.18±4.73)× 10 9/L, (37.00 ± 17.16) s, and (4.05 ± 0.56) mmol/L] (all P < 0.05); blood chlorine and ALB [(101.50 (98.25-105.00) mmol/L and (35.36 ± 6.44) g/L)] were significantly lower than those in the non-MODS group [(105.00 (103.00-107.00) mmol/L and (40.71 ± 5.48) g/L)] (all P < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that NEU ( OR = 0.729, 95% CI: 0.542~0.981), Mb ( OR = 0.999, 95% CI: 0.998~1.000), and APTT ( OR = 0.951, 95% CI: 0.921~0.982) were independent risk factors for MODS in wasp sting patients. ROC curve analysis showed that NEU, Mb and APTT could be used to evaluate the occurrence of MODS in wasp sting patients. Among them, Mb had the highest predictive value (AUC = 0.950, 95 % CI: 0.891~0.982). The optimal cutoff value of Mb for predicting the occurrence of MODS in wasp sting patients was 515.30 ng/mL, and the corresponding sensitivity and specificity were 90.62% and 87.23%, respectively. Conclusion:Mb is an independent risk factor for MODS in wasp sting patients, which can be used as a good predictor of MODS in wasp sting patients.

Objective:To evaluate the risk factors of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with multiple wasp stings.Methods:Patients with multiple wasp stings were retrospectively enrolled in Hanzhong Central Hospital from September 2010 to November 2020. Based on whether the patients developed AKI, the patients were divided into AKI group and non-AKI group. The general characteristics and laboratory examinations between the two groups were compared. The logistic regression model was used to analyze the risk factors of AKI.Results:A total of 356 patients with multiple wasp stings were recruited in this study, with 196 males (55.1%). The age was 56.0(45.0, 64.0) years old. There were 59 patients (16.6%) with hypertension and 13 patients (3.6%) with diabetes. There were 51 patients (14.3%) in the AKI group and 305 patients (85.7%) in the non-AKI group. Baseline data and biochemical examinations indicated that the two groups showed significant differences in gender, age, sting sites (systemic or local), sting needles, proportions of gross hematuria, leukocyte count, hemoglobin, creatine kinase, alanine transaminase, aspartate aminotransferase, total bilirubin, proportions of urinary protein, and proportions of urine occult blood (all P<0.05). The multivariate logistic regression analysis results showed that the increasing number of sting needles (every 10 needles increase, OR=1.866, 95% CI 1.289-2.071, P=0.001), gross hematuria ( OR=9.770, 95% CI 2.586-36.910, P=0.001), decreasing hemoglobin (every 1 g/L increase, OR=0.016, 95% CI 0.001-0.355, P=0.009), increasing aspartate aminotransferase (every 100 U/L increase, OR=1.311, 95% CI 1.144-1.502, P<0.001), and increasing total bilirubin (every 10 μmol/L increase, OR=1.200, 95% CI 1.008-1.430, P=0.041) were independent influencing factors of AKI. Conclusions:The increasing number of sting needles, gross hematuria, decreasing hemoglobin, increasing aspartate aminotransferase, and increasing total bilirubin are independent risk factors of AKI in patients with multiple wasp stings.

Background Solitary wasp venoms may be a rich source of neuroactive substances, since their venoms are used for paralyzing preys. We have been exploring bioactive constituents of solitary wasp venoms and, in this study, the component profile of the venom from a solitary scoliid wasp, Scolia decorata ventralis, was investigated through a comprehensive analysis using LC-MS. Two peptides were synthesized, and their neuroprotective properties were evaluated. Methods A reverse-phase HPLC connected to ESI-MS was used for LC-MS analyses. Online mass fingerprinting was performed from TIC, and data-dependent tandem mass spectrometry gave the MS/MS spectra. The sequences of two major peptide components were determined by MALDI-TOF/TOF MS analysis, confirmed by solid phase synthesis. Using the synthetic peptides, biological activities were assessed. Cell integrity tests and neuroprotection analyzes using H2O2 as an oxidative stress inducer were performed for both peptides. Results Online mass fingerprinting revealed that the venom contains 123 components, and the MS/MS analysis resulted in 33 full sequences of peptide components. The two main peptides, α-scoliidine (DYVTVKGFSPLR) and β-scoliidine (DYVTVKGFSPLRKA), present homology with the bradykinin C-terminal. Despite this, both peptides did not behave as substrates or inhibitors of ACE, indicating that they do not interact with this metallopeptidase. In further studies, β-scoliidine, but not α -scoliidine, showed protective effects against oxidative stress-induced neurotoxicity in PC12 cells through integrity and metabolism cell assays. Interestingly, β-scoliidine has the extension of the KA dipeptide at the C-terminal in comparison with α-scoliidine. Conclusion Comprehensive LC-MS and MS/MS analyses from the Scolia decorata ventralis venom displayed the component profile of this venom. β-scoliidine showed an effective cytoprotective effect, probably due to the observed increase in the number of cells. This is the first report of solitary wasp venom peptides showing neuroprotective activity.(AU)

Background Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major worldwide health problem that can cause liver fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The clinical treatment of HCV infection mainly relies on the use of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) that are usually expensive and have side effects. Therefore, achieving the discovery of more successful agents is always urgent. In this context, antiviral compounds that inhibit viral infections and disease progression with important therapeutic activities have been identified in animal venoms including arthropod toxins. This indicates that arthropod venoms represent a good natural source of promising candidates for new antivirals. Methods The antiviral activity of the wasp venom (WV), isolated from the Oriental hornet (Vespa orientalis), was assessed using cell culture technique with human hepatocellular carcinoma-derived cell line (Huh7it-1) and the recombinant strain of HCV genotype 2a (JFH1). Results The results revealed that WV inhibited HCV infectivity with 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 10 ng/mL, while the 50% cytotoxic concentration (CC50) was 11,000 ng/mL. Time of addition experiment showed that the WV blocked HCV attachment/entry to the cells probably through virucidal effect. On the other hand, the venom showed no inhibitory effect on HCV replication. Conclusion WV can inhibit the entry stage of HCV infection at non-cytotoxic concentrations. Therefore, it could be considered a potential candidate for characterization of natural anti-HCV agents targeting the entry step.(AU)

Abstract Platydoryctes Barbalho and Penteado-Dias 2000 is a small genus of Neotropical parasitoid wasps (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Doryctinae) with four described species to date. Two new species of the genus are described from Brazil, and a key to species is presented in this paper.


Resumo Platydoryctes Barbalho and Penteado-Dias 2000 é um pequeno gênero Neotropical de vespas parasitoides (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Doryctinae), com quatro espécies descritas até o presente. Duas novas espécies do gênero são descritas para o Brasil e uma chave para espécies é apresentada neste trabalho.

Resumen En el presente estudio se dan a conocer por primera vez, datos sobre la interacción entre ejemplares de avispas de la especie Epipompilus platensis Roig Alsina, 2017 (Hymenoptera, Pompilidae) y arañas de la especie Ariadna mollis (Holmberg 1876) (Araneae, Segestriidae), en las localidades de Punta Lara (partido de Ensenada) y José Hernández (partido de La Plata), ambas pertenecientes a la provincia de Buenos Aires. Se recolectaron varios ejemplares de A. mollis en el mes de abril del 2015, y se seleccionaron aquellos que presentaban un huevo o una pequeña larva adherida al dorso del abdomen. Se mantuvieron bajo observación en bioterio hasta completar el desarrollo al estado adulto de la avispa. Del total de las arañas colectadas, el 9.6% se encontró parasitado por avispas. De ese porcentaje, cuatro larvas de E. platensis llegaron al estado adulto (tres hembras y un macho). Los resultados obtenidos contribuyen al conocimiento de una nueva interacción entre avispas y arañas.


Abstract In the present study, data on the interaction between wasp specimens of the species Epipompilus platensis Roig Alsina, 2017 (Hymenoptera, Pompilidae) and spiders of the species Ariadna mollis (Holmberg 1876) (Araneae, Segestriidae) are presented for the first time. Present in the localities of Punta Lara (Partido de Ensenada) and José Hernández (Partido de La Plata), both belonging to the province of Buenos Aires. Several specimens of A. mollis were collected on april 2015, and those that presented an egg or a small larva attached to the back of the abdomen were selected. They were kept under observation in a bioterium until completing the development of the wasp's adult state. Of the total spiders collected, 9.6% were parasitized by wasps. Of that percentage, four larvae of E. platensis reached the adult stage (three females and one male). The results obtained contribute to the knowledge of a new interaction between wasps and spiders.

OBJECTIVE: The rat model of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) was successfully established to investigate the therapeutic effect of wasp venom extract on rheumatoid arthritis (RA) rats. METHODS: The rats were randomly divided into normal group, model group, positive control group (bee venom lyophilized powder for injection, 1.25 mg•kg-1) and low, medium and high dose (0.125, 0.25, 0.5 mg•kg-1) of wasp venom extract groups, in addition the normal group, the other group rats were induced by chicken type Ⅱ collagen and complete Freund′s adjuvant which was multi-point injected into the left hindfoot of rats, once every 7 d for 14 d. After successful modeling, the rats were given corresponding dose of drugs continuous administration for 14 d. The diameter and perimeter of the ankle joint and AI score of the rats were measured before modeling, on the 14th day of modeling and on the 14th of administration, respectively; The changes of organ index and HE staining in ankle tissue were observed. The contents of inflammatory factor (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-8, PGE-2, COX-2) and rheumatoid factors (IgG, IgA, IgM) in serum of rats were detected by ELISA. The changes of T lymphocyte subsets in spleen tissue of rats were detected by flow cytometry. RESULTS: Compared with the model group, the extract of wasp venom had significant inhibitory effect on joint swelling (diameter and perimeter) of CIA rats (P<0.01), The joint index scores of CIA rats was decreased(P<0.01 or P<0.05). The organs index of rats restored to varying degrees (P<0.01 or P<0.05), to improved pathological structure of ankle joint, and decreased the expression of inflammatory and rheumatoid factors in serum of rats (P<0.01 or P<0.05), to regulate and improve the proportion of T lymphocyte subsets(P<0.01 or P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The extract of wasp venom has significant therapeutic effect on CIA rats, which is related to its regulation of inflammatory cytokine network and immunity.

RESUMO

Abstract Epipompilus aztecus (Cresson, 1869) was registered in South America in 2010. The aim of this paper is to report the first record of E. aztecus in the Brazilian Pantanal. Two female individuals of E. aztecus were collected in the northern portion of the Brazilian Pantanal in Mato Grosso State during November 2015. This new record of E. aztecus represents a range extension for the species.


Resumo Epipompilus aztecus (Cresson, 1869) foi registrado para a América do Sul em 2010. O objetivo deste estudo é relatar o primeiro registro de E. aztecus para o Pantanal brasileiro. Duas fêmeas de E. aztecus foram coletadas na parte norte do Pantanal brasileiro no estado de Mato Grosso, em novembro de 2015. O novo registro de E. aztecus representa uma extensão da distribuição de ocorrência para esta espécie.

The State ofRio Grande do Sul is a major producer of grapes in Brazil, highlighting the Serra Gaúcha as the main producing region. In the pursuit of good quality in grapes it is essential the control of pests, especially insects. This study highlights the incidence of wasps, which cause serious damage at harvest time. This study aimed to characterize the community of social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) through faunal analysis and to examine the relationship of these insects with injuries to the grape berries in vineyards of Bento Gonçalves, Rio Grande do Sul State. Therefore, active search were made in January and February 2014, followed by analysis of frequency, constancy, abundance, dominance and diversity. Ten species of wasps were able to use grape berries as food. The two dominant species were Polybia ignobilis and P. minarum, however, Synoeca cyanea has greater ability to break the intact berries. Other three species, Polistes cavapytiformis, P. versicolor and Brachygastra lecheguana, were also able to break the skin of grapes, but of damaged berries.


O Rio Grande do Sul é o maior produtor de uvas no Brasil, destacando-se a Serra Gaúcha como principal região produtora. Na busca de qualidade das uvas é fundamental o controle de pragas, especialmente insetos. Este trabalho identifica a incidência de vespas que acarretam graves danos na época de colheita. A pesquisa foi conduzida com o objetivo caracterizar a assembleia de vespas sociais (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) através de análise faunística e a relação destas com injúrias as bagas, em parreirais do município de Bento Gonçalves, Rio Grande do Sul. Para tanto, foram realizadas coletas ativas nos meses de janeiro efevereiro de 2014, realizando-se análise de frequência, constância, abundância, dominância e diversidade da comunidade. Foram identificadas 10 espécies de vespas capazes de utilizar as bagas de uva como alimento. As espécies predominantes foram Polybia ignobilis e P. minarum, todavia, Synoeca cyanea apresenta maior capacidade de rompimento de bagas íntegras. P. cavapytiformis, P. versicolor e Brachygastra lecheguanatambém foram capazes de abrir a casca dos frutos em bagas anteriormente danificadas.

Background:Crude venom of the banded tiger waspVespa affinis contains a variety of enzymes including hyaluronidases, commonly known as spreading factors.Methods:The cDNA cloning, sequence analysis and structural modelling of V. affinis venom hyaluronidase (VesA2) were herein described. Moreover, heterologous expression and mutagenesis of rVesA2 were performed.Results:V. affinis venom hyaluronidase full sequence is composed of 331 amino acids, with four predicted N-glycosylation sites. It was classified into the glycoside hydrolase family 56. The homology modelling exhibited a central core (α/β)7 composed of Asp107 and Glu109, acting as the catalytic residues. The recombinant protein was successfully expressed in E. coli with hyaluronidase activity. A recombinant mutant type with the double point mutation, Asp107Asn and Glu109Gln, completely lost this activity. The hyaluronidase from crude venom exhibited activity from pH 2 to 7. The recombinant wild type showed its maximal activity at pH 2 but decreased rapidly to nearly zero at pH 3 and was completely lost at pH 4.Conclusion:The recombinant wild-type protein showed its maximal activity at pH 2, more acidic pH than that found in the crude venom. The glycosylation was predicted to be responsible for the pH optimum and thermal stability of the enzymes activity.

Objective To investigate the efficacy of plasma exchange therapy in the treatment of rhabdomyolysis syndrome (RMS) caused by wasp stings. Methods Sixty patients with RMS caused by wasp stings were enrolled in the Poisoning Treatment Ward of the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University from January 2015 to June 2019, including 40 patients complicated with acute kidney injury (AKI). After admission, the patients were given local treatment and systemic medication (intravenous infusion of glucocorticoid, calcium gluconate injection, intramuscular injection of isopropazine hydrochloride and other antihistamines). Plasma exchange was performed on the first and second day after admission, and according to the renal function situations, the patients with AKI underwent intermittent hemodialysis. The changes of urea (Ur), creatinine (Cr), hypersensitive troponin T (hs-TnT), myoglobin (MYO), creatine kinase isoenzyme (CK-MB), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) and pathological changes of kidney were monitored on admission and after twice of plasma exchanges, and the above results of indexes were compared and analyzed. Results With the prolongation of the plasma exchange time, after the first plasma exchange the level of hs-TnT was significantly higher than that before the plasma exchange [μg/L: 1.30 (0.16, 4.37) vs. 0.26 (0.06, 1.26)], and the levels of LDH and CK-MB were lower than those before the exchange [LDH (μmol·s-1·L-1): 14.01 (6.73, 31.52) vs. 20.55 (8.73, 42.46), CK-MB (U/L): 41.25 (21.27, 102.83) vs. 89.92 (35.85, 163.53), both P < 0.05]; after the second plasma exchange, the Ur, Cr, LDH, hs-TnT, MYO and CK-MB were decreased significantly compared with those before the exchange [Ur (mmol/L): 9.77 (6.43, 11.90) vs. 11.58 (7.65, 19.49), Cr (μmol/L): 90.35 (67.10, 336.10) vs. 115.25 (77.50, 288.83), LDH (μmol·s-1·L-1): 7.84 (5.14, 18.68) vs 20.55 (8.73, 42.46), hs-TnT (μg/L): 0.02 (0.01, 0.09) vs. 0.26 (0.06, 1.26), MYO (μg/L): 200.00 (70.39, 1 000.00) vs. >1 000.00 (1 000.00, >1 000.00), CK-MB (U/L): 4.34 (1.86, 23.65) vs. 89.92 (35.85, 163.56), all P < 0.05]. Under light microscope, renal tubular epithelial cells fell off and showed"naked membrane", and infiltration of a small amount of inflammatory cells could be seen. Conclusion Plasma exchange can effectively remove macromolecules such as MYO, hs-TnT, CK-MB and LDH, reduce acute renal damage caused by rhabdomyolysis syndrome, shorten the course of disease and decrease mortality.

Abstract: The Euchromiina moths comprise 735 species in the neotropics. Here we provide a list of Euchromiina species from the Brazilian Amazon. The list was produced from specimens deposited in the most important Brazilian collections and from literature data. Nearly 30% (219) of the neotropics Euchromiina species were recorded, including 13 new occurrences for the Brazilian Amazon. Santarém and Belém were the municipalities with the highest number of species records, with 96 and 74, respectively. Although the number of Euchromiina records is high in the Amazon, this value is underestimated because the fauna was never sampled in the vast majority of the biome. This is a worrying scenario because the Amazon has the world highest absolute rate of forest reduction. In order to suggest efficient conservation policies for the Amazon Arctiinae fauna, it is urgent to intensify the sampling effort in this biome.


Resumo: As mariposas Euchromiina compreendem 735 espécies na região Neotropical. Neste trabalho, nós apresentamos uma lista das espécies de Euchromiina que ocorrem na Amazônia brasileira. A lista foi produzida através de observação de espécimes depositados nas mais importantes coleções brasileiras e também através de dados da literatura. Aproximadamente 30% (219) das espécies de Euchromiina que ocorrem na região Neotropical foram registradas, incluindo 13 novas ocorrências para a Amazônia brasileira. ABSTRACT We register for first time the occurrence of Epipompilus tucumanus Evans, 1967 in Brazil, and record the spider Ariadna boliviana Simon, 1907 as its host. The observations were made in the National Park of Chapada dos Guimarães, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The prey carriage mechanism is described for first time for this genus, and we provide a video showing this behavior.

ABSTRACT Filling gaps in species distributions is instrumental to increase our understanding of natural environments and underpin efficient conservation policies. For many hyperdiverse groups, this knowledge is hampered by insufficient taxonomic information. Herein we provide 415 new distribution records for the parasitic wasp subfamily Cryptinae (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) in the Neotropical region, based on examination of material from 20 biological collections worldwide. Records span across 227 sites in 24 countries and territories, and represent 175 species from 53 genera. Of these, 102 represent new country records for 74 species. A distinct "road pattern" was detected in the records, at least within Brazil, where 50.2% of the records fall within 10 km of federal roads, an area that occupies only 11.9% of the surface of the country. The results help to identify priority areas that remain poorly sampled and should be targeted for future collecting efforts, and highlight the importance of biological collections in yielding new information about species distributions that is orders of magnitude above what is provided in most individual studies.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: Hymenoptera injuries are commonly caused by stinging insects. In Amazonas state, Brazil, there is no information regarding distribution, profile, and systemic manifestations associated with Hymenoptera injuries. METHODS: This study aimed to identify risk factors for systemic manifestation using the Brazilian Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (2007 to 2015). RESULTS: Half of Hymenoptera injuries were caused by bee stings. Hymenoptera injuries were concentrated in Manaus, and 13.36% of cases displayed systemic signs. Delayed medical assistance (4 to 12 hours) presented four times more risk for systemic manifestations. CONCLUSIONS: Simple clinical observations and history of injury are critical information for prognostic improvement.

Background: Wasp venoms constitute a molecular reservoir of new pharmacological substances such as peptides and proteins, biological property holders, many of which are yet to be identified. Exploring these sources may lead to the discovery of molecules hitherto unknown. This study describes, for the first time in hymenopteran venoms, the identification of an enzymatically inactive phospholipase A2 (PLA2) from the venom of the social wasp Polybia occidentalis. Methods: P. occidentalis venom was fractioned by molecular exclusion and reverse phase chromatography. For the biochemical characterization of the protein, 1D and 2D SDS-PAGE were performed, along with phospholipase activity assays on synthetic substrates, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and sequencing by Edman degradation. Results: The protein, called PocTX, was isolated using two chromatographic steps. Based on the phospholipase activity assay, electrophoresis and mass spectrometry, the protein presented a high degree of purity, with a mass of 13,896. 47 Da and a basic pI. After sequencing by the Edman degradation method, it was found that the protein showed a high identity with snake venom PLA2 homologues. Conclusion: This is the first report of an enzymatically inactive PLA2 isolated from wasp venom, similar to snake PLA2 homologues.
