RESUMO

As per 2019 report of the National Health Portal of India, 41,996,260 cases and 3,740 deaths from respiratory infections were recorded across India in 2018. The main aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of balloon therapy on increased level of oxygenation of patients with lower respiratory tract disorders. Quasi experimental design was used for this study. Balloon therapy improves pulmonary functions. Daily practice of blowing up balloon, once a day, 10 times per day for 10 days will steadily increase lung capacity. The data pertaining to lung capacity was collected using self-administered questionnaire. Respiratory assessment viz Vital, Tidal and Lung capacity were measured using balloon therapy. The pre-test mean and SD were 6.83 & 1.30 respectively where as posttest mean & SD were 7.16 & 1.26, with t-test value of 6.12. These reading indicate the effectiveness of Balloon therapy on lung capacity in patients with lower respiratory tract infections. The result of this study guides that regular practice of balloon therapy can improve the lung capacity to a greater extent among patients with lower respiratory tract infection. Off course, large sample size is recommended for generalization.

RESUMO

Background: Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is a life-threatening complication, that occurs suddenly and unexpectedly. Institutional delivery by skilled birth attendant who are trained in active management of third stage of labour and those who can use of Uterine Balloon Tamponade and Non-pneumatic anti shock garment can reduce incidence and morbidity related to PPH. The objective of the paper was to share the experiences of the training programmes held for maternal health care workers in the newer modalities of PPH management. Methods: During one and a half year period, 32 Continuation of Medical Education (CME) programmes, with the theme of “Managing Obstetric Emergencies and Obstetric Trauma”, covering important topics related to high risk pregnancies like Hypertension, Eclampsia ,Anaemia and Haemorrhage at 32 health institutions, spread over 11 states and 2 union territories in India, were conducted .In addition,42 hands on workshops  at various health facilities were conducted with training of more than 2575 maternal health care providers. Results: The pre and post test scores revealed that 95 percent of the maternal health care providers were unaware about the use of Uterine Balloon Tamponade (Bakri balloon) in PPH and Non-pneumatic anti shock garment (NASG). Seventy percent were unaware about the proper sequence of steps of active management of third stage of labour. Training programmes helped to improve the knowledge, whereas hands on workshop, helped in skill development of the health care providers. The participants expressed great satisfaction regarding the knowledge and skills they acquired through training programme on management of post-partum haemorrhage. They gave positive feedback about the quality, contents and conduct of training programme. Conclusions: There is need for refresher training of maternal health care providers in newer modalities like AMTSL, NASG and Bakri balloon, which have potential to save lives.

RESUMO

Uterine balloon therapy is a minimally invasive technique for dysfunctional uterine bleeding done on day care basis. It can be offered as a treatment of option to women who have completed their family and have a diagnosis of dysfunctional uterine bleeding. The study was undertaken to analyse the success rate, complications of UBT and incidence of patients requiring alternative methods of treatment for DUB. Twenty four patients were treated with UBT (Thermachoice) for DUB. Efficacy of the procedure was analyzed at follow up periods of one, 3, 6 and 12 months. After undergoing UBT, at twelve months follow up, amenorrhea was achieved in 29.17% of patients, 33.33% were having oligomennorhea, 33.33% were eumenorrehic and no response was seen in 4.17% of patients. Our overall treatment success and patient satisfaction rate was 95.83%.Uterine balloon therapy is a safe, minimally invasive day care procedure requiring no extra expertise for the treatment of DUB in patients who want to save uterus with instant results. Post procedure there is improved patient well being and high treatment satisfaction.
